      Not really bad idea, the borg were curious about armor and probably wouldn't try to destroy the ship but only weaken it for capture.
      If they started blasting immediately, borg would scramble what they could right away to protect the gate from something resembling the 8472 species or whatever its called, maybe even use cubes to ram it.
      The last remaining is clearly not going to do much and ramming attempt is easily countered by single torpedo, it was good call to pull back and quite possibly shadow voyager to not lose it.

    • @normanroscher7545
      @normanroscher7545 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think Janeway hoped the Borg would not adapt to the armor so quickly. She wanted to avoid a massacre; there are hundreds of thousands of drones on each cube after all. Drones like Seven of Nine used to be one.
      In the beginning the armor was very effective and it seemed, the Voyager could simply fly through the cross-fire to its destination. But then the Borg found a way to adapt and started blasting the armor to bits. That's when she gave the order to fire.

      "Troll-face" didn't exist in _Star Trek,_ because the Internet wasn't invented. History for _Star Trek_ begins deviating from real history around the 1980s. Earth was in the tribal-like Eugenics Wars in the early-1990s, and then World War III in the 2050s.
      This also means the 'digital age'- cell phones, solar power, compact discs, electric cars, desktop computers- never got their chance to blossom and become mainstream, so we effectively got stuck with magnetic tapes, walkie-talkies and vinyl records (i.e. physical media) _well into_ the 2000s.
      The reason _Star Trek_ technology seems so backwards to us now is _not just_ because Hollywood left it behind (i.e. the -nutrek- regime), but because _many_ of the technologies that we have today didn't evolve the same way in their timeline.

      ...And the same when Archer and T'pol went back in time to 2003, and the world _wasn't_ prepping for WWIII; I get it, I get it, I get it.
      And that's one of the problems with the latter years of the Rick Berman Era- they _increasingly_ had difficulty behind-the-camera justifying how the world hadn't blown itself up yet IRL, yet _Star Trek's_ timeline already had at that point.
      Ideally, the Eugenics Wars had already ended by the early-2000s (Khan's mysterious disappearance in 1996 signaled the end of that), and there was an socioeconomic depression as a result (visited by Sisko and Bashir in a two-parter in _DS9_ ), and then WWIII happens in the 2050s.
      The problem is, when they made _ENT-_ which preceeded _TOS-_ the show had to justify looking like a hybrid of both 1960s tech and early-2000s tech; something which they readily admitted many times they struggled with.
      The best solution is for Trekies to selectively disregard certain details, and then say that events played out differently, yet WWIII hadn't happened yet. Also, it can be said that- in my original post- technology in _Star Trek_ developed at a different rate than IRL, which explains why they use recorder tapes that are _not_ magnetic strips.

      The warhead technology of the torpedoes was also revealed in the novel. It is based on generating a destructive subspace compression pulse. Upon detonation the torpedo delivers the pulse in an asymmetric superposition of multiple phase states. Shields can only block one subcomponent of the pulse. The other subcomponents deliver the majority of the pulse to the target. Every torpedo has a different transphasic configuration, generated randomly by a dissonant feedback effect to prevent the Borg from predicting the configuration of the phase states.

    As much as a lot of people bash Voyager, particularly for the finale, I must say I feel like this scene is quite legendary within the franchise. The idea that you can just tech up to a point where you can literally magic up unthinkable weapons just using the right ingredients and method is like forbidden magic- a pretty cool idea in my opinion.
    However I can't help but feel there is a high dose of plot armour at play here too- for a species as vast as the Borg, I don't think retreating would have been their response to this- quite the opposite. Especially if they were able to detect that they were having an effect on Voyager's armour, they'd throw everything they had at it until it worked.

      It's probably a scenario where someone has to scroll through a long dropdown menu of reconfiguration choices--hopefully in some sort of easily-recognizable order. And when something new pops up, some programmer adds the new choice to the menu and forgets to escape a line in the programming, resulting in the console exploding.

    Why not just fire torpedoes like crazy as soon as you entered their sensor range? Oh well. As soon as the Borg were "looking for ways to adapt to your armor" you should have been firing those torps.

    • @duchungle8438
      @duchungle8438 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally agree. It doesn't make any sense to give an enemy time/chance to fight back. Voyager got close to the transwarp network, and instead going through it (anyway), they turned back, giving the Borg time to react. That's why the second time Voyager got here, their amor and weapons were far less effective. Even when the Borg didn't assimilate Admiral Janeway, I believe that the Borg could adapt very soon.

      Because voyager would run out of torpedoes before the borg ran out of ships. The borg would have shared their sensor data across the entire collective. It wouldn't matter how many ships you destroyed in the here and now, Borg 1000 lightyears away would be working on the problem

    • @craigmartinj
      @craigmartinj 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joecolman1968 they were being attacked by 3 Borg cubes not 1000. Destroying them fast does not give them time to adapt.

    Not once in these comments did i see mentioned that this is basically old technology. These torpedoes are using the same tech that was used with the shield development on the Pegasus. That Enterprise D used to escape an asteroid. They was also an Episode whete Dr Beverly Crusher used transphasic shielding to encroach the cronussphere of a sun to destroy a borg ship. Voyager is full of sloppy writing that was its biggest problem. The only real future tech is the armour used but that is only a evolution od the blade armour used on the Defiant.

      Considering the Star wars universe uses Lasers and the shields do not even protect them from those, I'd say the Imperial fleet would be close to helpless against any ship from star trek. The only shield we've ever seen in star wars that a ship couldn't fly right through was the giant moon based shield on Endor
