Horizon locking has been something that Insta360 has been doing for a while now. To me this is a supped up Insta360 Go 2 just with a larger footprint.

Exactly. Not sure why Jordan said no one else can do that. Insta’s been doing if for years. Also, i’d rather grab their One RS camera which is basically same price as this but with more features and modules available. Does horizon lock too and has one inch sensor

@@johnbunani1341 insta360 doesn't have 10 bit yet, pros will care about that. Both DJI and Gopro have announced it today. And I think insta360 will do it at some point, because they listen to consumers a lot more than DJI and Gopro.

      @@xWood4000,
Yeah devil is in the details. I have all 3 brands and definitely comparing Go2 is a dis-service and/or means user never used these tools as a user/power user.
10-bit is bit depth so yeah no more banding in skies. But DR (dynamic range) is better on GP11 that A3 is struggling with so hope they can improve that.
Now I don’t know who came up with horizon lock first but Go2 released date was Mar’21 and GP9 was in Sept’20 with the Max Mod horizon lock so I don’t know who copied who.
Anyhow with GP11 has horizon lock n almost all shooting modes except slomo and only with the Linear digital lens while DJI and Insta is limited to I believe 2.7K or 4K30 for the A2 and One R 4K and 1” mods. What GP did copy is allow you to reframe the digital lenses after filming.
The 8:7 framing allows a lot of FOV changes without losing quality.
I guess to each of it’s own.
I would rank for DR, 10-bit, reusing accessories, higher resolution and more shooting modes a win for GP11. Add their replacement and cloud service as a bonus.
Then for magnetic design, UI/UX, colors, and bright, responsive, glitch-free touchscreens to DJI. Add their no hassle free refesh care program for replacements as a bonus as well (at least from mu experience).
For software features and editing on mobile app, lots of modular options, small form factor, and 360 hands down to Insta360. The after sale service has been horrific and what turns me off here as when you have a problem, communicating in English is hard, then time to send in, and time to get back, a new product has launched and you buy it and moved on (again, from a user since 2018 with the 1X) until GO2, One R 1”, and RS 360 1”.

Just a note for those wondering about all the features of the HERO11 (and in most cases the 10 & 9), with Labs firmware your camera can do (and you can do to it) much more than it’s advertised on the box and what’s in the user manual.
Most importantly, it’s actually very easy to use, especially with the QRControl mobile app (Android & iOS).
With Labs firmware installed you not only get all the goodness of the latest general release firmware, you also get:
    200 Mbps recording
    Motion detection recording
    Speed detection recording
    Audio decibel (noise) detection recording
    Global tone mapping On/Off
    Local tone mapping On/Off
    Global and Local tone mapping
    Max shutter angle control
    Exposure damping control
Extra long (days) time lapse on one battery
    GPS time synchronization
    USB power trigger
    Burn in overlays
    Custom file naming
    12GB file length chaptering
    GPS synced Sunrise/Sunset recording
    Time code support via LTC
Auto generated Adobe style proxy files
    On screen histogram
    Burn in lap times
    Luma sweep
    Embed personal logo into video
Control length of Hindsight timeout (instead of default 15 minutes)
    Increase digital gain of audio
    Clean monitoring without overlays
Mute one or more channels of audio
True 24.0 (Cinema) frame rate (instead of broadcast 23.976)
Increased write frequency for higher precion file recoveries
Alternative exposure controls ........ and more.

    • @JudoSurfer
      @JudoSurfer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@rfunk8198 With Hypersmooth stabilization, yes, set the max shutter angle to prevent the shutter from dropping below 1/120 (1/240+ is best, but can be too dark). You can also increase the bitrate to 200 Mbps and turn on/off local and global tone mapping. Higher bitrate will capture more information and with both global and local tone mapoing on, you get more detail in shadow, but can get more noise.
In 4K/30fps the camera has 3DR noise reduction (not available in higher resolutions), which also helps.

