It would have such a positive impact if big actors like Cillian Murphy who seemingly have a lot of talk around their potential casting would come out publicly to say "I am absolutely not taking this role because I do not agree with JK Rowling and do not want her to profit." David Tennant being so against transphobic rhetoric has been such a bolster to younger trans people I know. The more actors who step forward in that way, the more hope there is for younger trans people growing up in these troubling times.
the thing is cillian murphy is very publically pro-trans. he worked on a movie called breakfast on pluto (beautiful film) where he played a trans woman named kitten. he was very respectful during the film's promotion and even talked to drag queens about the role, when referring to kitten he always used she/her pronouns. trust me, hes a good man
Cillian Murphy is a very private man who does not use the internet in terms of social media and the like. The only way he would be talking about this specific subject is if it’s brought up to him during an interview or something of the sort. But as someone said above, he’s always been respectful and an ally to trans people, and the LGBT community as a whole when it’s come up. Personally I do not believe he would take this role as it doesn’t align or coincide with his previous filmography as the only children’s films (two or three) he’s done is merely voice acting.
Cillian Murphy showed up at the repeal the 8th march in favour of abortion and a lot of trans people were involved with that. His brother is a teacher and thus it doesn't suprise me he wants nothing to do with this. Also his involvement and later criticism of him playing Kitty in Breakfast on Pluto? Yeah He's a sound lad. People also don't understand how impactful his role there is. Ireland had just decriminalised homosexuality in 1993 mind.
I'll never forget how proud I felt that an Irish man of his standing stood up for our right to choose. I was part of Together for Yes and he was so supportive of our campaign
@@anfearaerach Repeal the 8th has nothing to do with transgenderism, it was for women's rights, Women's. Cillian is for sure a sound guy but thank God he is not woke /stupid.

Unfortunately, this affects cisgender people as well: Imane Khelif won an Olympic gold medal in women's welterweight boxing at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Khelif, despite being a cisgender woman, was accused by JKR and others (mostly JKR) of being a man competing in a woman's sport. Khelif was being bullied so badly that the IOC had to publicly make a statement saying that Khelif had been tested prior to the competition and that she is a cisgender woman. Khelif filed a complaint in a French court against JKR and Elon Musk, which, as of September 2024, is still pending.
That whole situation was awful for Imane and the Taiwanese lady that caught up in her ravings BUT we did get like 2 whole weeks of JKR shutting the fuck up on socials while that was going on, so there was a brief upside to it.
And the stuoid thing is, given from where she was fron, the onky way for her to "be a man" wouls have been her being intersex of the androgen resistant type.... Meaning no matter what testosterone reeding you get of her, her body wouls be compleatly unable to do anything with it, meaning she would have been the one with a disadvantage!!!
I went to get my hair done and the nail stylist working there was talking about it, and so I chimed in trying to correct her ignorance. I said she is not transgender she was born a female and is still female (knew if I said cisgender they wouldn’t understand even more). She then said she was born with xy not xx so even if she’s born female she’s still a man. I was like wtf, I stopped talking after that cuz I knew there was no getting through to them. I try to be an ally when I can and do what I, as a straight cis woman, can to inform ppl. I have lgbt+ friends and family, and I’m ‘mom’ to my kids friends and I will do my best to protect them and my own.
Rowling is such a "champion" for women in sports that she said absolutely nothing praising or bringing attention to the many amazing female athletes and their accomplishments during the Olympics, instead spending her effort on falsely putting someone else down.
David Tennant was actually in the fourth HP film, however that was about 20 years ago. I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't be associated with any HP project now though.
Indeed. My reaction to that is simply a quote from Bender Rodrigues: "Ahahahahaha! ...oh wait, you were serious. Lemme laugh even harder. AHAHAHAHAHA!"
@@kwonjiahn8389 yes he was. It was only a small role from what I remember, so maybe that's why people don't realise or remember he was in the original films.
As a trans queer actor, I don’t care if straight/cis folks play trans characters. What I DO care about is that ONLY straight/cis actors receive awards/accolades/PAY INCREASES for doing those roles when queer/trans actors don’t. It’s about PROFITING off of a group that universally had/has financial struggles.
I laughed out loud out of EMBARASSEMENT with the david tennant bit. How can people be so unaware????? He's genuinely the last person on earth that would willfully engage with anything HP related!!! I wasn't convinced about the ramifications of the echochamber, but that absolutely proved you right
I actually had no idea he's so strongly supportive of trans rights. I love David Tennant but I'm not on social media where he would be sharing a lot of these photos and whatnot, and I don't really follow entertainment news or watch/read a lot of interviews (I'm a very boring person, sorry lol). Like, today I learned that Rowling has called him "part of the gender taliban" (which I love for him). So I can understand how people might not realize. I'm more sad about the fact that people are so unaware of how toxic Rowling is that they would be excited about someone as beloved as David Tennant being involved. If I heard he was cast in a role, my heart would drop out through the floor. I had actual tears of joy during the little segment about him.
@suchnothing David actually doesn't have social media either, but he's been a phenomenal ally in every event and interview he's been to. He also has a non binary kid.
Yeah, most of the original cast has spoken out against Rowling including Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, hence her tweet about "expecting an apology" from the two a while ago. Tennant has become a phenomenal ally in recent years and I really respect him for that, heard that he's been seen wearing a pride TARDIS badge along with trans pins and he's so based for that lol
David is a huge advocate for trans rights especially because of his non binary child and JK Rowling has gone after him multiple times because of it saying he's a danger to women so I'm pretty sure both of them would rather die than work together lol
Long time big fan of Cillian Murphy here. To start with, he’s a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, and as you said Jamie you can’t judge him for a role he played 20 years ago. Personally I love Breakfast on Pluto as a film but agree that if it were made today it would be better to have a trans actor play Kitten. Cillian doesn’t have any social media and barely uses the internet (so much so he found out that he was nominated for awards for Oppenheimer through his friends and family texting him). I highly doubt he’s aware of any fancasting unless his sons have mentioned it to him (also unlikely). Even then, Cillian is known not to sell out to big brands (the exception to this being Batman because he was excited to work with Christopher Nolan). I honestly really doubt he’d accept the role even if he was offered it! That’s just my two cents on the matter as someone who knows far too much about him for his own good!
Your comment reminded me of an interview clip I've seen a few times, where the interviewer mentions something about memes and Cillian just stares blankly before saying, "what's a meme?" I envy this level of disconnect from the internet, we need to protect him at all costs.
@@marmelade8331this is just off the top of my head so there could be more instances in which he took a progressive stance, he was a big proponent of women’s right to choose abortion when that referendum was going on and he was also critical of folks trying to use children’s welfare as an excuse to be against the gay marriage referendum (it was a joint statement with a research facility so they tried to make it sound neutral but like, only one side was trying to weaponise the supposed welfare of children in the debate and it wasn’t the pro-gay marriage side)

