    The type of cage you have can have a huge effect on how easy it is to keep clean! If you're looking for your first cage or thinking about an upgrade then this video present the five key factors that will help you decide! 🤔 th-cam.com/video/W43PImmXClI/w-d-xo.html

      Is it ok to just use towels for bedding?

    • @nineblackgoats
      @nineblackgoats ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@welove_promisee I wouldn't recommend it as they don't dry up as fast as fleece. Towels stay damp when guinea pigs pee on them and stepping on damp substrate can cause fungal infections on their little feet.

    Tip: I line the litter box with a puppy wee pad and put absorbent horse stall pellets over it. I keep a box of hay over one side of the litter box. That way they don't soil the hay.

    This helped me so much! My 2 male guinea pigs’s cage has been REALLY stinky and I didn’t know what to do and starting thinking about giving them away, but after these tips I’ve notice that their cage has smelled and looked A LOT cleaner and even though I’ve started doing this for only 2 days. My ginnies have seemed a lot happier I’ve noticed! Thank you 💝

      Boys are always going to smell a bit more because of their urine and scent gland marking.
      But you can minimise the smell by following the ideas in the video so it’s only noticeable if your face is right near it

      Just got my girls recently and did my first big clean today! Combined with my POTS and back problems, it's a big chore that becomes tiring very, very quickly! When my room smelled fresher and the girls were popcorning around, it was all worth it and very satisfying! I love to clean their cage because I can't stand to see them walking around in pills! It made me feel very accomplished!

    I have a 6x2 (14" grids) cage with 4 piggies in it. I use 3 layers for the cage floor. The first layer is a fleece blanket for cushion, the second layer are waterproof fabric pads to absorb any moisture, and the top layer are small fabric pads that are like 12x24 that I can pick up individually and shake off into a lined trashcan. I also use a tray filled with hay in it that I feed them greens in as a litter tray, and in the corner with the water bottle I have another corner tray filled with wood shavings to absorb moisture.

    Wow, our family is learning SO much from you! We recently had 1 of our daughter's 2 piggies pass away. We rehomed a piggie (Cloudy) to bring another companion to (Skylar). Much to our shock 😲, less than a month after Cloudy joined our family, she gave birth to 3 pups! We've decided to keep everyone, so we're searching for a large habitat to build for our expanded guinea family! Thank you so very much for sharing your ideas & what has worked best for you & your piggies! Our entire family loves ❤️ our pigs & pups like crazy, & we want them to have plenty of space to grow & play, while keeping our sanity for keeping up with the cleaning needs of 5 piggies! 💕💕💕💕💕 We appreciate your guidance!

    My five make a lot of mess for such small creatures. I have two of the large fleece pads for the underneath layer which I only change once a week and for the upper layer I use old sheets and I change this every day by rolling it up with all the mess inside. Your set up looks beautiful Sarah.

    Aww Lyra looks so sweet - even after everyone jumped in after her when you topped off the hay! My brother brought home our first pigs back in 1975(!)- I was 7, my brother 10. We weren't always the best then for cleaning, and while my mom was not a fan of gpiggies, she always cared for them in our deficiency! She used to have this huge vacuum that you would attach by hose to the wall (it would dump out into a furnace thingy in the garage!). She would stick the other side of the hose in the piggy houses and vacuum all around them. Sometimes she would accidentally get a piggy tush sucked up in there too! They would popcorn around, acting crazy. I had a good laugh watching you dump hay over the newspaper because I thought, what a perfect way to celebrate political news - let piggies poop on it! I always used to take the time to read the paper right before cleaning so I could then recycle it in the piggy houses. LOL

  • @DibblesDlub
    @DibblesDlub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I completely agree with the cage size and pooping areas. Before I upgraded my guinea pig cage by double the size, my girls would poop anywhere, everywhere. Then when I upgraded it, I realized there wasn't much poop in the main, open area. Instead my girls were mostly pooping in a corner by the hay feeders. Though, there are some stray poops too. My male also does this.

    I use a vacuum to help clean and use a Black and Decker Furbuster with the motorized silicone head. It can clog with hay but it’s easy to clean out and I find the brush head does an awesome job getting the hair and food/hay dust out of our fleece.
    I will say that the first few times we used it the piggies were scared of it. But now they pretty quickly figured out it’s for cleaning and that won them over.

    I'm so thankful I came across your channel when I adopted two senior piggies a month ago. I had two piggies growing up, but this was in the 90s when I was little and neither myself or my parents knew the dangers of keeping them seperate, salt licks, cedar wood chips. Etc. They both still did live along time and one was super sweet that enjoyed lap time and purred and closed her eyes when pet, so I try not to feel too bad about my ignorance. Anyways wow the fleece made such a difference! So much more sustainable and manageable now that I'm a mom with young kids. We love our piggies we have now so much. They went from a small starter cage, veggies only occasionally as a treat from the previous owner, to a nice big Midwest cage with fleece, hidies, and appropriate veggies daily. They popcorn all the time now and it's thanks to your wonderful videos!

    I will have to remember to put towels under the fleece! They always seem to burrow in towels but hopefully won't now that the fleece is over it! I made them a dig box since they like to burrow, but low and behold, they decided it was a litter box!! Still stray poos and pee here and there but I'm very surprised that they decided to go in a box! I love to spot clean their cage and often do it 3-4 times a day! I can't stand to see them walking around in poo! I also immediately soak up any pee the moment I see/hear it! I don't want them getting infected feet! I was so scared of a bad smell before getting them but they actually don't smell very bad!! Their cage has an animal like musk, but they are not nearly as dirty as my dogs!! Love your videos!! Daisy and Honey say hi!!

    I use a rubber brush with my dustpan, its more gentle on the fleece or vet bed and I find does a great job getting the hair up as well. I do have a hand held vacumme with a long thin piece that folds out that makes suction more precise for a hard to reach corner I have if spot cleaning, it works well for poops but not so great for the hair when compared to the rubber bristled brush.

    We have a large cage for our 5 guinea pig girls, but they love to pee wherever they rest. Sometimes they miss the pad underneath them, and the side of the cage gets wet....so, I always run the liner up the side wherever I have their hidey tunnel type houses. I flip their pads one day and change it out the next....some are soaked! They poo wherever and whenever. I have 3 largish litter pans in their cage, and they still go all over. I have resolved myself to the fact that I have messy pigs! 😂 Soon I'll be setting them up with a new cage design, and I'm hoping having even larger litter pans will help.

    The best way to preserve the wooden cage floor is to lay it with linoleum. Then put the fleece on top of it. Actually linoleum in itself might be enough, but we all know how piggies like the extra cozy softness 🤗

    I've got to do a spot clean as the piggies have been inside for 24 hours. Not that they seem to care but they will soon. I tried the vacuum last week but it was too powerful. The main problem I have is that I'm using towels. Which means I need a few of them which makes it a little more difficult. I'm still trying to buy fleece but every time I go too the store in town it's been closed. The girls love burying themselves in the litter-box which is super cute. I only replace the hay a couple times a week as it's so expensive. Stores here only hold lucerne so I have to get it shipped from Sydney.

    what kind of hay do you get. That could get pricey to have to dump hay in the garbage daily. Do you find it is bulk that is cheaper?

    I have a "poover" but its just a very cheap handheld. Its mostly just for after sweeping for all those little hairs and the odd poop for that more "valeted" look I'm lucky my two boys tend to poop exclusively in their haypile so I'm quite lucky

      there's tons of information for c&c cages on the internet, which would probably work well for you! i think she has a video or two on how she built this cage as well :)
