It doesn't get much in the way of playing games, but I'd rather just play on either keyboard or with motion controllers, rather than controllers without motion control options, just because they feel more comfortable to me, because of the thumbs.

    • @YourCrazyDolphin

      Speaking of accessibility, it also is much easier for those not-so-used to gaming to get into than memorizing a button scheme. Though we hate to admit it gamers can be a bit elitist, and forget that there are skill levels below them, people not "gaming literate".
      It is much easier to translate "swing the remote to swing the sword" as opposed to remembering to "press A to swing the sword". The motion is already associated with the action, unlike the button where you have to learn it.

    • @GroundHOG-2010
      @GroundHOG-2010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Mai Nyigguh Oh wow, never though I would see someone use such a ridiculous argument. Your argument is the equivalent of saying that because there are people who are blind out there, anyone who is partially sighted is incredibly disrespectful to those who are blind, without even understanding the context for the person who is partially sighted. This person who you stated is "incredibly disrespectful" likely has a documentable reason for why their hands shake, and it is probably something again that is documentably going to have an impact on what they can do. Just because it isn't "typing through a straw" levels of disabled does not mean it isn't a disability.
      For another example, lets say you have someone who has problems with their ligaments in their right hand (the hand they write with), leading to pain from time to time as well as frequent sprains if they do too much including writing. This is going to cause problems for them, they won't be able to write a lot because they would likely sprain their wrist, or playing specific sports is not really possible without massive amounts of pain. This is still a limiting factor, it is still a disability despite again not really being visible or as bad as the example you are talking about. This doesn't mean that the person is "just weak, not disabled", because again this is verifiable (in the example I am giving, the person has ligaments 4-5 times the size they should be because of how much scar tissue there is).
      Again, disabilities aren't just this you can't do anything sort of thing. They can be anything that significantly causes issues. They can range from being as visible as someone on crutches, to people who look completely normal. They can effect people in every possible conceivable way, from simple physical tasks, to sensing, to emotion.
      To add onto this, your examples are notable poor when it comes to things not being for everyone. Books are notable for being some of the most widely accessible things out there, from not only different languages, but also audiobooks for those who can't use their eyes at that moment, hell, there is books for those who cannot physically see that also work for those who cannot hear or see. Movies can't really accommodate those who cannot see that easily (outside of radio plays), but for those who cannot hear there is still subtitles as an option. Using either of these to justify such an opinion of such feeling as "we shouldn't care about being inclusive of those who have disablities or difficulties" is rather disgusting, especially when the difference we are talking about at the moment is control mappings.

      In fact, when aiming in the bow minigame with a stick in Wind Wakers GC I was very frustrated because with a mouse, it would far easier, the WiiU version would be far better with giro. Same with all other bow minigames that use the stick to aim. In BotW I use the stick to turn the camera and I use the stick + the giro to aim.
      I think that's why in Metroid Prime 1 & 2 they didn't do a classic FPS, players would have been frustrated.
      Wiimote is also very frustrating in Skyward Sword with the bow minigame, with giro it wouldn't have make me anger everytime the Wii remote uncentered.
      Giro is a good thing but IMO you have to use the stick to change the camera position and set the aimcross as near as your target.

    I won't lie, I moved away from motion controls after the wii, and am pretty ambivalent to them nowadays, but it blew my mind how many people failed to see that the angle at which the controller is held was merely a data point that could be used (either to good or bad effect) as an input to a function.

    • @WhiplashPuppet
      @WhiplashPuppet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Different input types don't always work well with different games. Terraria is a good example. Most everyone I know, myself included, plays with mouse and keyboard. You can play with a controller but, with everything the game asks you to do in real time, it makes using a controller a nightmare by comparison. On the flipside, a more laid back and relaxed game like Minecraft doesn't require a mouse and keyboard to get the most out of it. I guess what I'm saying is that the type of game you're playing counts for a lot too. Though the video might of covered that well enough on it's own.