BREAKFAST ON PLUTO! YES! I've been a Cillian Murphy fan for over 15 years and its been one of the first films I've seen of him. Now I am inclined to push for queer roles to be played by (openly) queer actors but thats a discussion for another time. I REALLY hope he makes a public statement about it. He (or his team) has publicly denounced peaky blinders footage being used for homophobic purposes. Fingers crossed he does the same for this 🤞
Acting is fundamentally about embodying characters and stories that are different from one's own reality. The ability to take on various roles and identities is central to this Art. Limiting actors to roles that match their real-life identity restricts their artistic freedom and diminishes the transformative power of performance. I'm so tired of those essentialist ideas, people are now reduced to their identities and mental disorders, and that's not what the LGBT community fought for. Movies are not where we need meaningful, authentic representation for marginalized communities.
@@vithanatopraxie Yeah the only time i think the whole "queer characters should be portrayed by queer characters" thing really makes sense is when it comes to trans characters, who should absolutely be played by trans actors. Gay actors have been playing straight characters for centuries, why does should it matter if a straight woman portrays a lesbian?
My workaround for this is finding books or shows second hand so my money won't supporting the original creator or publisher edit: other than that though, I 100% agree
Someone I met recently asked me my hogwarts house when I mentioned growing up with lego harry potter on my 3DS. Ultimately I told them, I won't deny that I loved it and I'm not entirely ashamed of that, but it made me pause because I haven't been asked that in YEARS. JK has genuinely just made the franchise much harder for me to enjoy in the way I used to. It's actually led to me clinging to nostalgia from Percy Jackson, learning that Rick Riordan as an author has not only been completely affirming and avoided most controversies in his work but has written a genderfluid character and does his best to represent all kinds of people. It's also just very fun and engaging even for me as a young adult.
Unfortunately, PJO has its own problems as well. Racism, poorly handled queer characters and storylines, and just the lack of actual neurodivergent representation despite that's what drew many people to it. I'm not gonna list out everything, and there are a bunch of people who have done so much better than i ever could, so i suggest looking for those. The anti rr or anti rick riordan tag on tumblr id say is a good place to start
I do want to say in defense of Cillian Murphy in Breakfast on Pluto, is he did push a bit for the movie to be made, and that it is a movie that put a trans woman in a positive, humane light in a time this was not common at all. I haven't seen it in years so I don't know how it holds up, but I remember talking about it back then with classmates who definitely had a positive attitude towards trans people partly because of that movie, who spoke with such kindness and empathy for the main character when talking about this movie.
I randomly caught this film playing on TV back when I was living at home still (do 2012 at the latest) and watched it with my mum not knowing anything about it. I knew I was part of the community, but had very little experience with other members, and in fact didn't even know about the existence of trans people at that point beyond the early 2000s gross jokes. My mum was, and still is a bit homophobic (as in, she didn't cut me off when I came out to her, but she's also under the belief that non-straight people shouldn't be allowed to adopt children or get married). We still watched the whole of the film and actually fell for the main character. It was that good. I know it's not ideal that a cis man played a trans woman, but it was done in a respectful, masterful way.
I watched this movie about 6 months ago for the first time. I am part of the queer community, not trans myself but with many trans friends. And i'm happy to tell you that this movie imo still holds up and is honestly a movie I hold close to my heart bc its just so lovely and wholesome
Haven’t seen the movie but yeah, a cis man playing a trans woman 20yrs ago has VERY different implications to if it happened now. It’s pretty safe to say someone playing that role in 2005 is an ally, but it would be the opposite now. Times change and our understanding of these things change

In an alternate reality where I wasn't aware of Rowling's transphobia, I would still have zero hype for a HP tv show produced today. There's just no way it's going to be any good, no matter who plays Voldemort. As it is, personally I'm just going to stonewall it: no talking about it, no discussing it online, let's give this thing zero oxygen and hopefully it gets cancelled mid first season.
I watch a twitch streamer pretty regularly and when the hogwarts game came out people kept asking if he would play it, and he just didn't acknowledge or answer. Never made a big statement, never took a hard line, never made a big deal. He simply didn't engage with it at all. It was really a good way to handle it imo. Because there could never be any kind of big headline like "STREAMER DENOUNCES HARRY POTTER GAME" and it could never turn into a debate or anything like that. It was just dead in the water on that whole little corner of the internet. Any publicity is good publicity, so he gave it none at all.
My therapist calls this technique “grey rocking”. You basically become a boring grey rock and the thing/situation/person who wants your attention will go away. It’s a sister to stonewalling. It’s slightly less aggressive than ignoring. You’re present, but you’re not giving anything. It’s subtle magic. But made specifically for bigots, narcissists, bullies etc
@@lfrands if their whole point of dominance is you being gay/trans/woman, how are you gonna "be a grey rock" about it? Stop being gay/trans/woman? Your entire existence is a trigger to them
You could have stories set in that universe that would be great... if Rowling somehow gave up the rights or died. There's a ton of great works made from Raold Dahl's work and he was a horrible racist. But he's dead. (Also, there have been terrible things made from his work too)
Definitely wouldn't blame any child actors, and possibly even little-known actors (unless they have clearly transphobic views, and that's why they're comfortable with the role), but any huge actors like Cillian Murphy have so many acting opportunities. Actors that big have the luxury of choosing which projects they're involved in. You hear a lot of actors joining obscure/smaller movies because they're super into the concept or character, and equally turning gigs down if they aren't interested in a particular genre, or things like that. If you're an established actor with lots of work options, who has a good reputation and enough money to continue living comfortably for plenty of years to come, you are able to choose not to be involved. If you decide to be part of it, you're broadcasting to the world where you stand
That was exactly my thought. If you are a nobody on the scene, sometimes you can't afford to turn anything down. Everyone's gotta eat and pay rent. But Cillian Murphy does not qualify for that exemption lol.
@@suchnothing so if you're poor, you can throw away your moral, but if you're rich, you must stand up for what's right? Isn‘t that a bit insulting to poor people? like you accept them with a lower standard as human beings
@mengrnrnrnr it's less about moral standards, and more about ability. Have you ever skipped meals because you couldn't buy food, or fearfully wondered how you're going to pay rent week? Because I have. It's less reasonable to ask a new actor who gets very little work to turn down a role, because the risk and hardship to them is so much higher. I'm more willing to give a pass to someone like that because I know how desperate it feels to be hungry.
I unfollowed the Bridgerton sub for similar reasons regarding just banning “political” subjects adjacent to casting choices and similar topics to avoid the ugly side of their fandom. They all should take a look at the Good Omens subreddit since the accusations against Neil Gaiman. It’s been very heartening to see the vast majority of fans believing the victims and wanting to see that Gaiman gets no further credit or direct profit from the show. They are also discussing things like concerns about the legacy of Terry Pratchett and the fear that the decisions of others involved in the project will prove ethically dubious as things go forward, which seem like reasonable topics for a fandom facing a scandal from a central figure. The mods allow that type of discussion along side of regular fan discourse. The fandom itself has been very admirable overall. It shows that on some topics, fandoms can be held accountable and be respectful and even self police. And it says even more about which topics are taken most seriously by the public. It’s disappointing that transphobia is so ingrained that more Harry Potter fans don’t feel their own hypocrisy mimicking Rowling’s. The Harry Potter books’ messages seem like they should attract the opposite audience to her personal politics.

