Hi Colin, I am getting ready to remove the engine from my 08 Outback. This video is super helpful. Your tricks and tips can only come from someone who has worked in the field for some time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Looks like you live in a nice area. I live where one can watch the rust grow in real time..
Thank you for an fantastic, stress free video. This was our first time pulling an engine, and you made it easy. We were able to follow the video step by step to take the engine out, and then we worked backward reassembling. We followed another video and did our own head gasket replacement. What an amazing project. Thank you for this great content. Our college student is thrilled to have her car back!
@@devinpaisley In the video, he places all the screws and such on the dash in order of removal. We put them in numbered labeled plastic baggies. That helped immensely because they didn't get mixed up at all. Best of Luck on your project.
@@devinpaisley It took us about 4 days of slow and steady work. The thing that took the longest was sending out the heads to be machined. That took about 2 weeks lead time and ran us about $1200 but also included a valve job. One day to pull the engine and take apart the heads. One day to replace the clutch and deep clean the engine compartment and the block. One day to reassemble the engine. One day to put the engine back into the car. Our project cost about $2500 which included a clutch, new timing kit, new water pump, thermostat, head gaskets, oil, coolant. On a side note, this took considerable physical strength and some new tools. We really needed a digital torque wrench, wobble socket, lots of brake cleaner and shop towels, gojo hand cleaner. We also followed the Speed Academy video, "How To Replace Subaru Leaking Headgaskets SOHC EJ25". This was incredibly helpful.
@@Jablk5Homeschool Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Really appreciate it. I have also watched the Speed Academy video. Getting excited to do this on my Outback!
One helpful thing is to pull the power to the fuel pump. And then crank the motor for a couple seconds. Itll clear the fuel out of the line so it doesn't spray when you disconnect the line. Also save that little plastic cap for the batt terminal posts so you dont have to worry about shorting your battery with the AC compressor.
I do a lot of these in the Salt belt, a trick for separating the eng/trans that works every time is drilling a hole at the parting line at the top someplace where the 2 are pretty close/even. Once you have a hole, use a taper punch to pry them apart. Once broken free start spraying penetrant down to the dowel areas and you can now get a more suitable prying tool in between the eng/trans.
Getting ready to pull my 2003 forester engine. Have watched numerous YT vids, all good ones but none come close to your work. None. Thanks so much for this.

I'm pulling a motor out of a 2011 Outback w/CVT today; I started prepping it yesterday. Man, did I take a lot of shit apart I didn't need to LOL Thanks for this! SUBBED.
I have a 2013 WRX STI POS that has used a quart of oil every 800 miles since new. It threw its cam belt at 16K miles, now it has idle problems. It doesn't have the idle control module that I have seen on TH-cam. It seems to use different parts than other years of Subarus. It needs decent pistons rods and rings. I would get rid of it, but I have leukemia and don't have the money or credit to replace it.
Thank you for the video. I am considering a used Subaru but was concerned about the issues that require motor removal. After watching this, I am not that concerned anymore, but nothing ever comes apart that easy for me. Do you ever pull motor and transmission together or always separate, if no reason to pull transmission. Old cars we generally pull them together because it's easier to put back in.
Yeah headgaskets are “normal maintenance” on the old EJ motors. If I pull them together it’s generally out the bottom dropping the subframe. So no i don’t out the top. If everything’s in order, it will just add more headaches. Trans fluid coming out, diff fluid from pulling the CV shafts, etc etc. Ain’t worth it IMO

Great videos! Very informative. Here’s a question I have: I have a 2005 forester nonturbo that broke a timing belt. I inspected the chambers with a tiny camera and I saw where one valve definitely hit the piston. I also have a 2010 legacy with a rotted subframe. My question is can I use the 2010 motor in the 2005?
That’s a tough one, not easily. The 05 prolly doesn’t have VVL, so you’d have to lock out the rockers (video in the works) and the oil pan is different, so you’ll have to swap thoose, and drill some holes out as the 2010 had larger bolts for the aluminum pan. Your best bet is to fix what you have, it just needs heads and a timing belt, or valves and a lap job/ valve job
Man! I've been wrestling my engine for two days. It's an 05 FXT. I've followed all your steps. I can't seem to split the engine/ transmission. I'm wondering if I missed a bolt. The top cracks open but the bottom won't split! Ughhh!

