Just FYI, conventionally speaking, computer memory refers to the memory in RAM(random-access memory), while storage refers to drives in which data is written to for long term storage without power. RAM requires constant power and loses its data without power while storage drives such as SSDs, HDDs or even DVDs can retain data without power.
I bought one of these used for 140 US dollars with the intention of upgrading the SSD. I was worried about destroying the rubber feet. After a little google time, I found replacement rubber feet directly from Microsoft for $13.00 shipped. Problem solved.
Apparently Microsoft offers replacements for the Surface Laptop 3 and 4 line for those under warranty, hopefully they do the same for the Laptop Go! But yes, it was very painful because I love this little laptop!
@@innoiso fingers crossed for you then! I really like it too. Just not sure what I want to go for. Currently have a desktop but would like a laptop to replace it. Don't really need portability other than around the house so not sure whether to aim for the Surface 4 13.5 inch line or not 🤔
I got this laptop as a lottery prize from my landlord and I love that it runs far smoother than my ancient 00s lenovo, but the paltry memory made me think there's far more it could do if the right upgrades were implemented. Props to you for showing that's the case, will be holding out for a good SSD to install in the future (with a little technical help.)
Great, informative video. Glad you were able to figure this out and help others do the same. But overall I'm disappointed by the design here by Microsoft. There is no need for it to be this complicated to upgrade storage or ram. I've upgraded these components on dozens of laptops without hassle, but even with this teardown as a guide I'm not personally comfortable attempting this fix for a family member who needs more storage for the work they do. If it was my own laptop I'd likely take the risk but for someone else who relies on their device I'd be quite hesitant to try this.
Honestly, this was like watching a thriller movie. I kept gasping and holding my breath many times. Great video though. I have a surface go with a broken screen I was deciding between getting the surface laptop go or simply replacing my screen
Hah thank you it felt like I was in a thriller movie! And I'm sorry to hear that, I'd say depending on the specs of your Go, the Laptop Go could be a big upgrade
The laptop go has a 10th gen Core i5 where the Go just has a Core M3 or a Pentium Gold. In my experience, the extra processing power of the laptop go makes a real difference
These Laptops are now around 150.00 refurbished so if you use the storage you used and the tool kit and the tape you may have 220.00 in it which is cheap. I am wondering if it is worth the effort when you can pickup a faster allthough bigger and heavier laptop from a pawnshop for 200.00. Also i read that the version 2 can be updated to windows 11 but i don't think this version will let you. Is that the case? Thanks for taking the time to do this video it was very informative and impressive performance boost!
at the start when u were getting off the rubber feets, you could have applied some heat, that should have helped with the adhesive and maybe not break the rubber feet

Try heating up those rubber strips with a hair dryer; that will soften the adhesive and make removal easier and safer. Start at one end; once it's soft, lift up and then continue heating and gently lifting until the strip comes free.

Pry the rubber with your hands with the tape still stuck to it, its going to be less messy putting it back just be slow and careful. I just did everything you did, thanks for the teardown.
All I'm asking is why. Why would Micerosoft need to hide the screws under the rubber pads, and why the stupid plastic clips? MS could easily just put a nice looking screw next to the rubber feet, like many other computers, and use weaker clips on the deck. No one will complain about 7 visible screws if they look nice (even MacBooks have them!) and since you already have screws holding on a metal deck, the plastic clips are completely unnecessary. I guess they gotta give you a better reason to buy their more expensive models

@innoiso, Thanks for the video! I found another video from Microsoft Surface Japan which also shows how to upgrade the SSD: th-cam.com/video/I44OXFvcNQQ/w-d-xo.html It is in Japanese, but you can turn on closed captions and set TH-cam to automatically translate it to English. I'll bet the RAM could be replaced too. I replaced the RAM in a different laptop that had to be soldered and it worked no problem with double the original RAM.
