I was 14 when when "Appetite for Destruction" came out and it just blew me away. Guns n Rose's were the total opposite of glam/hair metal. They were gritty, rugged and raw. To this very day Appetite is my all time favorite album EVER!

Yeah, GNR is definitely more classic hard rock, like Van Halen or AC/DC. Like you said, more gritty and raw. They did have big hair, but that was kinda par for the course for any band of the time period.

I get what you’re saying, but I would rephrase and say AFD’s explosion brought the “apex” or “zenith” for the genre between 1987-92. The tidal wave that opened ‘80s hard rock/metal to the masses really occurred in ‘83-‘84. But circa ‘88 was the pinnacle.

    • @spencerific93
      @spencerific93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@goodfella2400 I think that's a good summary. 1987 wasn't the start, but it was arguably the peak. In that year, we got Appetite, Whitesnake's re-release of "Here I Go Again" with that iconic video, and Def Leppard's Hysteria. What a massive year for hard rock and heavy metal in the mainstream.

It was the other way around... Motley Crue saw a plethora of bands like Poison, Vinnie Vincent Invasion & Cinderella using the 'glam' image by 1987, so they decided to take a tougher image w/ 'Girls, girls, girls' and took off the makeup & costumes.
Guns N' Roses (and Axl Rose's prior band Hollywood Rose) did use hairspray and eyeliner in the club days (there are pics!), but they opened for Motley Crue in 1987 and opted to follow their example...

I was a fresh high school student back in 92 when I first heard about GnR. Just got out of a very conservative school run by evangelists. The genre was so new to me. I was introduced to GnR by two of my new classmates who were...well...kinda' "off". I listened to both "Use Your Illusion" albums and only picked up "Appetite for Destruction" around two months after. I became a huge GnR fan and my bedroom wall was covered with posters of other hard rock/metal bands but most were GnR and Metallica.
My parents saw my collection of GnR cassettes and got awfully upset saying I should stop listening to their music or else I would end up being unemployed and a drug addict.
30 years later, here I am. Married with two kids. Making investments in stock and crypto while running my retail store for construction equipments. And every time I see people on TH-cam getting exposed to Guns n Roses and other bands from the genre, I feel so happy that I get to rock out with the new generation of people who appreciates the music. 😊

I was 6 years old when this came out and this was actually the first GNR song I heard. Missed out on Welcome To The Jungle somehow (May not have had cable then). It was on MTV on rotation as well as the radio. I loved this song from the moment I heard it. Even at 6 seeing what else was out there I knew this was the real deal.
When I was 12 I got a paper route (when kids could still do that) and with my first paycheck bought every Guns N Roses album that existed at the time: Appetite For Destruction, Lies Lies Lies (a friend warned me about the inside sleeve so I hid that one from my parents to this very day) and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2.
Didn't see Guns N Roses until the 2017 Reunion "Not In This Lifetime" Tour where they played for 3 and a half hours! Last song: Paradise City! That end section when it speeds up just imagine that with fireworks, pyrotechnics, and about 10 metric tons of confetti raining down from the ceiling. It was f*cking awesome!

Before grunge changed things up, when Guns N Roses released Appetite For Destruction, that album was a kick in the ass to the 80's metal bands. That album was huge.

You have to watch the Tokyo 1992 concert, they are in top form. Guns N' Roses are rock legends and the last of the giants. They don't have much left to prove. Hello from France.

I miss them so much! I was going insane w/all their music! It hit a chord being a teen in the 80's. It just blew everything away and I never looked back.

We used to call that dance the Axl Shuffle. I saw them with Great White and Armored Saint at the Palace in Hollywood in 87, and 5 more times before the 90's. It was the local metal stations gig; G n R was still playing small venues. When they blew up in 87, it was worldwide, for like 2 or 3 years.

He was a temperamental A-hole, but when he wanted to put on a performance few frontmen could match his charisma. The band as a whole was absolutely dialed in from 87-91ish.

I am a teen from the 70's so I am somewhat of a "Hard Rock" and "Blues Oriented Rock" snob. Led Zeppelin was my go to band (they did many blues covers). When the 80's rolled around my ex and I were starting to become disappointed. Until GNR and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Axl Rose and Slash are fine Rock Stars. Heavy Hard Rock and Roll at it's best! Great reaction!

Nobody paid attention to this album for over a year after its release. Then they dropped Sweet Child O Mine as a single, and Appetite for Destruction went on to sell over 30 million records and became the best selling debut album of all time.
Hair metal bands like Poison were on top of the world until GNR came along. GNR was dirty. They were dangerous. They wrote bad ass songs with the attitude to back it up. GNR fired the first shot to kill hair metal. Nirvana drove the final nail into the coffin. I'm glad I lived through that era and saw the tides turning. Made for an interesting childhood filled with awesome music.

Awesome Bro 👍 Guns and Roses rock especially this entire album one of the best albums of all time (Appetite for distraction, it kicks ass. I always looked at gun's and rose's as a dirty metal, rock band in a good way cross between hair metal and the rolling stones. Awesome 👍 stuff bro love it 👍❤️🥝🇳🇿

From the first time I heard this song it was my favorite of any songs. I’m 2021 I lived a dream and got to see it live in Washing Grizzly Stadium (home of the Montana grizzlies). Most amazing part is my wife surprised me with tickets for Valentine’s Day in 2020. Then had to wait a year cuz of Covid cancelation. But the show was amazing

I was fortunate enough to be at this show. The color part was filmed at the old Giants Stadium in New Jersey. It was a triple bill with Deep Purple and Aerosmith.
Axl asked the crowd if they wanted to be in a video for MTV. Then they launched into this song. The crowd went apeshit crazy. It was glorious.
