      Hi Robert, just want to say based on the throwing product from problematic brand, tbh for people who really felt they don't want to wear the product at all, donate to homeless shelter especially one that help rehabilitate people to work again as makeup is expensive and if you are homeless, even drugstore brand can be very expensive. Just my two cents though.

      Robert, I just had to tell you that I have found myself not watching videos by influencers still heavily applying foundation, concealer and baking powder. I have watched how you apply your makeup very carefully, and you are so intentional about where you place products. I remember when I tried to apply my own makeup the "youtube"way, and what a MESS. Thank you for bringing us back to reality!!

    About men in the makeup industry, I see parallels in this all the time where men are favored in female-dominated fields. A prime example of this is cooking. Women are expected to do the cooking for their home, and its not ready considered a respected art form, but just an expectation. But at elite restaurants, they're dominated by men. Its like when a woman is doing makeup, its what's expected of her, but when a man does it its high art. I really appreciate you addressing this, and I also want to make it clear that I'm 100% in favour of people of all genders expressing themselves through makeup :)

    The thing is man will always get more praise in a professional setting, even if it’s something usually associated to women. Just like cooking... (ignorant) people will say it is a woman’s job but when it comes to professionals, male chefs are always on the top.

      True. Almost every eye look is made with false lashes in mind. I've even seen falsies whacked on in some 'every day makeup look' videos. Personally, I don't like wearing them regularly. Maybe on some special occasion.

    "I don't want people calling my brides ugly."- Can I just appreciate for a second the honor in that? So many influencers would be willing to share those photos anyways for the attention, regardless of the effects it could have on the person. That sentence is the kind of thing I would want my makeup artist to say if I ever got married, it means I can trust them to care about how I feel, which means that I can probably trust them to care about how the makeup makes me feel/look. It's the small things dude.

    I think the thing about men in the beauty industry is that men can rise to the top of a typically feminine industry/community but you rarely see women do the same in more masculine environments.

    • @cornflakrgirl82
      @cornflakrgirl82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    • @seraphim1278
      @seraphim1278 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Computer programming was traditionally a female field that was "redefined" by society as masculine. Acting was a traditionally all-male profession that has become much more female-driven. This has happened both ways throughout history. It's interesting to go back in time, so to speak, and see how these roles have been redefined by societal norms over time.

      I think it depends on the industry. I will say that female do generally tear down other females who are doing well &/or aren’t as obsessively driven as males. Males generally represent the very best & worst in industries and society. Differences aren’t bad. It may seem unfair but it’s reality. There are always exceptional outliers & they rise to the top regardless. Plus re: beauty TH-camrs have predominantly female viewers so if males are more popular it’s due to a large amount of female viewers. IMO, no hate & always do your best in life. (humans are fairly predictable on a macro level)

    Hey Robert! I think a makeup artist in "the real world" and a makeup artist on youtube serve 2 different functions. MUA's online get more attention when they're doing makeup on themselves because people are looking to them for tricks on how to do makeup on themselves. Like you said, the two skills don't always translate and it wouldn't be super helpful for an everyday person to see how MUA's do makeup on other people.

    Maybe the person making the "men in makeup" comment was thinking like me, that there have always been men well represented behind the scenes of makeup, but only recently have we seen the big surge in men actually WEARING makeup on a daily basis, in makeup ads, and being equally represented through makeup on runways. There are clearly more men wearing makeup in the last few years than at the turn of the millennium, for instance.

    • @jessislistless
      @jessislistless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I think men have always been wearing makeup like a touch of concealer here, a little powder there just to hide a few blemishes or tiredness. The past years and especially this recent decade we see more men wearing "colour makeup" like eyeshadow, blinding highlighter and lashes. Many male celebrities wear make-up even off screen. Also, of course, we are experiencing a huge societal change in the attitude we have towards men taking a more "feminine" approach to their look and the way they present themselves.

    • @ladydartz
      @ladydartz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's, historically rather wrong, through most of history men would wear make up, as recent as the 1970's there were a lot of makeup brands just for men. Even in times when makeup was not allowed for women (example, Victorian era) men would have access to make up brands that woul cater for them without all the negative connotations female makeup would face. Kings and noblemen wore make up, so did bishops and cardinals, even the pope. It's a really new phenomenon to see makeup exclusively associated to women.

