Hi Dom! I have been listening to your music creations on Spotify. You have a great sense of balance so that all sounds can be heard clearly, which I think is missing in so much music today. I do have a suggestion, which of course is only my preference. In "Behind the Wall" I feel that Delido's voice should have a little less reverb and the volume should be slightly higher so she is brought forward in the mix. Her role is of more importance then everything else to some extent. The same in "Cosmic Parenthesis", as well as the guitar solo. Be well!
Thanks Dom. Great video. Gosh! I just could not get this working with my hardware unit. Using a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre into Cubase 12 Pro. I've missed something somewhere.

Thanks for this tutorial, very clear! I wish for a future update they could add a wet/dry mix knob for the return - helpful for if you want to add an external effects unit as an insert rather than send, but dial the mix to taste. Fingers crossed for Cubase13!

Great video. But I have an issue where the recorded audio (running via a hardware compressor) is ahead of time in an audible way. I have done the delay setting check and am using a single input and output from the same audio interface (Motu 828ES). Delay reported by the external effect process is 1.56ms. I am not sure what to do to get the audio back in time.
I have a DBX166, 2x 1176 Compressors (clones) and a ART Pro Vla II tube compressor hooked up to my AXR4 + ADAT. I also have a Nord Rack 2x Synth and KORG minilogue xd on the way :). The simple way to get those hardware boxes into Cubase is a breeze. I love it.
I switched from Digital Performer to Cubase Pro this year . I prefer Cubase’ s far more intuitive handling of external MIDI Instruments and external effects. I have all my outboard (Lexicon PCM81 & 91 , TC Reverb 4000, Bricasti System One and Drawmer Masterflow 2476) connected via AES to a MOTU 112D and it works flawlessly.
07:29 If I understand correctly, then the external fx works as a preset inside the track, but does not change the main output and input in the inspector tab (to be able to send it to the group track with plugins.)? For example I have 4 pieces of equipment that need to be rotated? For one channel I need: pre, eq, comp-1... and a little later for the 2nd channel one more comp-2 is added before comp-1 and the eq is removed. And where else does the microphone output go? Well, you will not switch it every time, the first unit of equipment in the circuit will be different.
Thanks for the video! I got an API Channel Strip as my first piece of outboard gear, but my Scarlett 2i2 doesn't have the I/O to accommodate inserts. Looks like I'll be upgrading soon!
Regarding the return gain: as far as I understand, it only reduces the gain inside cubase, like a simple gain plugin, doesn’t it? If the signal from your external processor is too hot, you still might need to reduce the input level of your audio interface to prevent possible clipping of the inputs.
Yeah, if it hits the actual converters too hot, there's nothing Cubase can do beyond turning down the clipped signal. Plenty of options for attenuation, though.
Hi Dom, huge fan of your channel! I have a question if you don't mind: I recently switched to a Mac Studio M2, and since then all my routing and external fx dont't work. ie: my Warm Audio bus comp receives signal from the DAW (the meter's needle moves) but can't route that signal back into cubase. The audio INs that should loop back to cubase don't work, I tried the same configuration and routing back to my old mac pro, and they work! I'm using Apogee Quartet + Clarett+8Pre in tandem as aggregate device, both cards with additional ADAT ins and outs from ASP880 units. I've been trying everything for 3 days now, if you or anyone reading this has suggestions....please help! :)
Anyone now hoe can I print only the Wet external FX signal? At this moment, with the render in place the dry and wet sginal are put together. I want to render only de resulted reverb on a track. Is the only way to to this is to route the return in to an physical audio input and record into another track?
Hi King of Cubase, I have two questions: Should I put my hardware delay 100% wet like in a Send FX with a plug in ? What if I want to send only a guitare (mono) and have a return stereo from my hardware delay ? Does Cubase send it only through the Left RCA output from my audio interface ? I hope my english isn't too bad too understand what I mean And thank you a lot for your work
Dear Dom, I found out that my UR 44 which I love, has reserved two of the 6 sendbus as FX Bus (UR FX Bus L and UR FX Bus R) . I need these channels to connect a pair of speakers and wanted to use then the outputs 1 and 2 from UR44, but I can’t change the FX into a normal sendbus. How can I do this? Please answer me , maybe this will be also interesting for other RR 44 users. Thank you Jerryl
Love your videos m8. It would be great if you could do a video about how you get the great width in your music. (is it a bit more than LCR maybe? :D ) Stay safe!
