NOTE: It might be worth seeing the TNG S6 episode SECOND CHANCES before watching DEFIANT (DS9 S3, Ep. 9). Doing so has advantages and drawbacks (either ruined surprises or greater emotional resonance), so it might be best to run a poll on whether you ought to.

Alan Oppenheimer, aka Captain Keogh, is an accomplished actor and voice actor most famous as the voice of Skeletor in the 1980s cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This was his second appearance in Star Trek, his first being Koroth, the Klingon cleric in TNG's "Rightful Heir." Yeah, so the Jem'Hadar charging Sisko without shooting his gun? He was under orders to let Sisko get away with Eris. He let himself get killed in order to get Eris planted in the Alpha Quadrant as a spy, or disinformation agent, or who knows what else. And the Jem'Hadar were willing to kamikaze the Odyssey just to make a point, too. Those are some fanatical soldiers. There's a clear technological superiority going on, as well, being able to walk through the containment field on DS9 and their weapons passing straight through the Odyssey's shields like they weren't even there. We haven't seen this kind of carnage on DS9 since the pilot episode where we saw the Borg wreck Starfleet at Wolf 359. Everything about this episode screams: the Dominion are a Borg-level threat.

At the start of that season, he was basically a tiny little boy, and now he's practically taller than most of the other cast members!! Reminds me of my own adolescence! And Quark is the WORST person ever to bring on a camping trip!!! XD Also, I love the combo of Sisko and Quark trapped in a weird situation together! Super fun!
And yeah, shit's about to get REAL. The Dominion are NOT fucking around, and they're definitely the greatest threat the Alpha Quadrant has faced since the Borg! The scene of a Jem'Hadar kamikaze'ing into the Odyssey shows both that the Jem'Hadar are willing to go to insane, fanatical lengths to accomplish their goals, and that the Federation are NOT prepared to deal with them!!!

For those familiar with Greek mythology, the name "Eris" should be a clue that the character is not to be trusted. Eris (or Discord, as the Romans called her) is the goddess whose nature and mission is to stir up trouble between people. The most famous story about her is that, in order to take vengeance for a past perceived slight, she arranges for Paris of Troy to judge which of three goddesses is the most beautiful; and she does this in full awareness that the outcome of this contest will lead to the Trojan war.

Okay, as a rule, the federation and other factions use the term starship forever spaceship. However, they do use military destination for ships when needed.
For example In the next generation era an Excelsior class starship is a Cruiser, an Ambassador class statship, which was what the Enterprise C was is a heavy cruiser, and a Galaxy class like the Enterprise D or the Odyssey Is more like battleships.
A Galaxy class starship has over a 1000 people on board. That's the main crew and civilian. The Odyssey transferred its civilian population and non-essential personnel to DS9 before they went to the gamma quadrant. It was only after the loss of the Enterprise D that they stopped putting civilians on starships.
Also, the warmhole isn't in dominion space. They'll prove that in future episodes
As for your earlier question about the DMZ. It has both Cardassian and Federation colonies all over the zone, and they're so intermingled that.
You could find 2 cardassian colonies neighbors to 2 federation colonies. starfleet vessels and cardashian military vessels are not allowed inside the zone. That treaty that Jim'Hadar mentioned pretty much set up the demilitarized zone..

This is the episode that literally changed everything. It shocked Star Trek fandom to its core when the Odyssey went down so easily. Not since "I am Locutus of Borg," did we feel as stunned.
The creators intentionally chose a Galaxy Class Starship to destroy to echo the Enterprise D, which was still in service. So it could just as easily have been Picard and crew that died. This is when DS9 went legit.

