  • While in Oahu, Hawaii we went to Chief's Luau, which is first luau on the island to open back up since the pandemic. Not only that, but this was one of the highest rated luau's on Yelp, so you know we had to check it out. We feast on delicious Hawaiian food, learn about Polynesian culture, drink endless Mai Tai cocktails & watch some of the best fire dancing we've ever seen!
    What is going to a luau like during the pandemic? Come along on this adventure to find out!

      Kitra...of course you are getting emotional. The Aina (the land) adopted you and made you a daughter of Hawaii. It doesn't matter where you were born or where you live or work, Hawaii is now your home. Search 'Merrie Monarch' on TH-cam for the annual Hula competition, jaw dropping stuff.

    Thank you for providing this video. I believe the MC of the luau, Chief Sielu, was the host of the Samoan show at the Polynesian Culture Center decades ago. Then, I think Kap took over for awhile and it's now someone else. In any case, thank you for providing an update of Chief Sielu. It's good to see he's still active. You can find videos of him on TH-cam when he was quite a bit younger.
    If you liked the show you have here, you will like Ha: Breath of Life at the Polynesian Cultural Center when it opens back up.
    The poi you tried isn't traditional. Traditional poi is left to ferment for a few days and it quite sour. Bleah!

    • @OrdinaryAdventures
      @OrdinaryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh good to hear about his history. Will have to look him up. He was really really good. Funny but also emotional and with a dramatic weight to him when he felt it was necessary. We’d love to return and go to the cultural center someday.

      @@OrdinaryAdventures yes, he had been at the PCC for a long time, I had not been to PCC since the late 1990s, and he used to climb up the coconut tree and was a funny host !. If you didn't know, PCC hosts a World Fire Dancing Contest every year ! As for the kalua pig, yes, that is ceremonial...as that would not be enough for the crowd...so the staff has to cook the kalua pig on a stove...normally adding hawaiian salt to the entire exterior and adding about 2-4 tablespoons of liquid smoke for like about 5 lbs of pork butt and just slow cooking it (I use a crock pot) and just let it cook for 10 hours, and maybe within the last hour, start shredding the pork apart with two forks.. Poi can be eaten fresh for a few days later, some people like it more sour so hence, eating it few days later. Poi best be eaten as a starch, so you'd dip it and eat it with kalua pig, or the lau lau, or with lomi lomi salmon...it is used instead of rice. too bad no one tells the tourists that and so first impressions are (bad) lasting impressions.

    Chief is a great person and a former world champion Samoan fire-dancer so you know the guys under him will be great. There are a lot of different Polynesians in Hawaii and many are trained to dance in the different Polynesian cultures (due to the tourist trade). This was a luau I would go to as a local islander. Good pick.

    I don't know why I missed this on Patreon. Keep the drinks coming and the pork & poi bread look good. You took in the Chief's message and weren't just "we saw some cool indigenous dancers" like most tourists. As you said, It's a tourist attraction, but the money goes to keeping people employed & indigenous culture alive.

    I can't tell you how excited I am that you went to Chiefs luau. I first met Chief Sielu Avea in 1997 when he was a performer at the Polynesian Cultural Center. He was the star of the Samoan village and the fire, knife show. He was the world FireKnife champion in 1993. I chatted with him a couple of times during the day and after the night show I went to shake his hand and he pulled me to him and kissed me. I was shocked but so pleased. He's amazing and one of my fondest memories of Hawaii. You had a great show from one of the best!!! FYI Lilikoi is passion fruit.

    Interesting, this luau focuses on more general Polynesian performance rather than strictly Hawaiian... Kind of like a version of the Polynesian Cultural Center (WHICH I highly recommend if u ever come back to O'ahu... It's our own version of Disneyland without the anthropomorphic animals lol). Glad u enjoyed the performance!
    As for poi, it's actually a starch, it's not meant to be an entree in itself, you eat it with something else. Actually poi freshly pounced is slightly sweet. It gets sour with time as it ferments.
    Also there's two types of hula, the quick version (kahiko) and the slow, more modern version (auwana).
    So much fun to see u guys experience the island culture 🤙

    • @kapioleilanionalanielua
      @kapioleilanionalanielua 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just a little info, Hawaiian language has no plural S like English. Luaus, leis...this plural does not exist. In Hawaiian: or ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, we use 'na' to express plural or more than one, but luau and lei are also used as plural as they are in the context of the sentence. For example, you have many flower lei! The context of the sentence implies many lei, so we know it means plural, but we don't add the S. In your intro you say "highest rated luau's on Yelp"", but you can say "highest rated of the many other luau on Yelp" and Hawaiians (kanaka maoli) will understand what you mean, but maybe not the English grammar police LOL!

    • @kapioleilanionalanielua
      @kapioleilanionalanielua 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, there is a whole history with poi. The root from the taro plant, Hawaiians used to worship the god Haloa, who was the Taro plant god. Taro plants are grown in lo'i fields.
      Hawaiians saw the coconut tree (NIU) as the male part of a Hawaiian warrior who is buried in the ground. True!
      Apua'a was the boar god, lots of history on him. Kalua pig is one of my favorite foods. If I make a lau lau, which is kalua pork and sometimes butterfish, wrapped and steamed in taro and Ti leaves, I can eat lau lau for weeks, it is one of my favorites along with squid luau,.

My SIL loved the taro (poi) rolls so much, that they brought her an entire platter!!!! It was HILARIOUS! They even brought my son and two nieces up on stage which delighted Grandma and Grandpa. Chiefs Luau was great!! I've seen him at the Polynesian Cultural Center, been to their Luau, and it's Chief Sielu that makes the Luau stand out. By the way Aulani was excellent. Even met a old friend that works there. Can't wait to go back.

    I used to work at La Nouba as an usher back in the day. They made us tell parents to take their kids shoes off if they lit up. I'm surprised they use a light system to get the attention of the wait staff when it could also distract the performers. Did they stop serving when the show started? I am so thankful for ALL of your videos!

    • @OrdinaryAdventures
      @OrdinaryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, the Polynesian Cultural Center actually DOES do an annual world fire knife competition. So you actually could go see a whole show of just fire knife dancing.

      @@OrdinaryAdventures Aulani normally has a Luau with the Disney Characters dancing hula and in the story of the Hula they perform, when they are performing. I was a Polynesian Revue Dancer for the EbbTides Polynesian Revue back in the mid-80s and we danced to 500 guests. It was at the Sheraton Hotel Lawn, Kahala Lawn, and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Lawn. Lots of Fun!

    Great video guys!. Boy that reminds me of years ago when I was in Oahu-
    Went to a luau at the Polynesian cultural center, it was awesome!. One of the things I remember the most was how great the roast pig was... never had anything like that before it was super good!. Thanks again for sharing this video.👍

    Aloha Peter & Kitra
    I’m glad you
    highlighted your
    luau experience 🌺🤙🏻
    It’s a shame
    The Aulani luau
    wasn’t open ..
    It is a very nice show
    except
    for two things
    1) it use to be a free
    but the last time I went It wasn’t
    included with your stay
    and 2) Aulani’s luau
    is just the show
    they don’t serve food ,
    the traditional roasted
    Kālua pork dinner 😋
    ( but you can bring
    your own food in
    which can be a plus or negative I guess how you look at it )
