As someone who does actually does do HEMA and is only 5'3 I can vouch that yes, closing the gap when fighting someone bigger then you without getting hit is *super* hard, I've gotten my ass kicked a million different ways sparring with people who are 6 feet, forget fighting someone who's 8 feet! 🤧

In the book Oberyn drives his spear through Gregor's gut with such force that the haft snaps and he's consequently impaled on it. Gregor then bear hugs Oberyn further onto the snapped haft, and punches his head to a pulp with a mailed fist before succumbing to his wounds (Manticore Poison from Spear Tip not withstanding)

That Dothraki was not Drogo and was caught with only an anti-light infantry weapon at hand. It makes absolutely NO SENSE to think Drogo would go with daggers and anti light infantry weapons to a duel he can prepare for. @@simonsalgueiro6217 It makes sense because those are the weapons the Dothraki use, the Dothraki do not use swords or spears in the books or show, nor do they use clubs. This is likely because the Dothraki never really had to fight people in full plate, so they don't have much experience with that, and the fact that they typically are on horseback. While the curved Arakhs they use would be horrible against armor on the feet, on horseback it'd do alot of damage against any heavy armor just due to the kinetic energy coming in on a horse.
It would make very very little sense for Drogo to use a spear like Oberyn as it isn't a weapon he's trained with or has any experience with, not that spears take alot of time to learn, but it still wouldn't make much sense for a Dothraki to suddenly use them.

One detail about the Mountain not a lot of people mention is how perceptive and precise the Mountain can be. In the books when the mountain kills the knight at the tourney, the hound mentions that the mountain had noticed how his opponent’s gourget wasn’t put on properly leaving his neck vulnerable and so deliberately aimed for the throat so he could kill him. Which is a pretty impressive feat I would say considering how hard a target the neck would be while ride a horse in a joust.

The sword master managed to overcome the spear a grand total of once out of roughly 30 attempts. It can be done but its very bloody difficult. Your spot on about the armour too. Gregor can probably use the great sword as a concussive weapon against plate but it at least prevents the glancing blows from slicing you up 😂 your also spot on about the weapon, you need something with reach that can equalise/exceed the damage that gregor can give you. For a HEMA practitioner I'm surprised that you did not address: *Acceleration* , *Deceleration* , *Leverage* and *Weight* combined with *Momentum*
In books, it's said that the Mountain wields a two-handed sword in one hand as a normal person wields a one-handed sword in one hand. In reality, we can't do this(wielding two hand sword in one hand as effectively as one hand sword in one hand) because of weight and leverage. That does not concerns Mountain. Now about the momentum and weight, Imagine having a hydraulic machine swinging two hand sword with high psi(pressure), an unarmored person would be cut in half, and the armored person would die due to his organs being devastated by kinetic/concussive force.

Any attack from Gregor is basically fatal while it’s incredibly hard to get in a fatal attack on him so most opponents would have to dodge around him waiting for an opening and one mistake would lead to him getting a hit in and killing his opponent. Jamie is one of the few opponents who could manage to defeat him by dodging and hitting weak points but still there are many mistakes that would easily lead to his defeat.
Jamie could end up close enough to be grabbed, dead.
He could misjudge distance and be hit by Gregors massive blade, dead.

    Based on books, not show:
1.- Arthur Dayne (in GRRM words, strongests swordsman to ever appear in the books)
    2.- Young Robert Baratheon (I guess 50-50)
3.- Jaime Lannister (much stronger in the books than in the show: in GRRM words, the most skilled swordsmen alive. Anyways, let's say a 50-50)
4.- Oberyn Martell (actually won, and would have survived and kill him if just finished the job instead of talking, even without poisson)
5.- Young Barriastan Selmy (almost as good as Arthur Dayne)
6.- Younger Victarion Greyjoy (he may stand a chance)
7.- Syrio Forel or any of the First Swords of Braavos (with a real sword, although they are not trained to fight full armored warriors, these guys are no joke, thus having a fair chance if they play the Oberyn game)
8.- Daemon Blackfyre (legendary warrior, seems to be the strongest Targaryen swordsman)
9.- Areoh Hotah (people forget this guy, but he butchered a white cape like if he was nothing, and wields a proper weapon for the job)
Why Khal Drogo can't: dothraki use arakhs, designed to attack unarmed enemies from a horse. In ADWD (the 5th book), old Selmy kills a super strong arena warrior that fights with an arakh with no trouble thanks to his armor. Hence, Drogo would stand no chance against almost any professional knight.
In "power levels" they would be something like:
    Dayne: 100
    Daemon: 95-99
    Selmy: 95-99
    Robert: 90-95
    Oberyn: 90-95
    Jaimie: 90-95
    The Mountain: 90-95
    Hotah: 85-95
    Victarion: 85-95

The contest starts on a cloudy day, with no sun reaching the fighters. As the fight goes on, the clouds eventually move revealing the sun. Gregor is the first to notice, and puts the sun behind him.
Tyrion then thinks, or comments that Gregor is dim. But within him, are the instincts of a warrior.

