      My local shelters charge a premium, take many applications for one dog, do inspections and trial periods.
      They make it as hard as they can for people to try and help.
      I think half the issue is what the shelters cause themselves.

      @@KYNAEVIL I agree. Someone wants a dog, odds are they aren’t going to go through all that. They will go to the quickest, easiest way, which indirectly just encourages more people breeding them.

      Right guys! I have a one bedroom condo but super active and run every morning and afternoon yet it’s so hard for me to get a medium size dog because the size of my place. 650 square feet but I think a dog would love being on a cozy bed next to mine than a shelter. Makes me so mad.

      @@Jsart87 You have my vote on being allowed to get a dog.
      People can’t help it if they have a small house, it’s what you can and would do outside of that restriction that should matter.
      You can always re-home a dog, there are plenty of dogs who’s owners can’t keep them, but are avoiding taking them to a shelter.

      @@Jsart87 have you considered a greyhound? I'm biased but greyhounds make great apartment dogs, although they are a breed that requires a lot of research to understand them, due to their pasts as working dogs and what that means once they retire.

    Decompression time was not mentioned, and is probably the most important, once you get your pet it is an adjustment for both or all of you.
    The dog may be fully potty trained, but may have accidents within the first couple, three weeks, trying to adjust to its new surroundings.
    Just like us, the three senses are sight, smell, sound.
    There is a 333 rule that floats around rescues and helps new families understand the overwhelming adjustment can be depending on what that dog even or cat has been through, quiet, and understanding time is best.
    This is just basic without any other pets, NEVER put animals together without doing proper introductions, depending on the personalities of the animals, which sometimes you don’t know until you find out.
    This can actually take some time with different animals so sometimes it’s even best if you’re unsure is foster to adopt.
    In the past year, I have learned I brought in two foster cats and learned that they were horrible with other cats but we’re OK with dogs so sometimes it’s the experience that you learn from, baby gates are a great tool to learn these behaviors.
    Of course, this is an a much larger scale with multiple animal homes, but just an idea of what to expect, and can be the key to success or failure.
    I also like that house call is mentioned, we Collett a home check, and I always love to follow up and where my animals have gone, how they’re doing, have a open communication and support if that family needs help with anything, and ALWAYS make sure that Animal comes back to you if there is any problems or need to be returned.
    We are in a crises, especially these days, so many abandoned and surrendered animals, you do not want your pet to end up in a shelter where many are so the best thing is not set up for failure, but to be available for a successful ending, along with spaying and neutering, must be a must🐾❤️👣

    I literally didn't know you have to pay to adopt a dog. I will still adopt one because "shopping" for one supports puppy mills and I dont want any part in that.

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I like your thinking! There are a lot of reputable breeders out there too, and getting a dog from there won't support puppy mills. As long as you do your research and find a good one :) Also, the prices I mentioned here aren't true for every rescue! Some cost very little, sometimes as little as $40! It really depends

      some of the money goes to the shelter because they have so many dogs and they need to care for them, other money can go to health medication and things like that, it's not just pocket money

    • @KYNAEVIL

      I recently adopted a dog off the previous owner directly...
      They could not keep him due to living arrangements.
      It was hard dealing with them directly, but a lot easier than adopting from a shelter...
      also he cost $200+ less than a shelter dog would have being $500 in my area.
      Not all breeders are puppy mills, but I made the choice that I wanted to give a grown dog another chance, rather than get the puppy that could easily find a home.

      I guarantee it's still cheaper than buying a dog from a breeder.
      It'll vary wildly based on breeder and the reputation and prestige of the breeder, but I would expect to pay no less than a thousand dollars. That's at least a reasonable ballpark figure for this area.

    I have had adopt fails as well as re-homed dogs that did not work out. I
    would always love the dog and then not know how to care for it. Then I got stressed out and returned the dog or found a good home for it. I just always assumed dogs were either well behaved or not. I now understand there’s way more to it! I’m not proud that I returned dogs to the shelter. And I have had a dog for 2 years now, a chihuahua my mom raised as a puppy. She’s amazing and I can’t imagine life without her. I also have studied and learned all about dogs and I feel more prepared to bring another one in my home. I feel I am ready to adopt again with no returns! Do I disclose that I have adopted or re-homed other dogs in the past?