Can you please do a video for External actual synths, drum machines etc, because there is no way to ping for the delay like we can on effects module, I noticed you have all your keyboards connected, how do you ping them so that cubase adjusts for the latency, if you have a full studio with lot of keyboards etc, each instruments is going to have different latency when using Midi, no one has done video about this in Cubase, you can do it in Bitwig very easily.
well well well this looks like a dream BUT the 0 ms delay displayed is often WRONG !!! Cubase is just unable to ping correctly. I did the test with cubase 10 and my fireface ucx : it s obvious when you play the others tracks with the one where you did the hardware insert there s a big problem (and in this video you just hear the track alone.....) !!! I was a huge fan of cubase over 20 years. I was fed up with this problem which is a BIG ONE and recently tried on REAPER ; what a surprised, in the same configuration the ping is well done and delay compensated. At this occasion i discovered REAPER , and was so sad to haven t discovered it earlier....
Hey Dom, thanks for the instructions. I'm having a hard time here - I've followed all your directions. I cannot hear audio when the plugin is engaged. I thought maybe this could be many things in the chain but, I am seeing audio coming in, on 3/4 on my Universal audio (UI for the interface) for my Presonus Interface. What do you think could possibly be the issue?
Hi Dom! Is it possible to add internal plugins after the external plugin chain? For example, could you put a regular plugin after the Black Box Analogue plugin and how would that work? Thanks
I would like to see more about the steinberg audio interface you are using there is not much on youtube about it and I am considering getting it because of the specs and the silk integration.

Hi Dom, How do you get your render in place real-time export to have audio? Mine is muted (same when I try track export). Which limites me when I want to process through external FX and tweak them in real time to the music. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Dom, im using ur816c and preamp heritage ha73 eq, but when i connect In, Out to enternal fx, the signal is so bad, its look like the micro opposite to speaker, im testing on ur rt4 too, but not working, pls help me, thanks.
I would be surprised if people based on this video gets it going since things can be quite complicated in the control panel of the Interface in order to get it up and running. Dom since you are using RME. Can you show us how to set it up in the interface`? Thanks for great videos
What if we want to do it with our primary mic analog preamp? Also, do you think that it would be a bad idea to do this with a preamp? I was asking about this to some people in different groups online, and they thought I was insane because I wanted to be able to choose between analog and VST plugins for the Mic.
I do not see why that would be an issue because basically you would be treating it like a channel strip that people overpay for in the vst world. Likely you would get better results doing it that way.
Hi I've setup external FX in cubase 11. I do see audio is coming in on my hardware but no sound in cubase. I use saffire sound card. I also do this in logic and that's working fine. Can't find what the problem is in cubase. Is it the sound card setup?
Is this the same process if you want to setup eurorack effects as send/return? For some reason I thought I would be in the send/return columns instead of a plugin.
Could you compare the MR816csx Channel Strip Morphing with the BBE882i Sonic Maximizer? Are they both a compressor and EQ combination. Why does the Channel Strip sound so good? Thanks!
hey dom, thanks for this great video!! I have one question: is it normal that my DSP display increases significantly when I load the external plugin as an insert? Thanks and Regards

And how can the return gain help, because i thought that this comes after the converters? So when i adjust that, it doesn't make the overloading unhappen?
Bro can you please help? I am trying to use mono insert with hardware compressor and eq in pro tools with my lynx hilo, is this not possible ? Not in pro tools nor in cubase? I bought the hilo because i read that it has two inputs and two outputs available that work independantly. Please help
andro here from Sydney Australia, I was wondering if you might be able to help me, I have loaded a session from another user on Cubase 12 still here And I’ve lost settings I’ve customized in my set up One which is a big deal I use a lot of external hardware 64 in 64 out with external effects compressors, EQs etc I lost all the connections It’s such a pain to have to do this again simply because I am loading a project not done on my main machine Now I’m really worried to load someone’s material in the fear of losing settings.. the worst part is you can’t save it as a preset in the connections for external effects Is there a work around or something in the settings so that if I load something it won’t load anything but the project ? Thanks a lot
great! I use different external gears but actually I need to use BOSS RC-202 Loop Station as external gear in Cubase 10.5 to loop some of my VST instruments parts I play with midi controller. Is it the same settings u've shown in this video also for this type of gear, the Boss Rc202? Thanks a lot for your videos! cheers
One Question: I have a section called: Stereo effect Loop. There is just one send and one return. Doi need a Y-plug? My Audio Interface has Mono ins and outs its the"Focusrite Lquid Saffire 56" i hope somone can help me.
