Thank you. I didn't know this function on the MC-101. Another string on the MC-101's amazing bow!!! EDIT: I have just spent a few hours exploring the Chord Designer and it is so powerful. If anyone thinks they need the Aira J-6, S-1, T-8..... think again - the MC-101 has it all ( and more ) under the hood and the more you explore the MC-101 the better it gets.
Great video, as always. Thanks! It's so funny that you talk about this synth as "low price" when in my country costs three full months of salary (and credit cards are no option because of interest). But your videos are inspiring enough to make music whit the things you have and having a good time, right? Have a nice day!
dude, what a powerful and humbling comment this is. you're right. I should have said "comparatively low price", meaning relatively to machines by other brands. I'm super glad you still found the video inspiring though, thank you, I'll try to do better!
You know, it’s quite pricey for a groovebox. However you can get two cheaper and easier to use boxes for like 200-250$ total. Making grooves is gear independent skill. Hopefully you’ll find your dream machine without breaking the bank
@@HotStrange it’s very well stuffed indeed, however, it’s not only features that matter, it’s also important how easy and quickly they are accessible, how fast you get the result. Menu diving and tight UI probably is the biggest con. I even think i’d sacrificed part of features for more fluent workflow. But i really like the size, mobility, clips, configurable performance fx mode aka stutter
Nice video! I agree the ability to freely play chords makes the 101 a surprisingly unique option in the tabletop groovebox space. I’ve always felt super limited by stuff like the electron and polyend boxes and even the circuits because they struggle with it. It also benefits a lot from an external keyboard, where you can intuitively record the velocity and microtiming of each note. Nice jam at the end, looking forward to more mc-101 videos.
dude! your video on sound design on the MC101 really helped me getting to know this incredible little machine! so it means a lot that you'd comment on my video! I agree with everything you're saying. I'm probably gonna try and get an arturia keystep to go with this setup!
man, my theory is pretty trash - I know what scales are and extended chords and whatnot, but in terms of putting them all together I have no clue what I'm doing ahaha
Despite issues i have with the mc101 ill go to bat for it every time...the things it does do, it does really well. And yes, i use the chord mode.. its essential if you dont have a midi keyboard on hand to get some juicy jazzy piano licks going.
I have the MC-101 and was thinking about getting the J-6 for this exact feature, but since you've showed me this I think you've saved me forking out for that so thank you!
aha good think I did because not only you have the great chord designer on the MC101 but also I'm pretty sure that, in the sound editor, you get the same waveforms and filters as the J-6...??
@@BIGUMAMI J-6 sounds not so great, but if you hang it on a synth like the Juno or Deepmind or even the Mk2 and let them play the chordsby the J-6, it expands the machine (J-6) by a 1000 fold.
You are the 'bee's knees' this just changed my life🙏🏼. I tried it and I still can't believe how amazing it is. After all actually playing chord progressions on these 16 pads is not that intuitive.
yesss! that's the cool thing about it! whatever you do in chord mode simply gets recorded as normal notes in the sequencer! I forgot to cover arp mode in the video. great shout!
Great tutorial and thanks for the video. But I didn't understand in the chord designer how to make a 3 note or 4 note chord. When I try in SOUND I hear something like the tonic + the fifth, I can't get the chord
it's got some pretty good "basic" synth sounds, as well as a patch designer where you can buld your own sounds, also using some decent filter emulations... definitely give it a try if you can!
Hi thank you very much for this video :) .Do you know by any chance if I can enter sus, 7th, dim and so on into the chord designer as well? Or is it basically just major minor? I checked the mc-101 manual and can`t even find a chord designer section unfortunately.
Problem is samples are other peoples work! I'd never use them as I feel its cheating but one shots aren't to bad. I know that's not the case I just think if your going to make original music make it all from scratch and with today's VSTs there's no reason you cant. For DAWless jams I have a Roland JD-08 Roland TR-08 and a Roland Bassline for some squelch...
I have to disagree. people don't sample because it's easier, or because they don't have enough plugins. they do it because it's fun, and it opens up creative pathways that would've never occurred to either the original composer or the current one. of course any commercial release must also clear the sample, which obviously entails giving the original author a percentage. it's a very different proposition than straight up plagiarising someone.
Samples are not stealing, unless you’re pulling a jack harlow and just putting a drum loop over a looped part of another song (and even then he’s still helping the original artist get paid again for a song that came out nearly 30 years ago). If you’re rearranging the parts, resampling, modifying the sound in a meaningful way, then you’re iterating. Most artists that work with samples are really open about who/what they are sampling, and I’ve discovered tons of music I would have never come across. Only corporations and snobby elitists push those “rules”, us musician folk don’t need those vibes around. Don’t be afraid to try literally anything. Rules don’t exist, just learn every technique you can, sampling included. Sampling gang 4eva, much love! ❤

couldn't agree more!
Thanks for this TOP video! I own the 101 since 2022 and I didn't understand the chord designer! You have open my eyes 👀
oh wow! Glad I could help!
So glad you made this video. I bought MC-101 three years ago and still hadn't figured out that chord mode is this useful!

Brazil, Jamaica or South Africa? @fredh9808
@@wickeddubzdepending on the country for us. For the cost in USD the 101 offers a TON for the price.

Oooooomfgoooood! Thanks to show it easiest! I’ll be waiting the next video about 101! This is a reborn of my mc 101
so glad to hear that!
More 101 vids! I love how you explain, and show it in use... plus, that kiss at the end was sweet... Keep bringing the zest
Didn't know this existed in such a flexible form. Will have to try it out. Thanks for the video!!
yeah, I love it so much, it's an absolute game changer for me!
Thank you. I enjoy my MC-101 very much. Someone with your skills deserves the MC-707, everything great about the 101 and more.
thank for the kind words! I actually prefer the form factor and portability of the 101 so that works for me!
Hit us with some theory soon. This was great. I have this and I always forget it can do this.

Roland J-6 into the SP :) ;)

Great video on an often overlooked feature of this mighty little machine!
it's awesome isn't it?
@@BIGUMAMI definitely my favourite, especially when paired with the M8.
@@rowdyvoyeur please do not talk about the M8, I don't want to develop acute G.A.S. 😂

thank you!
Great feature that, being able to modify the chords within the sequencer. Very creative 👍

thank you!
Great tutorial, i didn't recognize the power!
Great vid and yes I also think that the mc101 sampler is better than the new Te Ep133 😅

Shift and Filter is to me UTILITY - SYSTEM
1:00 or you hang it onto a Midi-keyboard.....And do it that way.
yes... but then that would mean that I can actually play, which I cant lolllll
How do you get to the chord designer, and how do you program the chords?
