  • One year renovating a ruin in Montenegro. A one year renovation timelapse Montenegro. Join me on a journey through the ups and downs of the past year as I provide an honest update on our plans for renovation project in Montenegro.
From the excitement of starting with a team of workers to the frustration of dealing with translation issues and weather delays, every step has been a learning experience. I'll take you through the process of removing roof tiles, assessing the state of the walls, and navigating through construction dilemmas.
Through it all, I've discovered the beauty of working with traditional craftsmanship and engaging with the local community. Despite the setbacks, there's a sense of gratitude for the progress made and the opportunity to connect with the land and its people.
Join me as I reflect on the challenges, celebrate the victories, and look forward to the future of this ambitious project.
    With love,
    Rianne

A beautiful and sensitive recount of your past year Rianne. I wondered what happened to you. Not a builder, not a gardener ... and yet here you are. One day at a time ... all is possible. Hugs XXxx

    Dear Rianne and Family,
It’s truly captivating to follow your passionate pursuit of a dream and vision, especially since my own family experienced a similar journey. Over two decades ago, I inherited my mother’s ancestral property in the highlands of the Kuci region, located in the southeastern part of our country. Like your house, it too lay in a near-ruined state, and abandoned for decades.
Living in New York at the time, we faced the challenge of allocating precious time to focus on this ambitious project. Our commitment was to preserve the original character of the house, which had stood since the 18th and 19th centuries. Salvaging the stone walls, beams, and original roof tiles became our mission, even though we had to make some compromises along the way.
To stabilize the structure and prevent wall collapse, we employed a concrete crown. Regrettably, we had to discard the supporting beams and wood planks that once held up the second floor. Worms and termites had weakened the wood beyond repair. Yet, we breathed life back into the original house.
Our efforts extended beyond the house itself. We planted a vineyard and nurtured several cherry, pear, and apple trees. The foremen overseeing the project often scratched their heads, unable to understand why anyone would invest in renovating a derelict, old stone house when building anew seemed simpler and more cost-effective.
While our initial plan included spending more time on the property and perhaps establishing a modest ecological bed and breakfast, life had other plans. We moved to Switzerland, our children grew up, necessitating regular school attendance, and our professions tied us to our urban lives. Nevertheless, every summer school break, we return to our beloved property-a cherished tradition that keeps our connection alive.
Wishing you the best of luck and abundant success with your project! Perhaps one day, we’ll have the pleasure of dining at your future restaurant.
    Warm regards

I'm so happy to see the progress you've made. They might look like steps backwards - they're all forwards.
It's so beautiful there! So inspiring!
I only found your channel a few days ago, so I got lucky with a new video very quickly.
Looking forward to seeing your plans, such as for the sunken bath. And how you aim to keep out cows from your kitchen garden & deer or whatever else.
Love all the wild flowers & visitors and the wonderful men and women contributing to you.
    And your beautiful voice.

Big applause for the enthusiasm and love you show for this project and for Montenegro
Please, in the future, dedicate a video to the paperwork that needs to be provided for setting up a glamping project, because it is something that is still in its infancy in our country and is not often represented.
It will be interesting to watch your further progress, many greetings from Tivat

From a personal interest being a stone mason by profession I can't wait to see how the project will turn out to be. And as someone that bought a house and an old property in the middle of a rural area as well I can somehow relate even though not this much since this is a bit on the extreme difficulty. I wish you the best and I hope the weather will give you some space to actually finish stuff.
    Succes!

Greetings from Montenegro. I watched your video and to my surprise, I saw a master craftsman Mirko working on your ruin. Funny enough, he happens to be our neighbour. He's a great man, indeed. We moved to Montenegro about three years ago and love it. The beautiful nature that surrounds us. Anyway, I thought, I would say a quick hi, and good luck in completing your project. May all your dreams come true. Ps: If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to ask.

Dear Riane, thank you for posting your video. In another rock house ruin, I saw the builder cleaned the rocks and after a time realized, he needed to use a pesticide. I am curious if you will need to use a pesticide, too.

Rather than find more rocks, i guess I would have suggested go to a place where you can remove all the rocks first, because plants dont grow well in rocks. I guess in time you will learn many of the skills needed. In the mean time, I would suggest watching gardener sites and copy their ideas.

Hi..a lovely relaxingg video . But please remove the honeysuckle you planted at the base of your young fruit trees . The honey suckle will grow faster than the trees taking away light water and nutrients from the young trees, at best your trees won't grow well ..nat worse the fruit trees will die . Best to move the honeysuckle to grow up big old trees which can cope with it .. also your raised bed withe the rocks around.. the rain will wash all the soil away through the gaps between stones . You need stone and mortar or a wooden raised bed with lining . Do keep on learning though x