Thanks for the review! I've been using the previous Hero 9 and 10 to film family holiday videos over the past couple of years. I love the fact you don't need to worry about the weather or stabilisation as both are fine, and in good light the quality looks decent, albeit a bit over-sharpened. Horrible in low light, so just avoid it. It's also great to take it underwater - I was snorkelling with it, and even shallow scuba was ok without a housing. I find them incredibly flexible cameras to take on family trips as you just don't need to worry about them. PS - the old Hero 9 could do the horizon lock trick if you had the Max Lens Mod fitted.

Wait a min. . .the question is with Gopro 9 we were introduced to horizon lock with the lens mod. . . is Gopro 11 capable of horizon lock WITHOUT the lens mod? That saves us $75 for the accessory. I skipped purchasing gopro 10 for the 11 looking for more features. 10 didn't seem like much of a progress leap from my 9 to make the purchase. And looking at the specs for 11, hopefully Gopro 12 will have 6k @ 120 fps or higher capability. I love seeing my chihuahuas running in slow motion [in higher res. is the goal]. For photos one point not mentioned is voice command, "GoPro take a photo" or "GoPro start record" for video, and using the GoPro remote is very handy. Toggle between video, photo or hyperlapse modes quickly with the remote. Yea these add ons cost $ but provide huge versatility for Vlogging, mounting on a grip stick or gimbal. As shown in your review GoPro is not really designed to be used as a hand held pocket camera.

I'm still soured on GoPro after my Hero 8 Black kept freezing up randomly regardless of where I formatted the card nor the cards used. Then I bought the Hero 10 in hopes that the GP2 processor would fare a lot better for vehicle footage only to be met with a failed sensor which now spits out purple blotches before corrupting the file and shutting off, again regardless of where the cards were formatted or the cards used. My DJI Osmo Action and DJI Action 2 have proven very reliable and capable in both low light and high summer temps and I look forward to trying out the DJI Osmo Action 3.

The one thing I've found useful with GoPro's (as it relates to photography) is doing video while I'm shooting, because in some instances, I can mount the Go-Pro into an adapter on the hot-shoe of the camera and almost give a POV video of close to what I'm seeing, and sometimes I like to use it as I do photography hikes. I have my regular camera to get stills, and the GoPro sort of records everything else on the hike. Sometimes I'll take video with both (but the video with the actual regular camera will be more focused on something specific -- whereas the GoPro will be still more for overall footage). So yes I think they can be useful for regular stills photographers, and especially for those shooting video as they have gotten quite good you could use them for BTS shooting, and considering the cost, you can buy a few of these for the price of even a modern APS-C ML camera.
That being said, I'm still using my Hero 8 black and have no real intentions of upgrading. The 4k30 from the Hero 8 is plenty for what I do, and while the newer ones may offer better stabilization (the Hero 8 isn't bad by any means) I personally just can't justify the upgrade. IF I was doing vlogging or making money with my videos, then that would be different, but much of my videos and photography is for personal use and not really ever sold. But I do like the idea of being able to record a video of things while I'm shooting, especially if I'm hiking because I can just turn my head and look at things and capture it with the camera (as i use a headmount a lot when doing hiking with the GoPro).

You wanted to show if it was worth using next to pro camera quality and did in the first 10 seconds. Gopro looks like actioncam over sharp, super digital or basically a phone video now. They should just promote it as the tik tok camera but then why would you need 4k at all? What's the dynamic range, 3 stops? Out of the kindness of their hearts they will let you upload to their servers and make a highlight video for you? Then what happens to your footage?

