    • @katyungodly

      It also equates gay love to horrible things like lying, stealing, and killing. They're all "sins", so you holding hands or kissing the person you love for years is the same thing as murder, to these people.

    • @hypoaktivnaovca
      @hypoaktivnaovca 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +91

      Yeah, "hate the sin, not the sinner" doesn't really work when the "sin" is an identity, because in that case, hating one is equivalent to hating the other. That's really a problem of insisting that some identities are sins though. 🤔

    • @FrozEnbyWolf150
      @FrozEnbyWolf150 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

      The other issue is that "love the sinner, hate the sin" is found nowhere in the Bible. Throughout scripture, the sinner is very much equated with the sin, and punished accordingly. They just repeat the saying to make themselves feel better about believing that. At the end of the day, they still think being gay is "immoral" and will let that belief influence how they treat others.

    Speaking as a former fundie, the "hate the sin, love the sinner" attitude is a performative aspect of the "holier than thou" attitude. They get to condemn homosexuality as a sin while still claiming to love and support the person, of course part of this love is hoping that they will stop sinning in order to save their eternal soul. To be fair, it can feel very genuine when you are in the mindset. What could be more an act of love than saving someone from hell? Thankfully I grew up and got away from the bull, can only hope the younger people do the same.

    The problem with "I don't support but I love them" is that they clearly think LGBTQ identities are a choice. That's why they lump it in with beer, sex outside of marriage, etc. They think it's just another lifestyle choice, so their thought process is "I don't think people should do that, but I still love them even if they *choose* to". Being raised in a Christian family, I've been told the narrative that we should love gay people, but it's best for them if they *choose* to not have relationships.

    • @horrificabomination

      Well to them being closeted and repressing our queerness is what we should be doing. Being openly and "actively" queer is hurting no one - except their feelings and ego, which is their problem (not ours) as they're not the ones in the relationship or living in the meatsuit.
      Literally doesn't matter if it's a choice or not otherwise they'd go even harder in harassing bi/pan ppl or genderfluid ppl who *can* pick their gender, as it implies being queer is an undesirable/harmful option.

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      What's so stupid is that even if having an LGBTQ+ were a choice (which it isn't), there is still the whole "love thy neighbour" and "thou shalt not judge." Does that not mean loving the person whether you agree or not and not judging them because that ain't your job? Treat others as you would like to be treated, aka show them kindness and acceptance whether you understand them or not.

No. No right to harass ppl with that shit. They may have the ability if the person is dependent on stuck w them or if they live in a country where it's illegal to be queer. I'm ace, & I'll say genderqueer, what in the 90s we called "androgynous;" but IME, my friends who were closeted due to religion were miserable until they came out & started living authentically - that's when they were able to really live their lives, often only then figuring out what they wanted to do in life, and accomplishing it, etc. They're all SO much happier now, whether they remain Christian or not. If God doesn't want us harming ourselves, then evidently, God wants us to be out, not closeted, not in denial, and certainly not trying to be other than who we are!

I said that that means she does have a prejudice and she just said “oh, I guess I do”. A lot of times they think they're not prejudiced because they don't see their behavior towards individual people as discriminatory. What you pointed out to them is essentially that in privileging cishet relationships, they're measuring individuals by that standard rather than by the standard of what that person's reality actually is. People do this with race all the time, too. Essentially, if they were self-aware and honest, their "I'm not prejudiced" really means, "I let individual BIPOCs prove they're really white, & if they are, I'll accept their presence/tolerate them/befriend them [varies w/the whit person] but that outgroup they come from is unacceptable."

      Period. The correlation in my family between the level of religiosity and being hateful and judgmental towards others is a great example of this. The more religious family members are going around doing the most horrendous things to people(they are not even queer so it's not just queerphobia but hatred of anybody)that are around them like gossiping to their employer about a colleague that is supposed to be her friend and whom she knew had just lost her husband,became a single mother and had a sick mother to care for. Guess what she did? She was able to make that poor woman lose her job and she did that because she thought that that woman(reminder,they are supposed to be friends who go to religious meetings together)was distracted at work(i wonder why she is,maybe it's the grief of her husband and the burden of raising a child and taking care of a sick mom)so she thought that it would serve as a lesson to her(here comes the holier than thou,trying to show love and care Christian way of thinking)by making her lose her only source of income😃. I wish i was joking but this woman thinks she is going to heaven(and not us sinners who don't pray)because she prays five times a day and watches the mass and recites rosaries as often as she can while also going around ruining people's lives.

    Queer Christian with a theology degree here:
    If we want to look at why being queer ISN'T a sin, we need to do a few things, starting with the division of the Old and New Testaments.
    Jesus dies for our sin in the gospels, and fulfills the law. That's why we no longer have food laws, or laws about how to shave, or how to make appropriate sacrifices in the Temple. Laws in the Bible are divided into a few categories:
    1. Cleanliness
    These are our sacrifices and our hand washing rituals. We no longer follow them, as they were dealt with on the cross.
    2. Set Apart
    These are our instructions on what fabric to wear, what festivals to celebrate, sexual relationships, and how to cut our hair. We do not follow these, as they were paid for on the cross.
    3. Honour God
    These are our laws against blasphemy, and disrespect towards God. We do follow those, out of our love for God.
    4. Do not harm
    Do not murder, do not lie, do not commit adultery, give to the poor. We follow these laws, as they are moral issues that are not fulfilled in the cross.
    As same sex attraction doesn't fall into a harm or dishonouring category, we know it is okay.
    The context of the New Testament needs to be understood to deal with the times there it discusses same sex attraction. Namely, that it doesn't. It labels same sex intercourse.
    1. Same homosexual relationships were very often related to worship in the temple of Artemis. So, don't go to the temple.
    2. They were often between a man and a young boy, so obviously that wasn't okay.
    3. They were always unmarried, which wasn't allowed.
    Conclusion: Christians should support same sex couples, and encourage marriage between them, because it's literally just the sex outside of marriage that is a sin, and even then, that was mostly to lessen the spread of disease, so, take that as you will.
    God bless, and happy Pride! 😊

