It sucks to have ADHD. I wish people stopped calling it a "superpower". If ADHD is a "superpower" to you, it's probably not the ADHD, it's other parts of your personality. ADHD is very limiting and people with ADHD have more problems than neurotypical people in nearly all aspects of life. We die earlier, get more depressed and suffer financially more than others.

I don't know... Life has been hard and I also have the same financial, emotional and job security problems... But also have been allowed by my brain to know so much about so many thigs in very high levels, leaving all of my neurotypical connections freaking jealous of the amount of things I know and can do... Once you know you have it and work on it, with the proper tools, it can be s superpower, but I think it's a matter of perspective, if you are not ready to see it that way I can't force you to do it... To be clear though, the fact that someone has a superpower doesn't mean he or she doesn't have weaknesses... ask superman about kryptonite.

    • @abbypaige3518
      @abbypaige3518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

I disagree. I fully see the superpower concept for myself. As many obstacles as it causes. I am able to think in depth, understand people and their behavior more, connect with people deeper. Every thought I have is a web diagram of connecting and supporting thoughts, reasons why, and so on. Yeah, it’s exhausting. But, I choose to use it as a strength. Now, all of us ADHDers know that everyone with adhd is different. And so many of us have the trauma of not feeling seen/heard.. being pushed down when we get excited.. etc. which is really damaging to our self esteem and cries around our adhd diagnosis.
But it’s definitely a superpower. I mean.. do you think Spider-Man always wants to be climbing on buildings and chasing after bad guys? No. He probably wants to just simple do his laundry AND fold and put it away on the same day. But, he has a skill set that no one else does.
I choose to see that as special.

Something I'm genuinely curious about is if everyone with ADHD gets excited or happy with things that might seem simplistic or odd to those that are neurotypical. I, for instance, get extremely excited when I have stickers (whether available for use or otherwise - I typically avoid using them since I "don't want to waste them", which has led to me collecting over 200 pages of stickers that are entirely unopened). Another thing that really stimulates me is music, and flashing colors / animated visuals. The latter is an issue since I get stuck watching "beat saber vr" videos on youtube just because I like the pretty colors.
Before I was diagnosed with ADHD, I would play videogames simultaneously whilst in class (this was during quarantine, and we were using zoom) because it truly was the only way for me to have enough willpower to do anything but go to sleep or start blanking out.

In my experience ADHD does make excited about their hobbies, passionate about them in fact. Those hobbies may or may not be simplistic though, that depends more on the individual, for example i went through an analytic philosophy phase a few years, everything i was reading would have been torture to my ADHD friends & family, now i've been watching videos about making cigar box guitars, which i think is a bit more in alignment with the stereo typical ADHD brain.

I find hyperfocus as much of a problem as lack of focus. Working on a project or studying a topic I can be unable to pull away for 8-9 hours straight, even with alarms going off from the clock and phone. I don't drink water, eat, even go to the bathroom, and it's very hard on my health over time. Forcing myself to go to bed on time is also an issue living alone, when in hyperfocus particularly. To kick into action, the motor cortex of the left hemisphere must usually be kicked in - by fear - that's why we procrastinate; the normal area of the right hemisphere which gets people started on tasks in a timely manner just isn't working in our right hemisphere. I have virtually no sense of time and keep my clocks set well ahead of time just to try to be on time for anything. The lack of executive function in the forebrain is also particularly problematic, as I say things most people think but can stop themselves from saying. It doesn't go over well. We are also more emotional, in fact that emotionality used to be a major defining characteristic of the disorder, and I don't know why it doesn't get talked about more. It's a big issue we get judged for quite often. Neurotypicals assume we are choosing to interrupt rudely, being emotional when we could control it like they do. We are hella more creative because we are divergent thinkers, so you want us inventing novel solutions. Perhaps that's why nature is producing so many of us right now; big changes and many novel approaches are needed on earth. I just wish folks could be more kind and understanding; people assume our brains are like theirs, and it's lack of character showing up. It is not!!

