They watched TV in that room?! Don't believe I have ever had a room that messy. An amazing transformation. Really making the most with a small space that needs to do so much. Good job all on your great work. I found your channel today because I have to start tackling a craft room/library at my house that has been neglected for about a year. Thank you for your inspiration.

My sewing room is 9-1/2' square, plus a 1950s closet, which holds an Eastlake trestle table and a tall bookcase. In the rest of the room are my son's childhood armoire, antique library table & maple dresser, a desk, printer stand, stacked small bookcases, two chairs, step-back china cabinet, cheval mirror, ironing board and kitty loo. Amazingly, it all fits attractively and tastefully! Now, I just have to wait for good weather to start spray-painting storage containers and the armoire -- wind advisory today and freeze warning for tonight. I will use all your techniques for sorting and storing (labels have already been made), and I know I'll have the space of my dreams. Delays and interruptions have been frustrating, but they have given me time to rethink various plans and ideas. I was SO encouraged to hear that Caroline's room took six months! Thanks for yet ANOTHER very enlightening video!

Hi Norinne! I love how the room turned out. The homeowners did a fantastic job with your help. I love that it took time and you all persevered. My craft room is small, too and has to function as an office. I divided by zones...office area, crafting, area, sewing area. I stacked 2 bookcases on top of 2 dressers ( one dresser holds yarn sorted by type and color, the other holds my fabric stash) One bookcase holds books with less needed craft items on top.The other holds labeled boxes of less used craft supplies and everything to do with jewelry making. I also used floating shelves for storage above my crafting desk. There is a homemade pegboard over the sewing table with sewing supplies rotary cutters, scissors, etc.I have two 2 x 3 cube storage units from Walmart that sit under the tables with labeled bins. I put a filing cabinet in the closet for papers, some bins with labels . I have a plastic drawer thing in there that holds my ribbon, sorted by color. I fit a LOT of stuff in this small room by taking your advice and putting likes with likes. I did use some small containers within the photo boxes to keep things sorted. I have a folding cutting table with a shelf under it. I made a pretty box with a lid to store my patterns. I think I may have told you about organizing buttons, stickers, and transfers in plastic sleeves in binders. It was a process, starting with a big picture, and drilling down over and over again. The last things I recently did was put shelves in the space over the door for items I almost never use but need to keep. I also mounted one of those closet maid things behind the door to hold small items in jars. All of this was done in the ways that you suggested. I still have my mother’s secretary and it has three drawers and some shelves in addition to the flip down desk. I love this room and spend a lot of time in there creating and sometime just enjoying it. I made a paint shelf out of a thrifted piece, and use a thrifted wall mounted spice rack with dollar tree salt and pepper shakers for glitter. I think of you often when I am in that room. I am so grateful for you, your viewers and the Facebook group because you all are the reason I was able to achieve this.

I have 7 empty vintage train cases - which are an awkward shape to store. So hubby built a shelf over the bay window where my table is. Cases are now on display up high - I can see them, but they're out of the way. When I need one, I just use my little folding step stool that's tucked away in corner. I use a case to transport craft supplies when I go to a craft event - or for crafting on my patio in the summer.

Girl, you made it fun and easy. My bedroom is lined with 6ft medal shelves. In 2days, I have half of them completed. I feel so good. You are the only, thing, I've changed. I only watch you now. True store. I've gotten rid of a floor lamp, a chair, end table and I have so many empty containers. I can niw see wasted space. I wish, I'd taken b4 pictures, but did not. I did my 91yr old mothers coat closet yesterday. She couldn't stop looking at it. All I did was put like, with like. I love you snd your channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing. I think most of us have much more stuff than space to store it and still leave room to craft. I liked best the REALISTIC use of a small space. I have different needs (been crafting with paper for over 20 years, so tons of paper, stamps, tools, paints, etc.) but still the use of space that is too small for what has to go there was very helpful to giving me ideas of what I could do. The point about making use of every dead space was well illustrated and an important thing I need to put into my future plans.

That would be wonderful if any of these tips or ideas help you out. In addition to sorting this room out I had a craft bag on wheels I no longer use. So I decided to store excess fabric inside that I didn't need regular access to. The bag has been put into our loft and It is easy to spot when trying to find at a later date.

Oh my gosh hearing your description of how you pull things out when you are crafting gave me the giggles. I am exactly that way when I am crafting. I get so focused on the craft itself that I don't put things away until after the project is done which may not be for a few days. The plan of having like items with like items, and a place for everything means that when I do finally start putting things away I know that I can easily clean up because there is a place for everything. You mentioned that by grouping things together, for instance glues, in one place you always know where the glues are and can find the specific type you need. This makes a tremendous difference.

Rooms are tiny over here in the UK - I moved from the US a decade ago, and I'm still not used to how much smaller our space is.
My current room is a disaster - there's a few reasons for that. First, I'm just naturally messy - my childhood room was always a mess. Traditionally I have been the sort of person to vacillate between super organized and complete disarray - I'd build a system, work it for a while, then slowly it would break down until I did a total tear-down and created a new system, lather rinse repeat.
But now I have a disability which limits how much energy I have, as well as causing a great deal of pain. This means that the time between "omg I need to clean this room right now" and physically being able to do anything about it is much longer.
Finally, the room's usage is in a bit of a liminal state. A lot of the space is shared with my elderly giant breed dog. Her bed and crate take up a good third of the room and poor storage placement during the last "create a system" stage means that its very hard to access another chunk of storage space on top of that. Two years ago she got very ill, and she was already at an age that dogs of her breed rarely reach. In an attempt to cope with the impending loss, I started planning what to do with my room - I knew I would want to get rid of her crate right away because looking at it would make me sad. And then she got better, and now here we are. She is *ancient* by her breed's standards, but she's still happy and comfortable. Nothing major can change in the house now, though - she's basically blind, and the stress caused by rearranging things just wouldn't be fair on her.
I've been able to do some like-with-like organizing, but a lot of things eventually hit the wall of "this doesn't have a place, and I know where its place *should* be, but that place doesn't exist right now so I guess it goes in this pile here". Hopefully when the time comes I'll be able to move forward with things, but of course the first two points apply, so it will be a lot slower than I wish it would be. At least the snails pace at which things are proceeding is making me truly vicious about throwing things away, which is good.

