Samsung Family Hub Refridgerator No Ice and Communications Error Fix

  • This video is to fix a frozen ice maker and to clear the communications error that comes up on the family hub screen. Communications error is at the 3:45 minute mark. Easy fix for both but be sure that if you are clearing a frozen ice maker that you do not leave the refrigerator in force defrost. Make sure to turn it off after about 30-45 minutes and restore the fridge back to normal.

    Thanks so much for this! We had what I can only describe as an ice dam that had accumulated near the auger piece, to the point where the ice bin wouldn't even go in all the way. This helped us get it un-jammed.
    It's absolutely ridiculous that Samsung doesn't say in the manual or on the website anywhere how to do a defrost. There's a label on the freezer drawer that I **think** has instructions for a basic defrost, but it's illegible after having our fridge for a couple years.

    Thank you for your assistance with this. I tapped my corners over and over, above the line nearest to the corners, nothing happened. I did turn off the red switch and wait 1 minute. Booted back up, tried again. Tapping got no where. Doesn’t appear to be any other way to get to the main function? Maybe I’m not tapping correctly? My ice maker had a little frozen at the front-bottom but that appeared to be the only spot. It’s making ice very slowly and small pieces. Not sure what to do from here.

      Make sure you’re in the fridge manager. It can take a few tries and can get frustrating.

    Mine has a decent block of ice. We used our fridge for about a year with the ice maker and then moved into a rental that had a fridge so we just used it as a fridge but no ice maker and then after about a year tried to hook up the water line and start using the ice maker. Do you think the hose retained some water and it froze over that year? I am currently running this defrost now but should I keep it running until the ice is completely off the ice maker?

    Does this method (FD) ONLY defrost the ice maker or is it heating up the freezer too? Thank you

      It’s a defrost for everything, that’s why you don’t leave it on.

    Thanks for your help with this matter. But I followed up steps,and when I hit the force test it says " No Connection " . Any idea of why this came up?

      You might have to call Samsung. If it’s a known issue, they might fix it for free. My fridge is 3 years old and they replaced my ice maker and the main board at no cost.

    Thanks for this! mine isn't making ice but I also don't see ice on the unit. could it be the feeder line that is frozen?

      Run the defrost cycle for a bit. You can also call Samsung and see if they will replace your ice maker, they replaced mine after it froze up again and I didn’t have to pay for anything.

      @@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY mine did too, and called Samsung direct and they had it replaced/fixed free of charge. THANKS! But at least I was able to continuing doing this so I had ice until it was replaced.

    The Engineering mode didn't turn up the second time so I cannot cancel the function. Is there any other way to activate Engineering mode?

      You have to keep trying, it may take a few tries.

      I just held my two thumbs in place and tapped alternately. Don't put your thumbs so high that messages pop up.

      If the Engineering mode is not popping up (mine wasn't either) just hit the red switch on the top of the right side door that he shows in this video and wait 60 seconds before turning the switch back on. Just like phones, sometimes the screen just needs to turn off and on again to work properly.

    My fridge keep restarting. It always go back to the "welcome to family hub" screen. I can't even do factory reset because it takes time and it's resetting before the factory reset done. What should I do? Just have this for a week and this issue occur.

      Open the little door at the top of the right side door and switch off the computer. Wait a few minutes and turn it back on.

    Thanks for video, but I would have to go to the developer menu, it is password protected, before Tizen 6 it was 1122, but now it is an adrees unfortunately. But I have to change my software again, does anyone have the new alphanumeric code?
    Unfortunately Samsung won't give it to me even though my warranty has expired.

    Hi, our family hub freezer isn't functioning as it should. It is warm inside, the temperature on screen is -19 but the actual temperature inside is about -7.

      @@densvenskaelinbella4499 Try doing a full shit down of the family hub. At the top of the right side door, there’s a little plastic cover and there is a red switch inside. Turn that off, wait a few minutes and then turn it back on. See if that works but if not, you might need a tech to take a look.

    Is there any water I have to worry about when it defrosts? Or does it naturally drain somewhere?

      I didn’t see any but just be sure to turn off the defrost after about 10-15 minutes. The ice maker defrost pretty fast and I’m not sure if the freezer will defrost if you leave it on too long.

      @@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY Well, I thought it was running for 20 minutes. Even heard the chime when I initiated it. I went back to check when my timer I set went off and it wasn’t defrosted. I went into Engineering Mode, and it was now longer on. Did I do something wrong?

    Didn't work for me, left in defrost mode for 12 hours and ice maker is still frozen. Seems like I'm missing something here. The defrost didn't seem to be working at all.

      Call 1-800-SAMSUNG and they will replace it and the main board for free. Mine acted up again and I called, they came out a few days later and replaced it. Didn’t cost me anything.

      Craig after 20 minutes the beeping stopped and when I went back the defrost was unclicked, test cancel was selected automatically, does the force defrost stop automatically?

    Mine isn’t clogged and makes no ice, it’s been broken for months and I don’t know why :(

      Try defrosting and resetting the ice maker. There is a small button (top right) of the ice maker. Just press and hold until you hear the chime.

      Then that’s a dead ice maker. Did you go into settings and make sure the ice maker is turned on?

      Call 1-800-SAMSUNG to see if your model is eligible for replacement. Mine iced up again and I called and they came out and replaced the ice maker and main board.
