You guys need to catch up on your reading... suggesting that people don't know the history of Ribble when it is you who have missed something.... Ribble have been around since 1887... They did not used to be a groupset website.. they started as a legit bike shop.. and have a long history that started before your grandfathers were riding tricycles.. Sorry.. it has to be said.. Otherwise keep it up lads.. love your work

More than 30 years ago, long before the internet, Ribble used to take out a double page of small ads in Cycling Weekly. Their mail order catalogue was extensive and they used to sell nice steel framesets at a time when a Raleigh 531 steel frameset cost around £400. Around 1991 or 1992 I bought a Ribble frameset in Reynolds 653 for £235. It had a Terry Dolan decal on the top tube. At that time Dolan was a renowned builder of steel frames, building for Cougar as well. I think he did frames for Boardman at a time when Boardman was a top amateur time trialist. I still have that frameset. I stripped it down a few years ago and got a respray. I ride it, with 105 downtube levers, at least once a week from April to September. Still a lovely bike to ride.

      @Nosh_Feratu ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes indeedy, Terry Dolan used to make Chris Boardman framesets that he would compete with. They were pretty local to eachother as I remember.
I think the mass produced Dolan stuff is probably a bit meh, but his frames for CB were high level.

I took delivery of a Ribble CGR last year and on the whole a fantastic everyday go almost anywhere bike. The selling point was being able to customise the spec to a huge extent. There were some very minor niggles that got resovled quickly through their customer service and resulted in a free set of tyres. I like that they have a few showrooms so it's possible to see what you will get, however all the sales and service is done online and if there is an issue then the bike might have to go back to the factory in Preston meaning weeks without a bike. On the whole though I would recommend them.

  • @BruceWalkerPhotography

I didn't know much about Ribble's history either and had no knowledge of them until last year, but I have been riding their CGR "enthusiast" SRAM Rival model in Reynolds 725 for a year, and am about to receive a Ti version of their Gravel Enthusiast model with a SRAM electronic groupset in a day or two.
I live in Canada and I realize that support falls entirely on me once shipped, but the value prop is so good with Ribble bikes that I chose to go the import route over buying local. What I have gotten from them so far has way more value to me for the money than any Big Name from a bike shop that I could find. Even including shipping (which ain't cheap!).
I am not a cycling expert, and I ride mainly for fitness, but my Ribble 1x11 steel bike pleases me enormously with every ride, so yeah, I'd agree with your "underrated" assessment.
Ribble apparently has history all the way back to 1897, so they aren't just a former website for groupsets. 🙂

I own an Ultra SLR 'deathtrap' as you both have coined it. It's a great bike, high spec and for a relatively low value when compared to it's big name alternatives. The only time the steering lock has ever posed an issue for me is when I trackstand at traffic lights. I've never fallen off because of this, but it will only ever impede you if you're riding at walking pace. I would say my main gripe is the durability of some of the level branded components (freehub failed after 10 months of ownership) and the saddle clamp on the seatpost, Ultra owners will understand what I mean about the clamp, it's terrible!

    I have a specialized, 3 scotts, 2 Ribbles and a Giant (I know, I have a problem).
The Ribbles are the CGR AL and R872 and I would recommend neither. The frames are poor quality and heavy, poor quality paint and not very well designed. They do give you good spec and finishing kit for the money though.
The giant is the best bike by far, quality frame, good price, upgrade the wheels and you’ve got a great bike.
Scott and Specialized are both decent.

I was looking at Ribble for a long time, but what put me off was the option of only orange or bright blue and the custom colour option being outrageously more expensive and the wait time went from 6 weeks to 8 months after Id ordered it. I like that it's a British bike brand, based near Preston and their showrooms are really nice. I wouldn't ever like to see them disappear like Forme did. Ive opted for the new Cube attain range, awesome build quality, great parts, unbelievable paint job and cables routed through the tube for less than 1K (upgrading from decathlon)

    • @BruceWalkerPhotography

That's always going to be an issue with direct-to-consumer. The trade off is you either fix it yourself (what I do) or take it to a bike shop for a mechanic to do.

Like MFI furniture before Ikea blew them away (even the relatively random supply of bits and pieces in the Ikea box was preferable to MFI). On supplied items breaking, I've had that from various otherwise reputable suppliers: A Falcon Eddy Merckx from Sid Standen's in Beeston, Nottingham around 1976 snapped the right crank when I put some effort on a small slope - just missed being hit by a car right behind me; double bevel sliding mitre saws from Evolution and Erbauer had to go back the moment I described the problems I found. Instant replacements of part, refund, product and I'll tolerate the supplier. Messing about with delivery and then with customer support is inexcusable to me.
I was in the Ribble store at Bluewater a few days ago. They only have bikes, not parts, lights, clothes. The bikes look just what I want (even, need) - AllRoad especially. But there's that niggle about past experience and reputation - like with Evolution and Erbauer power tools

Re the steering talked about in video this is really not an issue once riding and does not cause any problems as never need to turn that sharp (small frame toe overlap a greater limiting factor). Other aero bikes and most mountain bikes also have steering locks now.

I was looking at a new Ribble cgr sl. Really like how you can customise the spec so it works out pretty good value as you don't have to immediately change stuff. I have two Ribbles a CGR and an R872, both with 105 groupset, all faultless over the last four years of ownership, my wife has just ordered a CGE ALe as her knees are starting to suffer a bit, when you bear in mind the groupsets are are all the same no matter what brand you buy, the only real differences are in the frames, build quality has been spot on on ours so I don't really see any difference between my ribble or my Cube or my Specialized, my CGR is my go to bike for long weekends as the geometry is more realxed but otherwise my Specialized and my R872 both with 105 have very little in difference except the price!

CGR SL carbon frameset owner here since late 2020. Just because it was the only frameset I could get within one month from order and it came with BSA68 BB, which was a bonus. Quality wise, nothing special, BB finish is very bad (paint), caliper mounts were bad (but that is almost given on any Branded low end frame) needed facing, a lot. Internal routing is not the best, headset lower bearing seat wall thickness is really thin in one spot. But it was “cheap” and I use it all year around and it is great, the stiffness and compliance is quite good for the money. I would recommend, but it is not in anyway a Dream bike material… Probably more like a cheap workhorse which is not inherently bad in any way. ✌️

@@paddyotoole2058 I’m wasn’t claiming they aren’t reliable or good to ride - it’s just the welding on the example I was shown wasn’t finished very well, especially on the rear stays. If you’re thinking of replacing your bike Ribble are currently selling the GCR AL for only £999 which is something of a bargain. 👍

Damn. So can’t get a Ribble because they’re uncool elite cyclists will look down at me. I can’t get a Triban or Boardman because people call it a Walmart bike. Canyon is always out of stock. Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale are overpriced. Rose and Cube bikes are cool but don’t sell in the US. What’s left in the under €2,000 market?

Sorry but this shows just how naive you guys are. Ribble are pretty local to me and I've been buying bits from them for over 20 years. Never thought about buying one of their bikes though... until recently.

Ribble imho lost their way - like you mentioned they don’t want to be like Planet X; so they went high end with carbon frames mass produced in China. That’s ok but at the prices of the higher end you’d expect great QC.. huh.

i don't like this format on the channel, because the dude on the right always seems to talk about topics he absolutely has no clue about.
(rest of the channel is dope) ;)

Every single modern bike made today is seriously overpriced!
My Colnago CRS has a worse paint job than my On One Free Ranger! For the price, they're all shit!

Instead of talking so much BS, why don't you actually try a good Ribble bike and review it.
