  • What is toxic positivity, and why exactly is the "good vibes only" mantra harmful to your health?
    Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. This can be incredibly harmful, because it creates a pattern of denial of any negative emotions -- and bottling up these feelings can cause memory issues, anxiety, depression, high stress.
    In this week's episode of How 2 Deal, we're breaking down toxic positivity and sharing exactly why negative experiences are important to growth.

    Basically this seems to be saying, it’s okay to cry and feel sad, or have other emotions other than smiley face all the time. That’s life. Joy is different than being in a constant state of happiness.

      This isn’t about someone hiding their feelings. It’s about when you share your feelings, the response is toxic positivity. Like, you can never be real with a certain friend because the response you get from when you open up is not what you need to hear.

    Thank you guys so much for putting this up. I was having issues at work. Due to Covid and some people passing as a result. And toxic positive people told me that stress shouldn’t happen and I need to be grateful. I distanced myself from those people, saw my therapist and validated my feelings.

      @@MisSamIvee Fair enough to keep your therapy private. The therapy does depend on the goals you set for your life and that is indeed personal. One of the ways to measure your growth is how your family and friends respond to you differently and that there are better interpersonal relationships with them. If this does not happen you may want to consider a different therapy strategy.

    I'm right there with you. I've found the more positive I try to be at night, the more nightmares I end up having! Sometimes you need to get all the negative stuff out in the open in order to purge it. I had a friend who was obsessed with force positivity, and ironically she became quite the toxic person, scolding people for bringing her precious vibe down.

      What do you consider negative could actually be positive and visa versa, but I rather spend time with a positive person rather than someone who is constantly complaining about the world and everything in it.

      My sister is like that, any sign that you are feeling down, and she is on you like a fly to shit, telling you to brighten up and be like her, with her positive fake smiles, god she makes me sick. i guess people like this are insecure with facing REAL life.

    • @mauriceharting5877
      @mauriceharting5877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@halloweenville1 Why are you feeling down is the question to be addressed is it not? That your sister is positive or desiring to be positive is not a bad thing. And what do you consider real life? Is being critical of others and being negative a constructive thing for you to engage in?

    • @halloweenville1
      @halloweenville1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mauriceharting5877 You are missing the entire point, people need to feel ALL emotions, and anyone who tries to repress them with ONLY positivity, can be insensitive to others feelings.
      Obviously we all need to look on the bright side, but we don't need toxic positivity telling us to snap out of it every 5 seconds.
      If someone doesn't allow you to grieve over losing a pet for instance, they are forbidding you a healing process. which isn't positive at all.
      This video is about TOXIC positivity, not general words of wisdom.
      Feeling down is not a crime against positivity, and there lies the problem with these people who are obsessed with it, they think having a negative thought is wrong, it is a NATURAL emotion.

      @@mauriceharting5877 But sometimes showing strength makes you worse down the road.
      I mean after all suppressing any emotion negative or positive is not good for anyone.
      Negative emotions exist for a reason and so to does positive emotions.
      As such the key is to not feel joy or negatively all the time.
      What would be the better approach is to not deny your feelings and to feel emotions that match the situation.
      From this point on a balance is needed which can not be done if you feel one singular emotion.

    • @mauriceharting5877
      @mauriceharting5877 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Raiden-the-Goat32 I don't believe anyone is only showing positive or negative emotions in life for we are human, however gravitating towards positive emotions is always better than negative emotions and you will have more friends!
      It is better to see the glass half full than half empty, even though volume wise there is no difference. Having positive emotions come from positive thinking, which are matters of the heart and mind that cannot be measured in a glass.
      I don't think it is wise to strive for a balance between positive and negative emotions at all! We all need to strive to be more positive and less negative for negative emotions tend to come easier. Being critical and angry seems a lot easier than being encouraging and with joy. And who wants to be critical and angry ... these are formed in thoughts, words, and deeds and tend to push people away.
      You do a little experiment with your friends by trying to be encouraging with and towards them one day and angry and resentful with them the next day and compare the outcome ... see if I make sense. Agreed?