  • @JonInLondon
    @JonInLondon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Issues I may have with the 11 Black:
    * TH-cam seem to have stopped supporting 5k video since early July - surely a big problem (certainly is for me and my Hero 9 Black), upload a 5k video and the highest resolution you get is 4k (I do still have my older 5k videos).
    * I really like the Linear+Levelling "Lens" mode on my 9, as it has a lot less ultra-wide distortion, is there an equivalent here? (Meaning the linear part, I get the levelling is even better.)
    * Hypersmooth often falls off a cliff with a 180 degree shutter (see below) - any better?
    Where I am:
I have a Hero 9 Black, it's really good and I do most of my videos with it now (previously a GH5 with a Dual-IS2 lens or a RX100V on a Crane-M gimbal - both before and now with some iPhone stuff too, sometimes with Filmic Pro but more with the built-in app as I'm usually doing it when I need to be videoing immediately).
Why I got a 9B as my first GoPro:
    * Good battery life (the 10 seems a lot less so, didn't upgrade)
    * Fixed all the really poor things from earlier models
    * Really good 5k footage
    * Great stabilisation
    * Really light to hand-hold for long periods
    * I felt there was so much high-shutter-speed phone footage out there people would probably be okay with the same from the GoPro (see below re Hypersmooth)
    But:
**** TH-cam have stopped supporting 5k video since early July (-ish) so lose the 5k advantage of 1.78x the pixels vs. 4k
    * I asked them to add a profile between Flat and Saturated/Contrasty and suggested calling it "Natural". They did this (no idea if it had anything to do with me) but didn't put it in the 9 (VERY annoyingly).
    * Shooting stills is a very slow business and really not worth it most of the time (do a frame-grab from 5k) - that's just from pressing the shutter button until it's done, not including choosing the settings!
    * High ISO is really quite noisy
    * Hypersmooth only works with fast shutter speeds (I assume also on the 10 and 11), so don't want to limit the ISO to lower values to avoid the noise as then the stabilisation will fall off a cliff when it gets dark
    * Hypersmooth really doesn't like being pointed downwards (e.g. to include a document in the video)
    Notes
    * If you use Resolve you'll need the Studio version to edit the content, not the free one (I already had it so not an issue)
    * It splits videos into just under 4GB segments (maybe to allow for people who aren't using exFAT as their card's file system? Should do in one file for exFAT IMHO). You'll need to join them pre-TH-cam (options - in their App, but needs a lot of phone free space; in an editor on a PC/Mac; or some other way).
    * As a quick approach you can use the command-line tool FFMPEG to concatenate files, first convert to .mkv format then join, then delete the mkv-s:
In the directory they are in make a file called files.txt containing one line per file you want to join, as:
    file '1.mkv'
    file '2.mkv'
    file '3.mkv'
    file '4.mkv'
Then convert the source files (in this example 4, replace GX*.MP4 with your filenames) as follows:
    ffmpeg -i GX010505.MP4 -c copy 1.mkv
    ffmpeg -i GX020505.MP4 -c copy 2.mkv
    ffmpeg -i GX030505.MP4 -c copy 3.mkv
    ffmpeg -i GX040505.MP4 -c copy 4.mkv
Which won't re-encode so will be pretty quick.
    Then run:
    ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.txt -c copy VideoOut.mkv
Then delete the 1-4.mkv etc. files.
Change VideoOut.mkv extension if you want another container format, e.g. VideoOut.mp4.
It's quicker to do than describe. You just need the FFMPEG executable, links available from ffmpeg.org/download.html#build-windows
You can put it in the same directory as the videos, but in Windows may need to write .\ffmpeg to run it, as many Windows setups won't look for programs in the current directory.
    * My preferred settings:
Res/FPS 5k/30, Lens Linear+HL, Hypersmooth On, Scheduled Capture Duration No Limit, HindSight Off, Timer Off, Zoom 1.0x
Bit Rate High, Shutter Auto, EV Comp 0, White Balance Auto, ISO Min 100, ISO Max 1600, Sharpness High, Color GoPro, Raw Audio Off, Wind Auto
Shortcuts - LL Lens, LR EV Comp, UL White Balance, UP HyperSmooth
Orientation locked (to avoid flip to portrait if point down and it gets confused
Front screen off (to save power) unless I'm in the shot, then 16:9
    Beep Volume Low
    QuikCapture Off
Default Preset - Last used Video
    Auto Power Off 5 min
    LEDs Front Off Only
    Anti-flicker 60Hz (see 30Hz note below)
    Video Compression HEVC
    Voice Control Off
Display orientation Landscape, Screen saver read 5 min, front same as rear, brightness 80%
Wireless connection On, Wireless band 5GHz (adjust to suit, but 5GHz is much faster)
    * Oh and I shoot 30p despite being in a PAL (25Hz) country as I think it makes for smoother Pans when viewed on screens which usually run at 60Hz, I would change to 25p if there were a lot of flickering lights around.
    * I don't use the optional (extra cost) ND filters to help the shutter speed be more cinematic as it will screw the HyperSmooth.
    * I do plan sometime to play with ReelSmart Motion Blur to see if that's 180 degree shutter emulation will look good, but have to find a Tutorial for Resolve as I'm too busy to read everything.
    * I haven't played with stabilisation in post (e.g. the paid option in the GoPro Player desktop app), as I like to know I have the shot. Also not sure I can run Windows Store Apps as my logon is a Workgroup one not my Microsoft one)
    * I may play with it on the gimbal, as it will help in some cases (such as walking on a slope), but only if I can combine it with hypersmooth

