Thanks for watching, everyone! Be sure to drop a like if you enjoyed the video, and let me know what your favorite Genesis shooter is. Also, what console should I cover in my next shmup video?
There are enough shooters on the Genesis to make a part 2 or even a not quite the best but good nonetheless. Some of the ones I played: Whip Rush Thunderforce 2 Thunderforce 3 Forgotten Worlds Ranger-X Phelios Sol-Deace And some others that involve lots of shooting but may not fit in the strict definition: Gunstar Heroes Granada Target Earth/Assault Suit Leynos Herzog Zwei
Nice list! The best one that didn't make the cut is Eliminate Down, which was also left in Japan on the Megadrive. And Sega CD also has some excellent shmups.
Great video! I need to try some of these. At the moment,.my favorite shooter on the Genesis is Steel Empire. The steampunk aesthetic reminds me of the Tonight Tonight video by The Smashing Pumpkins amd the soundtrack is kick ass in that game. The developers had a real vision for that game, stuck to it amd bought it to life. Using a zeppelin as your ship is one of the more unique things I've seen in the genre.
Fire Shark was my favorite, but no kidding about resetting if you die later on. The difference between your fully powered shot and your starting shot was absurd. I also loved Gaiares, what awesome music and vibe, but only ever beat it using the invincibility cheat code.
MUSHA has a certain 'feel' and atmosphere to it which is hard to clarify, it's just there, in spades. An amazing game and probably in my top three 16 bit shooters.
@@BigBillKelly-x2z absolutely. Even for a Compile Shmup it is very unique. Even the sequels, Spriggan, the unofficial one, and Robo Aleste, the official one, don’t quite capture that same style. I won’t say it’s perfect but what it does well, it does very well, and it creates a very fun video game experience.
They're just solid playing games, a perfect balance of challenge and fun. Saturn is coming up, I'm thinking of doing the other 16-bit consoles first though.
Raiden Trad is short for "Raiden Tradition", because "densetsu" also means "tradition". I would have preferred "Raiden Legend" or "Legend of Raiden", but I guess that is also a little cliché. Raiden Trad it is!
Good list, would also throw in Slap Fight (my personal favourite Mega Drive shmup!) for a good console port of the arcade version and the special mode! The music in the special mode is fantastic!
some great selections! shout-out to TRUXTON though, I actually have both games on PC thanks to Bitwave's arcade conversions. I do fire them up every so often! amused at the CGR impression, haha. also love me some RAIDEN although the genesis version lacked co-op.
Well, sticking with Genesis games for this video made it easier for me to double check if I have the ROMs of them. Had all of them, including Battle Mania Daiginjou in the Translation folder. Except was only 1 I didn't have, Gleylancer. Well, a quick Google search and about a couple seconds of downloading, and I fixed that problem. 😉 Maybe I might have had it on MAME, but didn't think of checking MAME until I was already on the last game on this video. No big deal though. Anyways, did enjoy this video. Thank you for it.
Thunderforce II and MUSHA Aleste are the only Genesis shooters I completed without dying. (1UP?) My MUSHA was the JP import in ‘90 not sure if it makes a difference?
Strangely I cannot play TF IV, I just cannot see what is going on on the 1st level there is too much contrasting colours. I am partially color blind though. I had the same experience with Armed Police Batrider. I own all these games except Trouble shooter, never heard of it.

Would love to see you compare this list to the best Super Nintendo shmups!

