I was hoping to see more pictures or demonstration. How should you position a shoulder strap? How high/low should a bag rest against the body?

I carry an iphone and a note 4. The note 4 is great for all those docs because you can put a 128gb memory card in it. 32gb basic plus 128 and boom, your entire library + music +video + pictures +anything you can think of with you in your pocket. I don't put a sim in my note 4 so no charges there. :) Could be useful for the avid media consumer. Carry a netbook if you need to do presentations or worksheets. Down size down size down size.
I used to carry a 1L water bottle. But after buying a leather brief case from Santa Barbara and the Polo Racquet brand (yeah it's an unknown brand but their leather goods are cheap), which doesn't fit your standard round objects, I was forced to go small. Pocket sized deodorant, traveler's toothbrush.
My big tissue becomes a pocket sized. The usual 80 pull wet wipes I had become a 10 sheet pull wet wipe. And so on and so forth. I even downsized my desk-sized moleskine-like journal to an a5 one and couldn't be happier. I ditched my filofax and my iphone now serves as my organizer. So find a way to down size and if you can combine tasks into one item (like calendar plus camera in a phone) or (magazines, videos, etc. in android device) then go for it. I am now hunting a cup-sized water bottle to fit in this tiny tiny brief case. :) The voss bottle fits well in it. But I also see some from Lock and Lock that might work superbly. :)
If all else fails, invest in a locker near your work desk (I tried a locker at school but didn't work out for me. My classmate has one and saved her from lugging her books around.) It does not have to be office supplied. You can buy one yourself (those locked trunks will do nicely.) and store your items there.

I am a working pianist here and I do carry briefcases. I love the bigger and huge briefcase because you can fit more stuff in them especially if you are a commuter like myself where you don’t go to an office from 9-5. Work has me all over. I carry documents in paper as well as a ton of other things to keep with me that are related to work. I have many different briefcases and commuter backpacks which are totally different than your school backpack. These packs are made for commuting and work. The briefcases are nice because I have to say as a working business owner myself it portrays what I do and it really sticks out in the work category. I always tell people. If I am going to look my best for work, tan as a commuting work guy I need to bee serious with my daily commutes as well, which means carrying a briefcase really makes you look great. So I have many different types of briefcases with me and one is a hybrid that can turn from a briefcase, to huge messenger bag, to a big backpack. It is a 3 in one. I love the big briefcases because you can put snacks and everything in them and still have room. Great for commuting. I carry my documents in paper giant coffee mug that is stainless steal, and a stainless steal water bottle. I am use to the heavy Cary because playing the piano really does get your muscles worked up for that. So carrying a heavy briefcase is not a big deal for me. I carry my briefcases with pride and I am sure looking good as I head down the stairs of the bus making y connections to where i need to go. I don’t know how many times people have commented on how I look even at work. It shows your status as a working guy and people take you like you mean business. Being a business owner you have to bee that way. All my banking and tax documents are in my briefcases so they are safe their and nobody will get into them. If I need something in the briefcase that i am taking that day or my commuter backpacks the docs are already their.

What is your take on messenger bags? I'm almost done with my schooling and will be going on an intern soon. I was thinking of getting a messenger bag to replace my backpack. At this current time the things I carry on a daily bases are my Ipad with headphones, water, two folders, notepad, and a pencil case for extra writing utensils.

This also a problem I have. I personally carry a laptop + charger, A book, Paper document and Water bottle to university everday. Yeah damn super heavy, is it a good idea to carry a holdall instead?

@teskeiexpress Even better... ditch the iPad... it's just an oversized iPhone.
I carry my Android phone with me always, and it meets most of my needs. When I need more, I carry a laptop. The laptop serves 99% of my needs, in combination with smartphone tethering for mobile internet. That other 1% is when I carry a small book or something. Everything is digital these days, or can be made digital, and you should take advantage of that.
If you MUST physically carry that much, go for the wheel bag.

7" tablet fits into a jacket pocket. It can keep a lot of pdfs for all those reference documents.
And if you need something to fill in regularly? Why not write an app?
I usually use a backpack, and it includes lunch and gym clothes, and water for the gym, towel, etc.
In winter, when I wear my trenchcoat, I use a messenger bag, and don't go to the gym. The locker is just too small for all my clothing, and the bag.
