The turbo-autofire is preventing you from actually using the lightning weapon in Truxton, as you're meant to hold the button down (1 press). Then you'll get the full beam that locks on to the bigger enemies and drains them of their life.
Back in the day I finished a Steampunk shooter game called THE STEEL EMPIRE for the Genesis. I recommend it a lot. It has awesome graphics and designs...
I'm 7 years late. This is an awesome suggestion. I wanna add Granada too. A very tough and fun top down shooter that let's you move wherever you want, and the boss only shows up when you kill the enemy structures in the map.
I can't believe I just watched a "shmup contest" where the worst version of Raiden (bar the Jaguar one) won over a game like Thunder Force IV (Lightning Force).
Fularu "Truxton", one of the best classic shooter out there "Thunder Force IV", considered to be the best shmup ever with hard rocking music and beautiful background and boss animations "Raiden Trad", an average port of the arcade, still enjoyable but really not great "Bio-Hazard Battle", a weird but awesome game with lots of imagination "Thunder Force II", a mix of vertical and horizontal shooting levels with great music "Phelios", an imaginative mythological shooter "Twin Cobra", a shameless rip-off of raiden, with undetailed and generic sprites and background. Only the music saves it. And the winners are......... Raiden Trad and Twin Cobra ...seriously...

Probably like 15-20 minutes at the most, maybe 30 but even that's not really enough time to really appreciate something and recognize it's strengths. Thunder Force IV is no doubt the best shmup on the system (+best 16-bit shmup) but you have to actually *play it* to see that, not demo it for a half hour lol. Halfway through the game, you earn a charged laser blast and if you use it at the right time during boss fights, it's immensely satisfying. The fact that it pushes 16-bit shooter gameplay to its technical maximum is just the cherry on top. After that I'd say Fire Shark, Musha, TF3, Steel Empire, Bio Hazard, Raiden T, Elemental Master Phelios, Vapor Trail, Trouble Shooter.
Fularu its kinda funny how a lot of game collectors have all these games but have barely played any them for more than 15 minutes or not even played them at all lol
You haven't played the SNES version? I much prefer the Genesis version of Raiden to Thunder Force IV. Do you always struggle with people having a different opinion to you?
@TheSentinel3000 - I tend to get excited when Paul, beer & violent video games are concerned. Even though this episode is a *little* racy, I think we are still well on the PG-13 side of things, and way more tame than 99% of other TH-camrs out there. Thanks for the comment.
Some of my favorite shooters on the Genesis are Truxton, Thunder Force III, Gaires, Whip Rush, MUSHA and Zero Wing. If you like shooters, you should try Space Mega Force for the SNES.
Truxton (or Tatsujin as I know it because I own japanese version) is insanely hard game even for first playthrough, let alone next ones (it's Toaplan game, so it cycles endlessly with increasing difficulty each round) but that soundtrack! I played arcade version decades ago and Mega Drive version is faithful enough and arcade stick with Turbo is required. I still don't understand why Mega Drive never had R-Type port, Master System version is only one I can play and complete but even SNES had Super R-Type, so why not Mega Drive? And by the way, thanks to not brought up Arrow Flash.
I don't like gimmicky shoot 'em ups, and Mars Matrix is with Ikaruga one of them. Truxton is just eight directions, shoot and bomb and that's it. For me nothing can beat R-Type in terms of pure evil bullshit that developers throw at you, but I love it, as I love Blazing Lazers and Lords of Thunder.
You need to play for at least half an our each of the games.. From the bunch of games you played my favorite is THUNDERFOCE II, and a fact is Lightening Force original name es THUNDER FORCE IV (a game so hard I still can´t finish without cheating). But you are missing THUNDER FORCE III, MUSHA, VAPOR TRAIL and some other shoot em ups you may like. I know this video is more than two years old, maybe you know all of this by now..
@helzabre - Funny you should mention that game, I bought a copy of Shikigami no Shiro for the original Xbox from a guy who had the Japanese version... and it plays great! I have to use an Xbox that has XBMC on it to play however. Pretty fun shooter!
@rojman123 - I actually captured almost 3 hours of footage, which I boiled down to 15 minutes for 7 games... but you are right, most of these games require more time dedicated to them to really see what they are all about.