    • @Heyheyrayeraye
      @Heyheyrayeraye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ladydartz I'm referring to more recently. Stryx recently launched a men's only makeup line which is something we've never seen before. And it is also more socially acceptable in general for men to wear colorful looks, which were seen mostly as a women's style of makeup. I don't mean concealer and a little eyeliner. In the past few years men have become more comfortable with full beat, glam looks for everyday wear socially and in the workplace. My best friend is the most awesome, gorgeous guy and absolutely LOVES makeup. When we were in school he would let me practice makeup on him, but never felt comfortable actually wearing it out of the house simply because of the stigma gay men faced. Today he's amazing at makeup and when we go out he's full glam gorgeous and women AND men absolutely flock to him. That's what I meant.

    The most important lesson for MUAs is hygiene and infection control which you can't guarantee is fully understood in a self taught artist.
    It's also why I've been super cautious since lockdown rules have eased but ive felt safe enough to get a new tattoo because I know my artist already had a conscientious and deep understanding of infection control and aseptic technique and we would be wearing masks. But I wouldn't go to someone's house for a reiki healing massage, just because I don't trust the average person to have the same infection control knowledge even if they wash their hands+surfaces, tools+towels and mask up.

    I get so excited when you post. I've never enjoyed wearing makeup (it's not my thing), but I LOVE watching your videos! I enjoy learning about all these techniques and products, even though I'll never use any lol 😂
    You just have such a beautiful personality and put a smile on my face.
    I've also been really enjoying the Double Cleanse podcast. You and James are so fun to listen to and I actually fall asleep to the podcast every night!
    I hate being one of these fans, but I really just want to say I appreciate you! I've been going through a terrible break up, and your videos have been such a great distraction for me.
    Thank you for being a positive force in this weird world! Much love to you! ❤

    I love your videos, I love eye shadow primer, can't live without it because my eyelids get so oily, starting to find face primers that actually work for me too, however the biggest difference I have noticed is after I started really getting into skincare the whole makeup game changed for me too! Love you Robert!

    The representation comment was referring to more men wearing makeup, being featured by cosmetic brands, and breaking the stigma about men wearing makeup. Anyone who wants to wear makeup should do it proudly. 🌈💖🎨

    You mentioned you were wearing highlighter in this video. I’d love to know which! You have such a nice and natural glow.

    Robert is the kind of person I want to go to coffee with, but only just listen to him. He can talk to me in detail what he did on his free day and what shows he watched, how he washed dishes and Id just sit there in awe and nod.

    Totally agree - eye primers are absolutely necessary. If I don't use one, my eyeshadow just slips right off! Have a great weekend.

    I understand the men in makeup one, I think it's easy for people from big cities to take for granted how normal it is for men to wear makeup. I didn't see a man wear makeup until I was 18 years old and when I did see him, he was being assaulted physically in a Kmart, so seeing so many men able to safely wear makeup is really refreshing (even though I no longer identify as male). That said I completely understand your statement about women and I'm happy that more woman owned companies, specifically black woman owned companies are popping up and gaining popularity

    Robert, I LOVE this series! Please continue to make more videos like this. I love hearing your opinion, which I pretty much take as gospel, because you are so sensible, kind, considerate and educated. It's so refreshing to see people like you on YT, and I feel like your channel attracts (mostly) open-minded, respectful viewers. It just feels so positive and welcoming here. So thank you!!!

    My unpopulair opinion: you don't need to bake, or heavy foundation! The super big unnatural long false lashes (for a party or special occasion, sure. To go to the office or just grocery shopping: no). Also, heavy contouring of the face. But also: I believe everyone absolutely should do what makes them happy, ofcourse :) Don't mind me :-D

    Isn’t it so horrible how mean, rude & nasty ppl can be online. People usually are so quick to attach the way other people look behind their phones or computers and it’s so sad. I know people have to be tough to be in the social media spotlight. Love your channel Robert. 💜