I saw pink news come up with a list of trans actors and actresses who they think would be great in the new series and honestly I can't work out whether that would be a hilarious f you to JKR or if it's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.
I've heard that Pink News doesn't want to promote too much trans stuff, because "it's too controversial", "we're not a charity". Shows that they're a corporation first. But trans actors/actresses in HP is a funny idea.
Apparently there was a "trans" character in the hogwarts game, and it just gave lazy and uncaring "allies" an excuse to buy and enjoy the game without remorse. So that leans me more into thinking it would be a terrible idea. Unless, of course, ALL the characters were played by trans people. Then I might be back on board 😂
Any trans actors willing to be in a show based on something JKR is involved in would be harassed out of existence by all the transphobes that woman keeps courting.
Yeah... I bought the books a few years ago and I still have the last book to finish but yeah, I'm not spending a penny on anything Harry Potter related ever again.
The special place for me is edging the books closer to the heating mains line at my parents house and doing what always works eventually and waiting for the inevitable Also coping with unsupportive apathy when I came out by binge watching CallMeKevin's Harry Potter game series is surprisingly effective therapy for the dissonance I had for reading the books during my childhood "So you're making me go off and pay for your stupid ingredients to take care of your illegal dragon and you're going off drinking- I didn't expect this when we got married Hagrid"
It's always made me a bit sad about how toxic JKR turned out. I remember being a teenager and reading tumblr posts about trans Hogwarts student headcannons, how if a trans boy was forced to go up the stairs to the girls room it would turn into the slide like it does in the book and would prove that he was a boy. Or how the opposite would happen for a trans girl. I read about how the Hogwarts letters would say their chosen name and not a birth name. I read all of these ideas from kids like me who wanted to feel included in something they loved, and JKR stabbed them in the back. I never feel sorry for JKR, she lives with the consequences of her actions. It's those kids - now adults - I feel sorry for.

