John Deere Z960M Test In The Tall Grass

Quick look at the John Deere Z960M commercial zero turn mower with 7-Iron PRO 60" deck. The deck is impressive, throwing grass nearly 10 feet. Keep in mind that the section I cut was a field and has not been properly cut for over a year. It's just rough cut with a tractor and there are large mats of grass lying here and there and the grass is often folded over under those mats, so it's not like a 'normal' overgrown area where there's nothing but tall grass. Those large piles of dried grass make it more difficult to cut. This was just a quick example of showing the dispersal of the large amounts of grass when cutting.

I mentioned that one of the few main differences between the M and R series is the cross porting for the transmission, but the R series also has the option to turn on/off the PTO from a switch on the handle as well as the option to automatically raise and lower the deck.

I ordered my Z960 M back in April of last year and have about 50 hours on mine. Great power and will cut grass very well no matter how tall. I got the new Tweel tires and am impressed with their performance. Only thing about mine cutting taller grass is that it eates through blades fast.

I nearly ended up with one that had the Tweels but someone had already claimed it. I got mine at the end of the season so I haven't put many hours on it yet, but it's really a beast (cuts tall grass in the field like crazy). I'm very impressed with the deck compared to the eXmark UltraCut deck I had previously. I lower my 24x12-12 turf master tires down to about 8-9 pounds and the ride is much better (I have the suspension seat also). I adjusted the deck for the lower pressure since it might sit slightly lower with the lower pressure. I guess the good thing about the regular tires for me is they last several years and they're only around $88 per tire if I need to replace them.

Just one suggestion. If you're going to be cutting grass like that, I would recommend mulching blades instead of the high lift blades.

Hey nice mower! Just a heads up, I have a gravely with the same engine and after I broke it in. I switched my oil to royal purple sae30 straight weight! It use to take me 1 1/2 tanks of fuel to cut a 3 acre yard on my farm but now only takes almost 1 tank with no bogging down!! My mower seems to have a lot more power! Try it and see!! Worked wonders for my mower!
