These Eastern areas originally were added to Ukraine district during Soviet time; at that time it made no difference because they were all within Soviet control. But when most esp. western Ukraine wanted independence, they should have returned these areas to Russia. But chaotic Russia at that time was too weak to demand and they didn't expected Ukraine would betrayed them and wanted to join the hostile NATO later. When in 2014 a group of people in capital Kyiv supposedly under CIA help overthrew the legally elected President Y, many Russian descendents/residents objected to the revolution and didn't go to vote for the new president. The new president P should have treated these people better to win back their heart. But alas he did the opposite and revenged; he started shelling and hurting these people in these areas, 15000 residents killed during these 7-8 years! Some asked Russia for help. Putin had tried persuasion with Ukraine for the past 6-7 years but without success. So this is result. Who started first?
Does it look like the Russians actually care about these areas? They are destroying them completely. The move on Ukraine wasn't about the Donbas. It was about pushing Russia's border all the way to Poland. That went really well, didn't it? ;-)

This is a completely needless as well as avoidable conflict. What makes me really angry is that it is really a proxy war between the United States and Russia, with Ukraine serving as the battlefield and providing the boots on the ground. A retired U.S. diplomat put it succinctly when he said "the United States is fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian. What I find really tragic is that the Ukrainian troops are really fighting and dying for the United States and they probably don't know it as Zelensky has taken complete control of the media in Ukraine.
