Big news everyone! Microsoft now sells the Cosmetic Plate directly on their website: www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/replacement-cosmetic-plate-for-surface-laptop-studio/8qxscbjs8krj?activetab=pivot:overviewtab
2280 SSDs are considerably cheaper than the 2230 size, right now. So it is good to know this laptop can take either one. You cloned the existing SSD, with the Reflect software, to the new one and the OS was installed for you. That's even easier than a new install!
This is fantastic! Thanks for the video, I'll do this when it comes time to replace the battery which Microsoft is also selling (although it's currently out of stock). You're also 100% correct that this should be industry standard. Let us fix and upgrade ourselves.
Is there any guide about nvme drives compatibility? I upgraded my laptop studio from 256GB to 1TB WD black and after 1 day I started getting BSODs and after a while, the machine would not boot, because it did not recognize the drive anymore. I put the original disk back in and everything was working smooth. Then I got another 1TB drive to upgrade, this time it was 1TB WD blue. Worked fine for 2 days and than a similar scenario. So I guess I am back to the original 256GB again:(
Cool. To backup the existing ssd, could you usb boot a version of linux and just use dd to dump the whole existing ssd? I used to do this for iso's and ide drives but I'm not sure if there's some device protection that prevents ssd access under linux.
There might be some bios configuration changes required, but you should be able to do so if you find a build that supports the firmware (that's a tough one for everything to work properly, but it sounds like you've got some experience)
@@innoiso incidentally, I just watched an iFixit youtube video on how to teardown a Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 which was done by a Microsoft Engineer. Hooray!
Linus from Tech Tips broke his Surface Laptop Studio doing this although in fairness he did not know all the hidden screws he had to remove. So this is doable but not easy. I installed a 4TB 2280 and it's been going strong for over a year now.
I wish the RAM was upgradable, I have the SLS with Dedicated graphics, 16GB RAM and 512 SSD, for me, I am running VM's mostly and its RAM intensive, 16GB just about cuts it but at times the VMs fail to boot due to insufficient RAM resource being available.
no offence, but you're worried not to scratch where you wont see it after putting back the rubber feet but you're sliding the top around the table where I'm sure you'll have scuffs and such.
Do I have to do the storage transfer thing at the start of the video if I do the ssd upgrade with a new studio laptop?. I just bought mine today and I want to upgrade the ssd. So can I skip the storage transfer and get started with opening the laptop?
Hey man, why not use a little heat to soften the adhesive? I’d bet those strips would come off unstretched if you use a hair dryer on it for a couple of seconds.
Maybe if you pulled the feet and cosmetic sticker more gently, it wouldnt deform as much and would go back better. But otherwise thanks for the informative video

Walkthrough was perfect, thank you!
Excellent walk through. Thanks for that.
Thank you for watching!

You should ask ms the compatibility with 3rd party SSD
This is great bro
Appreciate it!
I wonder if you couldn't just take an exacto knife and carve out a small hole where the screws are...
Good video, very educational...will consider upgrading my SSD in the near future (I blame thee Baldur's Gate 3!)
How is the battery life with new ssd ? does the sleep mode work properly or did you notice a higher battery drain ?
I haven't had any issues with sleep or battery drain
@@innoiso that's great, I'll probably upgrade the ssd on my unit too in the future.
Any blue screen or NVME problems?
Has anyone found the trim sticker and rubber feet for sale anywhere yet?
Taobao in Mainland of China has store to sold it

can you put in a 2tb or 4tb SSD like WD SN850X ?
Hey dude, watching this has me wondering is it possible to upgrade the i7-11370h CPU, or adding 2 more cores?
Unfortunately no, it's integrated on the motherboard and not swappable

Don't need to do the storage transfer! Just need to install windows on the new SSD!

Not a bad idea, I’m just not sure if the rubber feet would stretch from the heat as well. I’ll try it next time

Thankfully the replacement rubber feet are only $5!
Do you know if it can be added a 1 tera sdd to the i5 base mode ?
Yes!
Can I ask the tech shop to help install a new SSD card? I'm scared of doing it alone and breaking the laptop itself.
I'm sure if you showed them the Microsoft guide they would do so!
Micrsoft will not sell you a cosmetic sticker. Ive spent hours on the phone and email trying.
It's pretty frustrating! There's even a part number in the guide...
Taobao in Mainland of China has
Can i upgrade RAM?