The Galaxy class starship was the height of Starfleet engineering and the prime example of not only the strength of the Federation but their philosophy in who they thought they were.
Then the Borg came and Wolf 359 happened and shook the Federation to its core.
Now it's five years later and The Federation/Starfleet has still not recovered... but at least, for good or for bad, within that time they have begun to accept they need to make changes in how they do things and started to do so.
That's one of the things that makes this series so great. I've always loved Star Trek for its "message", there will be a future and it will be good...humanity will not only survive, we will excel! Great! Spend time showing the positivity of this! Be inspirational!
But sometimes you _need_ to have your beliefs tested. It's all well and good to have lofty ideals when everything is easy. But what happens to those ideals when you are put through the wringer? Stressed beyond imagination? Taken to extremes? What good are these ideals if you only have them in fair weather? See what it takes to hold on to them when taken to the limit. See what you have then when you come out the other side.
Not every Trek series should be DS9 but also not every Trek series should be TNG. It's incredible we get to have both!
Having a show like DS9 can validate a show like TNG and even TOS and DS9 sure as anything *needs* the shining beacons of TNG and TOS to light their way through it all.
Star Trek can be such an amazing franchise!!!

That the USS Odyssey belonged to the same class of ship as the Enterprise-D, commanded by a levelheaded and experienced Captain who could very well have been a Classmate of Picard was no coincidence.

It’s incredibly effective staging: the the flagship model Galaxy speaks to Stafleet’s naval doctrine “threat nuetralization, not force projection”, and why reliance on crazy powerful shields has built in liabilities and failings… zero agility and more exposure than defensive system coverage (despite what contrivances are written into ‘Picard’ season 3)

If picard had been there he would have requested hailing frequencies first and tried to talk them down which ultimately could have made the enterprise d fair even worse or be destroyed even sooner. Its so cool you get to binge this and then make reaction content.. In our day when these first came out, we not only had to wait each week for the next episode (anyone remember those TV days...?), but here in Australia, there was no public network that showed them on a reliable basis, and so we had to wait until they were released on VHS tape, once per fortnight. Each fortnight we would go up to blockbuster and buy the latest release of a DS9 or Voyager tape, and we would watch those two episodes again and again, until the next fortnightly release. Then we bought them all again on DVD...etc. Even when Foxtel came, they didnt have Trek at first. So youre really lucky, and we are lucky we can watch these anytime we want.

@@TheNoiseySpectator so - I will assume this isnt a joke question - but this was what Americans know as Fox. Ya know - Rupert Murdoch - our local boy - sorry about that. Literally here from Adelaide. It was Australias first cable subscription service that arrived in the early late 1990's 2000's. It was expensive and very slow to be subscribed to. They promoted it as being able to have hundreds of channels - but most were rubbish and didnt have what we wanted - ie: high demand syndicated series that cost money. ANd much of what was available to the US and UK market was just not available in AUstralia. Foxtel promised to be the answer to that -but they turned out to be rubbish too. When we first subscribed in 2006, the subs were $70 per month, which was more than telephone and basic internet at the time. SO Aussies got used to buying huge collections of DVD's rather than miss out on what they wanted to watch, and not pay for what they didnt want to watch. Ppl got sick of free to air and foxtel didnt really deliver on the high demand series - so we all resorted to buying huge DVD collections. Even now Australia doesnt have the full range of streaming services and whats available in the UK is not avail here on the same channel - acorn being a prime example. Drives us nuts. The only platform that equalised TV viewing Australia with the rest of the worlld was Netflix. Now in the last couple of years lots of other channels have become available - but no one TV is programmed to take them all. We cant get Disney, but our son can. We also cant get Acorn or BBC channels. It just sucks the whole TV world. SO much of what the US watches all the time has never been shown here and if it is - its on channels not everyone can access. Its just bollocks. sorry. rant over!

