The algorithm did it again. It brought up one belly video and now Ive had belly/ Tanya Donelly/ throwing muses videos coming up all over the place. What absolute joy to listen to again and see live stuff I've never seen before.
I completely disagree. Tanya used way more metaphors and abstractions in Belly and its unfair to say it said nothing. If you followed her music from Throwing Muses into Breeders it'd make complete sense. LOvesongs was her attempt at being accessible in mainstream rock. It did in fact appeal to people who needed lyrics that were easy/"made sense" but it did not make her a commercial success unfortunately. As a longtime fan this is a pop record and it's very good for what it is.
I loved Belly, but always thought their songs made no sense. If you actually listened to the lyrics, there was just nonsense - it sounded great, but said nothing. When I first heard Lovesongs for Underdogs, it was a revelation. It was like Belly making sense. It remains one of my favorite albums of all time.
Thank God she got rid off that bass player Gail Greenwood. She was the most annoying one and probably the reason King wasn't as good as Star. Long live Tanya and Fred. Btw Tanya's amazing guitar player. Her work in Muses was outstanding. I liked this album although it is hardcore mainstream. Whiskey Tango is more personal and underground but love them both.
What pure undiluted bullshit. Gail Greenwood is an excellent bass player, not one of the greats but plenty good. Annoying? Maybe, depends on personal perspective. She was just being herself and still is. I'll take that over the thousands of cardboard cutouts of what a rock 'n roll chick is "supposed" to act like. I guess some prefer a stoic, never says anything and barely moves on stage chick bass player like D'Arcy Wretzky before smoking crack took over her world. But to blame her for King not being as good as Star? That is as ignorant as it is fucked. Glyn Johns is to blame for any of that album's shortcomings. He changed the formula and they paid the price for his arrogance. Also Tanya opened up to co-writing many of those songs unlike Star where all but one were solely her compositions. King is as good as Star. It's different but that does not make it worse in my book. And my book is Gail is a very lovely person and if you knew her personally, you'd bite your fucking tongue before you would say such shit. Besides, Belly reunited like two years ago, released a new album, and toured. All with Gail. So looks like you didn't get what you wanted after all. Tanya and Gail have been friends for many years. The only reason Gail wasn't playing in Tanya's solo group was because she went back to L7 after Belly broke up. And Tanya's husband Dean happened to be a bass player who had just given up his gig with Juliana Hatfield after she had a breakdown and slowed her roll. Just some food for thought. You Tube comments is the home of the proudly ignorant though so I don't expect
@@imvandenh is this Gail responding? Btw you take these comments to seriously. I listened to Dove and not impressed. Coincidence? Tanya's stuff without Gail better than one with Gail. Just my personal opinion that I don't need to get crucified for.
I absolutely adore Tanya Donelly

@brwddtt And she can sing like an angel.
Narcizo!! I had no idea he was ever in her post-Belly band.
He plays drums on a few track from her debut solo album. David rules

Thoughts on Tanya Donelly: I do not understand what makes her a goddess, exactly. If I could explain it, she wouldn't be one.
Brilliant. Who’s that on keyboard?
Narcizo reppin'
They're step-sisters.