I'm trying to record my midi instrument in my midi guitar, but only can play the strings D, G, B and E. Why? I want to play the whole chords in the guitar.
Hi Dom, thanks for another great tutorial. I'm using analogue SSL EQ and compressor as outboard gear. I'm familiar with all connections and how to use it as a plugin. But when I click for delay compensation it also shows 0.0ms, is it possible? Cables are quite long (2 metres) and no delay? It showed only ones 5ms delay (long time ago and I never changed the cables or anything) , but after that everytime when I click it shows 0.0ms. Thought that there was some problem, but you also had 0.0. How's that possible that there is no delay?
Hi Dom, does this work as a send effect on an fx track? The problem with the insert is that it can only be used in one track at once. Are there any different settings needed in the audio interface control panel? I found it quite fiddly to get things set up properly as an insert on the AXR4T. I’m guessing if this works, the hardware would need to return 100% wet? I’m trying to hook in my new Strymon BigSky!
Just to answer my own question as I've finally worked it out! Yes, this can be done and it's working great. One thing to do on the Strymon was to change the config and in the Dry Signal settings, switch this to kill mode (avoids double monitoring of the dry signal), I then set the the mix to 100% and can then adjust send levels from my tracks like a normal FX track send. The AXR4T control panel changes all seemed a bit of hit and miss, but I think I've done the got it working sensibly with Control Room and the FX tracks. * I muted all inputs on all pairs of outputs as these are monitored through Cubase anyway. * On each pair of outputs, I set the equivalent actuall output to 0db and muted the other pairs of DAW outputs. (so when I switch monitors in control room, I only get to hear through one set) * I made sure in the output section, that the FX send channel is not muted and set to 0db I saved this as a preset called Cubase and this seems to work great when in cubase. I can add an instrument or audio track and then add an FX Send to the BigSky and I get to hear the reverb Outside of Cubase, If i switch the mixer to view settings for the FX Output. I can unmute any of inputs that I want to monitor with BigSky effects. I then just need to unmute the BigSky FX return input on the Output settings for the speakers I'm using. The key thing seems to be to avoid turning up the FX return on the FX Output, for obvious reasons :) I think what made this more complicated was that I was trying to do this with some dodgy wiring in my patch bay. This video was really useful th-cam.com/video/0SR35r9uWnk/w-d-xo.html having all my devices that output a signal on the top, made it much easier to work out what was flowing where :)
Hi Dom..so your Portico is the preamp right? I have UAD 6176 and would like to use it as external effects on Antelope Orion Synergy Core. So basically, the setup is the same only I need to select mono? UAD 6176 only has one input and one output though.
Yes, just use it as a mini external effect! Make sure you only add it to mono channels otherwise one channel is not going to be processed when in stereo :)
Do you always run to external plugins in stereo or can you run out in mono. What problems can arise if treating one channel at a time should you only have single channel outboard hardware?
Question, when i go to use my outboard gear Pro VLA II compressor say on a kick drum, my interface shows it's clipping. I have the gain turned all the down on the interface channel I'm using. If I use the the sliders as you did here to remove the clipping, I lose to much volume and can't here the nice low end when put back in the full mix. How do I correct that issue? Or should I not worry about it as long as it sounds good, even with the clipping interface? Thank you Dom Andy Tullis
Hi Andy! This sounds to me like a level mismatch issue. If you bypass the compressor (hardware bypass) does it still show clipping? Most of the times professional equipment required a +4 balanced connection level (compared to -10dbV) so you might be mismatching on the way in (compressor sends +4dbu and your input is set at -10). If this is the case this should be remedied first for sure. As a rule, I would avoid clipping the converters unless you know what you’re doing :)
@@DomSigalas give you an update, switching to -10dbv helped a little. But what i found was that I had changed out the tubes in my compressor but I never did a proper re-balancing of them. So I used the test tone plugin in cubase to achieve a -12db line and that gave me the proper headroom. Thank you again for pointing me in a direction. Andy Tullis

Simple and master peace technique 🔥🔥🔥💪
Hey Dom, thank you for this tip..!!
Congratulation, your videos have an amazing quality..
Anyone now hoe can I print only the Wet external FX signal? At this moment, with the render in place the dry and wet sginal are put together. I want to render only de resulted reverb on a track. Is the only way to to this is to route the return in to an physical audio input and record into another track?
Hi King of Cubase,
I have two questions:
Should I put my hardware delay 100% wet like in a Send FX with a plug in ?
What if I want to send only a guitare (mono) and have a return stereo from my hardware delay ? Does Cubase send it only through the Left RCA output from my audio interface ?