And well, not only was Jon LOSING, but Podrick was completely humiliating him. And yes, Jon was obviously trying very hard to win.
It was similar to the ending of the Brienne vs. Jamie fight where we see Jamie trying desperately to win and Brienne effortlessly blocking every strike (one-handed) while backing him up all the way across the bridge.

Gregor is so strong that its seemingly unfair. Only Oberyn could kill him and survived if he hadn't stopped midway for the confession. Revenge is a powerful motivator.
Jaquen could kill him, as his agility and experience is going for him. As a master assassin he'd research his opponent even if its a 1v1 battle.
He'd taunt Gregor and I won't be surprised to know if his blades were dowsed in poison similar to Oberyn's. The battle would be similar to Batman vs Bane and we know what the odds might be.

Fighter who I think might have had a chance to kill Ser Gregor in a fight (no guarantees)
Robert Baratheon in his fighting days. Robert was huge at about 2m tall (6'7"), still over a foot shorter than Clegane, but still big enough to not being at great strength disadvantage. Plus, his warhammer was supereffective against plate armor or shields. One good blow and it might break and arm or shatter a rib.
Barristan Selmy. Maybe not at the time of the War of the Five Kings, but maybe during Robert's Rebellion when he was younger, and possibly the most skilled swordsman in Westeros. However, a longsword would do anything to Gregor's armor, so Barristan might have to use a polearm or spear as Oberyn did.
Sandor Clegane. Cleganebowl might still happen in the books, and Sandor although smaller is still big and strong enough to hurt Gregor. In some scenarios he could hurt and tire him enough to land a killing blow
Greatjon Umber. One of the biggest and strongest men in Westeros, highly experienced warrior, skilled with a greatsword, he could do it with a bit of luck, but no great chances.
Jaime Lannister, pretty much the same as Ser Barristan.

On another note it's interesting to see how many (show-only) replies underrate Jaime Lannister. It's clear from the books and GRRM's comments that he's an absolute prodigy, equal in skill to Barristan Selmy in his prime and Arthur Dayne (although without the magic sword) and extremely strong.
Unfortunately in the show they use him to sell various other characters:
    1) We were told but not shown that he cut through Stark forces and killed many skilled fighters before being taken down (he almost gets to Robb and Robb knows that would have meant his certain death) - if we saw this, we'd understand better how much of a prodigy he is before he is maimed
    2) The show had Brienne outright defeat Jaime while in the books her internal monologue notes that she is barely able to fend off a manacled, starved version of him and nobody would be able to defeat him otherwise (and his internal monologue shows how impressed he is with her)
    3) The show depicts his fight with Ned Stark as being roughly equal, where in the book he is playing with Ned and Ned knows it
    4) Bronn's boast to Jaime that he would easily take him out even if he had both hands is show-only and laughable if you've read the books (Bronn is definitely a skilled and cunning veteran in the books, but he's never depicted to be the sort of fighter who can easily cut through people like the great fighters do)
This does no favours to the story overall and Jaime's character in particular.

-During the Defiance of Duskendale, Barristan snuck in on his own and killed everyone in his path. This included the castle's master at arms. He rescued Aerys II.

Also, prime Jamie with two hands was an f'n problem.
The other choices would be Barristan the Bold, and Arthur Dayne.
Barristan I think is 50/50, although if we're speaking of a prime Barristan, he'd probably wipe the floor with The Mountain.

I’m no expert mid evil warfare historian but generally I think a war hammer would be more difficult to wield and could require greater skill. Thats my justification for my assumption that Robert could have defeated Gregor. A war hammer is specifically designed to puncture plate, it’s never specifically stated that the Mountain has the strongest or the heaviest plate due to its thickness alone. Instead it’s always stated that Gregor’s size makes his plate more cumbersome than any other human could withstand.
Assuming both fighters are at an equal advantage, Roberts generally more intelligent than Gregor. He could easily have drawn the same conclusions as Bronn and Oberyn, circle him and use your shield when necessary until the Mountain tires out. Tyrion reflects that the Mountian has great combat instincts true enough, but still Oberyn being more intelligent and skilled still resulted in the Mountain’s defeat during Tyrion’s trial. Always confused me when people said Drogo could take the mountain since Jorah proved that Dothraki don't know a good way to fight people in full armor, Nobody is beating the mountain in brute strength especially when he's armored. The whole reason he was the richest family in Westeros' preferred champion was that he's a giant battle hardened sociopath. There's a scene in clash of kings where the mountain's horse gets shot out from under him and he falls into a group of stark soldiers and proceeds to butcher his way through all of them despite their best efforts to kill him, all of this seen through Tyrion's POV and he isn't concerned the mountain is in any danger.

