“And fought and died for your wee bit hill and glen” basically leads back to the Scottish independence wars around 1296, it essentially means that we battled for our own land that England were trying to claim as their own. If you look back at the history of Scotland you’ll see how we battled with England to claim our country as our own At the time, (proud) Edward was the king of England and was a tyrant, he wanted to claim the whole country as his own, but he also wanted to get rid of the Scot’s. The lyrics describe the victory of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, over Edward II, King of England, at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Owing to its historical basis in the Wars of Scottish independence, the song urges contemporary Scots to rise again as an independent nation and remember the day their ancestors deterred Edward's English invaders. Maybe the difference in reverence towards anthems has something to do with their place in the different societies. In the US I gather that the national anthem is used everywhere and might lose it's impact a bit. Here in Scotland (and the UK as a whole) the various anthems arent really used as much and their main use is at sporting events like this, it's rarer and one of the few places where people feel comfortable belting out the song like this.
I think we're loved no matter where we go. Win or lose the tartan army are here for the atmosphere and the good times. As a Scottish man, born and bred, i was embarrassed that independence didn’t happen. I love the UK, even England but i think we should be our own county. I'm over it now though. I just disregard all polics now and i feel the better for it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you sir is a embarrassment to Scotland and you are the kind of people who make us Scottish people a laughing stock am embarrassed to even say am Scottish because of the likes of this first of Scotland can go independent we have no money for a start
There's a clear message here... A wee bit hill and glen is worth dying over because it's oor wee bit of hill and glen... Could be argued it wasn't worth it...and yes.. probably not but it was ours...
Ironically, the Scottish Regiments were a huge part of the British Army during the wars of the British Empire. When Scots joined the army for economic reasons. Today about about a fifth of the Scots live and work in England.
How is this ironic. England and Scotland gave up their individual sovereign rights in 1707. However, unlike England, Scotland's population didn't agree to it. Which isn't a surprise, seeing at that time (the early 18th century) France & Scotland were threatening to invade England once and for all. England's politicians bribed Scotland's political representatives into what is now a hostage situation where Scots are denied their democratic right to choose their own political path.
Are you aware of the unofficial lines that weren't subtitled in that clip? After "and stood against them" there is clearly a two word bark from the crowd that isn't technically in the song (but almost always is in the song) and after "Proud Edward's army" there's also a two syllable word but not shouted by quite as many of the crowd.
@@tracymuckle8512 I think you might have misheard. As far as I know the unofficial line is " 'gainst who?" a contraction of "against who?" and the next bit is usually a derogatory term aimed at the "proud army" who fought (and lost) under Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

It's about kicking the English out of Scotland. The English talk about crushing "rebellious Scots" which has now been removed from the national Anthem.
The problem my friend is that your National anthem is played in every game weather in your American Football, Baseball, Basketball or anything on a daily basis, where we in the UK play our National Anthem's at major sporting events like in Football we in England play our National anthem in the League Cup Final, FA Cup Final or in an England Football Match weather home at Wembley Stadium, or away in another country, same goes for both Rugby Union and Rugby League. The only other times is in the presence of a member of the Royal Family at a ceremony or on Remembrance day at the Cenotaph in London. Our National Anthem is Rarely played that is why we sing our National anthem together with love, respect, with devotion and sing it very loudly together as one. You play your National Anthem too many times and far too often that is why some Americans don't sing it like we sing our National Anthem or the Scottish sing there's or the Welsh infact all countries in Europe sing theirs like us and infact the rest of the World. The American National anthem is the most well known one as everyone in the world has heard it more times than any American has heard anyother National anthem of any country in the world. With all due respect the American National Anthem becomes very boring and I suppose that is why many Americans who love there country and rightfully so, but have just become bored of it and just don't sing it. I love our National Anthem but I would love to see I VOW TO THEE become our New National Anthem. 💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦

It's the bagpipes that stir the people
If it wasn't for the pipes the crowd reaction wouldn't have been so vocal
if you listen at certain points you'll hear the crowed sing when there are no words that is the unofficial lyrics, first one is just after stood against them and we sing against who, then the second one is after king Edwards army we sing bastards
Maybe the difference in reverence towards anthems has something to do with their place in the different societies. In the US I gather that the national anthem is used everywhere and might lose it's impact a bit. Here in Scotland (and the UK as a whole) the various anthems arent really used as much and their main use is at sporting events like this, it's rarer and one of the few places where people feel comfortable belting out the song like this.
cheers fe scotland , aw ra best to ye
I think we're loved no matter where we go. Win or lose the tartan army are here for the atmosphere and the good times. We respect every country we visit and we're very passionate people 💪 we aw ken oor national teams shite but the troops will be there regardless singing. Unfortunately the same can't be said about our national neighbours 😏 but that's nothing new
Thanks mate. Andy McDonald Scotland

100% scotland needs out the so called union of unequal. Alba shaor 🏴🏴
@@saorsa5Why,we are all the same people, descended from the same people,we just speak differently ,I say keep the union
You'd think Scotland never invaded England. Ever. Think again.
Scotland the brave is our national anthem onward the braw
You should have a look at Tennessee Brando I have a feeling that you would appreciate him
Nice but I prefer Scotland The Brave or Scots Wha Hae. Slightly more bloodthirsty! 😀
Good but I think the Welsh tops it
I think Ireland's call is the best one
Superb sir. SAOR ALBA GU BRATH🔥🔥
@SuperPoodleboy Its "guess who" so we sing
"and stood against him
GUESS WHO
proud Edwards army
and sent him homeward tae think aagin"
@@tracymuckle8512 I think you might have misheard. As far as I know the unofficial line is " 'gainst who?" a contraction of "against who?" and the next bit is usually a derogatory term aimed at the "proud army" who fought (and lost) under Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
And stood against him *(against who?)*
Proud Edwards Army *(BASTARD!)*
@@SuperPoodleboy The reason I'm so certain is that I am Scottish so its a song I've sang more often than I can remember
Try listening to orange Lodge songs if you're a protestant .
Scotland history Tours visiting the Carolinas.?....nice kne sir...my Scottish cousins would like this ,maybe an Irish ,Welsh or English one next.or a Kiwi Haka..? cheers...😊😊😊😊...E....
A'reyt Eamonn. Have you seen Bruce's birthday trip next year? Looks amazing.
You have to hand it to the Scots. My county has as many folk as their country, but they make up for numbers with passion.
I always think England should use "Land of Hope and Glory" and the United Kingdom use the alternative.
@@alansmithee8831hello, sir, how goes it in the Danelaw..? ..was over the high peak visiting Sheffield not long ago...I hope you are keeping well...cheers...E...😊😊😊
It's about kicking the English out of Scotland. The English talk about crushing "rebellious Scots" which has now been removed from the national Anthem.
The corries
The only anthem in the entire world that still means something.. how is the seyshells brit free but not scotland 😂 fight the good fight... Saor alba ❤
As a Scot the national anthem at Hampden for football is better
