Because it's the best. Plus it captures the sense of positivity that happened during Italia '90. If I remember correctly, England got off to a poor start, Gazza and Mark Wright came into the side, we switched to a 352 and nearly won the world cup. Almost miraculous.

Fin Harrison First of all, good wishes for England team for World cup 2018. Although I'm not English or even British and was born in 1990 but I think you are right..the team I saw in the late 90's was ok but the one after 2000 (apart from Gerrard and to some extent Lampard) was terrible and was all about looks and brands. Beckham and Rooney were the reasons I stopped rooting for England. But I think the 2018 team especially Harry kane seems good. Hopefully we won't have to see any hair style related articles about them anymore. Best of luck again. :)

Jim Tim We did incredibly well last year but you are right about the changing of looks and it's being conditioned into our society. It was so much more laid back in the 90s and everyone just enjoyed it, now everything is more about image and money and how the players and their girlfriends look. You compare the teams back at this time to the ones now and it's a big difference.

I'm not shitting on 3 Lions and that song is much more suited for the stadium, but this, this is in an entirely different league. New Order took a risk with this song. They had a lot to lose given their popularity and reputation at the time as well as writing a song that didn't exactly fit with the rest of the discography. It could have been that really embarrassing song that could have ended them. But the final result was truly a gem and rightly so.

34 years on it's now retrospectively widely remembered and regarded as the poorest World Cup of all time - and yet, I couldn't ever hate Italia 90... So many iconic moments and so many memories / so much nostalgia. I was 10, so was far too young to remember 1982 and only have very vague memories of Mexico 86, but this song, and, BBC's Nessun Dorma and ITV's Tutti Al Mondo were all absolutely brilliant that World Cup. Remember the Panini Sticker albums, Coca-Cola balls, T-shirts with the mascot Ciao on, long hot summer days, being allowed to stay up late to watch the matches... And, having never had much of a relationship with my dad for the first ten years of my life (as my younger sister was his favourite), I have very fond memories of this particular World Cup from suddenly spending lots of time with him and - possibly like many other young boys in that era - bonding with my dad through football... Now I'm 44, and my dad is no longer with us (he passed away six years ago aged 67), but I now have a 12-year-old son of my own, and we have an absolute blast watching the football together every weekend... Some memories are just priceless! "Love's got the World In Motion" - powerful words! Football is, indeed, truly the world's game! ⚽️

This track has held up really well. It's got all the joy of the start of the rave era in the UK in it, and all the '90s synths. Un-ironic and unselfconscious compared to now, and not worried about talking about "love" , like The Charlatans and Primal Scream's Screamadelica, and all that I remember so well from that baggy year too.

My son was born 5 weeks early this April, so we were in the hospital for a couple of weeks whilst he was gaining weight and growing. I played this song every day, especially those 3am feeds! I still play it to him now he's three months old. He loves the John Barnes rap 😀
I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter when they released this, I bl**dy love it, it was such an exciting time on so many levels. When my contractions started, I said to my (ex) husband "Oh, I think it's started ..." and he replied "No it hasn't, kick off is in 10 minutes ..." and my little one was born 5 weeks early on 21 June 1990 just before the England vs Egypt match.

This has got be the best Englands song ever.
Brings back some great memories. The hot, sweltering summer of 1990, Italia 90, the skills of Gascoigne, Lineker, Platt et al, and England's narrow/unlucky defeat in The World Cup semis. Also some great music, including this particular number, which spent two weeks at no. 1 in the charts. If only I had access to a time machine, I'd go back to the summer of 1990 right now!

As an Irishman, when Im at the pub with my mates and England play, Im cheering with everybody for the team England is playing. At home, I have a little sneaky cheer for you lot. I remember being an impressionable young lad about 14 when this came out and in awe of the England team and the unbelievable music that was sweeping the charts, this banger included. Thank you for the game you have given the world and the passion in which you do. Oh and Manchester United, Peace!
