  • The Roland MC-101 is a very powerful Groovebox and it pack a ton of features. What’s really nice is that the MC-101 is also USB Audio and MIDI class compliant and can connect to both iPad and iPhone. This is great since the 101 doesn’t feature audio inputs, nor can one chop samples on it. Well the iPad and iPhone are excellent sound sources and one can also chop sounds on them. On this video I am showing you how to connect the them up for audio recording and how to import samples, all done over USB. I’m also giving tips of some useful apps.

👊🏼 TIME STAMPS + IMPORTANT INFO

YOU NEED TO SET the MC-101 to [Generic mode] and your firmware should be at least version 1.6. [SHIFT] + [UTILITY] then [SYSTEM SETTINGS], scroll forward to [USB Drv.] Select that and then scroll to [Generic], select that and reboot the MC-101.

    ⚡️LIGHTNING ADAPTERS & POWER
WHY do you need extra power to connect the MC-101 to an iDevice with a lightning adapter. Well I’ve measured how much USB power that the MC-101 needs in order to run and that number is 350mA.
The CCK (MD821AM/A) allows up to 180mA output from an iPad or an iPhone before iOS detects an overload and shuts of the connection.
The Lightning to USB 3 (MK0W2AM/A) adapter allows for up to 180mA without a charger connected. With a charger the adapter allows for up to between 280mA-300mA shutting down the connecting.

@Jakob, thx for the great video as usual. I would add a few of tips/additions :
    - There is one step missing I believe : you need to set your MC-101 in Generic (Class Compliant) mode and you have to have one of the recent firmware versions (I think minimum for Class Compliant v1.3), otherwise the iPhone/iPad will not recognize it.
    - You don't need a hub as far as the iPad with USB-C is concerned : you may just use a USB-C/B cable. Of course a hub can be a confort if you want to connect MIDI controllers at the same time.
    - You don't need a sound card to record from the MC to the iPhone/iPad : the sound card of the MC-101 is bi-directional. Though it will only send the master when in Generic mode, but it's already the case when going through the physical outs to an audio interface.
Keep up your great work on making producing on iOS/iPad OS accessible ;)

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I saw another comment about setting up the generic mode. I think it’s a case of me not remembering that I did that back when USB audio class compliance became a thing.
      .
I completely forgot to mention that you need a newer firmware. I had planned to say something about it. It’s why I added the bit about being able to upgrade with an iDevice by adding the firmware to the SD card over usb. Pretty neat to be able to do this m.
      .
Me adding the bit about the sound interface was not to suggest that you need it in order to record the MC-101. It was to add a way of recording other sounds into the iDevice (sampling stuff and chopping it up on the iDevice for use with the MC-101). I could have been more clear on that. I’ll keep it in mind for future videos. 👍🏼
Thanks for the tips and feedback!

@@JakobHaq No worries. That doesn’t remove any of the pleasure watching your videos. You got talent my friend.
For the sound card, it was worth mentioning indeed. It’s crazy the things you can do with a sound card connected to an iPad.
Eying the just released Roland Go Mixer Pro X which adds a couple of additional I/Os compared to the previous Go Mixer Pro by making the jacks TRRS. Too bad it can only send the master outs from USB.
As for the multi audio device management. I’m in the dev program so let me check if they added that on iOS/iPadOS 15 and post back here if they did ;) who knows. I doubt though.

Selam Aleykum friends. Not sure if I missed it so I share to be safe:
If you only have this small lightning to usb adapter (not the camera connection kit) and get the “device needs to much power” error when connecting to the iPad, I have found a simple solution, no powered usb adapter needed:
👉 Update your MC 101 to at least version 1.60
👉 Put batteries in your MC 101
👉 Hold the mc101 Value knob when turning it on. It switches to battery power and doesnt try to draw power via USB
Found it written in the “Update Manual” for the MC 101 :) Hope it helps!

I wish they implemented more informative screen for mc101. You know, more similar to mc707, but smaller. Mc101 is nice beast, portable, ipad friendly, sounds great. I know one dude who sold mc101, but he wants to buy it again. I use what i have - digitakt with ipad is also great combo, the principle is almost the same.

For the price used an mpc one is incredible value for money , even new it’s a bargain , loads of synth engines ,touch screen , etc, this device is for portable music making , I will be buying one when they go down to about 250 uk , I Have the MPC one and it’s my entire studio and daw in a box , I sold loads of my old synths because I simply have no need for them given that the MPC has lots built in , and new ones are coming with updates all the time , the last update gave us 4 new synths ,if you have the money get the MPC one , you will probably never buy any other machines after buying that one

  • @abberom1

Hi Jakob, if i am not wrong, we don’t need power with lightning as there is a way to force start the mc-101 on battery: you press VALUE knob while starting the machine. It should be ok then with any iOS devices without additional power supply 🙂

    Hey Jakob,
    Great video with the MC-101.
Theres so many possibilities with it and as a followup, I bought the MC-707 and Subscribed to RolandCloud.
Did you know about the VST, AU Zenology Pro for MAC or PC?
The nobs on the MC-101, you can assign each Partial in Zenology to them and have realtime control over your Tones.
There is a plugin on iPad called the ZC-1 Synth but its only used inside of Zenbeats Ultimate Unlock that comes with RolandCloud.
Zenbeats is Universal and Jakob, you would have loved the Android platform so much more as Zenbeats (Cubasis 3 now works on Android too) it works there too.
Im sure you may have heard about all this in General so I wont go on (ADHD, OCD issues).
Unfortunately I haven't been able to download your presets for MixBox?
The IK MultiMedia download resources haven't got your presets available either?
Please can you talk to them to update the Resources and give us those Awesome Presets?
I will look forward to hearing from you and would like to explain my needing them for MultiTracking 16 Audio Inputs directly into iPad Pro (2018) which has been a project in AUM that's finally now running smoothly!

