This is such a great tutorial. My buddy watched it and we played our first game immediately after. A much better and succinct explanation than I could have mustered.
Once again, immensely helpful and clear tutorial and playthrough. I've watched this and your extended playthrough a couple of times and will watch them again before this hits my table. Thank you for your service, Jon. I salute you.
So glad to find you had covered this game. As always a super helpful tutorial that actually explains and teaches a game at the same time (unlike most others which are like verbal rulebooks)
Great game I ordered this today. At 19:25 the German machine gunner attacked a US scout that was on the other side of the large building. I personally think the cover defence of the tile containing that large building is too low as the image of the building takes up the majority of the tile. There's minimal line of sight.
David Ko same here. I'm a fan of lock n load series, which is a complex 100+ page instruction booklet, but this is definitely exciting and fun to watch
Nice playthrough as always! Very interesting looking game. I'm always looking something to go a little deeper than Memoir 44, my son does enjoy wargames.
-unwraps this Christmas morning- “OMG! Clearly there IS a Santa because you didn’t buy this for me and I CERTAINLY couldn’t have bought this for myself so....!” 😇 Love Battlelore and love Stratego and this is really scratching those itches. Yup, I’m...I mean Santa...is really gonna have to get this for me...
Just purchased this game and I am thoroughly appreciating your playthrough. Curious how you handled the German side. Did you simply play both sides or did you use a solo variant of some kind?
I think your comment at 13:10 or so about flipping an enemy control token to the scout side when you enter his area and it is occupied by one of his units is incorrect. On BGG someone brought this up and the designer said you cannot do a Control action in an area you both occupy with units.
It looks like I missunderstood the effectiveness of the control action. I thought you had to do one control action to unflip the enemy and another to flip yours (once no enemies where on the space) but it turns out this is done with a single action. I'll add a note to the Klingon subtitles.
Interesting game. I think it would make for a great Legacy Game where you start the war with the most basic of units and through each scenario, you improve your starting deck, research and tech for future scenarios. I think R&D and Tech could also be cool in this game, using actions to research better weapons, armor, etc. Maybe get other units like Air, Sea, Tanks. One thing I wish the game had was a damaged meter for units. Then they could add a Medic card in the game to assist with heals.
Adding a legacy element to this would certainly work, and to a certain extent if you play the scenarios in order this essentially happens since the very first ones only use the simplest units.
@@JonGetsGames if your in the same square, do you have to tally the square difference? Example if I am in square 17B with the opposite team, I would have to count the 3 that the shield number says and then count plus 1 for the square that I am in on top of the defense the scout has to total 9 OR Is it just 3 for the shield and 5 for the scout to equal 8 to eliminate the opponent?
In my opinion playthroughs are always better than "teaching" games by going over the rules. So many people opt for the "teaching" approach, and it just confuses the heck out of me and leaves my head swimming. Playthroughs show the rules in action and show what you're supposed to DO. It's like video games. Their tutorials throw you into gameplay and you "learn" the game that way. Why should board games be any different?
If i want to break control of an area that my opponent and i are in, does he have to be away from the space to do so, or does that only apply if i want control of the space?
Hey Jon, another great video. Quick question... I noticed the German machine gunner fired through a building. Is there no line of sight in this game? Keep up the great work!
Yeah, buildings are just thematic flavor. I think those tiles generally have different numbers on them compared to tiles with no buildings on them though.
Seems like square 1B should have a higher defence bonus? It's a massive building! My only gripe though, this looks like a really really good game! Hope they do Expansions, more scenarios and map tiles, maybe some Armour and Navy influence, and some special one use only cards that don't go in the deck, once you own them they are there ready for call of on any round, special forces, artillery or targeted air strike etc, maybe these could be drawn from a blind pile so you don't know what you get? I guess this game essentially needs to be kept more or less as light as it is though, think that's pretty much one of it's key attractions for most players? Also wouldn't want to increase the play time much ...maybe it just needs scenarios and tiles for expansion? What if they added British and Italian forces for new scenarios, and then a few 4 Player scenarios to boot!? :D
When you describe the "Guide" action, you said "you can move any of the tokens on the map." Do you mean any ONE token? Or do you actually mean "you can move ALL of the tokens that you want to move on the map"? Reading the rulebook, I definitely got the impression that it meant "any ONE" unit, not any and all units, because of the specific wording of the Guide action, as follows: GUIDE: Move any combat counter up to X tiles. ( not "counters") The tile you move onto must be scouted or controlled by your side. ( not "tiles you move onto) If you move your Mortar combat counter, remove your target marker from the board. You cannot move a suppressed combat counter.
erictheboardgameking I believe you still choose a card to determine initiative even on the first turn, but the player who starts with the initiative has the advantage because whoever currently has initiative wins ties.
They can certainly be replayed. The starting setup will be the same but the decisions you make and shuffle of the deck will make one play of the same scenario different from another I'm sure.
You can also play the other side. Plus, if you lose, you’ll usually want to play again to see if you can win. I have only played the first two scenarios which are a bit simpler, but seeing the setup for this scenario it looks like it has a ton of replay-ability with all the options. I’m guessing with 12 scenarios it will be a very long time before this gets stale for me.
Great review..I think..I state “think” because I’m extremely hard of hearing and the lack of Closed Captions inhibits my grasp of the game...in any case,I just ordered the game..thanks for your efforts..
TH-cam does create auto-generated english captions, though it does seem like every 20th word or so is wrong. Hopefully that can be of some help, it's unfortunate this means corrections in the Klingon language can't be seen. I'm quite frustrated youtube offers no tool to allow creators the ability to add corrections to videos later so we are forced to do the Klingon thing. I hope you enjoy the game when you get it.
Thank you very much ! Lokkes amazing i own the Heroes of normandy video game. Like it. But this system (undaunted) seem more exciting. I want to invest on a ww1 boardgame. Which would you recommand ?
I must say I would never have expected you to play an actual wargame. XD I've seen so many Normandy set wargames you could open up an entire store just selling those and that is not even hyperbole. This one however is quite possibly the most unique one I have seen in a long time, the vast majority are some kind of hex and counter game that use combat tables and such but this is a deck builder which I have never seen used with this particular topic. To me it's an underutilized mechanic in this genre. I like how you have to have cards corresponding with a particular type of unit down to the platoon it's a part of to use it and when it takes a hit you have to dispose of one of those cards permanently representing casualties. It's both thematic and works very well gameplay wise. Excellent work as always with the playthrough Jon.
I'm glad you enjoyed this one :) Wargames are certainly NOT my area of expertise or even interest but the deck building mechanic really suckered me in on this one. I doubt I'll play it much (I rarely play 2p only games anyway) but I've enjoyed my plays so far.
Why, more small unit actions occurred with no armour support than with them. Combat Commander which is a very well respected large WW2 board game with a lot of expansions has no armour either in the 100s of units it uses.
Such a great format, Jonathan. You are making the best boardgame videos on youtube 👍