Dude! Thanks for the video. I have the Go in the 256 GB flavor but I want to go all out. I have seen a few of these with he deck off on TH-cam but nothing as detailed as your video. Has helped me greatly! Also, I had no idea that the 64 GB version was upgradable. I thought that it was soldered to the board. My mother has the 64 GB version and now I know that I can indeed help her as well.
Glad I could help! I'm no expert, so figured I'd share the video for people like me who are figuring it out as they go. The upgraded storage makes a huge difference in day to day use. I saw a few websites that claimed the 64GB model was soldered, but I wanted to see for myself, and thankfully it wasn't!
Hi! So I just did this with my surface go laptop and now when I restarted it it’s saying “couldn’t find a bootable operating system” do you know why this may be?
@innoiso Installed the 512gb ssd. It was only $83 on ebay. The keyboard, and the sad cover were a bit difficult to remove. I was also very careful not to tear the bottom rubber strips, but I tore the thinner one. SSD benchmarks are also much higher than the stock 128gb drive. Thank you again!
Hi. Thanks for reviews. As I see you know about that maybe you can give me answer. I have s Surface Go 3 pentium Gold 8/128gb. I know ram and memory are soldered. Is it possible to unsold ram and memory and put a bigger one? What a about the chip to change for a good i3 or i5? Thanks for your answer and greetings from Spain
I just picked up a chuwi larkbox pro with 128gb emmc storage and support for m.2 2242 sata iii ssd storage. Am i going to notice a significant difference moving from the emmc to m.2 sata iii ssd storage setup under normal mostly shell navigation and browser usage activities? I read somewhere that emmc is just as fast for small reads/writes as m.2 ssd but it falls way behind when it comes to large file reads/writes is that true? Would that explain the windows 10 feature update install and post update disk cleanup processes i executed on that device appeared to take a long time?
Thanks a lot for that. I'll get my wife happy to extend her 64Gb Surface Go 1 Laptop. On Ram nothing can be done as I see right? Other question, for SO I must format all os copying all SSD on new one it's enought?
Great Video.. Love your detailed description. Thanks for the nice afford. Just wondering if i install a new NVME drive. how do i get the product key on a new install?
You can either clone your device beforehand, or if you log into the same Microsoft account on both devices, it should automatically recognize your product key is associated with the motherboard.
That would be a huge endeavor. If I was more talented with electrical engineering I would try it. Theres probably very little space, and powering the LEDs would be difficult. I like the idea though
Pretty sure I've found more than 1 video but I've looked at so much SLGo in the last few weeks, I may have imagined it. You really need to use a heat mat/ pad or similar to warm things up. That way the feet will come off easier.
I was only able to find one video with a teardown of the 8GB / 128GB model, but yeah I didn't think of a heatpad. In previous teardowns / repairs I've done I've just peeled off the rubber feet, but they haven't been this long. I usually don't break out the heat until it's really needed
@@innoiso Also, would probably help the plastic clips to flex rather than break. Anyway, I'm sure that when I try it, I'll break something too. Need to rebuild my old XPS first, that'll be a whole lot easier.
I got it to work, but now I get a new problem. What does it mean if my fps starts really good and fast, then the fan starts to accelerate to a point, at that point my gps goes to 2. What do I do? Thanks.
Many years ago I took apart an HP/Compaq TC4400 and ended up wrecking it by breaking a tiny cable connector latch. That was the biggest bummer in all of history. Guys, if anyone do that. Change even the thermal paste. Because they get dry very fast, especially when no one is using it, like in shop or in warehouse
One question, before you upgrade the ssd, do you need to copy the older drive into new ssd? And how to do that? Can you just put blank ssd into the laptop? Than where is window stored?
Hey sorry I meant to respond to this quicker. You can either image your SSD before you make the switch (I use Macrium Reflect which has a free trial) Or you can install windows by making an USB boot drive
Charging that much for half aluminium body with bottom barrel specs, that is designed to use a destructive method of disassembling the laptop. That should be illegal.
If you preinstall Windows before booting the Go, the most important driver that you need is the Wifi driver. If you don't have it, you'll have to plug your laptop into Ethernet to connect to the internet and start downloading all of the drivers.