If it’s manual, I’ve had the input hang on the clutch. I put a long wrench on the crank and suddenly “jerk” it many times to get the splines to align and it will slide together
Awesome video but I can save you a couple minutes. Instead of pulling that AC bracket for the front lifting point, lay your chain over the hole and put one of your longer bolts through it. Plenty of thread engagement and it ain't going anywhere.
Swapped my 07 Forester motor into an 09 Forester. Any tricks for the engine codes? It also goes into an issue with traction control and engine light on. Shimmies like mad then returns to normal 🤦
Awesome video tutorial, but I do have one question how did you roll the car back if the tranny was on the jack? And would this still be the same process for a 2011 legacy EJ25?
I just send it and let stuff slide or roll, you only need like 4” before the jack can be lowered, and the transmission conveniently rests on the crossmember. I do recommend putting a spacer under the transmission before lowering. A small chunk of 2x2, or 2x4 on each side, if done correctly, no jack is needed upon installing the motor, I mate the engine to the trans, go up on the engine hoist, and remove the blocks of wood
2011 legacy should have a center mount in front of the timing belt cover, and no “motor mounts” but rather transmission mounts. Getting the lower bellhousing bolts can be a nightmare, but no jacking of the transmission is required, I’ve only done a 6spd as I’m scared to touch anything with a CVT cause they always blow up 😂
@@steinfabgarage So do you suggest doing this engine swap since it is automatic trans? never done this before so just want to make sure. Also how would i know all the torc specs?
@@Dirty711 yeah I’d do it, you can always pull the cv shafts to get the bolts if there being difficult, ummmmm I don’t use torque specs, but I’ve been wrenching for years. When the bolt breaks, it’s too tight
@@Dirty711 on a serious note, pay attention to how tight they are during removal, and make them around that tight during install (mark a bolt, loosen it, tighten it to the mark, remember about how tight to go). It’s not rocket science, make sure stuffs tight, but don’t go crazy….
Very possible. I read a service bulletin or recall (can’t remember which) on some that didn’t have enough sealant from the factory. Check with your local Subaru dealer, might be under warranty

Nope, depending on rust, they can be really stuck together, hit it with a file after it’s out, trans too
Swapped my 07 Forester motor into an 09 Forester. Any tricks for the engine codes? It also goes into an issue with traction control and engine light on. Shimmies like mad then returns to normal 🤦
Did you use the 09 harness? I hope you did, the 07 won’t work on it
Awesome video tutorial, but I do have one question how did you roll the car back if the tranny was on the jack?
Hi, will a 2018 subaru outback wagon have a cam carrier leak/drip at 34,000 miles on the car? bought the car end of 2017.
Very possible. I read a service bulletin or recall (can’t remember which) on some that didn’t have enough sealant from the factory.
Check with your local Subaru dealer, might be under warranty
can you remove the cylinder head with the engine on the car or u have to remove the whole engine wich one would be more easy
You can….. but it’s tight. Especially if it has VVL (vtec).
If your doing both heads, pull it out
Nice, but definitely no cheats here, lots of operations no matter what with this design.
The cheat can be as simple as knowing what wrench to use. I have yet to find a better walk through for a DIY’er that is inexperienced
@@steinfabgarage It's a great vid/guide don't get me wrong.
Understood. For someone experienced, yes, less of a cheat code as we all have our own tricks
Do you have a shop
Superb 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you
Great video….
I REMENBER WHEN THE SPERT TIRE IS INSIDE ENGINE BAY
