There are some differences in detail. Venice has destroyed Zadar and not Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik was annexed by Napoleon and French army when they asked to pass bye and then took over Dubrovnik government (no war). Last thing, there is more Croats in Jugoslav Partisans then in Ustaša, small details but they were left out to make the difference in West and East greater. Last thing is first king of Croatia Zvonimir was crowned 2 years before England become kingdom, that is a small fun fact :). All best to Canada and lots of Croatians and other Balkan families there making better life for themselves, best wishes.
You kept the original symbol of the nazis in the arm bands when everyone else in TH-cam censors it or changes it to the iron cross, respect, it’s part of history and it must not be changed no matter how horrible it was thank you and good job
It's all about monetization and region specific laws - they keep it vague in order to not get their videos demonetized and for countries that ban the swastika to not block the videos - that said, I'm all for presenting history how it happened but it's not like someone's going to forget what the swastika looks like because TH-cam videos choose to substitute.
@@Kleberei You fishin' for any particular answer? I mean, we know the obvious one is Germany. They did that after the war to pretend they weren't letting Nazis into the top echelons of state.
@Vi5oC4n3 Gladly not. German media generally does show swastikas in historical context. The only exception were video games. Recently, however, they loosened that rule so there shouldn't be any censorship of swastikas (in historical context) in the future.

Quick correction: The “Angevin” Dynasty that ruled Hungary and Croatia was actually the Capetian House of Anjou, who were a separate dynasty from the Angevins that ruled England.
@@str.77Your family, my family, it’s ALL the same family… and I don’t mean in the peace, love, we’re all human beings sense, I mean in the we’re all descended from Huns and Avars at some point sense. The ANGevins had that name and got to rule ENGland, HUNGary, FARance, GHORbatia and other lands for a reason. The 12 tribes of Croatia were just a collection of Avar (Ghoran) tribes, the same tribes exist in most other countries under different but similar names, like the Mogorovic/Muric tribe simply means Magyar/Moor/Moravian/Almoravid=great/middle, Kucic means Gucci/Coach/Koch/Kocs/Kushan/Kutch=ram/goat, Karinjan means Carry/Carey/Eger/Ker/Avar/Croat/Ghoran/Ogor/War/Ver=blood/mouse (they’re all closely related), Kukar means Kavkaz/Kirghiz/Caucus/Kek/Gok=Blue and may be of the same group as they Kay/Covey/Kiev/Kubrick/Kuby=stone although I’m not entirely sure. Subic is just Serb/Szerencs/Srem/Saragur/Xianbei=yellow/tiger(Sur+bache, Sur+ogur, Sur+bey where Sur I.e. English “Sir” is the root). Gusic is Keszi/Kessler/Kessel=knife/goat, Snacic is I believe simply a form of Singer/Sunak/Song/Xiongnu/Hun/Kun=sun/lion, Cudomiric I’m not sure about but may be Kotor/Kutrigur/Kurt/Kurd/Curtis=wolf or may otherwise stem from Satar/Kshartria/Csatar=100 lord/centurion/warrior, Poletcic is Polish/Polovec/Paloc/Polan/Polo=bull/bison, Lacnicic is likely from the Wlad/Lad/Laz/Latin/Rad/Red/Razvan=red lineage, Jamomet is from the Dior/Duar/Ghor/Gyor/Gyarmat/Yamato/Diarmid/Yurmati/Jamaat/German=God’s people/mountaineer lineage and finally Tugomir is from the Tocharian/Tongur/Tokes/Tewksbury/Tokay/Tucker/Dakar=squash/testicles/mirror line. Going back several thousand years and some of these lines likely merge like the Avar/Ogur and German/Dior line, Ghor+bat/Hrvat/Croat is a name form linking the two lines although the Croats clearly came with the Avars while the Germans were in Europe 700 years earlier at least. Kucic and Gusic are likely both descended from the ancient Yuezhi but the Kucic became Kushans in India before joining the Avars and coming to Europe while the Gusic probably stayed on the steppes and joined the Gokturks and then Magyars before they arrived. They say Y chromosome Adam and mitochondrial Eve both lived more than 200,000 years ago but it sure seems like we’re much more closely related than that.