I hope my english isn't too bad too understand what I mean
And thank you a lot for your work
Dear Dom, I found out that my UR 44 which I love, has reserved two of the 6 sendbus as FX Bus (UR FX Bus L and UR FX Bus R) . I need these channels to connect a pair of speakers and wanted to use then the outputs 1 and 2 from UR44, but I can’t change the FX into a normal sendbus. How can I do this? Please answer me , maybe this will be also interesting for other RR 44 users. Thank you Jerryl
This was soo helpful . More of this and how to route with cabels also 👍👍🤘🤘
Love your videos m8.
It would be great if you could do a video about how you get the great width in your music. (is it a bit more than LCR maybe? :D )
Stay safe!
Thanks
Please am using presonus 16.0.2 mixer, and I want to be using it to mix on cubase
I would like to see more about the steinberg audio interface you are using there is not much on youtube about it and I am considering getting it because of the specs and the silk integration.
Hey Edward, what would you like to know? :)
@@DomSigalas How much space does it use when recording at the highest settings also the sound of the converters without your...other ad/da running...and some real life silk examples
@@edwardbrands3271 Aaaah at 384khz/32bit files are pretty large. For me the most important thing is the Silks- I have the actual neve unit and they sound really REALLY close. I've done some recordings of it on the Steinberg Interfaces channel (recorded a band and a string quartet maybe you can check them out to check the sound quality :)
@@DomSigalas Than you
Hi Dom, How do you get your render in place real-time export to have audio? Mine is muted (same when I try track export). Which limites me when I want to process through external FX and tweak them in real time to the music. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
In Cubase I have a volt 76 an a 7721 vca comp it only playing out of one speaker when I export it over can you help me with this
If you freeze the track can u keep the sound of the gear and use the same gear to other track at the same time?
Exactly! I do this all the time. But I don’t freeze, use render-in-place :)
@@DomSigalas if i use render in place i will have 2 tracks with the same content and if i use freeze i have just one track and every time i want to change something from the hardware i just unfreeze. which is better method to use ?
@@mimikoss Definitely Render In Place for me :) Cubase automatically mutes the rendered event so you don't have to worry. If you want to save even more ram and space what I do is I deactivate the channel above and if I am sure I am not going to use it anymore I hide it too. All these things you can do by right clicking on the channel ;)
Hi Dom, Is this the only way? Just to be clear in my head, Do you have to add it as a insert or send? Thanks a million.
How youdo you have sound when you rendering in place? Do you use control room? Is it possible to have sound at rendering in place without control room? i think i had it but suddenly
I only has two columns in the connection setting. Input and output. Is it different in cubase 11 ?
Is this the same process if you want to setup eurorack effects as send/return? For some reason I thought I would be in the send/return columns instead of a plugin.
Could you compare the MR816csx Channel Strip Morphing with the BBE882i Sonic Maximizer? Are they both a compressor and EQ combination. Why does the Channel Strip sound so good? Thanks!
Can i send a mono signal into a spx 90 and print the stereo fx ? The spx has stereo outs but i cant print it in stereo
Is it possible to set up a comfort reverb on an external unit but not print the reverb?
hey dom, thanks for this great video!! I have one question: is it normal that my DSP display increases significantly when I load the external plugin as an insert? Thanks and Regards
You’re amazing!!!
I don't understand how you could have NO delay to compensate for. Isn't some small amount of delay inescapable when using an outboard effect?
Great video thx; can this also be done in Cubase Elements?
i am having a problem with latency on the return dont know whats going on im following you step by step but still having latency ...i have a motu 8 pre es and an apollo twin and its doing it with both please help ...i bought all thios analog gear and hate to just stay in the box ...please help
Thank you for this informative video :) I have one question: If I have
very much gain on the outboard output, then it would overload my
converters in the interface right? And how can the return gain help,
because i thought that this comes after the converters? So when i adjust
that, it doesn't make the overloading unhappen?
When using hardware as inserts does it capture and process it during exporting ? Or its better to capture and print back into the DAW?
Bro can you please help? I am trying to use mono insert with hardware compressor and eq in pro tools with my lynx hilo, is this not possible ? Not in pro tools nor in cubase? I bought the hilo because i read that it has two inputs and two outputs available that work independantly. Please help
I have one issue with Cubase. I can open the vst effect but its not working. Can you help me with this?