    Splatoon is what turned me around on motion controls. Oddly enough, I had never really played multiplayer shooters until that game, too. Only single player ones and typically they were survival horror. Resident Evil 4-6, The Evil Within, Vanquish, and now that I’m typing it out, pretty much just Shinji Mikami games. Friends had me pickup online games like Fortnite with them and it was such an uphill struggle, especially when you’re going up against PC players. This just convinced me to look into adapting Gyro to all other shooters I play. Thanks, Nerrel.
    Also, I don’t know if you intended to say it, but someone who plays a lot of stick control shooters needs to try out splatoon and see how easy it is to get wrecked. It’s not an easy game by any means once you get into it. A great easy to pick up, hard to master type of game.

      For me it was BotW. It was my first Switch game and the last time I interacted with motion controls in any fashion was the Wii, which I never owned or cared for. It opened my mind. I immediately bought a pro controller and started using gyro on PC. FPS games I always use m&k, but I get so incredibly taken out of TPS games on m&k due to watching the binary input move my character around so jankily. I'm able to be so much more immersed when the character I'm spending the entire game looking at moves nore naturally. Gyro was these two worlds meeting in a beautiful way I never knew was possible before.
      I use gyro aiming every chance I get now. Not for usual camera movement, but solely for fine tune aiming. It's been a godsend & has me playing more and more games with controller again despite switching away from consoles over a decade ago.

      I just wish there was an option to use gyro without changing the stick controls. I dont see how there would be any issues if you could look up and down with the stick. And why was it necessary to give the camera acceleration only when you enable motion controls.

    • @charsunshermie9376
      @charsunshermie9376 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @macattacker2 private Well for more broad movements, you should use the analog stick. The gyro controls, especially in Splatoon 2, are used for fine tuning your shots and aiming more precisely so that you actually hit your target. Motion controls are not meant to replace the analog stick. They are meant to do what the analog stick can’t do which is of course aiming precisely and moving your cursor by very small amounts without overshooting and aiming way past your target after moving the stick (which is what I used to do every time I tried to aim without motion controls.)

    • @charsunshermie9376
      @charsunshermie9376 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @macattacker2 private Yeah, I agree. The small surface area leaves the stick with not many ways to move. It makes it hard to move it between the maximum camera speed and no movement at all which is what causes the overshooting and makes it hard to adjust quickly in situations where there isn’t much time to think.

    • @chironthecuddley6144
      @chironthecuddley6144 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @macattacker2 private In Splatoon 1/2, the best way to do a 180 is to use the stick and motion together because the game registers both actions and stacks them, so you just overshoot a little bit in the direction you are turning, so when you bring the controller back to center position it is in line to aim again. I know this is kinda late, but I hope it helps!
      Edit: I just remembered something ThatSRB2Dude talked about in an old Splatoon video, you want to treat the controller like the steering wheel on a bus, so hands are angled slightly down from the wrist, elbows are wide but not locked and you turn both hands in the opposite direction. It's really weird in concept, but it helped me a lot when I was learning motion controls.

      Lol at the splatoon 180 degrees problem. How the community goes around solving it:
      -Tilt down the left stick (inkling now faces you)
      -Press Y
      Done. Camera does the 180 on its own and you can continue with the game.
      Let it be noted that I'm not making fun of anyone having trouble with this, but the solution is so organic and widespread that it surprises me sometimes players won't consider it. This is not the first time I read about it.

  • @eymed2023

    Just an aside, but one flaw I noted with the Wii's infrared aiming is that the sensor bar is just two LEDs, while all the processing is done inside the Wii Remote itself. The infrared camera is also located on the controller. This is a problem for two reasons:
    1. It consumes more of the controller's battery.
    2. It adds input latency.
    A better solution would be to do it the other way around: have each controller emit two LEDs and have all the processing be done inside the Wii. The sensor bar would instead be an infrared camera rather than a pair of infrared lights.
    This would reduce input latency, making the cursor more precise and responsive. It would also slightly improve the controller's battery life since two LEDs consume far less energy than the infrared camera and the data processing.
    The only problem is that the system could have problems telling which cursor comes from which controller, but this could be solved using 4 differently colored LEDs below the two main LEDs. The only way it could still have problems is if two cursors crossed over each other, but that's physically impossible.

