Great video, perfect pizza, awesome scaler for its time! Being a true Italian and a Genius II owner, this video makes me proud! 😊 As for scaling capabilities the Genius II was designed as an arcade device: I think its purpose is either to upscale 15khz to 31khz (old board to VGA only CRT like Naomi or flatscreens like Vewlix) and downscale Naomi (very common in Italian arcades) games to old 15khz setups.
Thanks Pedro! I couldn’t find anywhere on MIMO’s site or in the manual for It’s specific intended use, and I was thinking along the same lines being similar to the Ultracade uVC by including 24KHz. Not bad for their time and an interesting piece of downscaling history
@@pedroTFP oh you’ve had contact with them? I emailed them nearly a year ago asking about the Genius 2 but didn’t receive a response. I understand though as it’s a legacy unit that’s long been out of stock. I’m sure people would be elated if MIMO jumped back into making an updated product for downscaling that improves on the Genius II. Currently the only *sort of* purpose built modern downscalers are the OSSC Pro and if Pixel FX follow through with their crosspoint addon and eventual FW update
@@MarcoRetro316 I bought the last Genius II in stock from them in 2020. I asked them if they’d do a MiMo Genius III; they said they could if the could secure adequate financing (30k euro for start, IIRC)
I bought that thing when it was still being made. I was so excited to get it and extremely disappointed with all the shimmer. Turned me off from downscalers until I found your downscaling content, a decade or so later. Imagine doing something so bad you scare someone off for a decade. Your pizza game is on point, but you already knew that. Grazie per il video!
Thanks Parski! You’re a true OG if you were using the Genius II back in the day. My first downscaling experience was the Extron Interface Trick and I just happened to have one of the few CRT’s that it actually displays in 240p. I was oblivious that it was a lemon though. I couldn’t get the Genius 2 to perfectly scale horizontally even for a 640x480 input and the shimmer is a real annoyance in 2D games and then decimation strips out too much detail so it’s not too ideal as a downscaler
@@MarcoRetro316 I have the same experience. Got PTSD from your Sonic footage as I got flashbacks from staring at the horizontal scrolling test in 240p Test Suite desperately trying to figure out what in my chain was causing the tears streaming down my face. Have a nice week!
@@Reyas she’s a beauty. I still have some of the other monitors and TV’s I’ve featured throughout; BVM 20F1, 14L5, widescreen Grundig, couple of smaller sets and VCR combos
Thanks! I haven’t tried any Kramer products. None that I know of can downscale, but it might be possible if some that can output a custom resolution. It’s been an expensive series to make so as much as I’d love to plough through as many scalers as possible to see which can also output 240p, I need to focus on trusted and tested methods
Hello Marco, can you do me a huge favor? Could you test the output of 240p via a PC with crt Emo driver in combination with a VGA RGB scart cable? That would be so great of you. Love your videos. Very high praise 😊
@@MagisterHamid I’m down to the Morph 4K which is waiting on hardware and software for analog 240p output, and maybe an episode dedicated to using a PC to output 240p
@mikeg2491 yes I’ve reviewed the Extron Emotia th-cam.com/video/TjkG0D8V8O0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared; another scaler that was good for its time but didn’t age so well. I found the colour compression and banding to be the biggest issue, though it was probably adequate for the time to handle lower colour bit depth computers
@@MarcoRetro316 Please do a tutorial video on how to get 240p out of a pc. Their are old graphics cards you need to buy and special drivers to install. It would make for a great video and I could follow the tutorial and get my system up and running HAHA :)

Yes, 24khz too! If you want you can email Mimo, the owner and creator of the Genius is a kind guy, maybe you can interview him! ☺️