Never expected the CGR collaboration! Truxton!
I didn't think Mark would say yes...
There are enough shooters on the Genesis to make a part 2 or even a not quite the best but good nonetheless.
Some of the ones I played:
Whip Rush
Thunderforce 2
Thunderforce 3
Forgotten Worlds
Ranger-X
Phelios
Sol-Deace
And some others that involve lots of shooting but may not fit in the strict definition:
Gunstar Heroes
Granada
Target Earth/Assault Suit Leynos
Herzog Zwei
Gynoug aka Wings of War is my fave, love that
That's a good one, a tad creepy at times lol
Love seeing gameplay of Musha here Jim & looks bloody awesome here! Nice seeing other SHMUPS here & great video mate! 👍
Nice list! The best one that didn't make the cut is Eliminate Down, which was also left in Japan on the Megadrive. And Sega CD also has some excellent shmups.
Yep, Eliminate Down is another damn good one. Lords of Thunder and Robo Aleste on Sega CD are both awesome.

Musha is the goat. Possibly the best of all time. Ingenious game
MUSHA has a certain 'feel' and atmosphere to it which is hard to clarify, it's just there, in spades.

Thunder Force IV is siiiiick. Possibly the best 16-bit console shooter, period.
It's certainly high in the running
Thunder force III doesn't have slow down. But IV looks so much better. Hard for me to pick.
I would say it is the best 16-bit shooter, by quite a margin.
Gaiares kicks my ass so hard. You are a shooter god my man.
I like Hellfire, Darwin 4081, Gynoug and Sol-Deace for those looking for something different.
fantastic list
much appreciated
I love Thunder Force IV and Phelios
Phelios is excellent, that's another one I considered for this video
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. I mean Musha, Musha, Musha. Musha sound track is so, so, good 😆😆😆
It is indeed, epic Genesis Metal at its finest
I keep popping in Fire Shark and Raiden, I also don't know what it is about it but it's great! Saturn next please Jim.
They're just solid playing games, a perfect balance of challenge and fun. Saturn is coming up, I'm thinking of doing the other 16-bit consoles first though.
Thunder Force III and Lightening Force are better ganes (no arguing that), but boy do I love Thunder Force II...it makes you hurt so good!
TF2 is still an awesome game, no doubt about that.
Mixing the two gameplay styles hurt it IMO.
Please cover the best SHMUPS for PS1
Great list. Even greater Mark impression. 💯👊🏽
Raiden Trad is short for "Raiden Tradition", because "densetsu" also means "tradition". I would have preferred "Raiden Legend" or "Legend of Raiden", but I guess that is also a little cliché. Raiden Trad it is!
Lighten up, Francis
Great list Jim, I would have found some room on the list for Hellfire, love that game
Good list, would also throw in Slap Fight (my personal favourite Mega Drive shmup!) for a good console port of the arcade version and the special mode! The music in the special mode is fantastic!
Great list. Thanks for posting.
Gleylancer and Eliminate Down are the best imo.
One I enjoyed a lot as a kid is insector X

That was spot on.

True, but I almost never play shmups co-op anyway so I don't hold that against it
Great Classic Game Room impression! I'm surprised you didn't mention the metal band, Truxton!
You’re awesome great video. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Ontario Canada.
I love Truxton and Twin Cobra.
Hey man! looking forward to watching this
Gynoug is really good too
It is indeed
I got the new Gleylancer collectors edition a couple months ago. The freaking box is HUGE! Still trying to figure out where to put it

Another good one

Best Mark impression ever!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 You could rename your channel to Classic Game Room and none will be the wiser
Strangely I cannot play TF IV, I just cannot see what is going on on the 1st level there is too much contrasting colours. I am partially color blind though. I had the same experience with Armed Police Batrider. I own all these games except Trouble shooter, never heard of it.
That makes sense, all those scrolling layers and stuff flying around in all directions can be hard on the eyes.
Hey! Where's the Steel empire and Bio-hazard battle?
Hi Jim .I love SHMUPS but I'm not very good playing it , which one is easier and more accessible?
For great Justice!
Truxton is soooo underrated!
Cant fault that list Jim.
Truxton? This is clearly classicgameroom Mark.
Cloning has come along way
Sky Shark could have been Sooo good on Genesis
Eliminate Down. Darius Extra Version.
Both great games
Howdy Jim!! How are you doing today sir?!
Just fine, thanks
