  • Another quick/fun test of the 2016 John Deere Z960M in overgrown grass in the field. The mower has a 60" 7-Iron Pro deck and a Kawasaki 31 HP FX921V engine (54 lb feet of torque). It really handles a large volume of grass and the underneath of the deck stays pretty clean even in wet grass.

      It is. I love it. :-). It cuts this new spring grass like a beast. No clumping in wet, thick grass.

    Whenever mowing tall grass you want to shoot it the outside not going back and fourth because you’re clumping it.

    even when mowing semi tall grass i always raise the discharge chute just to help grass distribute better prevents clogging in most cases

      Me too. The only time I let it down these days is when it's really dry and windy. On those days, I end up with a face full of grass or chopped leaves if it's in the up position.

    Love the new addition man mower is a tank should barrel through anything you throw at it.
    All the 7 Iron Pros just destroy competition in all conditions the only true competitor is Scag and they are amazing all around cutter/stripers as well but the price tags are not justifiable compare to John Deeres line not to mention the warranties the carry + 24/7 uptime + loaner program
    Happy Halloween from ST :)

      Southern Tide Thanks. I went out into another part of the field today with tall grass and a lot of old clippings and I'm just astounded at the volume of grass and that it can move out of the deck. Also the engine hardly ever bogs down at all even in the very dense tall grass. Coming from the eXmark ultracut deck, I just can't believe it and I'm a true believer now. It really is amazing and I'm sure next spring when the grass is growing quickly it will do much better than my eXmark. I used the eXmark for 7 years and I can instantly see how much better the 7-iron pro deck performs in heavy grass. The eXmark gave me a very nice cut, but in thick wet grass it clumps much more and more importantly for me there was lots of built up grass under the deck. I am not one to exaggerate and I don't like to play the mine is better than yours game but there is no question in my mind now that the John Deere deck on this mower is superior to the eXmark. I've heard a lot of good things about the Scag deck and I've looked at the design of that one and it appears to be similar to the John Deere deck which has a more wide-open design to move a high volume of material.

    I ran Dixie Chopper for years but had problems with oil hoses busting on my last one just two weeks after buying it,parts not fitting correct even though it was the correct part number the part was wrong even went as far as speaking to the man who was the head guy at DC cant recall his name now.Went to the John Deere Z915E 60" and haven't looked back.Plan to get another one next season.On the discharge chute i took off the big rubber chute because I don't want debris shooting out everywhere so I made a chute blocker out of materials I had around the shop and it operates by using my left foot to open and close it as I am mowing grass or leaves.I don't have to take my hands off the levers just keep going and use the foot to move the lever and did not have to drill holes or disturb the chassis,ect.If anyone wants a picture or short video be glad to pass it on to anyone interested.

      The 915 is a nice machine with a good price and very sturdy. I like the warranty too, 36 months or 1200 hours, whichever comes first. First 24 months, no hour limitation. I'm just using mine for home use so I'll get the full 3 years. I only put about 75 hours per year on it.

      I never see them on commercial mowing trucks around here. I just thought on really rich folks with 10 acres to mow and who know what is good bought them. I'm not saying they are lesser quality:)

      Turd Ferguson in Canada I use one and it's been the least problematic mower we use.

    I was wondering does JD mowers not require you to be in idle rpms to engage the blades. because i'm going to start working with one not sure which one yet. or can you just use full power because some other brands don't like it and it wears the belt.

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JD recommends 1/2 to 3/4 throttle when you engage the PTO clutch. It puts a lot of stress on the clutch and everything involved if you do it at full throttle. If you do it under 1/2, in my case it bogs the engine really bad and that's also a strain on the engine, etc. Much better to engage just over 1/2 throttle in my opinion. The manual says:
      manuals.deere.com/omview/OMTCU39588_19/?tM=
      Engage PTO:
      1. Move throttle lever to the 1/2 or 3/4 fast position.
      2. Push front of PTO switch down to engage mower deck.
      3. Move throttle lever forward to the fast position for mowing.

      @@ThePhotographyHobbyist I have a 2021 z454r. The dealer and manual say at mowing rpms to engage the blades. It offers a suggestion to lesson the vibration during engagement to lift the deck to travel height. I had a z225 for years and lowered the throttle before engaging the blades. Shook the crap out of that deck no matter what rpm speed. Not the new one. great mower.

    looks that blade is dull,,,is that right?

    • @ThePhotographyHobbyist
      @ThePhotographyHobbyist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blades were sharp, but the grass was way overgrown grass (a foot tall or more) in the field with large clumps of previously cut overgrown grass laying on top of it in many places.