    23:00 So The De-Militarized Zone
The following is all from "in-show" information. I am excluding comics, books, games, "beta canon" and anything not at DS9 season 2 or VGR season 1.
In the 2330s, there was a military coup on Cardassia - and a quasi-fascistic military dictatorship took over. It is still in power to this day.
In the 2350s the Cardassian Empire / Union and the United Federation of Planets had a conflict. It has been described as "The Skirmishes", "The Border Wars" and "The War". Given the size and strength we see of the Federation and Cardassians in TNG and DS9, it seems that whilst the conflict was *relatively* minor - meaning the UFP were not trying to invade Cardassia Prime and the Cardassians were (presumably) just after a couple of systems here and there for resources - they were never a direct threat to the Federation itself. But to those taking part in the conflict, especially something called "The Setlik III Massacre" - referenced many times in TNG and DS9 - it was hell.
Apparently the Cardassians were kind of brutal - using underhanded techniques etc. Very violent. Fake surrenders etc.
Anyway by the time TNG itself starts (2363) they've been at peace a few years.
The Peace Treaty - the thing the Maquis and Colonists are up in arms about - the whole situation is as follows:
The Cardassians and Federation have made an agreement where by they are swapping various systems (territory) with the other. This is for . Geopolitical. Territorial. Whatever.
Some of these planets have colonies on them - on both sides. Both sets of colonists were warned not to settle there but they did anyway. Now some have been there 10 years etc - built lives and families.
Now, the IMPLICATION is that on the Federation side, "our" guys are just annoying 'freedom' libertarian types - they went out and want to make a home in the wilderness / on the frontier -- but that for the Cardassians, they are purposefully putting Cardassian settlements on disputed planets (even after the treaty) and are then funding them with weapons. The hope is these "redneck cardassians with phasers" will drive out the "hippy doo-gooders" of the federation.
The Cardassian government is funding the cardassians using proxies and inter-mediaries -- whereas the Federation isn't supporting the Maquis themselves, but CLEARLY senior members of starfleet ARE defecting or using influence to divert phasers and torpedoes to the federation settlers - see Commander Hudson -- or in Voyager, Commander Chakotay. Or in TNG, Ro Laren etc.
remember Cardassia being fascist and all that? Well this is why - they always need an enemy, a THEM. Previously it was the Bajorans but now they beat them back (sorry, the Cardassian "withdrew") they have a new "THEM" - The Maquis. So it's useful for them to keep the whole charade going - with the Federation holding its d--k in its hands in the interests of keeping the peace.
The DMZ is a place where neither the Cardassians or the Federation can send in ships, weapons, supplies. It's a blockaded area, basically. There can be incursions by a party but it must be agreed by both sides and usually with an escort. It's to prevent a delicate situation where a Navy ship may have to fire on its own citizens to protect an enemy - or worse, fail or delay to protect an "enemy" civilian ship whilst "protecting" their own side's terrorists ships... etc. The risks are too great someone will get trigger happy or enraged at the wrong moment and ignite a conflict.
    ------------
The main Cardassian Empire / Union presence in the area is Gul Evek - he's the dude who keeps showing up. He seems to be in charge of "the Border".
The Starfleet counterpart is Alynna Nechayev, the badass admiral who is always technically right.
DS9 is involved sometimes cos Bajor (the Wormhole) is near Cardassian space.
The Enterprise in TNG is involved a number of times because in season 5 it seems the Enterprise was assigned to the area and Picard's line manager was also Alynna Nechayev. Since Picard fell under Nechayev, he was the one who set Sisko up at the start of the series. He's the middle management for the Cardassian border.
This is why the Cardassians kidnapped him to torture him for information on starfleet battle plans in TNG's Chain of Command.
Sisko's line manager changes from Alynna Nechayev to Admiral Chakotay at some point in season 3 I believe.
In this episode, the Cardassians are trying to frame O'Brien to make it look like he (Starfleet) is directly supporting The Maquis - which will give the Cardassians an excuse to enter the zone and "investigate". And by "investigate" I mean start orbital bombardment of ex Federation colonies. Starfleet will respond in one of two ways - completely ceding the territory, or a war. And the Cardassians know the Federation will NOT start a war - hence if they pull this off, they gain all they ever wanted and more.
    Does that help?

I hope DS9's first look at the Dominion was everything you hoped it would be. I'm a little late to your channel, but when I saw not only that you're reacting to DS9 (my favorite Trek show), and also that you just met the Jem'Hadar for the first time, I knew I had to subscribe to catch your reactions to the whole show! And a lot of stuff that might seem weird makes more sense in hindsight. The Jem'Hadar tried to beat SIsko with their guns rather than shoot because they had to put on a good show so that it wouldn't look like they let Eris get away. And sending on of their ships on a suicide run... That means that they have the ability to send that kind of message without losing much. Maybe this wasn't one of their tougher ships, or maybe they just have a whole lot of them, or maybe someone else in the Dominion told them to do it? It's an effective message, all the same, doing a kamikaze run on a ship that could very well have been the Enterprise if things had been a bit different. Also, Eris... That's the name of the Greek Goddess of Discord, famously responsible for starting the Trojan War, if I recall correctly. Regardless, I hope you enjoy what is yet to come. All I'll say is what you've already been told: You have no idea what's begun here! ~_^

