  • Hey there! Welcome back to another vlog with Milton and Maddie. :) Ever since we got Milton, we've had to navigate the unique challenges of working full-time (in-person) while raising a puppy. Here's what a typical workday looks like for us, and some advice we have for any owners in the same position.

    I have a dog and work full time, I hate leaving her, I walk her before work and soon as I get in then before bed so she gets three walks a day but I still feel guilt. I spoil her when I’m off by taken her to new places for long walks or the doggy park, she’s a joy to me and I had my doubts initially but now I’m glad I’ve persevered

      Dogs are fine for several hours alone, they know they are in their den (home) and are happy to sleep. As puppies it's harder, but after 4 months you don't need to worry. They'll sleep and relax as dogs do, just walk them at least once a day and let them run around and smell the smells. That's all it takes to have a happy pet. One key to having a dog alone at home is white noise, have a fan or TV going so that they are slightly stimulated, it is terrible for dogs to be in a house with no sounds - they will get depressed almost immediately.

    I was fortunate that there was an awesome doggy daycare a half a block from my office so I got to take him to work with me then drop him off. The entire day, he’s playing and napping with other dogs as well as the handlers. He loved everyone there. I’d pick him up, take him for a walk then we’d go home. Sure it was expensive but it helped him to be social at a very young age.

    So I have a crate attached to a playpen inside the play pen is the potty pad with grass. I'll have a dog walker come once a day to he can go out and play. Do you think that is ok?

    • @MiltontheCorgi
      @MiltontheCorgi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends! For starters, I don’t recommend keeping the grass patch inside because you want to teach them that only outside is reserved for going potty. Second: Is your puppy already potty trained enough to know to not go inside? Because a playpen won’t prevent accidents, but a crate will! If they aren’t, I’d recommend just using the crate with some toys inside. You are having someone let them out during the day so they should be fine until they can be trusted with more freedom outside the crate!

      @MiltontheCorgi  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m so glad you found it helpful! Working from home is a major benefit to owning a puppy for sure. As long as you crate them for the appropriate duration of time, you can still do things on weekends! Remember-this time period of having to always watch them only lasts a few months.

I’m thankful that I can come home on my lunch break to let Milton out, but if I couldn’t, I would need someone to let him out midday or pay for doggy day care.

    • @MiltontheCorgi

      @@monkelife you totally can! In fact, you can leave them for up to six hours if needed (though not recommended to do often). • @MiltontheCorgi
      @MiltontheCorgi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s not just safety, it’s also potty training. Usually a dog won’t go in the same space they sleep, so a crate both keeps them safe and helps to prevent accidents when they are young. Nobody should leave a dog in a crate regularly more than 6 hours during the day, but 4 hours is generally fine until they can be trusted outside of the crate.

      Actually as long as you’re not leaving them in a crate and they have a small playpen where they can P and poop and eat and drink water there OK leaving an animal in a room by itself can be very dangerous doesn’t matter how train a dog can be things can happen things can break

      He doesn't! And part of that is due to the work we did when he was a puppy, by crating him for various periods of time and always leaving/entering the house without acknowledging him. Both of these things teach your dog that you leaving isn't a big deal, and you can even give him a special treat that he only gets when you are gone to make the experience even better.

    Our lab pitbull mix passed away in March of this year. I really want to get another puppy (a cockapoo), but I am obsessing over the decision because I understand the commitment that comes along with it. The only thing I'm obsessing about is that I work full time and there would be 4 days a week that he/she would be home alone for 4.5 hours. Obviously I would take two weeks off to help with the transition of the pup leaving mom. Is it selfish to get a pup when you work full time? Again, it would be 4.5 hours 4 days a week that theyd be in a playpen area. However in the evenings the little one with come to the kids outdoor sports practices and bascially go everywhere with us. Thank you in advance for your advice and experience.

    • @MiltontheCorgi
      @MiltontheCorgi  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Christina! I don't think it is selfish to get a dog if you work full time, as many do. However you need to take into account the energy level of your dog and their potty training ability. Milton, for instance, is a high energy herding breed, so being home alone all day is not fair to what he needs to be stimulated. Many owners either use services like Rover/Wag or seek out a doggie daycare to ensure that their dog is still getting the socialization or exercise they need, even if the owner themself cannot provide. I consider these expenses as something every owner who works full time should assume taking on, or finding some alternate situation that meets YOUR dog's individual needs (as every one is different!).

      Nope! Dogs don’t like to go potty in the same place they sleep, which is one of the best benefits of a crate. We always made sure he went out at least once before we put him in his crate though, because he was a puppy and had less control/ability to hold his bladder at the time. However, if you aren’t crating them directly after a meal they should be able to hold it in the crate just fine for 3-4 hours if needed (depending on their age).

    • @tonyp8229

      I don't understand this mentality. Dogs need structure. They need boundaries. They also need to learn to be independent from you! Otherwise you've got a pup with separation anxiety, and that's not good. The crate (when used properly) is the perfect way to accomplish all of the above safely where he can't hurt himself! Its also a potty training tool. Its not a cage or medieval dungeon for god sake, its a safe space. And as they get older and learn to entertain themselves non-destructively without you, you take the crate away. Stop coddling your dogs and stop treating them like human babies, their not. It ALWAYS results in issues that will cause you to call a trainer, reach out for help on the internet and wonder why your pup is doing what he's doing. Seriously people

      Have you considered, if it’s possible for you, to hire a dog walker? They would come to your house and walk your dog for up to 1 hour, which would break the boredom, let them exercise and relieve themselves. Adult dogs tend to sleep between 12-14 hours a day and puppy 18-20 hours a day. So if you give them a break in the middle of the day, it is not impossible to get a dog whilst working full time.

      @Martinarbn i have but it's 20€ per per walk is too much money for to spend me. For eveyday except the weekend it would be a total of 400€. If I chose 3 times a week it's 240€. If I had more money I would do it but sadly I don't 😥

      If you watched the full video, you will see that there is really only 1-2 days per week that he is crated during the day (other days he is out all day while my husband works from home). He is let out for an hour on my lunch break on the days he is crated. And to note, this is only until he can be trusted to be out and not destroy our furniture or potty inside. Very rarely will any puppy be trusted in this way until they are at least 8 months-1 yr old. His current setup is his crate with the door open, attached to a playpen that he can walk around and play with toys in. You want to slowly give them more space to not get overwhelmed. All of this has been done through the close guidance of a professional dog trainer.
