R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec Review - Does the R33 Deserve The Hate?

  • Continuing my week exploring the legendary Skyline GT-R's history, I am driving this R33. Brought in at the last minute to replace a car which had to drop out, this wasn't quite 100% ready but I am still eternally grateful to owner James for bringing it out.
    Of the three, it is the most modified and represents what many expect the Skyline to be - a tuner car. But, is it changed for the better?

    I definitely prefer the looks of the R33 compared to the R32.
    With regard to performance, totally apparent that the modifications do make a difference.
    It was generally accepted that the 33 - with the longer wheelbase - had the straight line stability whilst being not so nimble around the corners...... this being based upon stock settings and zero modifications.
    Anyway..... wtf would I know? lol. To get the true comparison...... all of the 32/33/34's would have to be driven as "fresh from the factory"..... which would be rather like asking me to fly to Jupiter 🤔😆.
    Great review. Big smiles here 👍👍

      i believe the R33 is the fastest of the bunch, and ironically the R34 is the slowest. The 32 was a pure drivers car for Grp A racing. The 33 was an attempt to improve it’s performance which ultimately resulted in the first production car to lap the nurburgring in under 8 mins. The 34 was designed to retain the performance of the 33 while being much more user friendly and easier to live with (which is why it’s the heaviest).

    • @KeenanStyles
      @KeenanStyles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@devandrasimanjuntak1646 the Nurburgring time is irrelevant as on so many circuits the BNR34 is proven to be the faster car and was even tested on its debut in 1999 on an autocross course against the BCNR33. It wasnt even a contest especially being a longer wheel base. The BNR34 is far from being the slowest of the GT-R generations. The slowest would be the KPGC110 as even the KPGC10 was faster. The BNR34 is not called a successor for no reason. Especially when it comes to the V-Spec II trim. With its added aero it is much faster than the BCNR33. The BNR34 has better gearing and a better transmission giving it the edge. The gearing on the BCNR33 is way too tall. Per the outcome below the smaller and more complex the circuit the slower it is than the BNR34. The Nurburgring is only a marketing point to sell more units and not a true test of superiority.

      Id disagree with paul, with a 90's motor like this, yes you may get more problems but of course modifed well, they can be quicker than the newer cars mentiond.
      They feel more special being so rare these days. In my opinion look better and of course they are a much more raw mechanical experience.
      And of course with a car like this you wont lose any money in depreciation like you would on a new car (you would have to be insane to buy a brand new car and take the depreciation hit imo) infact with a car like this it might even appreciate in price in your ownership.

Sounded nice, but in reality I found it about as fun to drive as I would have done driving a Mondeo. I eventually got shot of it and got a Z32 TT instead. Worlds apart, much more fun to drive.

    This might be controversial, but for me this is easily the best looking of the 3 and the 2nd best looking Skyline of them all. My profile picture makes my views on the best looking one pretty obvious! Sure it wasn't the game changer that the R32 was or the last of the great trilogy that the R34 was so it'll never have as much of a legendary status, but it's still a proper GT-R. Also this one sounds insane, bit too loud for my taste but it's a good sound.

    Great video. Most coilovers on these are either too harsh (or too old and in need of refresh) for uk roads. It’s also common for spring rates to Be mismatched. And many also require insane speed and commitment to display the traits they are famous for which is a bit daft on public roads. But all generations can feel special even at low speeds if set up well, as the 32 demonstrated. Thanks for these videos all the cars look great.

    The double edged sword that is 90's JDM cars. The fervid, nostalgic fondness vs the lunacy of current asking prices. I never thought I'd see the day where a 575M or 599 GTB could be bought for less than an R34 Skyline. And that's before I mention the Asda savings in the back pocket.

      Here in Japan you can buy a gate Murcie, 550 Maranello, and a McLaren 12C for the price of a BNR34. Some of the rarer cars are selling for more than the cost of a LFA

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same thing air-cooled Porsches did a few years before the JDM price surge (and E30 M3s to a lesser extent). I think some of them have "jumped the shark" and the prices are now only a reflection of the rarity and not of the actual driving experience, but when there are a limited number that is only shrinking because they're not produced anymore, and the amount of people that want one far exceed the amount available, that's what happens. Sigh.

    • @takenbystorm
      @takenbystorm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jsquared1013 Such a melancholic truth! I can't help but wonder where we'll end up next. Sport cars (in my youth) were many things to many people -form, function and finances. Those who could not afford an RX-7 (like myself), were fortunate to still have entry with an MX-5. The little brother to the big. Obviously they are of no comparison where top trumps is concerned, but with one exception. How they made you feel as a driver. And it was that passion above all else, to all enthusiasts. Sadly, that is no longer the case.

    It is definitely the most sedate looking of the 3, and when you consider most owners/enthusiasts are late 20's / early 30's, so they are usually looking for a more aggressively designed car. Whereas the sedate looking version allows you to enjoy yourself as you get older, without feeling slightly ridiculous like one might in a louder car.

    The R33 Series doesn't deserve any hate at all. Back in its days It made a lot of R32 owners (waiting to upgrade) and fanboys unhappy because it was so radically different from the outside, with its rounded shape and longer wheelbase. Nissan reverted a lot of that when releasing the R34 and gained a lot of former R32 owners back. It has a rightful place in the line of GTR heritage.

    That's a real shame. I said on yesterdays R32 video that it gave me a semi.... Unfortunately this car has made me limp again.
    Maybe with less crashy suspension and a more subtle exhaust it could be better. But that looks tiring to drive.
    Fingers crossed for R34.

    There isn't a Skyline I don't like, at least not from an exterior styling point of view. I've driven an R33 (an all-but standard V-Spec Nür) and moved an R34 around a bit (can't say I really "drove" the 34 as I was a car salesman at the time so I only ever really shunted it around the yard) the R33 is the car pretty much responsible for my Straight Six / Turbo addiction/fanboy-dom and to me the drive felt more akin to a grand tourer that was designed to be more accessible/affordable than it did a fully balls-out, fire-breathing, mental tuner car, but then as I say aside from some very minor bits and bobs, it was a standard car.
    The thing that really annoys me about Skylines, in fact I'd go as far as to say it's the single thing that would put me off ever buying one - the interiors! So horrendous!
    You can throw all the fancy Recaro seats, or whatever, in the world into them and they still might as well be a Primera inside!
    To compare to something like a Supra (because of the natural rivalry and yes, because I'm a Supra fanboy) you get much nicer standard seats, the increased possibility of leather and in the case of the MK4, a cockpit which feels much more like you're in a fully fledged sports car.
    Of course, the R35 GTR has a much nicer interior on the whole but, and again just in my opinion, it's WAY too busy in there and it just seems far too modern and like it's trying to compete with Ze Germans for my liking.
    Splendid video as always Jay 👍

    From design standpoint, somehow i like r33 more compared to the other two, first time i saw it was on tokyo drift, the scene on redlight where han was hooking up with some girls, I don't what about it but i feel like the car has a better line and a better proportion, the part that i like the most is the taillight which has symmetrical design with two round lights and a really nice stripes of light below, which also my biggest downside with r34 being two big round taillights that never really got me into liking it.