      I know this is one theological perspective that is very common in a lot of more progressive churches. But as a sorta queer (ace, genderqueer) person with theology degrees, I'm a little more heterodox. I don't believe Jesus died for anyone's sins; I don't see how that could be compatible with who we believe God to be & what Jesus said God is like. I believe Jesus was killed by Empire (as a "principality" or "power," i.e. an emergent property of human culture that seems to be bigger than the sum of us all).
      I also don't like contrasting the Hebrew & Christian testaments; I don't see a change in how God relates to the world, only a development of human thought for a particular group that emerged from Second Temple era Judaism. Sadly, once separated from its Jewish roots, Christianity pretty quickly aligned itself with Empire, and I think that's where so many of the harmful, toxic beliefs of Christian history came from. Those beliefs & practices are so clearly antithetical to what the Gospels and Acts try to show us with their repudiation of wealth & power in favor of radical inclusion into a covenanted community.

    In all instances I've encountered with this, especially having grown up in the church, "support" is akin to enabling. Being LGBT is seen as an illness or disorder, so they still "love" and "accept" you, since you can't help being afflicted with this terrible thing, and they'll pray for you to overcome your struggle. I've heard a lot that you can be LGBT, but it's sinful to act on it, "hate the sin, love the sinner". If you vote for equality and give access to resources for LGBT people, it's looked at like you're giving beer to an alcoholic. It should be discouraged and they just want to help you "get better".

      Pentecostal expressions of Christianity have a lot more to do with traditional religions than Pentecostals would ever want to recognize. All that demon talk is imported from other traditions & translated into Christian idioms. (I.e., the original traditional religions might reference spirits of ancestors or minor deities, which Christians would interpret as demons b/c that's the concept available to them in their religion.)
      This may not be what's going on here, but I just want to say certain cultural contexts will have different ways of interpreting reality than the typical Western, scientific template/lens would do. That's not to say I think it's all good; it's just I think there's more to it than psychosis or whatever, & we should remember how deeply enmeshed the Enlightenment was with white supremacy & colonialism & how much we need to deconstruct those elements of our own received tradition/way of seeing.

I’m not familiar with the new testament, so I can’t say anything about that, but Jews read what Christians call the Old Testament in its original language, Hebrew. So I can say for sure that in the untranslated original language it is rarely clear and often self-contradictory. I can only imagine how translation into other languages, most of the time not from Hebrew, must aggravate that, because all translations are interpretations

So i want to distance myself from those who are more comfortable with their homophobia and bigotry by saying i still love members of the LGBTQ+ community but dont support them." Its the halfway situation where they realize there is a problem but they havent yet connected all the dots on where the problem is. I remember in the 90's (i realize these types are still out there) there was a large group of guys going "Im not gay. I have relationships with women, but only sex with men. I am never going to date a man" And pretty much everyone outside that group is going, um okay call it what you want but its not str8 and its at least bi. They were just uncomfortable identifying with the LGBT comunity. Eventually most of them moved on and either said yes i am bi or gay or whatever or went the other way and said they prayed it away or what have you or just stuck with DL lifestyle such as it is.

    20:00 The interviewer is describing something that didn't happen. Essentially, he talks to conservative people as if he were conservative and uses "examples" that are meant to test their limits, in hopes they understand the views they hold are nonsensical. Really funny stuff, but also kinda sad sometimes with how some respond positively to messed up "examples" he gives.

    As a cis and straight Latter-day Saint (or Mormon) myself, the level of homophobia and other anti-lgbtq bigotry ingrained so deeply in my church and theology hurts me deeply. Cis heteronormativity is unfortunately firmly embedded in the official doctrine of the church in such a way that it can be very difficult to even conceive of a version of the teachings that would fully accept it, although there are theologians and other interested people (such as myself) who have been trying to develop queer-friendly Mormon theology. I expect that eventually the leadership will cave to the truth that being LGBTQ isn’t a sin, but I don’t know if it will happen soon enough for me to be able to ethically remain a member of the church community that I love. If it’s any consolation, lgbtq allyship has grown dramatically within the church over the past few years and I hope and pray that this trend will only continue. Thank you for this excellent video and discussion!

    As someone in the states, my thing I always say, if you'll vote in a way that removes rights or causes hardship for a group of people, you do not love them. You do not support them. You do not care about that person. Period. If you cared and loved someone you'd be morally consistent to ensure their well-being.

  • @sarajuvey

    So I grew up in a conservative Christian family and was sent to Christian school K-12. What is meant by "hate the sin, love the sinner," ie, "I don't support you/your lifestyle but I love/care about you" is absolutely a NEW development in this religion (new like within the past several decades). It came about when people, like you said, Jaime, started to be called out on "You're not loving your neighbor/being kind." So they still DO think you're sinning. They still DO think you're going to burn in hell for eternity. They still DO (although they won't say it out loud) think you are
    Bad for society
    Will hurt/badly influence their children
    Should not have government protection for your rights
    Should not be allowed to marry
    Should not be allowed to adopt children
    Should not be allowed to choose the pronouns that suit you if THEY think they are "wrong pronouns"
    They don't love you. They are internally disgusted by your very existence but they have the presence of mind to understand that in modern society that does not go over well. They also don't want to get arrested or face consequences for hate speech/hate crimes. They WILL vote against you having any rights and they WILL say it's for your own good because they love you.
