- July 1, 1863, if it were the only day of the Battle of Gettysburg, ranks in the top 20 of Civil War battles. Yet on tours and in popular memory it is often glossed over, which is too bad. Some of the fiercest fighting of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg happened on July 1. The Iron Brigade, with 1,883 soldiers lost 1,153 in killed, wounded, or missing. And they weren't the only ones to sustain such loss.

Its amazing how much there is going on here and how interesting all 3 days of the Great Battle was. Interesting and tragic.
Indeed
I’m from Wales UK and I’ve fallen in love with the US Civil War (we had ours from 1642-1651 and it was just as bloody and gruesome an affair) after listening to Addressing Gettysburg for the last few months. I LOVE HISTORY and studied it in University before changing lanes and becoming a Pharmacist - long story and wish I’d stuck to History !! Anyway thanks for sharing your immensely valuable knowledge with everyone and please keep it coming xx
Thank you very much. Every time I think of throwing in the towel an email or comment like this comes through and makes me say “one more month”. Happy 2024 to you and yours!
P.S. there’s no money in history. You chose the better career path
This is the best description, the most comprehendable out there of July 1st, 1863. Awesome interviewing skills, Matt.
Thank you very much!
Great discussion always leave the listener better informed and with better questions.
Nice job.
Thank you
Very good! My second Gettysburg anniversary listening to you guys 😎🤘. Fantastic show fellas.
Awesome! Thank you for sticking with us!
@@addressinggettysburg your welcome! I'm still hoping and waiting for a " Sickles was right" episode though 😂👍.
Lol I’ll ask Hessler if he’d like to come on and do it
I really appreciate Rich Kohr's work - his stuff on The Gettysburg Daily website was great - really informative stuff.
"Even though (Marcellus Jones) is from Chicago and used to shooting at people" - LOL
I told him this tonight and he said “oh great!”
Matt, to be honest, the 1st Day is by far my favorite! When you are standing where that broadcast came from, you can see THE WHOLE DAY unfold in front of your eyes! Plus my side won the day! Nothing sexier that a yankee army in full retreat!
lol certainly must look better than seeing one accept your surrender. But, yeah, that spot is a great vantage point. But don’t tell too many people, lest the park start requiring special permits to go there.
So glad I didnt have to fight in the civil war.
You and me both!
A 2+ hour discussion of only the first day and not one mention of John Burns?!?! I guess no one wanted to step on ole Timmy Smith's toes, huh?!? 😉 #Cooooool
These are improvised. We talk about what we think matters in the moment. Then we go “oh nobody mentioned John Burns!” Then we do a show about him later
That was a compliment! 😉 Burns should have minded his own business and butt out!!
