The Model S could be considered to be one of the most significant cars of this century. Tesla came from almost nowhere to create a car that made electric vehicles truly desirable. The Model S answered every criticism - it was fast, could go hundreds of miles without stopping, could be charged quickly, had more space than rivals and looked pretty good too.
It sparked a true revolution back in 2014, but does it make a good used buy now? Tom Ford finds out.

Bought a 2013 S85 from Tesla in 2015. It’s been the best car we’ve ever owned. My wife loves the smooth ride and large storage capacity. Not a squeak or rattle after 8.5 years and 145000km. Still chargers to 95% original range and supercharges at 90kW peak like it did when new.

Great review and agree with most of it. As mentioned in other comments the free supercharging is for the life of the car. I have owned a 2015 model S for three years now. I commute twice a month from Bournemouth to Luxembourg. A 1000 mile round trip. Clocked up around 70000 miles in the three years almost cost free apart from tyres. The lane assist type autopilot is perfectly adequate for my needs and makes for an extremely relaxing drive. My previous car was a Mercedes CL63 AMG, nice ride but cost around £800 per month in fuel, I had to pull into the services to change audiobooks/CDs and it finally cost me over £3000 following a breakdown which was a broken fan belt which took out a load of other parts. No comparison 👍

I had a reservation about 2 years ago for the M3 and because of continuous delays, I was suggested to look at a used Model S on the Tesla site. I found a 2016 75 for about the same price as discussed in the video. Mine has Enhanced Autopilot, premium interior with the nice alcantara on the dash, sliding sunroof and premium sound. I was lucky as well that mine was the Melbourne dealership service car with about 12000km on it. So officially I’m the first owner. Also good to know is that Tesla Australia locks their service cars in Chill mode 😀, so the chances of being thrashed is minimal. I was also fortunate to get 4 years 80kkm warranty on the car and the remainder of 8 years on the drivetrain. I had a few issues. Door handles, noisy boot strut, noisy front suspension, 12v died too. But everything was done under warranty either at home or at the dealership. Best part is that I’ve got free supercharging as well, although it’s been throttled back a bit now. My final advice it to always buy from Tesla, or if you must, a legit EV dealership like Richard Symons.

In the US, the current prices of used Model S’, as of June 2022, are outrageous! I bought the “cheapest” used 2017 Model S 100D, 70k miles with Full Self Driving, Premium, unlimited connectivity, etc. for $58k + dealer fees + tax (65k in total). Still needed the MCU2 upgrade. The rest is, well, absolutely brilliant! Is it worth it? Considering the current cost of 92 Octane at $5.50 in the Midwest of the US, the cost difference to drive my BMW X4 for 50 miles, vs the Model S, is approx. $9.50. The X4, at 24 mpg and just shy of $11 for that distance, compares to the charging cost of the Model S at $1.24 (per TeslaFi) for the same distance. Wear and tear, deferred maintenance cost, etc. and the Tesla is the clear winner on the cost side of things. We won’t talk about amortization, though. I hope to have the Model S for the next..well…200k miles for the expense to even remotely make sense.

The biggest lifting happened between 2014 and 2015. Before that, it's probably not a good idea - terrible seats, no autopilot, generally bad quality, and questionable reliability. But the 2015-2016 era is also perfectly fine. It's the same car, just different looks and fewer cameras (which doesn't change much in Europe).

Tesla ranger came to me to replace 12v battery. No fixes otherwise. I upgraded my S 2015 MMC unit though original MMC was OK awaiting recall fix. Upgrade made driving it better since screen response is notably quicker. If car needs serious service, it's still likely to be worth fixing if it can be done right. Especially true if compared to 10 year old luxury ICEVs.

Just to clarify about the free supercharging......I bought my Model S second hand and the free supercharging passed onto me via the car. If I ever sell it privately, the new owner will benefit from the free supercharging. However, if I was to part exchange it via Tesla, then they would remove the free supercharging from the car before selling it onwards. This means privately traded Model S cars up to 2017 will maintain the benefit and the value. I save £6,000 a year against a petrol equivalent.

Meh, it's well and good if you can afford to buy used direct from Tesla but most will rely on used sales from private sellers or auto trader. One major thing you didn't cover fully was the battery and drive unit warranty. If I was to buy a used model S from a private seller which has done over 150,000 miles and is over 8 years old and 6 months later the battery fails or the drive unit that is gonna be a major blow. The price to sort it out would cost more than the purchase price if the car was around 35k to 25k. Tesla don't offer their own extended battery and drive unit warranty on their cars either after 150k miles or 8 years which ever comes first. This will be a big problem in the coming years no one will wanna risk buying an expensive electric car out of warranty when the battery or drive unit fails, it's not like they can pop down to the local mechanic and have a cheap new battery installed. I will wait until the model S drops even more in price or wait the 8 years on the older ones and or wait for third party insurance companies where you can take out an extended warranty on the battery and drive train unit for peace of mind.

There is no service schedule on EV's, even the brakes rarely need changing as they don't get used often (Tesla have a rust removing option). So, no, in general all EV's have little service cost outside tires. Fixing is the expensive part like with all luxury cars, but now the problems are ironed out (door handles for the S), if you can afford to insure it you can afford to fix it.

Not quite correct about free supercharging - if the car has not been sold second-hand by Tesla the 'for life' does stay with the car. But some sellers might be mistakenly listing free when it isn't
The other thing you need to check is whether it has been an insurance write-off. Tesla can remove any Supercharging facility from cars that have not been repaired by them at any time.