I had a conversation with my trans friends about this recently, they all agreed how much harry potter meant to them as kids, and while there is still plenty of nostalgia there, that's all it was: nostalgia. Because looking back on the books you see so many problematic elements regarding things like the house elves and snape's characterisation that are problematic but are played completely straight. There's a reason SPEW was removed from the films... because going back to these books.... many things just leave a bad taste in our mouths, especially with the hindsight of Rowling's bigotry.
I'm going through all the films right now just to see how bad they got (I didn't as a kid), and uh, there's stuff in there that nobody really talks about, too. I don't see him as someone taking on that role just for the money or whatever, and I also don't think it's interesting enough for him. His talent would be wasted on such a two dimensional villain to be honest.
I’m also Cillian obsessed. He’s not a sellout, he doesn’t work with anyone unless it’s a role he wants to do and I just can’t see him doing Voldemort. Besides, he’s an ally and I think he knows better
I can’t see any reason why a serious actor like Cillian Murphy would play Voldemort. It’s ridiculous compared to literally every other role he has had. By American standards, he is very progressive and has shown support at pro-choice marches, for women’s rights in general, and for the LGBTQ+ community. He is not the typical actor in Hollywood. He hates fame and he isn’t a sellout. Him being in a HP movie is laughable.
@wannabedrewafualo I almost forgot about the pro-choice march. Yeah you're right, he wouldn't. The mere thought just made me panic for a moment, because I'm not ready to lose yet another male celebrity who I thought was a solid guy. 😢
Voldemort is a flat character. Evil for the sake of evil, you cannot believe he is competent within the narrative. I doubt Cillian Murphy would ever be interested in playing someone like that.
Cillian Murphy not only played a transwoman, but actively pursued the role. I would hope that he has more sense than take a HP role. There's a millionaire other projects he could do to get a check. Not to mention his entire career has been taking interesting roles vs taking a check.
I was at a birthday for a family member last weekend, hearing people complain that this series will 100% be "woke". I didn't have the energy to remind them that JK Rowling is a massive terf, so not to worry. I just can't understand how the woman who wrote 7 books with the plot of "love conquers all" turned out like this. I honestly feel bad for whatever child actor gets casted for this, cause it will tank their career in anything that isn't conservative media circles.
If you take a closer look at the books there's also a lot of thinly veiled racism there, she's never been "woke". Oh and remember in the original movies when they cast Lavender Brown as black, but then when she became a love interest for Ron they recast her with a white actress? Fun times.
I mean woke doesn't just mean 'trans' even though it feels that way depending on what we're discussing. They also don't want any racial diversity or other lgbtq+ representation or women with well fleshed out story arcs and a voice of their own. So even if there isn't a smidge of trans representation, it'll likely still be considered too woke of someone is black they didn't agree to or god forbid a woman has a good story arc.
@@marlyd Honestly, I've also seen global warming being called as "woke". At this point that word is being thrown out to mean anything that is actually important to humans AND nature. It's ridiculous!
I see this a lot in left spaces but I honestly thinks it makes perfect sense. Joanne sees her reaction to trans people as a form of love for cis women. she doesnt see any issue with the things she does because, in her mind, she doesn't hate trans people, she just loves cis women. she's wrong ofc, like all bigots she uses her personal feelings to judge entire groups. but that's why she's able to do it without the obvious disconnect from the things she's ostensibly believes in. to her, she's acting with love, entirely within her morals. I believe this is why she's a lost cause.
i like harry potter a lot, i think it's a shame that the name of the author has been tragically lost to time. we just have no way of knowing who they were unfortunately. we can assume, however, that they were a poorly cultured white man based off the misogyny and weird racism that is way too prevalent in the story
Heya so I also dont like harry potter but could you give me some of the reasons why you hate it so I can bully my friend(lightheartedly) (who likes harry potter)
@@amagicalbeing7427 Start looking into how the people are named. Cho Chang is the southeast Asian girl, whose name is literally a Korean and a Chinese last name, both of which come up immediately if you google "Korean/Chinese name". Kingsley Shacklebolt is a black man. The Irish boy is named Seamus Finnigan which is a stereotype in and of itself, but he's also constantly blowing things up. Literally every girl/woman we are supposed to like is either a mother figure or "not like the other girls". The house elves like to be slaves. Goblins are just the stereotypical racist portrayal of jews. Love potions are essentially date rape drugs. All the evil women (and pretty much all evil people in the books) are portrayed to be ugly in some form, so only the "heroes" get to be beautiful. And that's just off the top of my head
@@amagicalbeing7427 - Bouts of clumsy tying up various plot lines; - Clumsy attempts to appear non-discriminatory whilst holding on to a load of British racial and cultural stereotypes; - Sir Terry Pratchett didn't like JKR or the HP books (and he's my hero). Those are just a few initial thoughts.
@amagicalbeing7427 Other things I would suggest around the "house elves love slavery and would be miserable without being slaves." Literally using the same arguments that Southern slave owners in the US used to justify to keep enslaving African people. How Harry is allowed to be a "good slaveowner" at the end of the franchise. Hermonie is made fun of for fighting for the rights of house elves. The antisemitic stereotypes around the Goblins. The racist names like Cho Chang and Kingsley Shacklebolt (one of the only Black characters in the books). The fatphobia is bad throughout the books and especially misogynistic writing around the women characters. Or how the werewolves were an allegory for Aids and how while Lupin is shown in a sympathetic light, the other werewolves are shown to prey on children. So basically homophobic viewpoints around the Werewolves. This isn't even getting into the love potions and how they justify the rape of male victims and also women victims with Umbridge. There is more I could say, but that's enough.
@@amagicalbeing7427 the signal adult black person is literally called kingsley shacklebolt and despite being (supposedly) incredibly qualified he spends the entire story doing absolutely fuck all except hyping up albus. i think this is really apparent after the death of dumbledore when alistair (mad eye) moody the big ol' white bloke who really should be in some kind of full time therapy after being locked in a box by a serial killer for a year becomes the leader of the order of the phoenix instead of kingsley who was no longer doing his bullshit hand wavy ministry job and is clearly more qualified and capable if you believe the author saying so without even attempting to back it up cho chang is the only east asian character in the entire story. her name sounds like a slur and is actually 2 surnames from 2 different countries (cho is korean and chang is chinese) also she was sorted into ravenclaw who are known for being all book smart haha ✨stereotypes✨ i could go on, the author clearly doesn't know enough about minority groups or just hates them
Go back and read HP again and you can't help but notice the seeds of madness beginning. The first explicitly black character's surname is *Shacklebolt*. The goblins are wealthy, grasping creatures who control the banks and are characterised with long noses. Rita Skeeter's characteristics are quite masculine, as if she's a man dressed as a woman taking small boys into closets. Every time a character could have a redemption, they don't. Even Snape's quasi-redemption is based on his own personal feelings rather than any belief in what he was doing. I suspect that the monster was always lurking beneath the service, waiting for the right (indeed, far-right) moment to activate.
Kingsley isn't the first explicitly black character, though. Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson, Dean Thomas... otherwise I do agree, though. It's weird because in the story, Dumbledore is always portrayed as being crazy for believing in second chances and that people can change (while the series proves that bigots pretty much stay bigots and bullies stay bullies). But, yeah, you only get a redemption arc in HP if you're a man. Imo I have always found it weird how JKR tried to act "woke" when she wrote a deeply conservative and sexist series. Her activism has always been performative and tokenist at best; she's clearly the kind of person who thinks that making a black guy PM means racism doesn't exist while ignoring the fact that POC characters don't actually play meaningful roles in any of her books. It's just so weird she's built her whole terf identity around being a feminist when she's actually just a pick-me and seemingly has no awareness that she is not a feminist icon, did not write books that even centered female characters and perspectives, and did not contribute anything meaningful to feminism as a movement beyond being the most successful female author of all time. Idk I just truly don't get why she hates transwomen so much when she doesn't seem to actually LIKE women.
Don't forget the happy-slave-trope House Elves (who speak in pidgin English for no logical reason). Or the Irish character (Seamus?) who's always blowing things up. Or one of the few/the only predominantly featured Asian character being named Cho Chang, AKA laziest most stereotypical-sounding Asian name ever. Or the fat shaming/almost every villain character being overweight. Those are just off the top of my head.
I still defend the overall merits of the books themselves - lukewarmly and begrudgingly because we all agree she doesn't deserve it, but I just can't justify throwing out the baby with the bathwater. But even I'll admit there's a lot of stuff that at the time read very much as "oh, see? This is showing how messed up the system is and how it needs to change!" but given her recent brainrot is now harder to say that was the intended message. Like in Deathly Hallows, I always thought it was supposed to be understood by the reader that Bill Weasley was WRONG to tell Harry not to completely trust Griphook, and Griphook double-crossing them was a direct result of Harry, Ron, and Hermione not telling him the whole truth and planning on double-crossing him first. That was explicitly a misstep on Harry's part that made things worse. But now given the author's current views I can no longer be certain that was the intended reading.
That's a shame about the Harry Potter remake, especially when other fantasy books could work much better for the medium. On the bright side, Percy Jackson and The Olympians season two arrives in 2025.
Personally as a trans person I would be very disappointed to see any actor take a role in this series, but especially one who has shown support to the LGBTQ community in the past. Unless the actor truly was not aware of JKR's transphobia, in which case I would expect them to leave the role once they are made aware. Especially for high profile actors, taking a role in this would make people take the transphobia less seriously, because 'surely if it was that problematic then such a well known actor wouldn't be supporting it, right?'
I'm glad you found a way to enjoy to enjoy this franchise without giving JKR money. I do the same thing because I REFUSE to obey the bible thumpers that told me I couldn't enjoy this franchise in my youth. And if this isn't enough for people, Then trans rights were never the real issue for them in the first place.
As a longtime fan, would be extremely surprised to see Cillian attached to the Harry Potter franchise for several reasons. Post his Oscar win he has started his own production company with which he's producing several films that he's acting in. They're to his taste, quite serious, emotional films by the look of it. His biggest film franchise involvement in the past is in Nolan's Batman-trilogy, of which he's stated that his interest was mainly direction-driven, he was obsessed with Memento and would have been happy just to be in a room with Nolan. He's been fan-cast as Bond (he said the next Bond should be a woman) and fan-cast as Doom for Marvel (RDJ was cast). All the indication is that huge franchises are not where his interests lie nor is making huge amounts of cash for the sake of it. He's talked about how much he's enjoyed shooting blockbusters with Nolan since Nolan operates in a very intimate way, more indie-like. Post his Oscar win his first movie to come out is an Irish indie film that he produced with other production companies about the abusive Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. He's also involved on a small budget continuation to 28 Years Later which they're working into a trilogy. He's also said that he's gotten a lot of offers post winning that he's turned down. Cillian is very private but you can see glimbses of his views at times just as of his personal life. He contributed to the abortion campaign in Ireland and said it was a good time to move back to Ireland when the same sex marriage referendum was passed. He's worked for years with the Unesco Child and Research Center and criticised the negative use of children in the same sex marriage referendum and said that young people should have equal opportunities to the future regardless of their sexual orientation, including the right to marry. He's always talked positively and kindly about his experience playing Kitten, always referring to her as she/her when the interviewers in 2005 would misgender her, and championed for the making of the movie for years because he loved the book it was based on. So we can surmise he's open and LGBTQ+ positive. Can also say that I haven't seen any of Cillian Murphy's fans interested in this fan casting. The consensus seems to be, fuck no, that's ridiculous, he would never take this job.
It sucks because Harry Potter has always been a special interest of mine, so it’s not something I can do easily distance myself from. What I have been more able to do, like you said, is not support anything new that she-who-must-not-be-named does, instead just enjoying the books I already have and the fandom spaces that do not align with her views. It’s a tough balance, but when it comes down to morals, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do!
Feel you, my whole confort space and source of my friends was all about harry potter I cosplayed luna, i found my best friend du to her writing funny mini ffs about harry potter.... I was so involved. She is jot getting any penny of me no matter what, but I am especially butter, that I can varely reread the books without looking for errors and hints of her being terrible
I seem to remember that Cillian turned up to support a nurse's strike once, just casually, no fanfare, rain and all. Idk if that implies that he'd be almost as 'bad' a pick as David Tennant, but I'd like to think so.
Trans guy here! I was so obsessed with the Harry Potter books when I was little that I thought the magical world was real until I was like 11 years old lol 😭 and I still have old Harry Potter sweatpants and some other old HP things in closets around the house. I just use the inspiration from my nostalgia to write and create my own characters in my own magical world. I have a special villain in mind who shall not be named 🤣😂🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
I just don’t understand why she has to act like a real life Batman villain about it. She just keeps yapping and doubling and tripling down. You think she’s terrible? Wait a week, she’ll make it worse. Like why wouldn’t she just shut tf up and collect her checks? Makes no sense, every time she tweets it’s like, who asked?
I pirated the hogwarts game once. I found it quite mediocre honestly, not even really worth pirating. Environments and combat were decent but that's about it. The story wasn't good and you rarely see a game with that bad a case of open world bloat these days.
I do feel bad for these kids though because most of the child actors probably aren't aware of JK's transphobia hell I know a lot of adults who aren't aware of her behaviour.
I will never forgive JK Rowling for ruining Harry Potter for me. It was a place of refuge for me when I was a little queer kid in a small town in the early 00s and now it's tainted.
Nope. Neither will I. Or Hobby Lobby or Chick-fil-A. But I've had to put my small spending foot down somewhere. I wish everyone would put their feet down and KEEP them down! I'm sorry it was ruined for you, but there really ARE other amazing authors out there. Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, if you like sci-fi/fantasy. Ask around! There are so many others!
I think the books were always a little sus with the goblin, slavery apologist stuff, the names being problematic...I honestly believe the movies are more consumable as media which was its main job as an adaptation.
I will never understand how JK can go from writing a series about a young boy being abused and misunderstood by two halves of the world, to condemning the very people she inspired to feel safe for the first time in their lives. The mental gymnastics should see her on an Olympic team.