    • @CptJistuce
      @CptJistuce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I believe the main reason to mount the LEDs in a bar is that triangulation works better if there is more separation between the data points. A single camera isn't a good option if the lights are all crammed into an area the size of a quarter. PS Move got around that by using a large light of a well-defined size. Essentially, the apparent size of the ball provided Z-axis data.
      Interestingly, Oculus Rift tracking actually did what you propose, and used IR diodes in the headset and controllers and two or three IR webcams. Albeit with dozens of IR diodes instead of just two or three. (Other Oculus/Meta devices use a more complex solution that is easier to set up, but less robust.)

    Don't apologize for telling the truth. Motion aiming is better than analog stick aiming in EVERY WAY. When Nintendo ported Majora's Mask to the 3ds, I was able to get the heart piece from the archery guy the very first time I went in there. It took me FOREVER on the N64 because the stick aiming is so jerky. I could not get past that part on the N64 stick aiming until I literally memorized where every single Octorok would appear. Also, there's no way BOTW or TOTK would be as good without gyro aim. I also agree that the Wii's motion controls were better because of the stationary motion bar. In Link's Crossbow Training (hey, it's a fun game, leave me alone!), there is NO WAY stick aiming would be able to get perfect scores like I did with Wii motion aiming.

    Legit, as a dev I want more people like you out there. This is an important topic to me so here's my rant. I've played Splatoon and BotW and I love their implantation to gyro. But I've even seen Nintendo fanboys play Mario has sigh when there's a gyroscope shooting section cause "motion controls bad".
    You legit have faster, accurate precision without autoaim and feels more natural. I've even seen comparisons and almost always gyro is more accurate than mouse (which even surprised me!) And I REALLY wanna make more games with gyro being a main feature. But not every controller even has the ability! When I searched if Xbox had gyro controls (after testing one of my games and wondering why it wasn't working) the ONLY thing I could find was forum posts floooded with only people saying "we don't have or need that shit!!", not a single person was open to the idea. But xbox controllers are also what majority people on the PC uses as their controller, if at all. So unless you're playing on Playstation, Switch or Mobile, you either have to go out of your way to buy a new controller, just to have the ability, or straight up never be able to get the ability!
    I want it to be more mainstream and have everyone watch this video. It just feels more natural, and I want it implemented more. And if you reeeaaally don't like it/cant use it, just turn it off and play it "normally". Is that simple! If anyone actually wants it implemented more, people gotta know, let devs of your favourite games know you want it. Otherwise they wont bother.
    And its nice to see the upcoming Steam Deck use gyroscope as a selling point!
    Thanks for reading! :)