Literally yesterday I bought another small form laptop, because I didn't find this video until today (well, TH-cam recommended it to me today). I need a small form laptop, and the Surface would have been great, but with the old-ish CPU, and just 8 GB RAM, and 64GB eMMc storage...I was afraid it would be too slow for what I'd use it. Had I known the storage is upgradable, I think this is what I would have bought. Can any of you guys tell me if the RAM can be upgraded? Thank you very much!
I tried to hold the laptop up to the camera but it was tough to see the cable. That's why I said you need to life the keyboard off slowly and disconnect the ribbon cable
@@innoiso it the detail on how to remove the cable, needs to use a plastic pry tool to lift the latch up, then remove the cable, same as the power cable. I would also mention after reinstall the OS, download and install the Suface Laptop Go driver pack from Microsoft.
You can use your finger nail to lift the latch, but yes I didn't detail that. And you don't have to install the driver pack if you make a disk image to start, but yes that is a solution. I tried to make it clear that this is not a complete guide and the description has the official Microsoft guide
I saw no obvious way to remove the metal frame, which seemed like part of the motherboard. Even if you could do so, there is no place to screw in the retention screw.
So, the 256gb eemc is still significantly slower than the 256gb ssd? Because I just bought the 128gb but thinking of upgrading to the 256gb since there’s just a $150 difference in price between the two laptops.

@innoiso, Thanks for the video! I found another video from Microsoft Surface Japan which also shows how to upgrade the SSD: th-cam.com/video/I44OXFvcNQQ/w-d-xo.html
It is in Japanese, but you can turn on closed captions and set TH-cam to automatically translate it to English.
By the way, I think your video may actually be more helpful to people as you demonstrate common mistakes that the Microsoft experts don't even mention.
Tnx for showing us how to not miss up the rubber! I may upgrade my go2
thanks to your video, it made me buy a SGL.. your video is a huge help for decision making.. btw, can you put down exactly what ssd you bought to use as replacement? will try to find one.. thank you and Merry Christmas!
I have the model I bought linked in the description, hope you love it!
Merry Christmas!
I'll bet the RAM could be replaced too. I replaced the RAM in a different laptop that had to be soldered and it worked no problem with double the original RAM.
Would love to see it; that's just a bit out of my wheelhouse
I want to upgrade to 256gig storage. Can you help me which ssd could be used for 64gb ver. mSATA or nvme gen3x4
This guy is so down to earth and professional
Thank you!
Hi! So I just did this with my surface go laptop and now when I restarted it it’s saying “couldn’t find a bootable operating system” do you know why this may be?
I just purchased this laptop. Found a 512gb ssd on ebay that will fit in here. Thank you for this guide!
Besf of luck! Be sure to check Microsoft's official guide linked in the description as well!
@@photolabguy great job! Glad to hear the project was a success!
can you provide the link to the 512gb ssd you found pls
@@kofibonsu8466 it's still $83 on ebay. Let us know how it goes!
Thank you! but we need your help about this on Toshiba Satellite CL15-C1310 Laptop 11.6" Celeron 2GB RAM 32GB eMMC
What about the normal surface go tablet
It’s unfortunately not user-upgradable
@@innoiso do external GPUs / CPUs work (if that exists)?
Those are some real ninja moves man! :) Great work!
Hah thank you, I think a ninja wouldn't have lost his tools though!
@@innoiso lol!
Thanks a lot for that. I'll get my wife happy to extend her 64Gb Surface Go 1 Laptop. On Ram nothing can be done as I see right? Other question, for SO I must format all os copying all SSD on new one it's enought?
Nothing can be done about RAM, but upgrading the SSD has a positive impact on performance because the pagefile will be faster
@@innoiso Thanks for your answer. Greetings from Spain.
Can you link the materials used here? I just bought a second hand SLG 1 in 128GB but wanna go 512GB
@@innoiso ok. Yah I have done that before with custom PC’s. I just figured these devices have one OEM key. Thanks allot
Great video. Is that black laptop you have in the video another Surface Laptop Go with a skin on it? I can't quite tell.