Because they turned on her first ... you all acting like she started off saying terrible transphoic things when raising legitimate concerns about how it was impacting women turned her away from supporting the community... you attacking her and her child turned her away from supporting the community
David Tennant would nail any role he was put into because he is such a brilliant actor. But he's also a brilliant human being and so would never be involved with a franchise that profits a highly influential billionaire transphobe.
Anti woke is being proud of excluding people, looking away from injustices done to someone else. Is that what we want our kids to learn? Being proud of being anti woke is like being proud about being a sorry human being. No thanks, not for me!
Being woke is doing the same thing and claiming you are doing it because you are a decent person. You do not seek to understand other peoples positions or engage in conversations that could help break down the barriers between two groups All this JKR hate started because the community refused to engage with legitimate concerns being raised about the affects this rapid pogression was having on women and famale spaces. The hate has now metastasised so much that you are all incapable of seperating the art from the artist and and claiming the harm is from her when the harm is from your inability to recognise the two things as seperate. You do not have to buy new things but if you own the books and DVDs you can still watch and enjoy without "putting money in her pocket" instead you choose to show you are willing to harm the careers of children if they dare take a role in a franchise that is older than them
@@jannyjan90 So you are saying they are the same things, woke and anti-woke. So excluding people and creating hurt for them makes you a good person? I don't think so! As for concern for women's spaces, show me a serious sampling of trans people causing actual harm to any non trans woman in a bathroom. You can't because the most you could come up with is the occasional crazy, who every group has a few and no one claims as representative of them. Besides if they break the law, arrest them. On the flip side I could give a huge sampling of the harm done to trans people. One's fears, especially unrealistic fears do not justify the removal of others rights. In my opinion, it's just trying to justify bigotry. I care nothing about Harry Potter stuff. I am concerned with those who promote bigotry and hers you cannot blame on those she targets. No!
Well .. unless those actors are the best for the role (which if you like the books even a little and care about them being respected on screen, they won't), it'll be crap
@@mrleonmoff6523you are making the mistake of dealing with the most extreme of the extremists. Like properly whacko people in this comment section. Long since detached from reality
The term is "vote with your wallet". It is the only form of response big corporations understand. Purchase from small, independent, ethical creators. Don't give money that ends up in unethical pockets (or try not to as much as you are able).
With HP and JKR, *she* is the one who tied the success of the franchise to her personal views. *She* wanted that. *She* wants to equate the love of the books for endorsement of her positions, because of how wildly popular they were. It worked for her, to claim all those literal children must agree with her because they buy plastic wands and fluffy owls. She thought it was an easy win. But now she needs to accept that LGBTQ people and allies are going to take her at her word and reject the whole damn thing because of her. *She* did this. She made it impossible to separate art from artist in this matter.
The idea of David Tennant playing a role in a Harry Potter production now is so hilarious XD I love the man, truly. My favorite Doctor and such an amazing person in RL.
I don't care if it's the best show in the world with all my favourite actors. I will not support HP in any way unless that woman is removed from profiting from it in any way. I may not be trans, but I can see how the fascist wind is blowing and if we don't stand against people like her now, they'll be more books and poems in the future about people regretting not speaking out when they had the chance.
that might happen actually. i read recently that Warner Brothers is actually looking to buy HP from jowling wholesale, in part because her continued bigotry is hurting the brand, and thus, their profits.
This is very sad tbh and yeah it's okay Jammi tho it's sad that JK Rowling is like this tho Harry Potter is kinda cool tho but I don't support transphobia obv as a trans person
We grew up reading and watching Harry Potter and it used to be a big source of comfort and escape for us when we needed it. Its a bittersweet memory since she-who-must-not-be-named ruined it for us and we've fallen away from being able to be involved in that world at all, which is really sad. We definitely feel angry at JK for ruining a beautiful thing for so many. We hope others are able to enjoy the harry potter world and reclaim it as their own, separating it from the creator in their enjoyment and financial support buy purchasing everything second hand.
its so frustrating to me that i can no longer be comfortable with harry potter. I was talking to my boyfriend about this just yesterday, and the topic comes up every once in a while. Both of us found so much comfort and escapism in the harry potter universe as children, in our own ways, and now we can't even look back at it fondly. Knowing that the person who created such a meaningful thing for us wants to cause us as much harm as possible now, it's become impossible to separate art from artist for us, even if we dont do anything to support her. It absolutely sucks that such a big source of comfort for me in my crappy childhood is now completely tarnished because of the woman who created it. It's an open wound, and i unfortunately dont know if itll fully ever heal over. Even if the franchise is taken from her, even if she's no longer profiting from it, I will always know that the person who created something so comforting to me only ever really wished me harm in the long run.
@@jannyjan90 she advocates for banning trans healthcare, supports politicians who advocate for banning trans healthcare, is firmly against trans inclusive spaces and perpetuates wrong and harmful stereotypes about the trans community to a larger audience that make brainless idiots, such as yourself, seek us out and harass/antagonize us, as you are doing right now. Therapy will help you actually like your life more than bullying random people who are already struggling ever will, Jan. I suggest you seek it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Rowling tried to put forward an image of being Hermione, when in reality she was more like Dolores Umbridge or Petunia Dursley, smugly gloating over the lives she's ruining. I really believe the fantastic beasts films died because of her bigotry, so there is some hope that the boycott is doing something to cut her income.
To be fair the fantastic beasts films were also not very good. The first was pretty and loud and enjoyable as long as you don't think about the plot for more than a minute. In the second they got way too heavy, mangled the plot, and drastically overestimated the draw of Johnny Depp. Joanne didn't help but the demise of that series was self inflicted.
@@quiestinliteriswas it through?! While people desmissed hermione,I never got the feeling she was ment to be wrong, just that its more complicated then just aggresivly sell pins
I cannot explain how passionately I feel about this subject! As an actor myself, I accept that I have a responsibility not only to myself but to others to not use my skills to line the pockets of people who constantly deny mine and many other’s queer existence and actively try to harm, remove healthcare from trans people. Actors should ONE HUNDRED PERCENT be held accountable when working with people who are problematic like this. There is no way to say “I’ll work with them and make them rich but I don’t have to agree with them!” And be a good person. No way at all. You cannot stand with the community and do something that ACTIVELY HARMS IT!! JKR is open about how she spends her money and how she funds anti-trans things.
i would probably have liked a reboot of HP if she who shall not be named was fully not profiting from it and also not involved, id also support them altering some of the story as she made some choices that where questionable at best
Cillian Murphy was great in Breakfast on Pluto. I know he's cis and so is the writer but it's so empathetic and both heartbreaking and heartwarming. It was published in 1998 and the film was 2006. Cillian Murphy doesn't tend to want to work with not excellent directors on not excellent scripts. I think he would have zero interest in any HP tat. Even when he was not famous, he was only in artistic stuff.
Never having been a Harry Potter fan has made my life as a travs person immensely easier. i never supported her to begin with because i think those books are hot garbage.
JK Rowling didn't hire Tennant. She didn't hire anybody. People are acting like she was the director of the movies. She made the characters. Did she have some control? Sure, but there are a thousand people between Tennant and Rowling
@@arahman56that is different and it’s bizarre that you need it explaining to you. The kids wouldn’t be famous or have any platform at all without her characters and stories. This is different to trying to say she directly hired them or anyone else
Wouldn't it be amazing if Jkr lost the rights to Harry Potter and the series was made with an entirely trans cast. Because personally I think that would be neat.
On one hand I feel bad that she's been abused in her life. On the other hand, "Wake up, ya crazy, you have a cause right there to put your wealth toward, leave trans people alone."
@@genericname2747 I think it speaks to her lack of character that she has felt the pain of abuse and then turns around and inflicts pain on someone with nothing to do with what happened to her.
@@genericname2747that’s not the way progressives usually use victim narratives though. Usually past events are completely used to excuse behaviour. There is clearly a line
I deeply deeply doubt Cillian Murphy would collaborate with a JKR involved project. He's quietly been a progressive and feminist for as long as I remember pretty much. And while I do agree the Breakfast On Pluto casting was retrospectively dodgy, he apparently researched the role by hanging out with transfemmes who were willing to teach him how to play the character more authentically. In an Irish context too, him doing that nearly 20 years ago was genuinely pretty impressive. We didn't legalise divorce or homosexuality til the late 90s, the last Magdalene Laundry only shut in 96, and abortion was damn near totally illegal til Repeal five years ago. Again like would have been far better for a trans woman to have that role. But in context, I can't imagine he took it for any malicious reason. I remember it being fairly scandalous when it was shown on RTÉ in like 2010 even!
I really feel that, all things considered, they should not have moved forward with this remake at all. I just hope all the children involved can stay safe and shielded from the hatred from ALL sides. (Bigots and the LGBTQ+ community alike. Just be aware that CHILDREN cannot make an informed consensual decision to work.)
Do you genuinely think the queer community is likely to direct hatred towards children? I’m not a fan of characterizing the issue here as an “equal-both-sides” thing, because that is just definitively not the case. Overwhelmingly, it is anti-trans and anti-queer bigots who commit mass hate filled harassment, including against children.
I always find it so disappointing when I see “ally’s” purchasing and encouraging others to purchase items that ACTIVELY FUND this woman and her hatred. IF YOU FUND IT, YOU ARE FUNDING THEIR HATRED!!
I enjoy the world, mostly due to nostalgia. I bought the game, if I had the chance to go to the HP studios in London, I would go. But I haven't seen the new movies, I don't buy merch or support her otherwise (even educate my family who is far from social media about the state of the situation). Would I be rather if the money did not go to her pockets? For sure. But SHE WILL NOT RUIN MY CHILDHOOD FOR ME.
@@MyBlackSheep I totally understand your point. My best friend has the same outlook. However, sadly, JKR has spoken outwardly that the money you pay for various HP things that are trademarked as HP and therefor go into her pocket, goes often toward her paying a lot in the way of anti-trans hate marches. She has admitted to donating a lot of money, (thousands) to push forward anti-trans bills. So she is using the money she gets from fans, to actively harm the trans and queer community. It isn’t fair and it isn’t your fault. However really sadly, the money you spend on HP merchandise is being used to fund anti-trans bills and propaganda around the UK and the US and gosh knows where else. Your money!! Which you have a right to be furious about! I totally understand you love the universe and it is your childhood and I’m not going to tell you what to do, I wouldn’t dream of it, but like Jamie said in the video, there are other ways to still enjoy your favs without actively funding this hateful woman to harm our community. It’s all about being mindful and aware. If you pay to support JKR, you may as well put your money straight into a far right, anti-trans donation bucket.
I find it so strange how I once really really identified as a Hufflepuff, and now, someone reminded me that it was still on my Facebook bio that I wrote 10 years ago and haven't looked at since. I just felt embarrassed and took it down. If J.K. Rowling really wants to know what her legacy has become, it's that. An embarrassment. I'm so outside of the fandom now I think I've only heard about this series once, and I actually just dismissed it as a hoax 😂 The idea of anyone supporting a new series at a time when she's behaving the way she is is just absurd to me.
I have my harry potter book collection displayed on a shelf between harry potter book ends (sorting hat and a pile of spellbooks) and for the past while I've been contemplating putting them away in a box because I don't support the author's tirade on transgender people. Plus, I re-read them about 5 months ago, and started realizing how poorly written they were (spelling mistakes, missing/assumed information, continuity problems, etc.) They've only existed so long on my display because it's one of the few physical book series I've finished.
As a trans guy and an actor very much struggling to get work… yeah no there’s still no way I’d agree to work on anything she profits from. It would have been child me’s dream come true, but no. I have had both top surgery and a potter tattoo, and I only regret one of them. Guess which lmao
Meanwhile I'm waiting for a decent Earthsea adaptation, or even a reboot of Chronicles of Prydaine as a tv series. So many better stories for young people that could be brought back into the public consciousness.
I recall the franchise being all the rage when I was in high school and I totally ignored it 🤣 I watched it when i was older solely because Alan Rickman was in it and I missed him. The very fact the person behind the franchise is directly against my friends and their rights to be them means it's left a sour taste in my mouth to say the least, so I tend to avoid everything to do with them and it's quite distressing the lengths she who shall not be named has gone to to push her TERF agenda.
I feel like an important point when it comes to avoiding/not participating in content that actively encourages discrimination, isn't even really about The Company or anything; It's the fact that you, as a person, will not avoid or take the minimal effort required to stand against the people who are being discriminatory. And if you won't stand up for trans people, gay people, people of colour, when your only Effort is "don't spend money on this non-essential thing", then how are we expected to trust that you'll be there for us when we are being discriminated against and you'd have to ACTUALLY do something? It's the difference between Lip Service Support and nothing deeper; and Actually Supporting and trying to care about people who are being actively oppressed.
I used to feel self concious and bad about never reading all of the books and finding them boring. Now, after J.K Rowling showing her true transfobic colours I don't feel bad about it anymore
1) An HP fan on Discord claimed they didn't believe JKR made transphobic statements cuz they had never seen them. (Sent them one of your videos.) 2) 'But there is no transphobia in the books!' I could make a very good argument that Umbridge is JKR's caricature of a trans woman.
Women like Umbridge, Rita Skeeter, aunt Marge and others that we are meant to not like are described as man-ish or with man-like qualities such as big hands or deep voice, women we are supposed to like are all stay at home wives/moms who often give up or reduce their careers for their family, including Mrs Weasley, Fleur, Tonks, and in the Epilogue Ginny.
@@chronicallykat4920 She's clearly not, tho. The characters see her as wrong (as they would) but the story presents her as being right the whole time. As a Jewish person (ethnically if no longer spiritually), I always saw the Goblins as a success story and an inspiration for the future equality of other non-human races. And I always felt it was obvious that Harry should have been more honest and straightforward with Griphook and that taking both Weasley's advices to not fully trust him and actively double-cross him actively led to Griphook turning on them at the end of the raid. Sadly, regardless of what the intention was at the time, the Joanne of today would absolutely say the Weasleys were correct and it disgusts me.