      @Creshex8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MiddleClasshole77 Having used a gyro on PS5, Switch, and now the PC, you don't need some fancy video to know gyro is FAR more precise than the mouse.
      I will give you an easy test at the end of this comment so you can see for yourself.
      There are a couple main reasons the gyro is more precise. For the first point, I will also take time to go into a little of my history with gaming devices. Anyway, point one is the static friction barrier. Mice suffer from a static friction barrier that causes the reticle to lurch when brought to motion from rest. This is hard to notice with larger movements, but I knew about it almost twenty years ago when I was trying to make precise shots. I got so annoyed with the lurching, I switched permanently to trackballs and tablets. I rarely played FPS games for the next couple decades. The mouse's lurching pissed me off. I hated sticks and especially despised aim assist. Trackballs had better precision and even speed sometimes because it mostly did away with the static friction barrier, but you had to sacrifice a lot of fingers that normally would be manning buttons (I used the finger trackballs. I didn't like the thumb balls). Trackballs, even though better, really were not terribly fun and didn't have devoted companies making "gaming" trackballs. The tablet and pen..... OH BOY what a story with that experiment. The tablet and pen had similar button problems with the finger trackballs: you had to sacrifice nearly an entire hand of fingers just to man the pen. However, the tablet and pen was both extremely accurate and VERY VERY fast.... too fast. The screen moved in such an insane blur that I had severe motion sickness nearly every five minutes, and had to take a break. Ironic the best method also was the least fun because I had to deal with headaches to use it....
      ...but the gyro, you get to keep all your fingers for buttons, and there is ZERO static friction because the device rests in your hand and is not rubbed or rolled across any surface. So no more lurching! That alone could arguably make the gyro more precise than mice.
      However, there is another reason: stances. Yes, you can do something with gyro controllers you can't sensibly do with mice: alter the way you brace it in your hands. I refer to this as taking different stances. If you don't need as much precision, you can hold the controller higher in the air, elbows on the table or in your lap, so you can make larger and faster rotations with your hands. Need even more speed? Don't brace with your elbows at all. This will give you maximum range of motion. An advanced tip would be to throw in the additional roll axis to make your horizontal movement even faster. In effect, you will be moving your hands in a spherical motion like you are rubbing a crystal ball, if you choose to throw all three axes into the mix. However, if you need near pixel level precision, you can then, in an instant, brace your wrists onto a table or press your controller and hands into your lap. This has the effect of greatly slowing down the reticle and eliminating the effects of small twitches and jolts that can throw off your aim from a more relaxed position. It's kinda like a sniper going prone and using a bipod instead of standing with his rifle to make a shot.
      So here is your test. Take your mouse, set at the same speed you game at, and start making circles with it, and watch the screen. Keep making the circles smaller and smaller until you can't make them any smaller with any precision. Now do the same exercise with a gyro controller. You will find, thanks to ways to put a severe brace on the controller, you can make circles so small they are practically a few pixels tall. This is what makes gyro players extremely dangerous in certain circumstances, compared to mice users. A gyro player can hit head shots even when the head is barely the size of a pinhead. And what is especially amazing is, with a little practice, it's not even that hard to do. I'm playing Rage 2 on the PC with a Dual Sense on Nightmare difficulty. I realized one reason the game seemed so easy, even at this higher difficulty level, was my ability to make headshots at engagement ranges unrealistic for even a mouse and especially a controller (ranges so far, enemies cannot properly hit you with weapons identical to your own).
      Before I actually discovered all this about gyro, I did make one commitment: I would stick with gyro even if mice were better. Why? Because I actually have a lot more FUN with the gyro! I could have played with mice or trackballs for the last few decades if I wanted to, but rarely did because I really had so little fun with those devices. Gyro seems to magically triple the fun of FPS games, and I always play with no aim assist. I went from rarely playing FPS games to playing them all the time. After long enough, I began to feel like my mind was wired into the controller. It seems like I'm aiming with my thoughts alone. I am not even the only person who has described it in this way.

He ended up having to return the used copy because it was scratched and crashed constantly, and now he’s playing it on the Wii and having a perfectly fine time sitting down while playing.

    I grew up on analog aiming in shooters since I was an Xbox 360 kid. Although when I was 14 I started playing shooters on PC a lot more and shifted towards KB&M. It wouldn't be until a few years later when I tried playing a shooter on a controller again.
    It genuinely made me want to throw the fuck up all over the floor. How in the world was I able to consider this shit GOOD back then? It feels so bad now. It's why I think the Wii port of RE4 is the best way to play that game. The pointer aiming is simply unmatched. While I still vastly prefer KB&M to Gyro, that's simply due to muscle memory and I'm completely used to the potential downsides that come with it. Gyro by default still feels better than aiming with a stick because it allows for more natural movement and it's easier for me to land shots (the few that DO land, anyway. Again, still a KB&M jockey). It's hilarious how so many people instantly get violent towards the idea of slightly tilting your hands to move a gun, as if they're having Vietnam flashbacks to Kinect Star Wars.

      Now being 2 years since i commented this, another cool gyro controller setup i've found is the flick stick config, which usually come with a gyro release button, so it allows you to use gyro more like a mouse.