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Both serve as effective anti-Federations. They're multi-species, highly advanced factions, that operate on very different philosophies. The Borg assimilate through technological means, continually adapting to and conquering everyone around them in order to become better, but making use of everyone and everything they assimilate, and everyone becomes an interchangeable cog in the machine. The Dominion appropriately enough dominates, through force, and has a rigidly hierarchical system of who does what job and who must obey who. The Federation is trying to simply convince their neighbors to join them peacefully, and they follow a philosophy taken from the Vulcans, of infinite diversity in infinite combinations. They're okay with letting all the various species kind of do their own thing and maintain their own separate and unique cultures, as long as they agree to some basic principles of not imposing their will on others. For all the talk of the Federation being space socialism, it's much more like libertarianism: they follow the Non-Aggression Principle and people aren't forced to contribute in any way to the collective good. There's no space taxes. The Borg are a better analogy for socialism in practice; everyone gets a job assigned to them and everyone must provide for the community with the output of their labor. And the Dominion are definitely fascist, with its cult-like worship of its leaders and unyielding focus on doing whatever the state requires.

As for "Star Ship" vs "Star Cruiser"
There is a bit of ambiguity in the meanings here. The literal words don't have much difference. Ship implies any vessel while Cruiser literally just means a vessel that can "Cruise" or travel about with consistent speed and power. However, Cruiser is typically a term used to denote Warships. Cruisers are typically - though, not specifically - ships of the line with an emphasis on Speed and Firepower over other aspects like Armor. The Galaxy Class has, in some situations, been called a Battleship. At the time it was put into mass service, it is the largest and most heavily armed and armored ship in Starfleet. However, Galaxies also have some notorious weak points. Their massively over-built Engineering sections and Nacelles are very fragile, and if you think about it... almost every time you've seen a Galaxy die (Including the Enterprise) it's because of damage to those big, sensitive Engines. Considering the massive Engine output of the Galaxy, and the fact it's Armor is actually not that much higher than any other Federation ship of the line, it could technically be classed as a Cruiser. In fact, by turn of the next century, the Galaxies still in service are relegated to the role of "Exploration Cruisers". Yes, in 40 years, they'll still be using the good old Galaxy.
Is it a Star Ship? Yes! Is it a Star Cruiser? It can be!

