I tried that trick of putting their poop in the litter tray as soon as I brought them home and although they poo there and everywhere they seem to be peeing in it exclusively so I'm thrilled! Only took them a couple days, very smart little animals.
@The pigeon Weirdo Just because we're used to seeing guinea pigs in small cages doesn't mean anything bigger is ideal. They like to have a lot of space to run about. This cage is too small. Yes, it's better than many, but it's still too small.
@The pigeon Weirdo We are all used to seeing guinea pigs in small cages because that's how the majority of them are kept. And I'm not judging anyone, I'm saying the cage is too small. It is and you agree, so what's your problem? Please stop with this offended nonsense. We're adults and I said a cage is too small. I didn't say she should be hung for it! Good grief!
@The pigeon Weirdo Again, we are all used to small animals being kept in small cages. I didn't say you do it. I didn't say I do it. I didn't say you or I think it's right to do it. I said it's what the majority of people do. Which it is. Again, what's your problem? Why are trying to argue with straight up facts?
@The pigeon Weirdo Lmfao. THAT was the point I was making in the first place! That people see a cage that is a bit bigger than usual and think it's ok because mostly we see them in tiny cages. So you just argued with me to end up saying the exact same thing I said several comments ago!
my youngest goes in one place on his own! it’s pretty funny actually, even when he’s running about he wont pee unless there’s a dustpan or tray/box for him to jump in haha
My little MOUSE pottie trained herself. During her second year, I put a little glass dish (a candleholder, actually) with a WIDE rim on it into her enclosure, and she would perch on the rim with her back end over the "bowl" and take care of things -- most of the time. I'm not sure how much the daily cleaning procedure affected her behavior, but I very often took her enclosure (an acrylic fish tank) into the bathroom with me in the morning to clean it up while I was getting ready for work. (Disclaimer: I understand that this is a lot easier to do for a mouse tank than for a guinea pig corral. Your results will necessarily vary!) Mousie was always EXTREMELY interested in anything I was doing, and she spent a lot of time out of her enclosure, observing the world from my shoulder, running around inside my shirt, peeking out of the sleeve cuffs. I really believe that she picked up on the fact that there was a bowl where the "giant mousies" (humans) put their stinkies, and she wanted one too. Once I gave one to her, she immediately used it correctly. I would praise her profusely for using her little latrine, and then take it out to dump it and wash it for her. >sigh< I miss that little girl so-o-o-o-o- much ...
I guess her mom taught this mine already does this an she popcorn's every time I walk by an say hi or take her out its instant zooms an popcorn. 😂 we have had her 3 days she has been thr cutest blessing.
Thanks for this, I will use this tomorrow after school bc tomorrow my “new” pig is moving into my room! Here’s a quick story if you may be concerned... My older (16 yr old) sister has the guinea pig in her room, and sadly she neglects it, the cage isn’t that big (I’m saving up for a new cage, I get 10 dollars a week because I’m just 12.. so I’ll be saving up!)there is poop everywhere, there is only one item in there which is a small ‘cave’ thing? And whenever I go visit it, it usually has no water :( plus, my sister barely feeds it well. But that’ll change tomorrow and I’m real excited, I’m doing lots of research too :)
you are and will be a great pet owner thank you for sharing this story keep it up and reap the rewarding feelings from the animals that will love you for this.
Hm.. Maybe you could ask your parents to get a second one? They're actually group animals and get lonely when they're alone. But it's amazing how you want to take the responsibility. I'm sure it will be happier with you!
For my piggies I use a corner litter tray with the safe litter mixed with paper bedding and have a hay rack right next to it so my piggies will mostly do there business in the tray while eating. Around the tray I also have some bedding in case they wander a bit and go potty outside of that area but other than that they are pretty good at going in the litter tray. Of course they poop in other parts of the cage but nothing too excessive or crazy like it used to be.
Thank you I did the same thing for a while, with the trays but had similar issues with the bedding, , now I have small potty pads that help, but I have to change a lot . I think I will switch to a larger one . Like what you have . THANK YOU
Our pigs do this naturally. We give them hats to hide in. They turn them over, for buckets to sit in. We stuff them with hay. This is where much of it goes. Their floor stays much cleaner.
Guinea pigs usually pee and poop while eating hay. It would help to move the hay over the litter trays. Also placing some hay in the litter box will encourage them to step in. Also horse kilned pine pellets help with litter scattering and keep the smell to a minimum. Good luck and good job. 👍🏼🎉
I recently saw a young girl n her dad about to buy guide piggies 💞 at Petco and I did politely tell them cause I’m learning too n I’m a rescue piggie mom (some horrible person/family abandoned two in a box on the streets) that the box they were checking out to buy is too small …I get one ain’t got space but some so called homes r just too small n it’s a lot of work but how can u not love to care for those little cute lives they r cute n r super entertaining to watch when they r active. And I also always recommend very special TH-cam channels I have learned from
Thankyou so much. Guinea pigs are SO smart. I had adopted one guinea pig followed this method and he actually was pooping there immediately. The second one I got is a pooper everywhere lol hopefully he will follow his brother and go poo in the litter box
Ive homed rescues for 7 years. If you will use plastic trays such as that, be alert in case one or more of the pigs is a plastic chewer. Most arent, but some are and they could get blocked up and die a horrible painful death. Any signs of nibbling on those trays, get them out. My method is somewhat similar. I use cafeteria trays with an old towel and a fleece on top. These go under the hideys and in corner spots they have chosen. The fabrics are washable and reusable and are changed daily.
Soo I suggest using pellets to go into the litter box DO NOT USE LITTER! Litter can kill them if they take one bite out of it. Add a bunch of hay so they feel comfortable. I think those are some suggestions to people who also need some advice.
For the, step that says see were they normally go to the bathroom there are people who use little bits of paper or things like that, that are meant to hide the poop
I want to litter tray them but I haven’t got the space, what should I do? Also if I do find space should I place it upstairs or downstairs in the hutch?
Hanar Hama hello! I would recommend to place the litter tray in the same level as where your piggies eat. Once you have figured out the best location for the litter box, a piece of fleece bedding could replace the tray if you don’t have much space. 💖
I had my guinea pigs out for lap time for 10minutes.i counted how many poops my 2guinea pigs did. 20 poops! say that's roughly 10 poo's each, that means they roughly poo 1 poo a minute. they poo more than they pee!it's the other way round for us. I think that is why it is hard to train piggies. they don't want to constantly be going toilet every minute to go poo or pee! I don't blame them now for poo and peeing everywhere....even though it is mega annoying. but i will try these tips to see if it makes a difference thank you!
Why am I so late to this? I'm gonna try this.. But I thought them eating their own poo was good for them?! They won't accidently eat the litter pellets will they?
Ahhw E-Any They don’t eat all of their poops, they excrete 2 kinds of poop. They eat the one called « caecals » that contain essential vitamins, such as vitamin K and B-complex. No they won’t accidentally eat their litter pellets, if so, it’s not harmful it’s paper bedding.💖