Love that the horizon lock on these goes up to the higher resolutions. For what its worth, you could get horizon lock to work on a GoPro 9 and 10 by just turning on the "max lens mod" mode without a max lens mod on. I feel like the max lens mod was a bit of a scam...

  • @CarstenSvendsen

My main concern is the bitrate. Is it high enough for lots of fish and stuff in the same frame? I've had issues with other cameras before where the quality is great with calm motion but too much going on and it's a blurry mess. Is it a locked bitrate, is it variable, does it cap at each resolution or unlimited? These are all questions that I can't find answers for.

I still use a Hero 8 and not that often but I can see times when I would use it more and the 11 looks like a better camera, especially to use with my GH6 for certain B roll POV shots as I have plans to use a GoPro in the future for certain shots. The motion looks a bit better as the one issue I have had with GoPros is that I shoot 25fps normally and on GoPros when shooting 25fps, motion can look a bit jerky when panning.

So is that the case with 11? I shoot mountain biking Pov, I need the trail to look as it looks in real life, I can't have distortion.

    Hello,
First of all thanks for your reviews !! There is a question I wonder about this new GoPro. There is (to me anyway) a major problems with all previous GoPros, when you take a photo it takes quite a while to really take it and another long time for the image to be recorded. I could not find if this has been fixed on GoPro 9 ou 10, so for now I keep my hero 8. But if that has been fixed... Thanks.

Nice job on the video! I often use the horizon lock with the max lens mod and Hero 9. It is useful. Maybe the 11 is going to be a bit higher quality and work better in lower light without the need of the add-on lens. Though I assume it's not as wide. Is there a max lens setting in the 11? I'm glad accessories and batteries appear to be compatible. I just picked up three of the Enduro batteries to replace my blue ones that were starting to puff up a bit. The price jump isn't great and they basically force buying it on their site to get a decent-ish deal.

Thanks DPReview... I stopped buying GoPro and switched to Insta360 after the Hero 10. I got tired of footage being corrupted and unusable. I would come home and find files just MISSING on the SD card after a shoot, and GoPro has SERIOUS issues with this. That coupled with the 1 inch Leica mod for the Insta360 and the fact that I can get far more versatility from it made me happy with the switch. GoPro has pros, like a larger retail presence in the real world, not needing to order accessories from China and Insta360 tends to have back order issues, but they released FOUR CAMERAS this year, all in different niche catagories.
GoPro is being crushed by the smartphone market, and instead of innovating they are releasing point updates to their current lineup, which won't last forever for them.