I hate when normal or "neurotypical" people say they have ocd or adhd like its nothing. I don't have OCD but I do have adhd that i discovered at age 22 and felt like a loser because I wasn't good at saving, bad at time management, couldn't focus, etc. On top of being closeted in my school days, not having much to my credit as far as most social metrics go, it was hard to have any sense of confidence until i finally went on adderall. The medication makes me feel normal and confident in my abilities at a normal level. Does it solve every problem? No, but it makes life feel like I can do it. If you ask an ADHD person to break bad habits and form good ones it seems impossibly overwhelming. I don't fidget anymore with medication and 'move' better, I feel more coordinated or in-tune with my body. The side effect I am afraid of is, it gives me high blood pressure, and the dentist doesnt want to work on me until I get medical clearance. Im terrified of having to give up medication that works, in lieu of something that doesnt work as well. Any advice?

I have it, too, Derek. I know exactly what you are saying. Don't give up your medication. Blood pressure can be controlled. Looking back, how different my life could have been if I had been diagnosed and given proper medication early on! Good for you! You should definitely use your medicine as long as it's available but if you practice skills to help manage yourself, then your days without medicine will be a lot easier to handle.

Almost my whole life I thought I was just the odd one. And that the system was catered to people without ADHD. What's crazy is that I didn't know I had it or knew that it was a thing. I always wondered why I was told to take pills everyday before school and went for Doctor check ups every once in awhile. (The doctor check up were pretty cool so I'm not complaining) Heck I'd love to go there right now and play with all the puzzles and fake Bowling ball set. I've met thousands of great teachers back then that I wish I could have the time to study with again. My attention span honestly did not help me retain all of the information they were passing down to me. And now that I've become aware that I've got ADHD,I've finally managed to gain ALMOST complete control of my mind with relative ease, it's a shame I can't put my new mind into good use of their teachings,But hey I do self study now so I'm my own teacher.

If hadn't gone the route of taking medication, you would have developed keener senses towards overriding impulsivity...barely, but with enough effort and almost psychic insight to bail on scenarios where such impulsive risks could be immediately minimalized or crushed before the cause and effect nature of being hit with a negative outcome.
Better yet, one could look at meditation and the ability to find a means to deepen rather than scrape a thousand surfaces and by deepen, it's a matter of letting the learning process allow itself to imprint longevity in whatever task, whether that of employment or so forth...
There is an old Virginian saying from the colonial days: Let the hot rice cool in one's mouth before taking action. Reflection is the golden chalice and to drink from it defines a better way forward.

I have inattentive ADHD, only really get "hyperactive" when I'm having a panic attack lol. The meds are like turning the car from neutral to drive. I actually have the mental energy to do things. This is different than caffeine, as it wakes me up, but sleepy and foggy/drifting are 2 different states. What's cool is I can still daydream if I want to, but I daydream more linear, vividly (vs bouncing from one thing to the other and never really developing a "plot") and goal-oriented too. Honestly, lifesaving. The part I don't like is that eating during the day blunts it, as does taking it too long without taking a break (my body adapts to substances stupid quick, I'll go from "this is life changing" to "I feel nothing" within a month) so I have to intermittent fast and take med breaks all the time.

I feel like I’m probably the smartest person in my school. Probably smarter than most people on earth. When I’m motivated, I learn faster than the average person. If I had full control over my brain (and no depression) I could do so much. My potential is wasted because I just can’t make myself do anything productive. Sometimes a blessing… most of the time a curse

I found a way to lessen the symptoms; intermittent fasting and meditation ( for me Qigong & Medicinal Yoga, mindfulness & prayers & affirmations)
It helps regulating better and lessen my anxiety and depression also. Helps with sleep also.
It has to be done daily, it must become a part of one's lifestyle
A keto diet has helped regulating & walking in nature everyday, for calming down
Journaling everyday about thoughts & feelings

      and that it helped.
I find it more affordable to live or do these "rituals" because you can do Qigong & Yin Yoga (Medicinal Yoga) follow free here on YT or read or learn online.
I am also struggling financially, and since i also unf have a chronic stomach disease (IBS), all of these practices is a must for me to cope with my pain & regulating energy levels. So fasting naturally became a part of my life, because i can only eat & drink once-twice a day in evening in case i'd have to rush to toilet or pain.
So fasting helped also financially & energetically, because i dont have to prepare to bring food to work/school.
I hope you find a way to ease :)
I also find listening to calm music or binaural beats help to put you in a better state of mind, uplifting & can help set the mood. All the best 🙏👍😊

