Custom A Pillar Speakers - Getting SMOOTH with Body Filler!

- After we fiberglass our A pillars we need to make things nice and smooth using body filler ( or what is commonly referred to as bondo ). In this project we are using Rage Gold and other products from body supply company Evercoat.

Great video series! I recommend coating them with SEM spray texture. It gives a consistent fine texture the gives the look and feel of OEM plastic parts. Then spray with vinyl dye as it provides the semi flat finish you find with most interior plastics. Compound curves like these can be hard to wrap with vinyl and the a-pillars will get seriously hot with direct sunlight and windshield magnification, which could cause the vinyl glue to release. I've used the spray texture in this exact application with great results over time, seasons, exposure, etc.

Now that you are at the decision making part of this build, you may consider modding the whole interior of the car. I am considering doing a headliner change for some kind of cool print. Many fabrics would work so check out your local fabric shops for options! Many of the trim panels can be covered in fabric too. You could totally change the look of the interior!
Mark, love all your videos. I'm learning a lot for future projects. In this case, I would go with whatever makes them match the car interior. If you can find vinyl that matches for example, use that. Something custom and amazing will look odd if the rest of the dash and doors are stock OEM.

Most upscale interiors have wrapped pillars. So it depends on the vehicle. My car I would wrap them with either a textured fabric(which is what most cars have, I'm sure you know what I mean), or some kind of suede like material.
mark i dont know if you will read this but on my truck i have curtain airbags that extend to the a pillars. I would like to do a pillar speakers but i realize that could easily be lethal. figured it should be mentioned in a video for people in the same situtation.
My A-pillers have tethers attached to the backside.
You should have used the same process on the outside that you did on the inside. That way the resin/bondo or rondo will flow. I use a paint brush and it levels amazing
That's what I thought.Why not use the rondo on the outside.Seems like way less work??
WRAP IT. In my Jeep SRT my A-Pilar’s are suede, so I know it’s going to be a challenge to wrap them
Definitely wrap it! I find it to be difficult to do those bends. Would be awesome to see it done professionally!
Another helpful tip: Once you get them to the state shown at the end of this video, it's helpful to spray them with a primer as a "guide coat" so that you can see any imperfections/high&low spots, etc much easier. This is particularly important if you plan to do a painted finish. Good video Mark. One question- What is the advantage of using acrylic as opposed to type 1 pvc (aside from the transparent material) ? Cheers.

Better to paint or texture them rather. Depends on the vehicle. Nice skin grain would be a 4 way stretch vinyl :) can't wait to see the finished product.

Whatever route you go, try to make it look OE.

Wrap them, I think it’s better for the acoustics because there is less sound reflection. Like putting a carpet in a room.
Whatever route you take just make sure it goes with the flow of the inside interior, ✌️ out

u can use flocking powder, or water transfer printing :D
Unless you are doing more of the painting in other areas of the vehicle that would match the pillars, I suggest you rap them up in some type of material that is more common in the interior.
Ok first off if you paint them you will need to spray the pillars with filler primer then sand smooth to get a even look of the paint! Due to the texture difference in the plastic and body filler. they would look just as good wrapped with matching color of the interior also less likely to scratch if wrapped. So I say wrap them.
Wrap! Looks better in my opinion, more professional and it matches the car
I would prefer paint just because i've wrapped panels before but not painted them so i'd like to see that process.

Upolster vs paint, I'd say what ever you do it should be the same as the B & C pillars...
Personally I like the look of harder surfaces above the dash line...A textured paint to give that OEM grain feel would be nice

Definitely wrap it with suede or lather with stitching finish.
I would wrap the in the same color as the headliner or dash. Be alot more work to paint due to the textured plastic surface. Are you going to use another mounting method for the pillar pod?Factory is kind of flimsy IMO especially with the added weight
Wrap it to match the middle suede of the seats. Would be nice and clean.

I agree....use Alcantara like Porsche interiors...it's super cheap too.
Wrap them, to get a consistent look throughout the car.
On another note.... is the filler in any way flexible? Thinking of all the vibrations in the car.... could that crack the thin layer of filler?
Thin? ;)
It's not likely. Filler is used in fibreglass subwoofer enclosures as well, and obviously a sub is going to create lots more vibrations.
Paint them with the gloss paint Doug used on his dash. Beat him at his own game. Lol. I know y’all are friends tho.

Man,I got the rings mounted,fabric stretched and fiberglassed......then the body filler,oh the body filler! What a nightmare,I got it done but it is filled with imperfections.Tired of it so I'm taking them to a pro to finish them up.
Body filler is by far the hardest part and I have no idea what the sanding techniques are to achieve the best results.
Is the fiberglass step necessary, or can you go from the resin covered fleece to Bondo?
The resin covered fleece does not have much strength and not covering it with fiberglass means the body filler will likely crack. The fiberglass is what gives the pillar strength, it's not a step that can be skipped.
Mark, get a body filler file, it will help you knock down the body filler faster.
Painting you have to have your prep work flawless! Or it will show every single thing you did wrong.
Wrap, more forgiving of any prep work you missed.

The average person cannot pull it off and should wrap it in what ever material they want.

What grit do you use on the body filler? 80 on all 3 passes?

hmm, for a pro touch, maybe wrap with a thin cloth that has an OEM texture then paint it OEM color (knock down the fibers with scotchbite, then matte clear). personally, I'd probably paint with a textured paint for expedience and cost savings.
You should do both and show us how they look in the car

Maybe paint them to match the oem look of the car. We seen you wrap so many times that i think it would be more informative to paint them to see some pro techniques.
Unless you have a good way to match the texture of the existing interior plastics or the dash you are probably better off wrapping them in my opinion. See if you can get some OEM material, it might look best matching the headliner if you can make the transition work with the rest of the trim. If that doesn't work you might find the best way to match is to find a way to blend the new trim texture into adjacent plastic trim and paint nearly everything plastic with the same paint. Nothing worse than jumping in a car with sunglasses on with a polarized lens and see adjacent panels with different shades of the same color on panels that should be the same.
If it will match the rest of the interior, i would wrap them in an appropriate material. Many times, a base trim car has textured plastic and the higher trim cars will have a material applied. Most good upholstery shops carry, or can order the material. With that textured plastic, I would find it hard to keep them from clashing with the interior.

Im just an idiot tearing up his car but I found that spraying the project with primer in between sanding sessions or applying new body filler will show you high and low spots.
i would try to match the rest of the dash, same texture unles there are allot of imperfections yes wrap them in upholstery but then why would you do all that work in fiberglass when you can fill in with can foam and form then cover just with sticks supporting underside for support. Can foam is much easier to work with than fiberglass and buying the good stuff actually last a long time. 👍

You’ve done too much finishing work to cover those up now! Paint those puppies! If you don’t like it you can still cover them, but it would be more of a chore to do it in the reverse order.