Megadrive is the best console for shmups for me ! Megadrive have a TON of great shmups ! Fire Shark is an amazing demonstration of sprites animation on MD and it's very close to the Arcade Version (the MD version was made by Toaplan like the Arcade Version who use a PCB close to the MD Pcb !), Musha Alester for sure (everybody know it !), Thunder Force 3 and 4 (surely the best classic horizontal shmups we can find on 16 Bits machines ! Just fucking amazing ! I'm totally fan of this games !), Gaiares is an amazing shmup too etc etc MD is really the best console for retro shmups ! It is THE Console for retroshmup with BLAST Processing you know ?! Ah ah !!! Have a great day and HAIL FROM FRANCE !

Thunder Force IV us fantastic, And TFIII is good too. And TFII is good as well, even though the Sharp X68000 version is superior (better graphics and sound, and 2 extra levels). M.U.S.H.A is amazing, on and on and on, sure the TurboGrafx-16 had the best 16-best SHMUPS but Genesis ones are great too.

I liked the reviews on this one, but out of ALL of the games you did review on THIS episode, Bio-Hazard Battle was probably the most interesting game ON the Genesis besides kolibri for the 32X. I loved the eerie theme and the cheesy-ass music. The Weapon system was pretty interesting as well. I was more interested in trying to figure out how you all collect SO many games over the years. If so no way is that enough time to make an informed choice. In my opinion the best (U.S. released) shooters on the system are Thunder Force IV, followed by Fire Shark, then Musha, Thunder Force III, Bio Hazard Battle, Steel Empire, Elemental Master and then perhaps Phelios. Why 15-30 minutes isn't enough time? Because these games take time to get into, master, and fully appreciate. Like in TF4, halfway through the game you earn a super charged laser blast, and using that at the right time during boss battles is immensely satisfying. It also makes excellent practical and strategic use (through clever enemy and level design) of every weapon you receive in the game, a thing every other shooter on the system simply does not capture. The thing is, it takes repeated playthroughs to really appreciate and actually recognize each games strengths and weaknesses, can't just slew them all in an afternoon and project your first impressions.
I want one of those arcade sticks so bad! I have a bunch of those, I didn't realize bio hazard battle had co-op. Have you tried Raiden Trad on SNES? I have that version, it's a bit more colourful. Definitely is a nice pick up and play game I liked the back grounds and loved the multi layered aspects where you seemingly drive over highway overpasses. A pretty cool Genesis shoot em up I just got is Vapor Trail. Nothing spectacular, just a very solid top down shooter. The thing that makes it stand out is it's two player co-op mode. I love finding shoot em ups from the 16 bit consoles where you can have to ships on the screen at the same time.
If you're going to play Truxton in the future, please don't use auto fire, especially when you get the lightning weapon. The lightning weapon using normal controls needed to be held down for the lightning to extend and auto aim on the enemy's. Awesome clasic shmups, my best has to be Truxton though, brings back a lot of memories.
All great shooters there! Thunder Force & Truxton are great, but the best Megadrive shooter is Eliminate Down. Sadly its pricey... it needs to be re-released on current consoles.
Truxton with lightning power using turbo shot. I think you dont know how to play it. Should spend more time getting into the games. Also thunderforce 4 kicks all of those games out the water. And zero wing as well is not on your list, but it was better than the original arcade. The most addictive shooter of all time on the megadrive for me

Shit, I had no idea. If I had a Dreamcast (and a job) I'd probably pay for that. It's a great game for shmup fans to own a physical copy of, and I enjoy collecting rare games that I enjoy. Sadly I only own two "rare" games these days: Suikoden II (cracked case and missing the manual Q.Q) and SMT: If... (which I can't play due to the language barrier). I need to start collecting again.
If you don't mind bullet hells I'd recommend Mobile Light Force 2 (AKA: Shikigami no Shiro) on PS2 if you haven't tried it yet. I got it for about $7 around '05-'06 so it's sure to be
Some might not like the swearing Metal, but for me it was like me and my buddies sitting down, drinking beer, and gaming.. Perhaps this could be a second show where you and Paul just drink beer, play and review games. I would love to be able to hang out with a buddy once a week and do this. . On a side note, i cant believe ya never played twin cobra, I puumped alot of quarters into this machine back in the 80s. Man i miss great arcades. Great work!
You have some great titles there for the Genesis. Man you need to get your hands on a copy of Airbuster, and I also recommend Fireshark. Two great shooters for the Sega Genesis console. I been collecting these recently also and I agree completely about Bio Hazard Battle and Truxton they are both great. And Raiden series is my favorite shoot em up. So many good shooters on the Genesis.
good vid, but this video is lacking one very important SHMUP on the Genensis/MD, MUSHA. You have not played a good SHMUP in the Genesis until you play MUSHA. It's pricy, but worth every penny. Even today, it holds its own against the Treasure and Cave greats.
My favorite is Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV)! You should get it's prequel, Thunder Force III! It has the general feel of Lightening Force, but is much easier!
Phelios is fucking awesome!! And Thunderforce 4!! Lighte(!!)ning ... I´m a european, so I can´t get Raiden Trad, but it looks so good... oh well, back to MUSHA then...