Great video!! I have a 2020 ipad pro with usb-c and a korg kaossilator pro+. I badly want to to connect them together and record loops into loopy pro or create loops in audioshare. I have a similar usb-c hub plugged into my ipad pro 2020 model that is keeping the ipad charged and I still have another usb-c slot and 3 regular usb 3.0 slots to use on the hub. So, do I just pug into the usb slot on my kaossilator pro+ and the other end into the hub and launch loopy pro or audioshare and create loops? I also just want to use fx apps on my kaossilator pro+, so just plug it into the hub, launch an fx app like WOW or elastic fx and go to town? I hope you still answer viewer questions because I have been searching for answers for a very long time on how to make this work! Thank you for any help!!

If you’re talking about MIDI then yes. Multiple MIDI devices can be connected at the same time, almost as many as you like or can power. However if you are referring to the Audio I/Os then that should not be possible. Can you confirm by checking that you able to select/switch between the audio inputs and audio outputs of both these units inside an app, when they’re both connected over USB at the same time. I suspect you would only have one set of audio I/O to choose from. The reason is because iOS does not support aggregate audio devices with multi I/O over USB. This is why iOS selects one device for the audio and it’s usually the last one plugged in when plugging multiple with the help of a USB hub. I’ve even shown this in a video. th-cam.com/video/avDMsyhyd6k/w-d-xo.html
      .
I am continually checking what Apple is up to regarding multi-aggregate devices on a regular basis. So far I have heard nothing new, but I might have missed it and if you have new info then I’d love to hear it. People would go bonkers if this was possible, me included.

Genuine question - given the limitations of the MC-101, and the power of the iPad, what do you gain by using the MC-101 versus a few iPad apps and maybe a simple MIDI controller mappings?

    • @cafetechne
      @cafetechne ปีที่แล้ว

Routing, latency, ability to trigger sequences or patch changes with only hardware latency of a series of hardwired O(1) lookup calls (wrt Big O Notation) vs. software abstraction layers slowing things down with parsers or memory issues or random processes. Just being able to have things set up to have this thing hiding out on the corner of your pedal board vs. setting up a computer near big electromagnets. 5-pin midi is the way.

  • @OttosTheName
    @OttosTheName 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Technically the 101 can chop samples... But you don't want to do that unless you absolutely have to. You can set a startingpoint and endpoint for a sample and do that for each of the 16 pads, but you have to know what arbitrary value you have to set the points to. You can figure it out with a calculator, but it's a real pain. If that's all you have on you on a long trip it could be worth doing. Gabe Miller explains it in a video IIRC.

Let me explain it… I have a novation audioHub 2x4 and mc1000 which just has 0x8 (input outputs) so when I plug the last into the first I get 2x8. Inputs on my novation, outputs on the zomo (mc1000). It was discussed long ago at audiob.us forums… Big hug. Dubbylabby

All depends on your workflow. Having direct connection allows for direct sampling/recording. Some people want that workflow, while others prefer to just make samples in one place and then simply moving them over to another place. In that latter case then yeah, SD card import is fine. In the end it’s all about personal preference when it comes to workflow.

I'm not sure if it's much more powerful than an Electribe, but it actually sounds like something that was designed in the last ten years. (Electribe has a sound that you might like, but it's not exactly modern sounding.)

Haha! Yes! See we all have preferences. That’s how I feel about every piece of gear I have including the iPad. Once I got my iPad and once I found apps like Borderlands Granular, SAMPLR, TC-11, Gestrument and Yellofier, something happened and I was making different music. It was an eye opener. I had been dreaming of a touch device that could become anything (synth, drummachine, sampler etc). Here I had it and it changed me. And to day the platform has grown into a true powerhouse and I’ve been producing all of my stuff on here like videos, music and graphical material.
      .
But, I still can’t get away from how good it feels to use hardware with dedicated controllers. Stuff I don’t have to setup with MIDI controllers in order to get stuff going. It’s a very different workflow setting up a dawless jam session compared to an iPad Jam session. That’s how I got into music from the start with hardware, then introducing early computers.
      .
Both worlds have something different to offer me. It’s nice to have a car. But I love riding busses and trains to. 😉💜

Honestly I don’t see any reason how owning one of these would improve anyone’s workflow over simply using the iPAD+a simple midi controller like the Launchpad Mini/akai mpk mk3, etc… 😁

Does seem redundant, however hardware gives you different results and a more tactile connection to your music.
Ingenuity is bred in limitations.. IOS options will make your head spin.

Even for hardware I found the MC101 too frustrating to work with. I do use an ipad but keep it limited too a few select apps like Koala, Air, etc.

Roland should of just added 1/4 inputs for sampling into the mc-101. Jesus christ. Have to do a 10 steps just to sample into this thing. Or just make another record source option besides PC in a firmware update to be able to sample from any device over usb. My god Roland…

I’m even discouraged from trying out the Zen Packs from the Roland Club BS. I can’t figure out if you have to pay a membership fee or whether to buy the $.99 Packs. They are so afraid that someone is going to steal them that they make it a pain in the butt for the actual purchaser of the 101. To be honest I’m pretty nervous every time I try to update the machine.
