  • We must entirely rethink the way we provide energy, and change our mindset from energy as a commodity to energy as a service. And we can do this in one generation, both lowering emissions and elevating quantity and quality of service if we think innovatively. This is even more critical as we address challenges implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris agreement on Climate Change. Rethinking Energy is a talk for everyone who cares about climate change, and the ways to balance the needs of the developing and developed world regarding energy.
Scott Foster, an engineer and innovative thinker on energy is Director of the Sustainable Energy Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). He has led numerous strategy engagements on the question of climate change - how to change portfolios of policy, investment and behavior in light of the science and politics of climate change.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The #1 question being asked is "what can we do?". As said in this talk, it is up to regulators and policy-makers to catalyze these changes. We need to engage not only with them directly, but also with those who influence their thinking (e.g., academia, industry, and NGOs). Come talk to us at UNECE.

I would like to reply to Mr. Volkov's comment. All consumers could invest to improve energy efficiency, but so far they are not doing so. Either money is limited, or they do not appreciate the opportunity, or they do not have technical competence. If a company starts to sell heating, cooling, lighting, and other energy services, they can only make money by investing in EE to increase the margin between revenues from customers and their costs of delivering the services. The analogy with the changes in telecoms works well.

In nature, organisms that have energy survive, use it efficiently and share energy with organisms with which they live in symbiosis. Energy is at the base of all the phenomena and processes that occur in the universe. That is why Petro, the Venezuelan currency, is supported in energy and denominated in energy units.
