Simply and straight forward explained. And you are of the few ones that have understood that the DAW should be empty when demonstrating one specific feature. In YT videos very often the DAW is so crowded in the outset that this much stuff gets in the way of the thing being demonstrated. Good work!
Thank you for being the saviour on this topic- I am in Africa and after searching for a month, I found your page to explain me from A to Z...Mama Mia...Thank you and I subscribed to you already.
Thank you. Out of all the videos you are the most explanatory. Oddly enough every time i update Cubase i have the same memory lapse and relearn this. My kids say I'm old, I say eccentric. Cheers.
Thank you this is so good . I randomly picked your video out of the list not realising you were using the Roland GR-09 , I was looking to connect my Roland GR-30 and Roland MT-100 . Nice work
I am looking for this Tutorial for many years, I also posed the question in different courses nobody understands why I asking this, now I have the answer Thank you very much, I am so thankful for this Tutorial 😀
(Coupled with Korg's inability to write a solid midi driver) I hadn't managed to connect my new minilogue up to Cubase. This sorted it out so clearly. Thanks!
Cool, thanks so much for this! After searching a bunch of TH-cam videos, your vid describes the exact Cubase Pro information I was looking for. Considering, how popular hardware synths/drum machines still are, all DAW manufacturers should really have this type of information as an absolutely 100% essential Quick Guide!!! Call me old-fashioned, but they should bring back the option to buy a proper printed, language-specific manual, along with a smaller companion tutorial guide. It's so much easier flipping between a bunch of physical bookmarks/chapters so that you can solve a very specific problem. I find doing this on an iPad/Kindle with PDFs a major pain in the arse, lol.
Hi Rob. Glad you found it useful. I'm planning (in the distance) a book of all these kind of things, pretty much covering what you've said. But it is a _lot_ of work to do, so I think I know why manufacturers don't do them!
Excellent refresher for me mate ! Returning to Cubase, clean Windows 11 install, upgrade to 13 Pro. There’s a lot to go through, everything downloaded…all VST and other goodies, XLN Addictive Keys, Groove Agent 5…Yamaha PSR SX900 patched, create templates next
The best thing you've done on this is tell us the version of Cubase you can do this in. My biggest complaint as a budget Cubase Elements owner is that there are so many tutorials that don't go tell the audience what Cubase versions a thing can be done in. I love the tutorials on this channel and would love them more if I didn't have to figure out if my Cubase version has the feature used in the video. This is partly on Steinburg's door too as I would like a more comprehensive feature set list for each version but that's just "woe is me" stuff from a cheap hobby producer.
Thanks - the issue often is that it's a moving target as well - often features that are (say) not in Artist 10 would be in Artist 11. I try to check the feature table, but it's not always explicit, and I only have access to Pro, Artist and Elements so I'll try in future to check which versions anything I put out works in.
Agreed about how helpful the info about the version of cubase the video is relevant for. Question, is there a way to record external instruments into Cubase Elements. I have a Yamaha MX which I can record using MIDI. I recently got a Behringer Model D and wamt to know if I can record that into Cubase using elements. Elements tutorials would be awesome 😂
@@MrAbeck1 Yes, that is possible. I use Cubase Elements too. It’s actually pretty simple. Create a midi track and an audio track to record the audio from the synth. I use a fairly basic audio interface in combination with a mixer. Setup is like this: Line out from synth goes into an input on a mixer, stereo master out of the mixer goes into the inputs of the audio interface. With this setup you can manage multiple synths but only record one at a time. Ideally a multi-input audio interface would make the setup a bit cleaner. With Cubase Elements you get a fairly decent amount of Audio and Midi tracks to work with.
after doing what you explained here & creating my external hardware synth I have a problem , the External Instrument doesn't appear in the insert new instrument track i don't find them, why ?
Hi sir, thank for your information. i use the sh-201 by usb cable and focuscrite solo gen 3. It’s hard for me to select output (external instrument), it’s duplicate with the main output section. Please, help me to connect and use sh201 like a analog !
I think you should be able to use the SH-201 with your setup. You'd need to connect it via USB for the MIDI, use the Focusrite for the audio, and then select the focusrite *input* as the connection for the SH-201 (audio output). You may need to disconnect them as the audio inputs in the input tabs to allow you to do this - I'd probably run it in mono, and connect that to input 2 of the focusrite, and then you'll still have input 1 (mic) that you can use at the same time. Doing this sort of stuff with limited audio I/O is always a bit challenging, alas. It's one of the reasons to get a multi-input audio interface as then you can just dedicate an input to it and always use it that way. HTH.
How youdo you have sound when you rendering in place? Do you use control room? Is it possible to have sound at rendering in place without control room? i think i had it but suddenly
Render in place works without the control room, but it needs a real-time recording to work with an external instrument. I'll make sure i put it into a render in place video that's in the pipeline.