39:27 Jake and O'Brien's engineering callback - you'll find DS9 does that a lot. It's why it's such a great show. I hate to be one of those "they don't make them like they used to" but... see with today's serialisation, you have 10-13 episodes to do the entire plot - which is worked out at the start of the season. Episode 1 we'll be covering X, episode 2 will be covering Y etc. It's built like a jenga or lego house - a piece at a time.
Syndicated shows like TNG are the exact opposite - such that you can basically tune in at any point in the show (in re-runs) and it won't matter - each episode has a beginning, middle and an end.
DS9 (and a couple of contemporaries - Babylon 5, The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer come to mind) rides this line - pretty much each season has an opening 2 parter, a middle 2 parter and an ending 2 parter. Those are the episodes that carry the "arc" for the season / show, and the middle bits are "filler".
However with DS9 you get the extra / add-on that the "filler" episodes also contribute in some small way - usually a throw away line here or there by some character is called back another episode or season, even if it didn't seem consequential at the time.
A good example here is The Dominion itself - it's mentioned, I think, twice before - once by a Dosi Merchant (Quark and the female Ferengi were trading with them) and once by the Skreean refugee leader. There may be another mention earlier in the season. There was no massive build up - there was no "whispers from beyond..." there was no big mystery - just BLAM here's The Dominion - and the clues were dotted around enough that it isn't a total surprise.
    ----
42:00 Your face lighting up and your "THE ENTERPRISE!" followed by the most heartfelt let down of all time. "Wait.. you're not captain Picard though :(" Honestly had the same emotion to it as a kid finding out its pet kitty has mysteriously changed shape after going missing for 2 days. "IT'S BUTTONS! Wait... button's didn't have a brown ear... ? :("
As an aside, this episode aired shortly after Star Trek Generations had been at the cinemas - that's the one where the Enterprise-D crash lands.
The writers specifically opted for a Galaxy class starship, as it was felt viewers would be familiar with how strong / powerful they were thanks to TNG; they took on The Borg and the Romulans! etc To see one getting blown away at the end was meant to assist with the impression of how dangerous The Dominion is - and that basically even if it had been Picard and Worf and Data etc - they wouldn't have won that battle either - technology and clever technobabble doesn't help when they will happily kamikaze your largest space vessels.
EDIT: WARNING - long ramble about the production of the show and galaxy class ships...
I believe this was the last footage of the TNG Enterprise model filmed for Star Trek. All subsequent footage of Galaxy class ships are CGI or refuse of stock footage. This episode marks the last "live action" use of the TNG model before it was sold off for I think $500,000 at auction several years later.
There were six Galaxy class starships originally constructed and many are seen in DS9 and VGR throughout their runs. There were six other Galaxy class hulls built but not assembled at this time in the show.
    The Original Six:
USS Galaxy (Alive as of Star Trek Nemesis - 2379)
USS Enterprise-D (Destroyed in Star Trek Generations - 2371)
USS Odyssey (Destroyed in this episode - 2372)
USS Venture (featured in DS9 season 4 - no spoilers about its status)
USS Challenger (featured in a VGR episode Timeless. Alive as of 2380s. Technically an alternate timeline but the ship wasn't the thing that had been changed and was there in the original timeline)
USS Yamato (Destroyed in Star Trek TNG season 2 - Contagion - 2365)
Then there were the other six hulls. These were later built to replace some of the above first generation which had suffered some losses. We don't all their names but we are aware of:
USS Magellan - featured in DS9 season 6.
USS Syracuse - featured in Star Trek Picard season 3.
The other four are un-named but may include USS Madison and was possibly destroyed in Star Trek: First Contact
There is also evidence that a Galaxy Class Ship was destroyed at Wolf 359 - Admiral Hansen was on a Galaxy Class bridge set - however the ship name is not spoken and it was possibly the USS Melbourne, a Nebula class ship which shares some architecture with Galaxy class ships.
    ----
45:20 "Breaking through the shields of a Galaxy class starship". You can't "out-tech" them by re-routing the plasma coil through the warp core to fix the situation. For the first time in Star Trek's history, the Federation is facing an equal - and in some worrying ways including certain technologies and science, a superior - adversary.
Sure, we've had The Borg as an existential threat but they're far away. The Federation has faced the Klingons and Romulans, each, before - and come out on top each time. By this point in the galaxy's history, the United Federation of Planets is a Major Galactic Power. It's the Dominant Culture of "That Part of the Galaxy". They've never actually met "An Equal" which is Just As Established and Just As Advanced. The Romulans are too paranoid and hide away, the Klingons inevitably burn themselves out each time etc. The Dominion is the first time in the Federations history it's met its match and it's can't talk, fight or tech their way out as they normally can and carry on the next week as if nothing happened.
    They're an Anti-Federation.
I can't really give any spoilers for future stuff - but we learn about their internal society ... a bit. Snippets from characters here and there, and stuff we can piece together as a result. But I can promise you that The Dominion is not a two-dimensional "big bad bully" that's evil for no reason. They have their reasoning, their logic and their own geography and societal history - and their own interactions with their neighbours as they grew up. The Federation got lucky, all things considered. Whilst the Klingons and Romulans and Cardassians were initially hostile, they were able to be "dealt with", mostly amicably.
The Dominion creators - the Founders - they were not so lucky, and took a different path.
They really are one of scifi's more "nuanced" societies out there.
    ----
51:55 "What do you call it - star cruiser, star ship ?" - honestly mate, anyone watching this will know what you mean if you use any phrase along those lines. In-Universe (puts on glasses), pretty much all space vessels are referred to as "Starship". "Starship" (one word) is, or was, a Trek-specific word that Roddenberry liked as it differentiated from the more generic "spaceship".
The USS Odyssey (and Enterprise-D from TNG) are both Galaxy Class Starships.
Galaxy class starships were meant to be "exploration cruisers", if it helps.
The TOS Enterprise was described by Klingons as a "battlecruiser".
There's ships later in DS9 and in other shows that are given names "destroyers", "cruisers", "battleships" but I can't really be specific as spoilers / too nerdy.
The Jem'Hadar ships you saw in this episodes are called "Fighters" btw. They are approx 10-15 times larger than a Runabout.
    ----
53:00 specifically on the shield penetration. As u'll remember in Generations, when the Klingons knew the "frequency" of the shields they could shoot through it. The Borg also use this technique for their weapons to break through shields. There's a couple of other times in Trek where it's mentioned - if you know the frequency (in Hz) of the shield of your target, you can fire through it or transport it as if the shield is not up.
In this episode, Dax specifically asks them if they tried "altering [their] harmonics" - Keogh replies that they had run "across the entire spectrum" but that "none of the frequencies were effective".
Star Trek has a problem - technobabble. The problem isn't that it exists. It's that sometimes it's meaningless gibberish to get the plot moving, other times it's 100% 'science' that is critical to the underlying story logic - and the problem is that we, the viewer, are not aware of which it is (meaningless throw aways, or mission critical information that the story logic hinges on).
In this case, it's mission critical. We're being told that whatever weapons the Jem'Hadar ships are using, they are able to negate shields and the enemy either has the capability to determine their frequency "live" and are adapting their weapons on the fly as the Odyssey is spamming its keyboard trying to randomise its frequencies, or the weapon they are using does not depend on frequencies at all - which rules out nearly any/all energy and particle beam based weapons - because all of those have a frequency.
Either option - that the enemy can "see" their own weapons settings, or that their weapons simply bypass shields - is a disaster. Remember these mofos regularly swinging phasers and antimatter around like it's nothing. Without any shields at all, you're at a serious disadvantage in a fire fight. These idiots put WINDOWS on their spaceships. With curtains and shelves in them! You think that can tank a single torpedo without shields lol?
And it's all in a small throw away line hidden among the noise - but its consistent with all previous "frequency" and "shield" law.
But to answers your question - yeah basically The Dominion are Advanced (TM).
    ----
55:05 "Incredible stuff" season 4 has what I think is the largest collection / compositing of physical models put to screen outside of motion pictures - in some frames over 70 elements at once. No spoilers - i said elements not spaceships :p But it was in 1995/6 - around the peak of cinema model work and the transition into CGI - this was the point in history when model and camera work was at its peak.