This is a fantastic, elegant deckbuilding approach to WWII combat. I'm excited to play at some point.

Superb tutorial - will definitely be watching the full video as this feels like a game that will play even better than it sounds.
Nicely done as always, Jon! Thanks so much!
Best video I found on the game yet! Thanks!
Now, this is a tutorial. Well done, bravo!
Great tutorial. Well written, gestured and spoken.
Jon, your videos have become my go-to for learning new games. They are clear, succinct and personable. What more can you ask for?
That is wonderful to hear, thank you :)
Great video. Nice to see a game that punished a frontal attack, with no heavy weapons (initially), against a defender with heavy weapons.
Nice playthrough as always! Very interesting looking game. I'm always looking something to go a little deeper than Memoir 44, my son does enjoy wargames.

I played both sides to the best of my ability, I simply hide the thought process of the non-"us" players.
Very helpful. Thank you
Great job, thanks!

BrianD0313 I wonder if you could use these mechanics and make a medieval or fantasy theme......

Do you need to declare who you are attacking before you role?

I believe so, but don't remember for sure.

You only reshuffle when you need to draw a card and the deck is empty.

I can't wait for the game to be available to buy :)
Hybban FYI - I went to Osprey Games website and was able to order direct from them for $40 + $4 shipping. It arrived about a week later.
I feel like it won't be $4 shipping to Europe though.
Osprey are based in the UK and have warehouses in the UK and US. Shipping won't be hugely costly for you!
Very good video this!
Awesome, thanks for this
Had to slow down to 0.75 but other than that, fantastic!

I’m about to play my first play based on your video why is it that you determine initiative if the US started with it? Thanks
I believe the scenario tells you who starts first on a banner going through the midde-ish of the first page.
JonGetsGames so the cards are only played starting in round 2 to determine future round initiative? Thanks
erictheboardgameking I believe you still choose a card to determine initiative even on the first turn, but the player who starts with the initiative has the advantage because whoever currently has initiative wins ties.

While having the speaker slower is probably better, you can slow down or speed up the video in the you tube controls.