From the perspective of artists, the reason that you shouldn't work with transphobes is that, if you are an actor or public personality, your product is you. That's what you "sell". Any actor that chooses to work with people like Lady Voldemort is making that part of their product as they market themselves for future projects. People who sign on are most likely going to be people who are not actually allies or struggling or young actors or those who feel that their career is in a place where they can't turn things down, who may or may not realize that are tainting their brand. Any artist who thinks about working with ideological bigots should ask themselves if they'd rather work in the mainstream media or go make rapture movies with people like Kirk Cameron and Mel Gibson.
Wow. People who value diversity and not discriminating are "adult-children"? Shows who some people really are. I used to be a HUGE Harry Potter fan. Like I am autistic and HP was one of my special interests for years. But when JK Rowling came out with her transphobia...it ruined it all. HP was a comfort for me, something that brought me joy. But now all I can think of when I see HP stuff is how much its creator hates people like me and will actively vote, promote, hate and policies against people like me. And that sucks. The association is there for good.
The ironies of you saying that they are not "adult-children" on a video where people are actively saying they are so upset about something they are willing to childishly attack children and are wanting to see their careers harmed for taking on a role .. should not be lost on you
@@jannyjan90 there is a difference. Rowling is actively trying to do as much damage to the trans community as she can. She is hurting people. Not wanting to support that is not childish. The people who think like her are the same people who attack and murder people like us every day. It shouldn’t be controversial to not support that kind of hateful rhetoric.
Will watch later after work, but my main answer I usually give is of course you can still love the world of Harry Potter, I just suggest not buying things first hand, watching films in theatres, or going to the park. Instead buy second hand, buy fan works online or at conventions, read and write fanfiction. There are a lot of ways to still be a Potter fan and not give more money to JKR. Finally, while this isn’t a requirement, if you have any creative talent it is always nice to add queer elements to Harry Potter as well as other minority representation.
I loved the 'Trans Witches are Witches' bundle that became a huge thing when the game came out. A bunch of similar games that were magic-themed and made by LGBTQ+ creators were bundled together and sold for the same price as that AAA game, and instead of supporting Certified Transphobe JK Rowling™, you could support the very people she wanted to silence. So in short: Love Harry Potter, Partake in the fandom... and maybe buy merch/secondhand from LGBTQ+ sources. Nothing makes me happier than buying pins and such from people who ARE LGBTQ+ and supporting THEM than buying some mass-produced Rowling-supporting nonsense.
How is partaking in fandom not contributing to JK Rowling relevance? She loves attention and she doesn't care if the scarf you bought was second hand or from a trans person, she'll see you cosplaying Hermione and be glad that people are still letting the franchise live. (saying that as a former big HP fan). with how much racism sexism fatphobia and slavery apologism HP books carry, I really think that the nostalgia isn't enough to justify supporting it in any way (and making the HP hashtags trending, wearing merch, writing fanfictions - it still endorses her creations that are not separate from her)
I was quite satisfied when Netflix Australia removed the HP movie series from its platform as then JK wouldn't be getting the benefits. However, after several months, Netflix Australia has now put the whole movie franchise back up. Very sad to see when the platform carries so much diverse content involving the lgbt plus community, disabilities and so forth. I just don't get it.
I love how hopeful you speak towards the end - it's so important to hold on to that hope of betterness, and I do believe you are right: things will get better, we're just in a bad spot right now.
I'm curious how many Christians who condemned Harry Potter in the 90s are pro Harry Potter now, since Rowling has revealed she's a transphobe.
I still think hardcore Christians would knock it because of the "dark magic" and "witchcraft" people are wild

