Super underrated Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly as songwriters and singers, too much talent. This song stands the test of time more than 30 years after.
@Sapphy Megatron First time I caught Throwing Muses was a show called "Punk Thing" (I'm quoting the marquee billing) in Athens, GA at the 40 Watt Club in the late 80's. I always thought of them as Punk Rock Girl Power.
@Clarke Martty It's David Narcizzo, who with Kristin has been a constant in the Throwing Muses, and who has a very unique style. His drumming on this album (the Real Ramona) is absolutely brilliant. Stacy Jones though did work with Tanya on some of her post-Belly solo work.
What an amazing talent Tanya is. I'm so glad that I got to see her live a couple of times. I only knew her from Belly at the time because I was a kid - but she is such an important figure in alternative rock history and I don't think that her or Kristen are anywhere near as celebrated as they deserve to be.

And the Throwing Muses, then Breeders (lost my mind my favorite bassist is now with Tanya making music). We come from a very good time, Brockwell. Well indeed. Good old ....
‘The Real Ramona’ is such a great record and personally, it’s one of the defining albums of the early 90’s... but anything Throwing Muses have ever released is just sensational. A ridiculously under appreciated band ... check out their latest album ‘Sun Racket’.. xx
Why did I never know about this song until now? I've currently got this song practically on endless repeat to make up for the 25 years I should've been listening to it!
I'm a HUGE Belly fan, and found Throwing Muses through them. :) I love Tanya's music a lot, and I also enjoy the Breeders' lead singer a great Deal. When you listen to the Breeders, you actually get a two-for-one Deal.
I said elsewhere I am a Brit and only gradually discovered the music of these two half sisters in 1999 through the Sky Motel album when newly released. I can't believe I now get the chance to see Belly live. Donnely shades it with her music ...bloody fantastic sound.
This is one song I wish I could hear for the first time again...I remember how awesome the changes in this song sounded the first time I heard it back in the 90s...now I'm 41 and still I'm impressed when I listen to this ..I swear at least 100 of these views are from me.
Two absoultly amazing musicians. Kristen is much darker in her writing and Tanya is a master of the pop song. Both equally tallented and I will forever be playing their music and getting back to my youth! Oh yes lest I forget David Narcizzo is a master of those drums!
Agree... I find myself watching/listening to about a dozen Muses and Belly videos here on the "Tube" every week. Can't stop commenting every time I do too...
@@miked3168 In your opinion. I spent most of the 80s listening to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who because what was generally on offer was total shite. Not only that, the 90s were a better time. We spent the 80s wondering if we would kiss our arses goodbye in a nuclear flash, Thatcher, Reagan, heroin to blot it all out. The 90s saw an end to the Cold War, the Berlin Wall came down, Mandela was free and there was hope. Musically there was the rave scene, Madchester, Britpop, a thriving Indie scene and Ecstasy ensured the feel good factor. The music, politics and drugs were all better in the 90s, better than the 80s and certainly better than now.
Without the 70's none of this would've been taken seriously, New Wave in the U.S. and punk in the U.K. In my opioid opinion, women in bands-''playing instruments''! You only live once. Don't make a mess of it.
This is such a great song and much different than most of the other Throwing Muses songs. I almost feel like being in Throwing Muses kind of held Tanya back a bit as she often wasn’t the lead. Then she went to the Breeders and once again wasn’t the lead. It was nice to see her as the lead in Belly with Feed the Tree which was a bigger hit than anything she had prior to it.
@@jimmbear3998 Yeah, it makes you wonder if Kristin not allowing more of Tanya's songs on their albums forced Tanya's hand. Same with her tenure in the Breeders. If I have my recollections straight, I think at least a few of the songs on Belly's first album were supposed to be on a follow up Breeders album. While they (Belly), still get together and do a show or tour occasionally, it would have been great to see what they would have done if they hadn't burnt out and called it quits the first time around.
Real Ramona is such a kick-arse album. You're half way through it and they unleash "Hook In Her Head" & "Not Too Soon" & "Honeychain" and you're like, is it legal to experience this?
I can play this song on repeat over and over and over and over, never tired of it, one of the most perfect indie guitar pop songs ever. And well, watching the clip with Tanya just makes it better ;)

i was the same way listening in 1991...but i never saw this video until a few months ago! I did not have MTV in the early 90s (life just after college did not include cable!)
Same thing with me, i liked Tanya from Belly and the Breeders but never got into Throwing Muses so I checked out a few of their videos and discovered this one and was like this is awesome and bought it on ITunes same day and keep listening to it over and over. In find it odd that I never heard this on the radio back then as it is so good and way better than most of the stuff from that time period. Plus with the cool edgy sound and look of the video not sure how this wasn’t a big hit.