My Croatian ancestors migrated to New Zealand before WW1 from Dalmatia, thanks for making a video that I can learn some of my own family's history from!
I'm here doing the same. All my life I was told my family is from Austria. But recently, documentation has been found that my great grandfather came to the US during WW1 from Croatia. It was a bit of a suprise. Not sure where the story he was from Austria came from.
@@christinaglazier9600 simply because he was an Austro-hungarian citizen, who entered the US with an Austro-hungarian passport. He was probably recorded as such by the US authorities. Croatia was not an independent country at that time, but part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. So it's equally correct saying that he was Austrian/Hungarian and Croat: he was Austro-hungarian citizen, and likely a Croat national.
My family is from Postira, and I was first generation born in the united states. My childhood was very much surrounded with memories of Croatia fighting for independence. I dont think i could ever forget when my father received news that one of his brothers had died in the war. I also don't think i'll ever forget how happy he was when it was ended. I feel very lucky now looking back as an adult that my father was so extremely proud of having been Croatian. He spent a great deal of time teaching me about his country, and it is still something that my cousins who live in Croatia make sure to keep doing. I am very proud to be Croatian.
Sorry, I believe the root of Hungarian/Croatian Angevin was from Charles I of Sicily, who was a Capetian prince of France, before founded his own branch of Capetian house of Anjou. Thus, this house was not the same as the Angevin house that ruled England (Plantagenet).
You know it. Hungarians call him Károly Róbert/Carloberto/Charles Robert. Btw he was the one that called on the Congress of Visegrad, where today's V4 stems.
Yes, Charles was the youngest son of King Louis VIII of France and was given the titles of Count of Anjou and Maine founding the Anjou/Angevin branch of the Capetian dynasty. The Angevins that ruled England were actually Plantagenet dynasty that ruled County of Anjou prior to that, eventually inheriting England and Normandy...they lost the county in 1204 when it was confiscated by the French king (Philip II...father of Louis VIII) and then given to Louis VIII's youngest son...as mentioned.
you are correct! Bravo....but we have something in common with england....king Richard gave cash to build a cathedral in Dubrovnik for giving him harbouring him.this is a good and friendly case....the unfriendly case...i wont write about it
hard to tell everything in 18 mins but you left out an interesting thing: the mongol invasions. Around 1241-42 the mongol empire came all the way to Croatia. Usually noone knows the mongols were this close to "western europe" and only turned back because of the death of the great Khan.

Šibenik is the first city in Europe to receive electric lighting and the second in the world 🇭🇷 🌞 ❤️ Jaruga Hydroelectric Power Plant or HPP (N.TESLA efekt alternating current)Jaruga is the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in the world and the first in Europe. It was built under the waterfall Skradinski buk on the river Krka (today within the Krka National Park). On August 28, 1895, just two days after the first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls, the first Croatian and one of the world's first electric power systems was put into operation: Hydroelectric Power Plant "Krka" - Šibenik
Well, to be precise, it was the first *Dalmatian* electric power plant, not "Croatian". Šibenik/Sebenico in those years was one of the main cities of the Dalmatian Kingdom, administrative region of the Austrian Empire. While the K. of Croatia & Slavonia was a distinct administrative entity of the Hungarian Kingdom. *Dalmatian* not "Croatian" then, when we talk about history (prior to 1920).

Ill give you hint as a Croat: bandic created a whole network of people who are voting for him in order to keep his jobs, often invented for the sake of that same mutual "benefit". In reality, this is a great burden and drain for the capital (Zagreb) itself and this is why we cannot move on. Honest citizens of Croatia are struggling to remove it but in such small country it's easy to "choke" vital reforms. It's not just Bandic, there are many "local sheriffs" as we call them, people who are stallling everything in order to keep their own position untouched and unquestioned. We have very low rate of violent crimes on streets - but bribery, nepotism and corruption are still strong, inherited from years of socialism.
Just to add something. First writing system Croatians used was Glagolithic script, then Latin. A lot of other Slavic people used it, but Croatians used it longest. Croatians used special type of glagoljica which is one of the further differences between Croatia and other slavic tribes. Also, Croatiana used special type of cyrilic (so called bosnian, croatian or western cyrillic) in which very important statute of southern duchy Poljice was written. Good video overall.

The Croats were actually fierce Habsburgs loyalists, which they displayed in 1848 when they sided with them against the Hungarian revolutionaries. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand the Croats actually rioted in Serbian neighbourhoods as revenge for the murder. So portraying them as wanting to break off from the empire and being against the ruling Habsburgs is very untrue to history.
The Slovenes were also very loyal to the Crown. The common man and the upper class intelectual held two very different perspectives. The party SLS, which at first valued Austrian rule but was later responsible for the breakup from Austria lost from holding 87% of all mandates to holding just 36% after the first election in the newly established kingdom. When the breakup was explicitly put to the vote in one Slovene region in the 1920 Carinthian plebiscite, the majority voted to join Austria.