As great as the video is Im mad about that vague blanket statement too, not only can it be too expensive in places like America some countries don’t even have the right medication to prescribe that’s assuming you find a doctor who will actually prescribe them and then that’s assuming you don’t have severe side effects to all of them and none of that even touches on how much more effort it takes to manage it well enough to function like a neurotypical and how the stress of trying to do that can physically and mentally destroy some people

I have had an MRI and they didn't see it. You need a SPECT scan for that. Dr. Amen has videos on it. He shows scans of seven different brain types, he believes there are seven types of adhd, it's very interesting. Just a warning though, these are some long videos, very easy to superfocus on them and lose track of time.

We are born for adventure ...not for safety....someone said that...and i quoted...
Its easy to win the war...but very difficult do live the daily life....someone said that...
    I quoted....
    I am having ADHD myself..
And yes it was terrible snd is now too...but my perspective changed over time...i acquired knowledge about the things that i found troublesome in a daily basis...and found a fix...
Some problems are for the life time...like dandruf...if you use anti dandruff your hair will fall rapidly...if not you will scratch your head and put on a sad smilee.😢
But gastrointestinal problems could be kept under check by some basic measures by regulating the nature of food we intake....so on.
Acceptance of reality + dont judge ourselves and others + engaging in something productive and mindful for you can help....
Most of us have subjectivity... meaning consumed too much by a single subject...let it be father or mother or siblings or sex or god or almost anything x or y..
Detached attachment to anything and understanding nothing is constant may relieve our psyche....

Everyone watches me speed by on the freeway and thinks "wow you're so smart, you think so fast, I can barely keep up". Then we get to a stop light, and they are all calmly waiting with idling engines and a light pressure on the brake pedal. But my throttle is stuck wide open. I have to slam down on the brake pedal hard, while my engine roars and my rear tires pump out plumes of noxious smoke, until I can't breathe and I have to make an illegal u-turn and drive backwards up the on ramp dodging traffic. If my brain engine can't be productive, it has to be counter-productive. It can't just rest.

Likes of Newton and Da Vinci are suspected to have "hyperactive brains" too. This is just a different type of brain, and not necessarily a "disorder" in all cases, and neither disease. But many individuals might need attention, when their profession is in direct conflict with this brain-type. For others, "hyperactivity" could be rewarding, if channeled into the right skillset (usually the ones that needs rapid thinking and frequent context switches - like drawing and mathematics).
(We live in a world filled with bogus data and incorrect interpretations. It is better if such "studies" support their argument with the actual data, than just present summaries and conclusions.)
Problems happen when the hyperactive brain doesn't receive correct nurture and a correct skillset to fuel the reward system (low dopamine).
The low volume of prefontal is due to the hyperactivity/overuse.

Most people do experience time as linear but it is an actual fact not linear at all which makes me wonder if it's just by chance that we so happen to be living in a world that is mostly populated by people who perceive time as linear and because the other is under represented they class it as a disability which it automatically becomes in that case if you are under represented

Yeah ADHD can be “managed” but that vague phrasing may lead one to believe that with enough work and effort one can overcome most of their ADHD symptoms and function like a neurotypical which is true for some people but absolutely not true for everyone with ADHD especially those who can’t be medicated effectively for whatever reason and even for those who can function like a neurotypical putting in so much more effort to do so can lead to severe burnout and increased rates of stress related health issues ADHD is not just a different neurotype in a society built for neurotypicals it’s a genuine disability for many with it and that doesn’t make any of us less than or less valuable or less deserving of a happy life
