    • @TimDyck
      @TimDyck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      What I like about the old 30 30 Winchester is it’s balance. With a little practice you can bring it up and the sights will line up instantly. I no longe4 even really look at the sights, I look at were I want to aim, bring the gun up to my shoulder and squeeze off the round in one smooth motion. The lever is nice for a quick second shot but I haven’t needed that second shot since I was about 10 years old which is another advantage of the 30 30, low recoil. Low recoil means you can teach your kids to shoot it safely from a young age, I started shooting my grandfather’s 30 30 at 8 years old and was dropping deer that first year.

    Henry with the side gate "most versatile", Browning blr "strongest action", savage 99's "great all around". For the top 3. Savage has a great balance and rotary magazine for your spire point bullets. I believe an old Remington solved that with a spiral tube back in the day- haven't seen it since.

      @@littlehoot1234 😀 it can be, but highly depends on which "marlin." I can partially agree if you have an actual marlin and not remlin. Time will tell what ruglin will do. The rifle arrived today and I dialed in the scope just a couple hours ago th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL . I haven’t shot with a scope in probably 25 years. The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

      The "problem" that has always plagued Ruger concerning hunting rifles is that they build them like pistols.
      Too short of barrels!!
      If I can't aquire a Ruger or Marlin rifle in 24 - 26 inches in a 45-70 with more than a four round magazine, than I'll go somewhere else.
      They have have that fabulous 375 Ruger Magnum cartridge and they won't make it any longer than 23 inches with a muzzle break in a bolt action! Pathetic.....
      It will take Remmington or Winchester to come out with a hunting bolt action rifle in 375 or 416 Ruger Magnum at 24-26 inches with a great barrel and chassis.
      Then hunters will be all over them like Weatherby's, Nosler or a decent Browning at a great price.
      I understand this fad with short 16-18 inch lever guns, but theres a whole bunch of us out here that enjoy 22-26 inch barrel's out here for a little more distance shooting with accuracy and knock down power than a 50 yard brush gun.

    Henry Golden Boy in .22 LR
    Marlin 336 SC in .219 Zipper (pre-crossbolt "safety")
    The Henrys all have beautiful wood stocks and I have restocked the Marlin.
    I only have two gripes:
    The Golden Boy should have the receiver drilled and tapped because the existing way to mount a scope is not that great.
    To develop a good load for a centerfire .22 (like the .219 Zipper) pointed bullets are required, which means the rifle is best used as a single shot.

    Wouldn't trade the Savage 99 for any of these. Has a clip or rotary magazine and not tube fed so it can fire high velocity rounds eg: 300 Savage, 308, 243 Win. Durable and can reach out better than what you've listed. Rumor has it that they may go back into production.

Yet in the magazine where I read this article he said it gives this warning not to shoot .44 special but I did and no problem? Thing is if the manufacturer of a levergun being Winchester says it is chambered in .44 mag that is all you shoot out of it. A lot of it has to do with casing length.

      I would take a Marlin lever action any day over any other brand of lever action. My first was a Marlin 39 M short bull barreled lever action in .22 lr. Extremely accurate! One half inch bench rested groups at 100 yards! Scoped! Used that gun for 15 - 20 years!

    • @arrlmember
      @arrlmember 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidpelton1885 - Things change over time. I have a Marlin 336 SC that was made before they (and Winchester) bent over for the democrats and installed that useless crossbolt "safety." I don't know what year my Marlin was made, but the fact that it is chambered for .219 Zipper should be some indication that it was quite some time ago. Accuracy is great, but I prefer to load pointed bullets so I use it as a single shot.
      That was then, this is now. These days, my choice in a new lever action would always be Henry. Henry uses the tried and true half cock safety on their rimfire lever guns, and the more modern transfer bar on their centerfire rifles. Marlin and Winchester need to wake up and pull their heads out of the sand.

    Everything else aside, I was personally glad to see some people that knew how to properly shoot and not take the rifle down and gaze at it while working the action. So many tens of thousands of bolt shooters do that now, many of them dropping the rifle nearly to belly button level and bowing their head to gaze at it while gingerly working the bolt. I
    would guess that's why so many have gone to semi auto's.
    I can't even imagine how the poor habit of taking your eye off the target, and dropping your rifle out of proper position got started after so many years of American shooters being so successful and using proper form. I have my own theories, but I'll keep them to myself.
    Good shooting (to those who did it
    correctly- the others need to go practice more)

      From a safety standpoint 44 magnum in a rifle is to much power for home defense. Leverevolution ammo from my All Weather big boy is pushing 1950 fps, which would penetrate multiple walls in most homes, possibly striking someone in another room. I keep my Ruger revolver loaded with 44 special rounds, so if grand kids are there when someone breaks in, it's less likely to go through the entire house striking one of them.