my two best shooters I have ever played was Giga Wing for the arcade and the american version of Bio-Metal for the SNES, would of never thought 2 unlimited music would fit so well with a shmup :P

Lightning Force is one of the best SHMUPS ever made. Rocking soundtrack, amazing graphics, and intense gameplay.
Its name outside the USA is “Thunderforce IV”, which better describes its lineage (IMHO).
Thunderforce 4, Arrow flash, zero wing, hell fire, gley lancer, gynoug, the entire strike series, all good but many more

In Truxton, the blue weapon doesn't work properly when you use autofire. You need to disable autofire and then just hold down the fire button.

Have you tried Raiden Trad on SNES? I have that version, it's a bit more colourful. Definitely is a nice pick up and play game I liked the back grounds and loved the multi layered aspects where you seemingly drive over highway overpasses.
A pretty cool Genesis shoot em up I just got is Vapor Trail. Nothing spectacular, just a very solid top down shooter. The thing that makes it stand out is it's two player co-op mode. I love finding shoot em ups from the 16 bit consoles where you can have to ships on the screen at the same time.

If you're going to play Truxton in the future, please don't use auto fire, especially when you get the lightning weapon. The lightning weapon using normal controls needed to be held down for the lightning to extend and auto aim on the enemy's. Awesome clasic shmups, my best has to be Truxton though, brings back a lot of memories.
All great shooters there! Thunder Force & Truxton are great, but the best Megadrive shooter is Eliminate Down. Sadly its pricey... it needs to be re-released on current consoles.

Truxton with lightning power using turbo shot. I think you dont know how to play it. Should spend more time getting into the games.
Also thunderforce 4 kicks all of those games out the water. And zero wing as well is not on your list, but it was better than the original arcade. The most addictive shooter of all time on the megadrive for me

Shit, I had no idea. If I had a Dreamcast (and a job) I'd probably pay for that. It's a great game for shmup fans to own a physical copy of, and I enjoy collecting rare games that I enjoy.
Sadly I only own two "rare" games these days: Suikoden II (cracked case and missing the manual Q.Q) and SMT: If... (which I can't play due to the language barrier). I need to start collecting again.
If you don't mind bullet hells I'd recommend Mobile Light Force 2 (AKA: Shikigami no Shiro) on PS2 if you haven't tried it yet. I got it for about $7 around '05-'06 so it's sure to be
Some might not like the swearing Metal, but for me it was like me and my buddies sitting down, drinking beer, and gaming.. Perhaps this could be a second show where you and Paul just drink beer, play and review games. I would love to be able to hang out with a buddy once a week and do this. . On a side note, i cant believe ya never played twin cobra, I puumped alot of quarters into this machine back in the 80s. Man i miss great arcades. Great work!
You have some great titles there for the Genesis. Man you need to get your hands on a copy of Airbuster, and I also recommend Fireshark. Two great shooters for the Sega Genesis console. Great video as always, LOL reminds me when my buddies come over for Retro gaming night. Playing games and a lot of beer drinking, the perfect storm.

Truxton and Fireshark are the best Megadrive shooters. Truxton is better than the arcade game.

I been collecting these recently also and I agree completely about Bio Hazard Battle and Truxton they are both great. And Raiden series is my favorite shoot em up. So many good shooters on the Genesis.
I'm assuming that biohazard battle would be resident evil battle in the US
good vid, but this video is lacking one very important SHMUP on the Genensis/MD, MUSHA.
You have not played a good SHMUP in the Genesis until you play MUSHA. It's pricy, but worth every penny. Even today, it holds its own against the Treasure and Cave greats.
My favorite is Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV)! You should get it's prequel, Thunder Force III! It has the general feel of Lightening Force, but is much easier!

my two best shooters I have ever played was Giga Wing for the arcade and the american version of Bio-Metal for the SNES, would of never thought 2 unlimited music would fit so well with a shmup :P

Raiden trad was a good game but trucks ton is a great game and one of my favourite Genesis games