Gender taliban is the most biggotboomer thing I’ve heard in a while
THIS
the thing is cillian murphy is very publically pro-trans. he worked on a movie called breakfast on pluto (beautiful film) where he played a trans woman named kitten. he was very respectful during the film's promotion and even talked to drag queens about the role, when referring to kitten he always used she/her pronouns. trust me, hes a good man
Cillian Murphy is a very private man who does not use the internet in terms of social media and the like.
This. Tennant has HELPED so much with awareness and no nonsense anti bigot foghorning.
Yeah
He's a sound lad.
People also don't understand how impactful his role there is. Ireland had just decriminalised homosexuality in 1993 mind.

The woman who cried over losing to Imane also apologized and didnt want people to use her as an excuse to lie about and bash Imane
Rowling is such a "champion" for women in sports that she said absolutely nothing praising or bringing attention to the many amazing female athletes and their accomplishments during the Olympics, instead spending her effort on falsely putting someone else down.
David Tennant? Lol, yeah he is never taking part in any project JKR is involved in, the suggestion is hilarious really...

@SnowLily06 I believe he has MySpace
Very well said.
And as far as I know David Tennant has already distanced himself from his original roll as Barty Crouch jr.
He's been pretty outspoken about it. Love him.
Most of the major cast members chose to support LGBT people. Watson and Radcliffe have been outspoken about this.
There are plenty of other twinks he's been to make up for it, don't worry
That’s just my two cents on the matter as someone who knows far too much about him for his own good!
that's reassuring! you got anything specific where he was an ally, like something he said or did?
Your comment reminded me of an interview clip I've seen a few times, where the interviewer mentions something about memes and Cillian just stares blankly before saying, "what's a meme?" I envy this level of disconnect from the internet, we need to protect him at all costs.

And, considering this, it's no surprise the 2nd season wasn't as good as the first. The best parts of a three acter are almost always act 1 and 3. Also, it could've been better if there hadn't been budget cuts...
Edit: spelling
@@anthonyjames696 "The middle part is never good" isn't really a good excuse. The middle part absolutely SHOULD be good, and often it is. For example, I really think Catching Fire is the best Hunger Games movie. People usually love Two Towers, too. They could have made it good. It just wasn’t 😢
@@Miluriel They probably would've made it good hadn't they been so constructed by HBO. Like, have you seen how passionate everyone involved was about that show?