I was 26 when this first came out...it still seems just like yesterday when it first graced my hearing and my life...one of my personal, all-time favorite songs...
Any band you catch live that sounds nearly the same as they do on their studio albums is definitely real music. My wife and I went to many shows about 10 yrs back of New Wave/Alternative artists from the '80's and '90's, and almost to the band, they sounded almost the same as their studio sound. No lip syncing or heavily processed music. Just talented musicians and vocalists.
I saw Throwing Muses play at the Town & Country in 1988. I remember before the gig Tanya came and spoke to some people in the waiting crowd. I was struck by this petite beautiful young women.
Exactly I just started exploring their discography and I noticed this song was already in my library from some time before. And I certainly loved it but I suppose I didn't pay that much attention. Now I listen to it often in my rotation and it's just amazing. It's much better now than the first few times I heard it and that I can't say for most songs even if I love them. This is one of those that you just notice more and more incredible sounds and then it becomes so incredible to listen to it's hard to wrap my head around. It almost makes me ecstatic. Songs like this I will be returning to until the day I die.
The drummer is kicking ass i love this song i first heard it in a skate video circa its time dennis durrants video part song whoever did the edit on it nailed it
This song made me determined to learn how to play guitar. I watched the video over and over again, and luckily found the finger placements on the fret boards. The chords E, B, A, and the lead were so fun to play. I could see Kristin didn't move her hand much on the fret board to play the lead. I transcribed it and played it for my guitar teacher. He was so impressed. Now, around 18 years later, I picked up my guitar (Gibson Les Paul style, in sunburst like Tanya's) recently, and instantly started playing this. It is seriously the most fun song to play on the guitar, ever! I had my guitar signed by Tanya, too, when she visited Australia, touring in Belly. Thanks, Tanya for being such an amazing songwriter and an inspiration for so many of us Gen Xers as teenagers! :D
I cannot stop playing this song! First the lyrics are great and her voice is really sweet but gnarly too. It starts off punky , but pop, then goes into this 60's girl group sound. Like Shadow Morten and the Shangrilas, then Christians guitar is soo surf music like the Ventures, then the second verse with bridge is 60's again then it is a Rap at the end. You have punk, pop, girl group 60's, and Rap in one song. It shows how brilliant they were. If you don't understand the lyrics google them they are really cool.
Eric Systrom I actually added the demo version to my playlist a while ago, and love both versions a lot. :) I agree with how cool it is to hear the evolution of the song! :)
Best Indie singer/songwriter ever.... ❤️ If there was ever a track that was pure perfection...this is it. Which is not surprising since she worked on it for over eight years.
Me too😁. TH-cam must have proposed this because I love The Regrettes or because I have been going through some old stuff I used to listen to in the 90s. Pretty sure I m gonna like this band!
I agree it should have been a bigger hit. Throwing Muses doesn’t seem like they were the best at promoting themselves for whatever reason similar to Pixies. Both of those bands could have been bigger if they were better managed IMHO
This is the best indi song of th 90ies, I guess. Tanya Donelly is such a beauty and the song has so much energy. I still love to hear it. When I'm honest, I think I still love her voice, her look and everything. That song is real Indirock at its best.
Growing up I’m New England, I got to see them a lot. So great live! They don’t get the credit the deserve. Their signing to 4AD open the floodgates of New England indie bands like The Pixies and Miracle Legion that led to exposure in England that influenced a lot of bands over there. This video is so 1991. I love it!
+jordan nieto Oh yes. And they were a beautiful Anglo-French partnership, just like Concorde ( or something ). Laetitia continues solo. Her records come out on Drag City
Who said they didn't like female musicians? As a male musician, there is nothing sexier than a woman who can sing or play guitar, or any other instrument. I often sing to women myself, and I lay awake at night, dreaming of being serenaded by a woman who can really sing. Oh what I wouldn't do for a woman who could return the favor, and do it well! Tanya Donnelly is f***ing awesome btw.
Heard this song for first time in 1997. It's one of the greatest songs of all time. Didn't know there was a video till today. I like it better in my mind. No visuals can match its audial dynamics.
me too! I bookmarked it years ago in a browser that is now defunct. and another, and another. the only thing that survives is love of Throwing Muses, and of course, the subsequent band departures into other stuff (breeders was killer at lollapalooza Chicago w beasite boys and the s pumpkins). What a TALENTED FAMILY!
So good to hear this after so long. Alternative pop /rock before it became fashionable. I'm 47 years now but I remember Steve Lamaq on radio 1 playing the Muses, Breeder, the 360's alongside the Pixies and Sonic Youth on his Evening Session programme. Memories. xx
2:16 to 2:30 is still probably my favorite chunk of music ever. Since 1991 on WFNX. And now my 15 year old sings it randomly. She's trying to get her band to play it, but I don't think they're on board yet.