Thank you! No it's the black model of the Surface Laptop 3!
Do you think it's possible to add lighting to the keyboard ? maybe a few light strips between the surface and the keyboard inner deck?
That would be a huge endeavor. If I was more talented with electrical engineering I would try it. Theres probably very little space, and powering the LEDs would be difficult. I like the idea though
@@innoiso Aw, that's a bummer! I'm loving mine but my only complain is the lack of a keyboard light :/
@@ulissesjunior5280 It is frustrating at night for sure
Clear glow in the dark keyboard cover maybe?
You might be right. Thankfully, there arent any seams around mine A couple weeks later despite those few plastic clips breaking
for the rubber feet removal, should i use a hair dryer to loosen up the adhesive abit?
It might help, your best bet once you get underneath is to slide a tool underneath the rubber, flush against the Surface, rather than pulling on it
I got it to work, but now I get a new problem. What does it mean if my fps starts really good and fast, then the fan starts to accelerate to a point, at that point my gps goes to 2. What do I do? Thanks.
Hi!
Can the ram be upgraded too ?
Sir can you give a links to buy that ssd in India
After install the ssd , will i reinstall windows, if yes then how we will reinstall and what is process, can you please make a video
is there any extra ram slot where I can solder another ram by any chance?
Unfortunately no
Many years ago I took apart an HP/Compaq TC4400 and ended up wrecking it by breaking a tiny cable connector latch. That was the biggest bummer in all of history. Other than that I have had good success upgrading laptops. This one looks like a nailbiter. I just got a Surface Laptop Go with 64gb emmc. Should I upgrade? I am hesitant....
Take it slow, watch a couple videos, and read the manual. Understand the concern. If it's still too nerve wracking, don't force yourself
@@innoiso I succeeded in putting a 256gb SSD in there. I tore one of the rubber strips and broke 1 little plastic clip, but that's okay. The thing I was most worried about was the little cable latch but I didn't break it either. Thanks a lot for the video. I couldn't use the laptop with its original 64gb of storage; the OneDrive cloud storage just wasn't working for me. Now with 256gb I can use it.
Great job! Glad I could help! Hope you love the upgrade!
well done. thank you for the video.
Thank you!
will be showing this to my friend who runs a electronic store and asking for this procedure to be done on my which im typing on now. Innolso can i also upgrade my ram for this machine?
Thank you! A professional should be able to do it even better. Unfortunately the RAM is not upgradeable as it is soldered to the motherboard.
Hairdryer would make all the rubber or adhesive easy to remove.
Great video it is so detailed on the hardware side.. I wish I could see you struggle bringing up the new ssd.. ! I've followed your video for upgrading mine.. but my laptop go won't recognize the new disk (I wanted to format it through diskpart during installation program, but it never came up on the list disk) now nor the old ssd will show up again... what could I've done wrong?.. pls help!
Can it be recognized in BIOS?
@@innoiso It shows a small icon on the upper right hand showing kind of an SSD with an "X" mark in the center.. that is the only reference I can find to a Drive on the BIOS..
Can you access the disk with another computer? See if you can get it wiped from scratch in the correct format
@@innoiso update: I booted with external HDD with Windows installed, I ran diskpart on cmd and disk management over that disk (internal SSD) on the computer and did not showed either.
I have bought a SSD enclosure to test the SSD itself on another computer.
I also downloaded image for the surface from Microsoft platform. Tried to do a system restore with wiping data and it stops at the beginning saying there was a problem trying to restore. :(
@@innoiso Quick update.. I have tested both SSD on an external SSD case, they both worked plugging them on other computer.. I also tryied wiping data tool from microsoft surface resources, It did not recognized any disk connected to the system.. I think I'm ruined.. I am thinking sending it to warranty.. but I´m not sure what I´m going to get from them.. the device still on warranty, but providing that I opened it and changed SSD.. I´m not sure if they will be open to fix...