I really enjoyed this video. I more recently moved from a very small apartment to an over 2000 sq ft house. It has been an ongoing challenge to fill up each room with my small hoard of belongings. But I am not complaining, just sharing my thoughts. It's wonderful having a larger place to live in. I tried to organize and decorate all at once at first. Out of frustration I gave up, took a month break and then began again. It's less stressful when I concentrate on one area of a room at a time. Also, having someone else' perspective is a plus. My cousin came for a 2 week visit recently and helped. Your great ideas and cousin's ideas has lifted my spirit!

if she doesn't like all of the items on the shelves to show (looking a little cluttered) she could make some curtains that coordinate with her room decor (the wallpaper and paint). that would also keep some dust off of those items. my mother in law has asked me to help her organize her crafting space. so when she gets it cleaned out and ready, we'll attack. i leave a horrific mess in my wake when i craft. lol.

Nice makeover! Just a thought; I grew up with those same type of radiators. When I was remodeling, my contractor made some nice wooden covers that fit right over the radiators and had decorative metal grill fronts for the heat to come out into the room. They just slid over the radiators from the front, had wooden tops, and fit flush to the wall behind the radiators. The tops kept the heat from rising up the wall, and so it came out the front grills. I was even able to use the tops of the radiator cover for display - especially in months we were not using the heat. A nice bonus was in the bath, during winter, when we could put our towel on top of the cover and get it nice and toasty for after shower or bath. My contractor didn’t use expensive wood - and we did stain them ourselves.

One usually hears the comment, "She needs to just get rid of all that stuff?" or "She must be a hoarder," when, really, you don't have that much stuff---you just live within a very small space. I don't think that I should do without just so that I have that fashionable minimalist look. I'm so glad that you worked within the confines of her limitations such as not moving the T.V., having her buy different furniture, etc. I'm impressed with the results and glad that she is able to be even more creative now that it is organized. Great job! (Now I just have to do something with MY mess....)! LOL

    Spectacular!
I used to put craft items away as (I thought) I was done with them but had to use them again more often than not. This meant added time finding the item again (which green did I use?) and regathering the application tools (a cleaned stamp, brush, or sponge or a new cotton swab, ...). Sooooo, I actually found putting things away after finishing the project was more efficient. You’re welcome, people. LOL 😆

This is a really helpful video and a reminder that it is possible to create an organised space, using existing furniture and not having to buy anything. I have my own challenge with an even smaller space which is 6'5" x 5'8" - yes, really! I'm living in a temporary static caravan for the next year and have taken out the 2 narrow single beds in the second bedroom so that I can use it as a craft room. I have 2 small filing cabinets over which I've put a long piece of mdf which I use as a desk, and I have an overflow canvas shed outside where I can store items in plastic boxes. But I do a number of different crafts so working out the items I need at hand, in the craft room, for each craft and then working out how and where to place them is proving to be really difficult. I've got to the point where I'm about to give up... forget the crafting and just use the small room as a dumping place to stack boxes. But I'm not sure I can handle the stress this will create over the next 12 months! I'll keep watching your really helpful videos and hope to be inspired to think positively about the possibility of getting an organised space I can actually sit and work in.

I just remembered: for my last move I had a free room planning tool where you could change the measurements of the furniture too. I was able to plan my apartment perfectly. Loved it. I think it might have been the "planner 5d". It had all the nice stuff too like 3d view and furniture (and decor!) database. You could enter the exact measurements. But I now read that it has changed and you need to watch a lot of ads. But it might also have been "sweet home 3d". And that seems to be completely free with the same abilities.
Also, you can do several attached rooms.

Absolutely Stunning! Caroline you were awesome in creating all those custom organizers for your treasures. Norrine you (as usual) did an amazing job figuring out the best solution and guiding Caroline on how to do it. The idea of stacking furniture us something I did in my basement a couple years ago...small bookcase on top a bigger one. I used little metal "brackets" (can't recall the actual name) to attach the two together at the back, just so I know it won't slip off the top. Oh and yeah, we sometimes have to make do with pieces of furniture we have, but if we can at least get paint, we can get them the same color and be a bit more cohesive. 💖

You always have great, practical advice. I have been cleaning up my craft room, section by section using your tips and advice. The first thing I’m doing in each section is the big PURGE. Rather than purge the entire room at one time doing it section by section is more palatable. It also gives me time to think things through. I’m also looking at the delivery, etc. boxes more mindfully. My shoe boxes are really being utilized.

I went crazy buying boxes and cabinets to store them in that now I don't feel creative in the room. It is a big mess of everything, that I started to bring some things into the house. My husband purchased from Stamp n' Store two small punches shelves that I don't have to dig in drawers to look for the one I want to use.
