Long story short: inheritance. The Netherlands were part of the HRE under the Habsburg rule. Kaiser Maximilaan von Habsburg's son, Charles the Fair married Queen Johanna of Spain (her parents had united Castille and Aragorn). But Charles died quite young. So Johanna reigned as queen over Spain. But Johanna was not sane. Johanna la Loca. So Maximiliaan locked his daugter in law up and acted as regent untill his grandson Philips II came of age. Philips inherited some parts of the HRE when Maximilaan passed, including the Netherlands. And so the Netherlands were Spailnish territory.
@@pickledbabushka5144 no, please learn your history. Most of the Low Country's (who were part of the HRE except Flanders which was part of France) were by some way inherited or bought by the French dukes of Burgundy during the late thirteenth and fourteenth century's. Maximilian, archduke of Austria and later Holy Roman Emperor, married Mary of Burgundy. Their son, Philip the Fair, married Joanna (the Mad) of Aragon and Castille (daughter of Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon, you'll probably heard of them) but he died before his father so his son Charles V became not only the Holy Roman Emperor and king of Spain, but also ruler of Austria, the Low Country's and what was left of Burgundy (and don't forget the Spanish colonies). When he abdicated, he gave the HRE to his brother Ferdinand and the rest to his son Philip II. That's why the Dutch were ruled by the Spanish. We only didn't really like them so we rebelled against them and gained independence
kingbarneyoflondon although the reactions under your comment tell how the Spanish inherited it from the Spanish it is important to know that the Spanish inherited the Netherlands from the Bourgondians. These Bourgondians fought many wars and it took almost a hundred year to get everything under their control. To say the Spanish just inherited it is a big simplification. If you are interested how it all went down I would suggest reading about the Kabeljauw wars and the Burgundian inheritence
Great video! But I have to point out some mistakes. The VOC in itself didnt make the United provinces wealthy, most of the income came from trade in the Baltic sea, the Dutch called it the 'Mothernode' as 80% of Dutch trade income came from there. In the video is also mentionned that the VOC did trade all around the world. This is false as it was only active in the East-Indies. The Dutch company that was active in the America's and Africa was the WIC, West-Indische Compagnie and it was more of a military company than a trade one.
I have to correct you on how much wealth the VOC brought to the Netherlands. The VOC waged a lot of wars and had a huge fleet, which drove costs of operations nearly to a bankruptcy of the company. Yes, it brought spices to the Netherlands, but most of the wealth of the Netherlands came from The Hanseatic League by trading produce. Trading in the Hanseatic League was much more profitable than the VOC and brought coinage to the country, standardizing coins and contributing largely to the economic boom of the Hanseatic cities, such as Zwolle, Deventer and Groningen. The Netherlands had a lot of fertile land from claiming land from the sea. This made most of the country very wealthy. The VOC only made the VOC wealthier, but because it was largely funded by the Dutch Republic, it drained a lot of wealth from the economy which was invested in the VOC colonies.

Nice Video, its cool to see the history of my home country. I liked how you tried to prenouce first dutch sentences. Of course you mentioned the VOC, but a that time there were 2 trade company s in The Netherlands, namely the VOC and the WIC( verenigde West Indische Compangie) and they trade in the America s where the VOC trade in Asia. So the setlements in New York, Curacao and Suriname are proporty at that time of the WIC. They had the same rights and duty s as the VOC.

2:32 It's a small difference but really changes the meaning - Stadtholders were "stead holders" rather than "state holders". The word means the same as lieutenant.
You made a mistake in your maps. You included the Noordoostpolder in the maps. The Noordoostpolder wasn't polderd in untill the 1920's. There were two small islands there (Urk and Schokland). Yet these were very small.
No mention of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire or the other Caribbean islands who formed pat of the WIC? (West Indisch Companie) I find it agravating how in every video those are forgotten as of today they are still part of the netherlands.

3:28 I notice you put little WIC flags where the VOC didn't operate, which is a nice attention to detail, but utterly lost on anyone who doesn't already know this if you don't tell them.
Also it's my understanding that while certainly wealthy and powerful, the VOC didn't do that much for the Netherlands and it's people; Moedernegotie brought significantly more wealth to the nation and populace.
If I wanted to read, I would open the book instead of trying to watch a video that has subtitles
Great effort with speaking Dutch! 🇳🇱
I did not understand the first sentence as I was surprised *shocked* you did that
From now on you should do that for all vids. Speak the language of the subject

@Tech For live Ahh, I have second neven (cousins) and I believe a Tante ( aunt)that live there. Parenthesis for others to part understand.
I would have liked to see more on how the Spanish came to control the area
@@joostgoedhart2005 we didn't dislike the Spanish, we disliked Philip II, we seemed to be fine with Charles.
kingbarneyoflondon although the reactions under your comment tell how the Spanish inherited it from the Spanish it is important to know that the Spanish inherited the Netherlands from the Bourgondians. These Bourgondians fought many wars and it took almost a hundred year to get everything under their control. To say the Spanish just inherited it is a big simplification. If you are interested how it all went down I would suggest reading about the Kabeljauw wars and the Burgundian inheritence
Great video! Short, sweet and to the point
It's a unspoken rule that if a video has the word Nederlands in it you click on it

The Dutch in the intro was like hearing one of my Dutchie Classmates trying to speak English, it’s horrible lol. Well, at least the accent.

Hey man, pretty fun video to watch, nicely done! I'm only a little bit disappointed that you didn't include 'het rampjaar' or the disaster year, especially since it played a pivotal role in the Dutch history. Other than that, great video!

Slight correction. "Stad" in "Stadhouder" isn't the Dutch "Stad (city)", but rather the German "Statt (place)". A Stadhouder was a "placeholder" for the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, or rather the one who governed/ruled in his stead.
Rotterdam wasn't completely destroyed in WWII either, but rather it's city centre was heavily damaged
I'm Dutch but I do not understand it yet it is all very strange at the beginning
@Emotioness Expression I can assure you that definitely wasn't Afrikaans in the beginning
omg I never thought I would see my home town Enkhuizen in the intro of the video.
the Drommedaris to the left and de Drommedarisbrug in the middle I can see the exact details even the individual houses he go correct absolutely nailed it♥
Nice Video, its cool to see the history of my home country.
Also i forgot to mention that during the great depresion The Netherlands started building de Afsluitdijk(it is pretty cool, you should look it up).
this video is more about Holland...
It's more about The Netherlands before ww2, with a little bit of ww2 and nothing after that.

2:32 It's a small difference but really changes the meaning - Stadtholders were "stead holders" rather than "state holders". The word means the same as lieutenant.
Isn't it "city holders"? Stadt is city, right? So stadtholder is like the leader of the cities.

I have heard that the Indonesian government was really Anti-Dutch after it's independence. I am Dutch but my Grandma was born in Batavia(Jakarta). Her dad was a Dutchman so as soon as the Indonesians took power they were forced to leave Indonesia just because her father was Dutch.
you oversimplified a lot of the dutch history you should have gone into more detail
My family is originated from the "Hugenoten". They came to the Netherlands due to the fact that France became more catholic and the hugenoten (protestants) were pushed out of the country and fled to the Netherlands. Fun fact, most of them eventually went to Germany so only a few of them like the "Nawijnen" (or the surname translated to english "afterwines") stayed in the Netherlands where I live to this day.