Seems like this will be my holiday project
Best of luck!
Did replace the hard drive to 256. Went smoothly for the most part. Now i cant get the trackpad and keyboard to work. I dont see any damage done to ribbon cable. Only power button works and fn button lights but caps lock does not. Did firmware, driver updates and did multiple restore and no lock
Any idea ??
If you swap back in the old drive, does the keyboard come back? That might help you figure out whether its a hardware issue or not
@@innoiso unfortunately it does not
Guys, if anyone do that. Change even the thermal paste. Because they get dry very fast, especially when no one is using it, like in shop or in warehouse
I am going in very shallow, or so she said. But seriously what about 4gb of ram?
One question, before you upgrade the ssd, do you need to copy the older drive into new ssd? And how to do that?
Can you just put blank ssd into the laptop? Than where is window stored?
Hey sorry I meant to respond to this quicker.
You can either image your SSD before you make the switch (I use Macrium Reflect which has a free trial)
Or you can install windows by making an USB boot drive
Does this upgrade the ram or do you have a video for that as well
Its not possible unfortunately
Charging that much for half aluminium body with bottom barrel specs, that is designed to use a destructive method of disassembling the laptop.
That should be illegal.
Will it install the drivers/Windows 11 automatically if I pre-install the NVMe before booting the Go for the first time?
If you preinstall Windows before booting the Go, the most important driver that you need is the Wifi driver. If you don't have it, you'll have to plug your laptop into Ethernet to connect to the internet and start downloading all of the drivers.
@@innoiso Thanks! Where can I D/L the driver?
Can we also upgrade RAM?
Literally yesterday I bought another small form laptop, because I didn't find this video until today (well, TH-cam recommended it to me today).
I need a small form laptop, and the Surface would have been great, but with the old-ish CPU, and just 8 GB RAM, and 64GB eMMc storage...I was afraid it would be too slow for what I'd use it.
Had I known the storage is upgradable, I think this is what I would have bought.
Can any of you guys tell me if the RAM can be upgraded?
Thank you very much!
Unfortunately the RAM isn't upgradeable. My system still performs alright with 4GB and the upgraded SSD, but I'm doing lighter work on it
Ok im.good at swapping in the new drive but di I need to format the new SSD card?
You need to either clone your system to it beforehand, or do a fresh install of Windows after you drop it in using a USB copy of Windows
following your video, your steps missed the part on how to disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable.
The SSD is not recognized after putting it in. Any idea on what I can do to get it to show up?
Can you look for it in bios?
Hi, I have a 128GB Microsoft Surface Go and I want to put a 512GB. Is it compatible?
I will take it as a guide
Hi , do you think Laptop Go accept full size SSD ? I can see a guard can be remove ...
I saw no obvious way to remove the metal frame, which seemed like part of the motherboard. Even if you could do so, there is no place to screw in the retention screw.
@@innoiso how long is it lasts? Heard 10-13 hours ... Is that true ?
If you can link where yo get the upgrade RAM and storage
RAM is now upgradable, but there's a link to the storage in the description
I wanted to see if you can change the RAM....?
You unfortunately can not
Does your recommendation of 512gb model work with this 64gb surface laptop go?
Yes!
Upgrayden memory ram ? How is it done ?
Not possible unfortunately
So, the 256gb eemc is still significantly slower than the 256gb ssd? Because I just bought the 128gb but thinking of upgrading to the 256gb since there’s just a $150 difference in price between the two laptops.
The 256GB model is not EEMC, it's an SSD just like the 128GB. I haven't tested it, but I'm guessing a third party SSD would be faster
@@innoiso got ya, great! I’ll be moving forward and head to the store right now to upgrade to the 256gb ssd. Thanks for the info.
😎👍🏼
What about the ram? Can I upgrade it??
Unfortunately no you can't
Dumb question, did you need to reinstall the OS?
You do
i also have 4gb model... the best results i got was with linux debian gnome edition, and works great
Nice!!

thank you dude, this was a great resource.