    I worry about getting approved because I live in an apartment. I've done a lot of research and am only looking at a few breeds that I love and also do well in apartments. I'm not a total pure-breed snob but you have to be careful with apartment adopting that there's not high energy or high in seperation anxiety in the breed of you live alone and have to go to work at least part time.

    I'd love to adopt, but there's no way I'd get approved. Income too small, repeated history of homelessness, apartment likely too small... The list goes on.
    I get it, and wouldn't want to bring a pet into a situation where the question is if I can take care of myself. Doesn't make it suck any less.

    WOW 😱,, l'm glad I pulled this up. I never knew adopting a dog, means I pay for it 😮 l throught it was just the opposite. Not the agency paying me, to take 1 of their dogs. I thought the agency pays for a dog's food, toys and fun dog events 😅😊, we might go too. And I never knew they ask, millions of questions and interviewing my friends about me 😱 WOW, is it THAT SERIOUS 🤷💭💭

    I have a question, my parents are considering buying a dog for our family and it is our first puppy. We were looking for local rescue organizations and found one we like. It calls for a vet reference and we haven't ever needed a vet because it is our first pet as a family. Should we just call a vet and ask if they are excepting new customers and are willing to write a reference. Thanks. Anyone's opinion helps, we just need help getting our questions answered.

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! Good question! Most rescues will understand that you don't have a vet if you haven't had a pet before. I think that you are right in your thinking to call a vet office. Call and ask if they are accepting patients, and then tell the rescue exactly what you told me! That you've never had a pet before but you are set up with a vet clinic. This will show initiative, which the rescue will appreciate

    I live in NYC, and I don't get why adoption is so, so expensive. I know they don't want to give pets to any random person, but I thought that homes are in high demand. Making it so expensive is a huge detriment to the pets, isn't it? I wanted a small dog, and I was not expecting to pay more than $500 bucks. These adoption agencies want way too much money and I'm a caring person looking for my first pet. It's really frustrating. Is there another alternative to adopting in NYC?

      A lot of rescues/shelters are still allowing adoptions, but the appointments need to be scheduled in advance. A lot will also have pictures of the animals on their website. My suggestion would be to search for shelters in your area, look at the dogs profiles online, and when you see someone that looks like a good fit then contact the shelter to set up a scheduled meet and greet

    • @InRuffCompany
      @InRuffCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on where you are. Some places require a license and others do not. For example, I lived in Toronto and the city wants you to have a license (it costs maybe $30 and you can get it online), but there is no one to check if you have a license or not so many people don't get one. So, you will have to check in your city if it is required. The shelter will likely know the answer to that as well

    I just got a notification for denial from a bulldog rescue. The only thing was they don't adopt out fmif there are kids under 5 in the home despite the dog itself being completely fine with younger kids. O have alot of experience with bulldogs and have owned them in the past as well as being a dog groomer for over a decade before a stay at home mom. My husband also works from home so the pet will hardly ever be alone and we own a good size home with a nice fenced yard. Yet they denied us because I have a small child. The dog I applied for says" loves kids" right in its bio. I mean,it's completely their prerogative to do this however I think it should be a pet by pet basis like every other rescue I've worked with. That dog missed out on an amazing home with a family who is knowledgeable with the breed as well as helping an animal transition to a new home. It's not even because the animal itself isn't a good fit for kids. It's just sad.
    We are now working with another bulldog rescue that does believe the same as us on if a dog is great with kids then their is no reason to not try to place them in a Qualified home with kids

    The truth is dog rescue centers are overly invasive. I've given up trying to get a dog from a rescue because I feel like if I did, they're going to have the FBI break down my door at 5:00 in the morning. Apparently dog rescue centers feel it's more humane that the dogs spend the rest of his life in a 3.5 cage alone.

I don’t appreciate this so called “adoption” process.. it’s unnecessarily invasive & for that reason many dogs get screwed over.. & also why I will be BUYING mines..(I tried adopting.. already been to several shelters with their bulshit..) people don’t even realize only 23% of animals find homes from shelters opposed to 43% bought mainly because of the shelters ridiculous standards.. also half of that 43% started at a shelter & were turned off, it’s clear shelters do more harm then good attempting to be hero’s or w.e. the hell they believe.🤷🏾‍♂️ wouldn’t be crowed if people could actually adopt..