    I never really understood these comments that waved away motion controls. Like I understand the technology wasn't where it needed to be and Nintendo sometimes had unecessary motion controls in their games (coughstarfoxcough). I don't think gamers gave motion controls at the time the chance to grow and improve. VR is showing just how much motion controls have improved.
    I notice there is a heavy pushback for anything that breaks the mold in gaming and realize gaming hasn't changed much since the PS3/XBOX 360 days.
    Any new idea is waved away as a gimmick, without giving it a chance to evolve. We went from the Atari joystick to the NES gamepad to the shoulder buttons to two more additional buttons, to one analog to two.
    I'm glad games like Splatoon 2 and Zelda BotW got people to warm up to gyro aiming and glad for VR to show that motion controls can improve. It is nice to have options. I'm really glad you mentioned people with disabilities. That is often really overlooked. It is so cool that there is more accomodations for disabled gamers.

    On pc, this last few weeks I tried to "git gud" with analog sticks. Experimented with response curves, bought some Kontrol Freeks to help out, then practiced for hours on Aim Lab.
    Using the Nacon Revolution 3 btw.
    Tried some games while I was at it. Killing Floor 2; I actually turned off aim assist options for that and changed some configs here and there. It worked perfectly fine actually. Still had trouble doing those flicks tho.
    Apex Legends: gunplay was fine with that. Aim Assist was modest and didn't really feel at a disadvantage. No option to turn off aim assist which was a bit funny.
    Risk Of Rain 2: wanted an option to turn off aim assist becuz of the targeting friction thing going on. *it didn't have it*
    Destiny 2: Aim assist.
    Rainbow Six Siege: my controller's grip buttons helped here a lot. Gunplay was still troublesome as the game required me a lot of flicks and a *lot* of recoil control. Aim assist was unnoticeable (prolly cuz I always ADS). Ended up winning only mechanically.
    A lot of my time with the Analog sticks, on Aim Lab, I spent over aiming, dragging too slow, too fast, and overshooting.
    Nacon Rev 3 isn't supported by the Steam Input so today I switched back to the Dualshock 4 to try that gyro again...
    ...
    Every single problem I had with the Analog sticks was suddenly eliminated...
    and all the weeks worth of effort I've been putting into them was completely thrown out the window...
    In just mere minutes...
    With zero aim assist...
    Still configuring the gyro for the games but now I'm wondering, why do *I* have to do this? This "gyro" had been built into the Dualshock for *years*
    Why didn't anyone use this? Why do I have to go such lengths just so I can use it? Were developers back then weren't creative enough to give more use to them? Or maybe they weren't smart enough to figure out how to implement such thing?
    Were the people scarred by the Wii consoles *that* badly to refuse it? To the point that it isn't even an *option* for those that want it?
    Sorry, this got real long. I'm just really bummed out with all this. Imma just stop it here.

    I saw this video a while back and decided to watch it again today. The responses you received reminded me of a comment I made on another video about the PS5 controller. I said I thought it was strange that the DualSense has no paddle buttons despite the fact that Sony made a paddle accessory for the DS4.
    To my dismay, most of the responses I got included:
    -Being glad that Sony didn't include such a "dumb gimmick".
    -Thinking adding it would drive up the cost of the controller to over $100 and being glad that Sony "chose to keep the controller affordable".
    -Not seeing a point in it and being okay with the lack of it.
    I don't understand what it is with the majority of Xbox and PlayStation gamers and their refusal to accept innovation. The fact that my simple remark about the lack of extra buttons on a controller was able to rile up a bunch of angry console gamers shows that they hate change, no matter how small of a change it is. They'll pull any excuse out of their asses to support their baseless claims. If people keep behaving like this, controller based inputs will continue to stagnate. People need to accept innovation, and if they really don't want to use it, they can just not use it.
    As you said in this video, someone's refusal to accept and use innovation should have no bearing on someone else's ability to embrace and enjoy it. There would be absolutely no disadvantage to adding paddles to the DualSense, yet here we are, with a group angry idiots refusing to accept change even if it's a positive change with no bearing on their ability to play games the way they want to.

      the thing that's really sad about this is that paddles are a dope feature.. if it were a standard it would make having pc games that require lots of different inputs significantly more viable on console by virtue of using paddles as extra buttons, input modifiers, etc.. They also make using a controller for games that require aiming and pressing buttons just feel better since you can remap the face buttons. I would even *prefer* if I could have the face buttons set to 4 paddles, and then remap the face buttons to input modifiers in some cases. The other day I was even thinking about picking up an xbox elite 2 for some pc games that I feel could benefit from it.. but I don't exactly have the gamer cash to be throwing around at controllers all the time....