As a Croat i am glad that you cover pretty much the whole history and not allow yourself to be entangled into details but instead you presented the rough outlines and shapes. Excellent work.
It's overall a good video for an outsider and non-specialist trying to parse Balkan history. However you missed one important point yet you were so close: when you discussed how the Hapsburgs made parts of Croatia the Military Frontier. The crucial point is that the Hapsburgs invited Serbs, who were fleeing the Ottomans, to settle there. In exchange for defending the border, they were exempted from feudal obligations to the Croatian nobility and the rule of the Croatian nobles' assembly in Zagreb (the Sabor), which obviously, didn't like that. This is the root of Croatian-Serbian conflict and the reason why there are Serbs in Croatia (in your video, the fact that there are Serbian majority areas in Croatia just kind of pops out of nowhere in 1991 and doesn't really fit with the rest of your story). Note that the Serbian breakaway state in Croatia in the 90s was called literally - the Republic of the Serbian Frontier. This Croatian-Serbian mixing caused by Haspburgs and Ottomans did create, as you correctly say, Yugoslav nationalism in Croatia in the 19th century - but it also created an exclusive far right Croatian nationalism that was very hostile to the Serbs as a foreign element, and from which ultimately the fascist Ustaše descend. It's fair to say most of this history would've been fairly different without the Serbian settlement of the Military Frontier by the Hapsburgs. If such an alternate history Croatia and Serbia joined in a different Yugoslavia, in the 1990s they would've probably parted ways peacefully like Czechia and Slovakia did. I can nitpick many things but it wouldn't be fair to (being from the region, and interested in history, I just know a lot about the subject) but the Serbian settlement of the Military Frontier is one of the most important events in Croatian history - it has shaped the history of Croatia from that point on to today to a very large extent.
Habsburgs did not invited anybody, they just used them. Serbs and Wallachians (romans) came as turkish reserve troops to keep the border but Habsburgs give them some privileges to change the side and regulated them 1630 with "Statuta Valachorum". The ortodox church used the fact that Wallachians were unreligious and make them first ortodox and later "make" them serbs (they lost national identity). Croats called them together: Vlasi (even today), and Wallachians was called: Morlaci.
What about Bosnia though? You'd still have three different ethnic groups there, and I doubt the Serbs would have peacefully allowed their secession from Yugoslavia, or that the newly formed Croatian state would just do nothing about it. You'd still get a Bosnian war.
I want to thank you for this TH-cam video, Suibhne. Since I'm Croatian on my mother's side, this is the first time that I REALLY learned anything about her heritage. As an aside, my father's ancestry is Armenian, but his family escaped what is now the Turkish city of Diyarbakir in 1916.

I do find it ironic when people insert the TH-cam symbol into there, though.

@@Kleberei You fishin' for any particular answer? I mean, we know the obvious one is Germany. They did that after the war to pretend they weren't letting Nazis into the top echelons of state.

Quick correction: The “Angevin” Dynasty that ruled Hungary and Croatia was actually the Capetian House of Anjou, who were a separate dynasty from the Angevins that ruled England.
Angevin is just the adjective form of Anjou, so it is actually still correct
we call them Anžuvinci in Croatia
@@tomasjakovac7950 No, it isn't correct because it is not the same family.

@@christinaglazier9600 simply because he was an Austro-hungarian citizen, who entered the US with an Austro-hungarian passport. He was probably recorded as such by the US authorities.
Croatia was not an independent country at that time, but part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Sorry, I believe the root of Hungarian/Croatian Angevin was from Charles I of Sicily, who was a Capetian prince of France, before founded his own branch of Capetian house of Anjou. Thus, this house was not the same as the Angevin house that ruled England (Plantagenet).
big true

Pretty interesting. I wish he also spoke about Tito, Partisans and Ustaše more, lol.
My great grandfather, born in 1871 died 1974, alweys talk that austrian rule was golden time for croats and that everything went to hell once austria disolved
Jelačić saved your crown but you only had given us more Hungarian rule over us instead of united Croatian territory under Habsburg crown.
@@sircopperfield7420 yeah but he's essentially right, we were never revolt prone towards Habsurgs or Hungarians. They just kept it decent enough looks like. Knew how much they can push us
only some students/intellectuals wanted to break free. Most just wanted autonomy and hungarisation to end
Its nice to see someone post about our small country and its big history in such a creatige and illustrative way ! Amazing presentation , well done!
@@t.r.8386 Well they were invited and yes they were used
They were invited to be used
What about Bosnia though? You'd still have three different ethnic groups there, and I doubt the Serbs would have peacefully allowed their secession from Yugoslavia, or that the newly formed Croatian state would just do nothing about it. You'd still get a Bosnian war.
So true. Almost most important fact
True, that should have been included.
However, it only became a problem due to nationalism and the dismemberment of the Habsburg Empire.

So the question dissolves to "what DIDN'T lead to Balkanization?" And I suppose the answer is "not so much".
Just to make assure of something, Croatia never lost the Croatian-Ottoman war after 1526 until 1553 when we became part of Habsburgs we didnt lose single part of our land
And just to know Stjepan Radić wasnt a leader, but he was greatest politician in world, he had biggest ever funeral in Croatia, 500 000 people came to his funeral, even tho in that time there were only 3 million Croats, and there was only newspaper in that time....

Modern day Croatia was named after White Croat people who settled there in the 7th century.
Ancient White Croatia was located in Western Ukraine south-eastern Poland and north-eastern Slovakia-Czechia and Hungary.

Thank you for such a unique video, Croatia is very interesting. Many history channels keep making videos about the same historical events. I much prefer this over the 12th TH-cam video covering D-day or something
Considering how complex the history of the Balkans is, you did a fantastic job here (and that's coming from a Master's student in Balkan History). There's no way you will have time to go over every major battle, historical figure, or political event in a TH-cam video, so you don't have to worry about that. Instead you managed to make something about the Balkans that is incredibly rare: A video that doesn't take sides or show obvious bias. You've earned a sub. If you ever consider going more in-depth and making a Balkan series, I'd be more than happy to help.
I'm happy that zu made this video about Croatia, thank you so much and well done!