Show Bronn absolutely! Book Bronn not so much. They gave him quite the boost in the show because of how likable he was. In the books he's very very good but not up there with the best. Thanks for watching! Liam

is this list based on them vs normal mountain? or them vs zombie mountain? also is there any confirmation that zombie mountain is different from normal mountain except that he can't talk anymore?

Interesting list. Can't argue with any of the five presented in the list for all the logical reasons presented, including that Jaqen H'ghar could kill him, but only in assassination. However without any truly notable fighters.
Prime Robert Baratheon, Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy, Jaime Lannister, Grey Worm, Daario Naharis and Rhaegar Targaryen could all have a fair chance against him, while Oberyn Martell toyed with him and died due to rage and stupidity. Brienne and The Hound are close, but as stated they have similar fighting styles and in order to win plot armor usually gets employed as he is far stronger, wearing unreal armor due to inhuman strength even before the monstrosity the show made him into and absurd range.
Loved the video. Very realistic. Hope to see more of it in comparison to fighters that could actually challenge him and lived in his age like formerly listed.

Wun Wun would crash him! 😛 Close distance would be a disaster for the Mountain and even at far distance Wun Wun could take a one-hit kill with his oversized bow.

At this point in the books, Sandor is the most dangerous man in Westeros 1v1. He's in his twenties, bigger than Brienne and almost as skilled as prime Jaime. He's so far above everyone else at this point it's not even fair. The only real challange to him now would probably be Hotah. Sir Robert Strong doesn't count.

Jaqen is a wildcard. As a faceless man it's hard to call him a simple assassin instead of a killer/murderer.
With this in mind its hard to say what he does against the mountain.
Maybe he poisons him somehow before the fight. Maybe he uses some old magic we dont know of yet to kill him instantly.

    • @curtismcpsycho8212

Ngl I felt Jaqen was underestimated because of the usual feat comparison if jaqen's an assassin he would probably prep accordingly especially for someone like the mountain.

Considering how well Martel did against the Mountain I'd say Greyworm would have a similar chance he's fast & has long reach & he's actually more cold & calculated than Martel, so I think Greyworm could take him or at least had a very good one on one chance

I'm not so sure. The unsullied weren't really trained in individual combat the way Oberyn was. They're trained to fight as a unit, so his spear training would be a lot different than Oberyn. They're trained to hold the line, so their formation doesn't collapse, as opposed to do the sort of hit-and-run tactics that Oberyn used to gain the upper hand. It's sound training for war, but not so much in a 1v1 engagement.

  • @jeremy1860
    @jeremy1860 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I still think my personal fave, Grey Worm, has a chance. He's the best of the Unsullied, who are already regarded as among the best soldiers in the world. He's disciplined, has been trained since childhood and primarily wields a long-reach weapon with his spear. Honestly the only thing holding him back from being a sure thing is the fact that his armour is lighter than Gregor's and he doesn't match him in terms of raw, physical strength 🤔

    • @QualityPen
      @QualityPen ปีที่แล้ว +2

It seems to me that the Unsullied are highly overrated.
ALL noble combatants were trained since childhood. Kids who would become knights started learning about fighting at around 8. They’d serve as a page, then a squire, and finally be knighted once they have proven themselves worthy.
Knights are, first and foremost, a warrior caste. They’d also have professional instructors and be given extensive individual attention. Would the Unsullied, a disposable army of slaves, be given such high-quality training? At the very least, knights would be at least as skilled as the Unsullied.
If I’m not mistaken, the Unsullied are castrated before undergoing puberty. If that’s the case, they are deprived of the increased muscle mass typical of adult men and will by physically comparable to women. An average woman has only 55% of the upper body strength and 75% of the lower body strength of an average man. In other words, the Unsullied are physically extraordinarily weak. That affects how strong their strikes are and it affects how fast they are (the stronger you are, the quicker you can accelerate or redirect your weapon).
That doesn’t sound to me like the Unsullied are especially potent combatants. Physically weak, not as skilled as knights, and armed with low-quality equipment.