      @@TerryVideoZone Exactly. Paddles make such a big difference. They've saved me on multiple occasions when mapping configs for PC games. It's one of many reasons I love the Steam Controller so much. It's so sad that the official standard controllers for all 3 consoles don't have them. They offer a serious advantage that's being overlooked, just like gyro aim.

      If "innovation" just means an experiment that nobody asked for, then its a gimmick.
      Tune in next week where we remove basic features of the controller like buttons in favor of a random number generator that choses your inputs for you and call it 'innovation'.
      Have you ever considered the possibility that controllers stopped changing because there's nothing to be improved?

      @@Sam-vf5uc I would disagree with this sentiment and consent with this video on the point that most of the attempts at genuine progress with controllers have been stonewalled by gamers that got scared by the whole waggle and gesture control debacle and are now chronically afraid of good additions. No sane gamer wants to *remove* features for a general input device Mr. or Ms. Devil's advocate. To further drive the point I was trying to make in my initial reply to this comment, while contextual inputs assist with things in many ways when developing most games these days, a lot often feel like they're being held back by the limited input options of the standard controller in comparison to say, the openness when it comes to control schemes in PC gaming. Don't get me wrong, the design that's been settled on is good, but the addition of macroable comfort and disability-friendly features like paddles and hair triggers aren't just gimmicks, they further expand the potential of what we think the standard controller is capable of. For example, I absolutely can't stand playing fighting games with a modern gamepad; most layouts don't feel good in six-button games, take into account games like SF4 or third strike where you usually have the option to macro some of the button combos like 3 punches, 3 kicks, etc. and then it's like an existential *nightmare* for me. but if I had the option to switch my triggers over to being buttons, or bind some of those to some paddles it would vastly improve my comfort in this regard. I ended up dropping like $200 on an arcade stick just because of this one problem I have with this one relatively niche genre of games! Also gyro should just be a standard imo, at least an optional feature in all standard gamepads; it improves the accuracy of aiming with a controller by a significant magnitude after the acclimation period and there's really no harm in having it as an option if it doesn't come at too much additional cost.
      tl;dr, lmao nobody's saying we need to completely re-conceptualize the controller for proper innovation. Good, real innovation is already happening if you've got the scratch to drop on most premium price-point controllers and I think most people can probably look forward to when the bleeding edge features and options start making their way down into the more affordable controllers hopefully in the near future.

      @@TerryVideoZone Let me just say that you're an absolute legend and perfectly described the way I feel towards the stagnation in controller design. It's clear that Sam is a perfect example of the Xbox/PS tryhards who throw tantrums over innovative additions to controllers. I'd like to add that these kinds of people seem to think that features like gyro or paddles are forced changes to the way they're supposed to play games when that simply isn't the case. These are additions. They add functionality to the controller, not change it. Features that supplement the way you already play games and make the controller more functional and capable at competing on a high level. That's true innovation, and it needs to be recognised and embraced by the masses.

      tbh it's more like "why do I have to payna menu with chicken nugget if i don't like it"
      the DS4 is full of little gimmick (the pad, the gyro being supported by 0 games, the micro...), this gimmick have a cost and the controller would be half the price without all this shit.
      I love gyro on switch because most games i play on it are first party games, so there's a good support for it.
      The only games with gyro on PS4 is gravity rush, a niche game.
      of course the videogame industry need to try new stuff, but I can understand too why people don't want to pay $20 more for a technology not used for a whole 7 years.

      Even then, in almost all cases, those waggle controls could still just be an option. Which would hurt no one and would just allow anyone to play how they want.