Thank you, Dom for your video and congratulations for the new super AMAZING dancing song! You're fantastic composer! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Hi Dom, is it possible that these external effects then spikes my permormance meter in cubase?
andro here from Sydney Australia, I was wondering if you might be able to help me, I have loaded a session from another user on Cubase 12 still here
And I’ve lost settings I’ve customized in my set up
One which is a big deal I use a lot of external hardware 64 in 64 out with external effects compressors, EQs etc
I lost all the connections
It’s such a pain to have to do this again simply because I am loading a project not done on my main machine
Now I’m really worried to load someone’s material in the fear of losing settings.. the worst part is you can’t save it as a preset in the connections for external effects
Is there a work around or something in the settings so that if I load something it won’t load anything but the project ?
Thanks a lot
Am I right in thinking that you master in Cubase instead of Wavelab? Mulling Cubase currently as a Reaper user.
another great video Dom! Can i ask what the controller is on the left hand side of your computer keyboard?
Why? I want to play the whole chords in the guitar.
is there a difference (like more simple) to use an effect track with the external processing - like in the gred ondo video?
Hi Dom, thanks for another great tutorial. I'm using analogue SSL EQ and compressor as outboard gear. I'm familiar with all connections and how to use it as a plugin. But when I click for delay compensation it also shows 0.0ms, is it possible? Cables are quite long (2 metres) and no delay? It showed only ones 5ms delay (long time ago and I never changed the cables or anything) , but after that everytime when I click it shows 0.0ms. Thought that there was some problem, but you also had 0.0. How's that possible that there is no delay?
i have the same problem. Ive read somewhere that there is a bug . my copressor 1 time showed .0,06 delay. but its not doing it anymore.
(so when I switch monitors in control room, I only get to hear through one set)
* I made sure in the output section, that the FX send channel is not muted and set to 0db
I saved this as a preset called Cubase and this seems to work great when in cubase. I can add an instrument or audio track and then add an FX Send to the BigSky and I get to hear the reverb
Outside of Cubase, If i switch the mixer to view settings for the FX Output. I can unmute any of inputs that I want to monitor with BigSky effects. I then just need to unmute the BigSky FX return input on the Output settings for the speakers I'm using.
The key thing seems to be to avoid turning up the FX return on the FX Output, for obvious reasons :)
I think what made this more complicated was that I was trying to do this with some dodgy wiring in my patch bay. This video was really useful th-cam.com/video/0SR35r9uWnk/w-d-xo.html having all my devices that output a signal on the top, made it much easier to work out what was flowing where :)
Behind The Wall single is amazing SUPERRRR!!!!!!
Dom Who is the performer of this song?
Hello Dom! How are you? :) What do you expect from Cubase 11 and what new features would you like to see? Take care of yourself! :)
Wait, how did you get rid of all your latency?? If you explained in the video, let me know.
Do you always run to external plugins in stereo or can you run out in mono. What problems can arise if treating one channel at a time should you only have single channel outboard hardware?
i think my interface is stopping this or im an idiot i use a prism titan and cant seem to get it to work, any interface should right with 8 out and in
how to mimic this in elements version or even artist version ? :/
Thank you Dom
Andy Tullis
@@DomSigalas thank you, on the back of the VLA II it has a -10/+4 switch, I'll try switching it. 🙂 Thank you again!
@@DomSigalas give you an update, switching to -10dbv helped a little. But what i found was that I had changed out the tubes in my compressor but I never did a proper re-balancing of them. So I used the test tone plugin in cubase to achieve a -12db line and that gave me the proper headroom. Thank you again for pointing me in a direction.

clear explanation ...thanx
Hello Dom. Thank you for the video , I have the same audio interface... :). I own the Fireface UFX too, a powerful tool, the only thing that I change of this is the power supply that is Brocken after 9 years.
I wanna ask you please about the external unites that are you using for the mastering chain. Thank you
Hay Dom love your videos man I recently upgraded from Cubase 5 to Cubase 11, absolutely loving 11. I have a question, I own an MPC One and Komplete Kontrol S49 MK 2 as my controller/ digital instrument, so the question is, when I open Cubase 11 and then open up the MPC 64 bit software within as an instrument It won't let me record the sample i chopped on the mpc to cubase i know im missing a trick somewhere any help would be greatly appreciated. One Love from Ireland
Cool,I can set up Ableton Live as an effect.
Hi Don, I do not see an ADAT input on the HG2… how did you connect the RME and the HG2 then? Are you using an intermediary interface? Sorry for such a ridiculous question :)
Hi Eddy, I am using another converter connected to ADAT (Lynx Hilo) and this does the digital to analogue conversion :)
@@DomSigalas thank you so much Don