@@anthonyjames696 I'm sure there was some stuff going on. But sadly passionate actors don’t always make for a good show, and I think the writing was just dodgy. Unfortunately, I find Taika's stuff very hit and miss in general, so this might be a me problem :D
I kinda want this to happen now. It'd be a huge f you to jkr and maybe she'd grow up a bit and stop being a bigot.

HP had a special place in my heart throughout my childhood. Rowling has a special place in the bin for ruining all those happy memories.
Eh. My memories remain intact.
I‘ll never be able to read the books again, though. And I won’t introduce them to my kids, either. For shame. =/
I agree to that. Sort of sums it all up
Yeah... I bought the books a few years ago and I still have the last book to finish but yeah, I'm not spending a penny on anything Harry Potter related ever again.
The special place for me is edging the books closer to the heating mains line at my parents house and doing what always works eventually and waiting for the inevitable

They’re adults. If they’re that distraught over a children’s author disagreeing with them, they have personal issues they need to deal with rather than projecting that onto someone they’ve never met.

It's a real case of societal/mental whiplash seeing HP going from the franchise that conservative would rather di3 than see their children reading and being the subject of book burnings to "the author is now the beloved Golden Child of the anti-woke, conservative crowd".

I totally agree with questioning why we need more HP media content. I would love to see a screen adaptation of some other more interesting sci fi/fantasy series that hasn’t been done before.
Like everyone brings up the anti-Semitic goblins and the slavery-loving house elves, but little stuff like Harry gagging at Hagrid and the giant principle lady meeting up in the woods and talking romantically to eachother, as if the "ugly giants" falling in love is meant to be seen as gross by the audience (but their relationship is the only good one in the film lmao)
well said. What was wrong with Snape's characterization? I can't remember the books all that well.. it's been a minute.

It was planned years before she started going of the deep end, and now they're to far into construction to back out. As a trans woman, I love for the parks, the art and craftsmanship that went into the Wizarding World lands, but, the hurt she caused the trans community is always on my mind while I'm there. The team I was on was kind of a boy's club, and I ended up leaving when I learned they were discussing my private parts behind my back. But I think that was more the team and current political climate in Florida, not the company itself. Universal has been very vocal about supporting trans people, including covering ALL gender affirming care on team member insurance.
I'm still excited to visit the new land when it opens next year, but I won't be buying any merch, as I know JK gets a portion of those sales on top of her flat annual licensing fees. unpopular opinion but I dont think harry potter CAN be separated from JKR. Even if she wasnt profiting. it's FILLED with her bigotry from top to bottom. The goblins, werewolves as a metaphor for AIDS when the main guy who makes more werewolves does so unconsensually, naming the only black character SHACKLEbolt, Cho Chang, Rita Skeeter being framed as transfem and gross for it (or otherwise just being framed as being icky for being a masculine featured woman), and LOADS upon LOADS of fatphobia. It's bigotry all the way down.
and just so we're clear: I say this as someone who dressed up for the deathly hallows premiers and absolutely loved and immersed myself in the HP universe up until around 2018-2020. As an autistic, fat, trans person I just can't stand for it.
Homophobia as well, given that the only gay “representation” was a post-series statement about Dumbledore being in love with Grindelwald and “that’s why he did bad things in his youth.”

it won't be hard to not hatewatch when it will probably be awful. not even because it's harry Potter but because it's a modern adaptation and they just always suck for everything ever.
No hate watching and no hate talking about it. All discussions add to the noise which pushes people to watch out of curiosity. Just pretend it doesn't exist, even if you choose to pirate

As someone somewhat obsessed with Cillian Murphy the title of the video gave me a jump scare, but I just hope he's better than that.
Cillian obsessed as well. I raised an eyebrow when I heard about the fan cast. That man ain't doing no voldemort let's be for real
@@maxsync183 To her, trans women are not women. And they aren't. They're trans women. Nothing wrong with it, but let's start saying it like it is.
i like harry potter a lot, i think it's a shame that the name of the author has been tragically lost to time. we just have no way of knowing who they were unfortunately. we can assume, however, that they were a poorly cultured white man based off the misogyny and weird racism that is way too prevalent in the story
@@amagicalbeing7427
- Bouts of clumsy tying up various plot lines;
- Clumsy attempts to appear non-discriminatory whilst holding on to a load of British racial and cultural stereotypes;
- Sir Terry Pratchett didn't like JKR or the HP books (and he's my hero).
@@amagicalbeing7427 the signal adult black person is literally called kingsley shacklebolt and despite being (supposedly) incredibly qualified he spends the entire story doing absolutely fuck all except hyping up albus. i think this is really apparent after the death of dumbledore when alistair (mad eye) moody the big ol' white bloke who really should be in some kind of full time therapy after being locked in a box by a serial killer for a year becomes the leader of the order of the phoenix instead of kingsley who was no longer doing his bullshit hand wavy ministry job and is clearly more qualified and capable if you believe the author saying so without even attempting to back it up

And the Malfoys getting away scot-free just because they switched sides right at the last minute.
Thank you. It's nice to hear that other people see that issue as well. The stories are full of awful narratives that I cannot ignore.
Oh wow it really gets picked back up? That might be cool! :D
I completely forgot season 1 even existed, I was going to watch it, thanks! 😂
You do know that lots of actors are going to take roles in this series don’t you? By default ?

As long as you’re not giving her any money and actively not supporting her, you’re doing fine :)

You do not seek to understand other peoples positions or engage in conversations that could help break down the barriers between two groups
All this JKR hate started because the community refused to engage with legitimate concerns being raised about the affects this rapid pogression was having on women and famale spaces.
No!

I recall the franchise being all the rage when I was in high school and I totally ignored it 🤣 I watched it when i was older solely because Alan Rickman was in it and I missed him. I feel like an important point when it comes to avoiding/not participating in content that actively encourages discrimination, isn't even really about The Company or anything;
It's the fact that you, as a person, will not avoid or take the minimal effort required to stand against the people who are being discriminatory.

(Sent them one of your videos.)
2) 'But there is no transphobia in the books!' I could make a very good argument that Umbridge is JKR's caricature of a trans woman.
Rita Skeeter, too. Not to mention all of the problematic shit that is not directly transohobic-
Another good argument: Rita Skeeter was depicted with, among other things, "mannish hands" and a "heavy-jawed face" in the books.
Rita Skeeter even more. There are references in the books to Skeeter’s “mannish” hands, and her “square jaw”
I am unsure of who Rita is, as I have not read the books or watched the movies in a long time.

3:41 oh god I hope the child actors don’t get attacked on the internet for being in the show. Hopefully that won’t be the case
I missed this existing. Thank you
How is partaking in fandom not contributing to JK Rowling relevance? She loves attention and she doesn't care if the scarf you bought was second hand or from a trans person, she'll see you cosplaying Hermione and be glad that people are still letting the franchise live. (saying that as a former big HP fan). with how much racism sexism fatphobia and slavery apologism HP books carry, I really think that the nostalgia isn't enough to justify supporting it in any way (and making the HP hashtags trending, wearing merch, writing fanfictions - it still endorses her creations that are not separate from her)