@@musictechtuition i know that. I am doing like this but for an unknown reason as all cubases silly bugs, it stops to hear the recording at realtime. Also when you renderde in place, the channel tuns to solo mode automatically just for the rendering. Now this function is gone
I noticed this was three years ago. I have Cubase elements 12 running and have just bought a Roland Juno DS 66 key keyboard. I am assuming, hopefully that I can run 16 different sounds on different tracks in my Cubase like I used to back in the 90s with a basic Cubase program and a Roland JV 30. Thank you
You can do, but I don't think that Elements 12 has external instruments? (Comparison chart is not helpful on this topic). You can still send 16 different MIDI tracks on 16 different channels to the Juno DS as it uses General MIDI 2, and I'm sure you'll be able to access all the other sounds via MIDI as well (I've just had a quick look at the manuals and it looks like a bit of reading will be needed to get all this working from Cubase). You can then just route that back to Cubase as audio if you want to work further with it.
They're saved in an XML file in your Cubase Preferences directory - /Users//Library/Preferences/Cubase 11/ on macOS, and C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 11\ on Windows, but I'm not sure how transportable they will be - there are references in there for the input and output connections that are long GUID-like strings, and I'd think if you move them you'll have to do all the connections again on the destination machine anyway - I've never tried it though!
Good stuff mate ! Can I daisy chain 2 MIDI devices using the same procedure as you've described ? I've got my Yamaha SX900 + Yamaha P515 digital piano. Would it work, MIDI out from instrument 1 -> MIDI in on instrument 2, then different MIDI channel numbers on each instrument. SX900 is already configured with patch list, makes it easy to do program change from Cubase. Should find a patch list for P515 as well.
Yes, providing that the first device does a MIDI through, I think you should be OK (although I've not actually tested it) once they're set up to only use a single channel.
@@musictechtuition Unfortunately no THR, just read it somewhere. Need through so signal goes forward to next instrument. I’ve got two of those Steinberg UR22, each one has MIDI out/in, so basically one port. I probable need an interface with more ports. I’ll check in user manual, if I can configure through the menus the MIDI, so it actually becomes a THR. Good luck 🤞🏻 building !
I've got the same foam thingies under my studio monitors. I've got them the other way, facing slightly up :) Should they face slightly down, like yours ?
I think it all depends on your position. Mine are angled down to point at me, but they come with wedges that would allow flat or upwards inclination. Most studios I've worked in have had the speakers slightly above the listener with them angled down, and I think that will help with standing reflections a bit (parallel would be worse, I think), but it's such a complex area that there will be thirty opinions on every aspect!
Good to hear it. The MSB/LSB used to be handled with Patch Scripts, which saved a lot of fuss. It's been a *long* time since I've done anything with that (probably nearly 20 years!!!), but you should be able to get up and running with it using the MIDI Device Manager and a script. Roland has a page to generate one for the JV1010 here - www.rolandus.com/psb/

However, I'm an old school synth player and would sure like to connect one of my external keyboards to Cubase and be able to record. But cannot find any information ANYWHERE about how to accomplish this. Is it even possible?? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Rick. When you say "connect", do you mean via MIDI (so that you can use the synth keyboard to play virtual instruments in Cubase), or via audio (so you can reocrd the sound of the keyboard if it has any)?
I want to connect to use and record the keyboard. I’ve got a desktop synth that I operate via the keyboard (controller). I imagine the connection to be: keyboard controller>Volca Fm>interface>computer/Cubase...right??
@@research-and-development You'd typically want to connect the MIDI keyboard to the computer (so it can record the MIDI directly), and then have the computer MIDI out to the Volca. Hi, maybe I imagined this this but Im pretty sure i seen it somewhere. Is there a new feature in 11 that allows you to build an editor for an external instrument? For example a moog sub 37 has an editor built by moog, that works like a vst in cubase. I know cubase has had a feature for a long time, where you assign CC controls to sliders etc in some midi feature( cant remember the name of it) . Was this updated to have newer graphics and features etc or am i going mad? Cheers
I think you may be thinking of what was a feature mentioned in the leaked Cubase 11 info that was shared before 11 came out. There was to be a feature for creating generic MIDI remotes (such as for control surfaces), but that didn't make it into the final version. There is the provision for making graphical MIDI controls (and that was the extra complication I was referring to in the video), but it seems to work a lot better for straight MIDI tracks than for External MIDI Instruments.
The part no one’s ever talks about is how delay changes depending on your buffer settings. This topic is under covered and will drive you nuts. It IS an issue. You will have to adjust your delay for each synth to render the audio in time. And this delay WILL change if you change your interface buffer. This needs to be talked about and would be great if Cubase could automatically recalculate the delay when you change the buffer.