Why the heck am I continously driven and dragged to this type of music as I grow older and older and older....after running over many other "sophisticated" genres, always come back to this beautiful songs of my teenage, I'm not connected to my teenage, it's only a matter of aesthetics I guess, isn't not about memories neither.... THIS'S THE BEST MUSIC ERA OR WHAT ????
Agree 100% that this song is one of a kind. Don't know how it could be any better. I could play it ten times in a row. Don't know details about how the song, or LP, was created. But it seems like this video is kind of the farewell for Throwing Muses. Putting Tanya front and center for 90%, and 2-3 quick clips of Kristin. Both careers full of talent. Gonna play it again. : ) I wish there'd be a copy better than 360p.
That's what alternative music is all about. Not for everyone but for us. This is such a great song. And Tanya Donelly looks and sings like an alternative music goddess. Really awesome. This song is nearly 30 years old and still get's me. Throwing Muses, I love you and especially Tanya. Can't get enough of you. This is not and NEVER Pop. I'm sorry :-)
Brilliant band with the two ladies, from a ground-breaking and simply awesome album. Great band now and then, Kristin and Tanya are both so talented and cool.
Just a kick ass album what a killer combination of Hersh and Tanya’s talent. You can tell they really influenced each other on this album. Such an underrated band . God bless the 90s!
Phuh... what do they know anyway. If they don't see them on the charts where they want they judge the album by it's cover and not the #1 hit song within.
I ❤️ you so much Tanya,,,this was an absolute masterpiece and priceless treasure from your uniquely talented genius mind. "The last time I saw you, you were standing in the dark, and with a freezing face I watched you fall apart" These lines are so touching and sung with such emotion, they bring tears to my eyes.
The song "Not Too Soon" is from the album"The Real Ramona"! Andrzej Lukowski is right! "With The Real Ramona, Throwing Muses wrote an album of great pop songs, but when they did so they no way surrendered their intrinsic otherness - two decades of indie-pop later, it still sounds arresting."
I think when we grow up in a certain era (say, the 90's) and we see all these movies and videos, and get accustomed to this era's visuals and culture, we tend to think that our future will be like that - but when we grow up, that era has long ended and we can't find what we expected when we were growing up. My deep after-midnight-thought. Something in the visuals of this video triggered me.
LOVE this song!! So good!! I defy anyone with a pulse to not be rocking out and dancing by the end of it. Never knew the video existed...Tanya looks great!
Undoubtedly, one of the best alt-pop genre tunes with its infectious melody and Tanya's stirring genius lyrics. The quintessential cat’s meow, out on a limb in enigmatic muse within a dusty gothic cathedral. Scattered about, the band brilliantly bangs out this masterpiece within the masterwork, made even more ethereal by the crepuscular shafts of light (god rays) cast down through stained glass from lofty heights. Spiritual or otherwise, meaning is surreal, cyphered within the lyrics, ambiance, and her playful possession. Much too ambiguous to nail down, but then that allows one’s imagination to run where it wants, and I rather think "She...""...likes it that way”.
Super underrated Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly as songwriters and singers, too much talent. This song stands the test of time more than 30 years after.

Their stuff is legend; have fun
Me too😁. TH-cam must have proposed this because I love The Regrettes or because I have been going through some old stuff I used to listen to in the 90s. Pretty sure I m gonna like this band!
They tons to go! Been listening since the 80's and still discovering. "new" bands
discovery...... obviously an american commenter
I Love music.
The way she plays that guitar in the beginning. I could watch that all day.
watch her live it's even more bewitching...
one of the greatest songs of the 90's.
Great song, sung by a complete doll!
This song should have been number one on the Billboard charts for WEEKS!! Pure pop genius!! I said this back then and I'm saying it today.
I agree it should have been a bigger hit. Throwing Muses doesn’t seem like they were the best at promoting themselves for whatever reason similar to Pixies. Both of those bands could have been bigger if they were better managed IMHO
4AD bands never get there. It's a matter of which bands get promoted on the airwaves.
This is the best indi song of th 90ies, I guess. Tanya Donelly is such a beauty and the song has so much energy. I still love to hear it. When I'm honest, I think I still love her voice, her look and everything. That song is real Indirock at its best.
I just can't stop playing this!!!!!
I love it!
Did You see Tribe. They were the BEST Boson band that didnt make it
@@AdamBlack I didn’t see Tribe, but I used to see Scruffy The Cat with a fake ID. RIP
Charlie Chesterman.
to people who say they don't like female musicians, I turn them onto Throwing Muses and The Breeders, two of the best rock bands ever
+Snapdeus Lush! Babes in Toyland!!
