  • Arranged in D major where the violin plays the role of Lakmé and the cello plays the role of Mallika.
The opera Lakmé by Leo Delibes is a French-ified tragic love story between the daughter of a Hindu priest and a British military officer, in the late 1800s. Note: the name "Lakmé" is the French version of "Lakshmi", the name of an actual Hindu goddess, as well the name of the priest's daughter. Also, Hindus were forced to practice their religion in secret due to British colonisation.(Google)
Imagine a scene where Lakmé (violin) and one of her servants, Mallika (cello) are picking flowers near a lush, blue-green riverbank one morning, singing this exact song.
    Cheers to Birraj Singh Taneja
for playing the piano parts with utmost brilliance in such a short notice.