The battle was amazing because it also showed us how powerful are Galaxy Class starships. 3 Dominion ships were attacking it, penetrating their shields, and still they were resisting with the ship´s armor and managing to get back to the Alpha Quadrant. If not for the suicide attack, they would have reached DS9 without any doubt.

Sure, the security barrier will kill you... Because thats what you want from a barrier designed to hold prisoners who you kept alive in one place because you obviously want alive for information or other reasons (otherwise you'd have killed them already) and give them the opportunity to kill themselves before you extract the information you wanted to hold them for.

I'm not sure we can really trust that the barrier was actually lethal. The whole thing was a set-up to get Eris planted in the Alpha Quadrant, to do who knows what. Everything about it was carefully planned and staged, even the Jem'Hadar not shooting his weapon and letting himself get killed during the escape.

An interesting point about Odo when he was helping Chief Obrien is that he wouldn't be surprised if Obrien actually did it and he doesn't exactly love the federation either. But he'll do the right thing and expect justice if the Chief is innocent.

Quark's speech to Sisko about the Ferengi would've been great if we didn't already know that half of Ferenginar are pretty much slaves...

Thanks, Oliver! 🖖 So many clues have been leading to this... and it'll take years to play out. ෴ Avery Brooks and Kim Friedman directed these two. So much great storytelling yet to come!

Jake's pronunciation of "jambalaya" is possibly the only thing in this show that's worse than "Move Along Home".