+Snapdeus Stereolab!
Snapdeus VERUCA SALT!
Going down the rabbit hole of listening to grunge and this is the first time I hear this band. How were they not more popular? This is great!
despite the era and the common overgeneralizations based around nirvana, throwing muses while being punk were far from grunge
@@glueball9511 I wasn't calling them grunge. Either way I like TM, alot.
It almost seems they started the 'girl grunge' sound. This was 1991.
I could listen to her sing ALL DAY.
Seeing them live was absolutely amazing. They opened for REM. But after Throwing Muses left the stage, I had seen everything I had come to see.
Throwing Muses > R.E.M.
mad jealous.
i would probably stick around for REM, but it would definitely be negotiable.
@@piotrb8434 Definitely
Ha! Edgy
Heard this song for first time in 1997. It's one of the greatest songs of all time. Didn't know there was a video till today. I like it better in my mind. No visuals can match its audial dynamics.
This song has made me happy every time I hear it for almost 30 years
Memories. xx
You may also remember John Peel before Steve Lamacq who helped so many to get into the limelight.
Great band. Great song. Great location. Great shooting = Great video
2:16 to 2:30 is still probably my favorite chunk of music ever. Since 1991 on WFNX. And now my 15 year old sings it randomly. She's trying to get her band to play it, but I don't think they're on board yet.
has she shown them the video?
God bless WFNX!!!
Incredible tune, incredible band. Made me buy my first electric bass guitar :)
Muses most underrated band ever
Agree 100% that this song is one of a kind. Don't know how it could be any better. I could play it ten times in a row.
Don't know details about how the song, or LP, was created. But it seems like this video is kind of the farewell for Throwing Muses. Putting Tanya front and center for 90%, and 2-3 quick clips of Kristin. Both careers full of talent. Gonna play it again. : ) I wish there'd be a copy better than 360p.
I believe the reason for that was that Kristin was pregnant at the time and didn't want to show it in the video.
@@enanitoblue Perhaps. I had not read that. I did just learn she apparently has synesthesia, which must be particularly unique as a musician.
"The Real Ramona," such a great album. Still works today!
Just one of the greatest songs ever, IMHO
never get tired of this song!
Taco Smell
That's what alternative music is all about. Not for everyone but for us. This is such a great song. And Tanya Donelly looks and sings like an alternative music goddess. Really awesome. This song is nearly 30 years old and still get's me. Throwing Muses, I love you and especially Tanya. Can't get enough of you. This is not and NEVER Pop. I'm sorry :-)
give me this one any hour of the day and you will see the same joy
I can't turn the volume up enough for this song!
Awesome.... Great art is timeless and transcending at the same time.
Real Ramona... best indie album ever
Im 52 still surf and skate!!! And love Sonic Youth and the 90’s such an amazing time!!!
Me too!! But just not surfing but windsurf! 🙂
@@Pierrot35 very cool!!!!!!!!!!
I love this song and video so much I can't put it into words. Tanya Donnely and Kristin Hersch x Indie rock chicks will always rule
They are sisters innit
I loved this song the first time I heard it, guess it was 1991. Quite simply one of the best pop songs ever written.
God bless the 90s!
when she said " i *KNOW* "
I felt that ✊😔
My fav. I used to listen to her four hours and hours while under house arest. LMAO Look it up. Biggupz Throwing Muses for keeping me sane!
How does this not have a million views?
Phuh... what do they know anyway. If they don't see them on the charts where they want they judge the album by it's cover and not the #1 hit song within.
1,600,,000 The power of sharing - this stuff is total 90's
Not been in a network series -
_yet_
I love how dreamy this song sounds, with a beautiful video to match.
Can't believe I've never heard of this band until now. Really catchy stuff.
So MANY 'unknown' bands out there. I'M still discovering LOL
For such a moving, bombastic song. This is a very static video.
That drummer is wow...just....wow. I'll be listening to a lot more Throwing Muses if I find more songs like this, damn!
I always love the shot behind David. I'm not a musician, and it gives me an appreciation for just how hard the drummer has to work.
I ❤️ you so much Tanya,,,this was an absolute masterpiece and priceless treasure from your uniquely talented genius mind.
"The last time I saw you, you were standing in the dark, and with a freezing face I watched you fall apart"
These lines are so touching and sung with such emotion, they bring tears to my eyes.
Oh what a treat!!! Haven't heard this in a long time. Goosebumps.....
Been in love with Tanya since ‘93 ❤
Just a perfect, PERFECT pop song.
Tanya Donelly's finest three mins of alt pop genius. Timeless
What a gem. I hope if I have the pleasure to see Ms Tanya play again (and SOON!) this in her set list. So good.
Amazing vocal performance!
