  • Two titans of poker face off in this hand from a high stakes poker tournament at the Lodge Poker Club. Alex Foxen takes on part owner of the Lodge Card Club - Doug Polk! If there is someone you really don't want to battle heads-up in a pot, it's probably a heads-up specialist such as Doug Polk. Watch this poker hand to find out why!
    Alex Foxen is a 32 year old American professional poker player and is a regular at the highest stakes tournaments in the world. He has over $30,000,000 in live tournament earnings putting him in the top 20 on the all time money list. He has 1 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. Doug 'WCGRider' Polk is a part owner of The Lodge Card Room along with Brad Owen and Andrew Neeme. Doug has almost $10,500,000 in live tournament earnings and 3 WSOP bracelets, which includes a win in the $100k Super High Roller for $3,686,865 in 2017.
    Alex Foxen ended up winning this poker tournament for $235,000. Doug Polk came 3rd for $100,000. This was the highest buy-in event from The Lodge Championship Series. The series ran from April 26 - May 16 2023 and featured 19 events with buy-ins from $200 - $25,000.
    🔥 This intense poker action took place at The Lodge Poker Club during a high-stakes No Limit Hold'em event with a jaw-dropping buy-in of $25,000!
    🔍 Pre-flop:
    Action is folded to Alex Foxen in the small blind who makes the call with 75o. Polk looks down at Q2o and opts to check as both players head to the flop.
    🎴 Flop: Js 6d 4h
    Foxen flops an open ended straight draw and decides to check. Polk who has not improved on this flop decides to check behind.
    🔄 Turn: 6s
    The turn pairs the board and now Foxen decides to start firing as he choose a small 33% pot size bet. Polk who is known for his fearless heads-up play makes the call with just queen high.
    🔥 River: 9h,
    Foxen mixes his straight draw and still has no pair by the river but this doesn't slow him down. He correctly identifies that his seven high is not going to win at the showdown. He decides to put Polk to a huge test as he uses a 150% pot size bet of 60,000 into 40,000. Over to Doug Polk, surely he can't find a call with just queen high? Watch this poker video to find out!

      I could reasonably find this call in a cash game scenario, with ICM implications this spot becomes a lot tougher. I play the same way as Foxen but I bet smaller on river, half pot most likely.

    It was the huge bet on the river that gave it away. Polarized his range, and there are way more bluffs than monsters. Medium bet probably does the trick.

    It is really tough to call when everything on the board beats you, but that's why Doug is so good heads up. If your opponent is balanced, its tough.

    If Foxen is known to bluff a lot, then a hero call makes sense given the bet size. The whole way both Polk and Foxen played this hand is little too sticky for me. Aggression isn't a magic wand and maybe Polk picked up on this aggrocadabra tendency in Foxen's game play.

    Kind of doubt there would be that much if any shoving going on with that SPR versus small bet. Especially from Polk versus chip leader. E.g. does strong hands really want to create max fe and what kind of bluffs outside of oesd can Polk have if he shoves? It's still over 2x pot if he shoves over half pot cbet.

    • @jarppe123
      @jarppe123 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also can see issue in flop check, bet, bet line that you do cap your range somewhat by not betting flop. But yeah not saying he would not have J, 6 or overpair good chunk of time as well.

  • @jackolini
    @jackolini 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The 9 doesn't change anything on the river (maybe Foxen has the 9s with a spade flush draw, but very few combos of that specifically). If you bet big, you are saying you have like 6x or nothing. I think if you bet small, you can get Polk to fold out some of his weaker holdings that still beat you. He might call you with ace high if you bet $40K+.
    I guess you can always give up too if you're Foxen, although this is a good hand to bluff with.

    Hmm.
    I think bluffing is mandatory here. On a bluff, I would normally want to go big. However; that is polarizing , so what thick value is Foxen saying he has in this spot? He failed to bet J64 rainbow, he tiny bet the 6 turn, so if he overpots the river, I guess he is saying he has 96? So he made a tiny turn bet with trips? Doesn’t make that much sense. What thick value makes any sense here? So no. I think you have to go half pot advertising a random 9 or maybe even a 4. I think this has to fold out anything below King-high…
    So im gonna go 20k on the river.

    I un block spades. With Doug only calling turn bet, I could think he’s on spades since he didn’t bet flop. No way he has a jack or a 6, at best he’s got an under pair or a 4. I’m shoving for 3.5x and make sure he realizes all his fold equity.

    If foxen had a hand like KX or Ax pre flop he would or raised it so going into the flop with Qx is not that bad . So when Foxen over bets the river he is representing a 6 on this board. Also if foxen had a 9x hand he wouldn’t bet this big . So it’s either a 6 or 10 high in this case it was 7 high .

  • @OscarZoroaster
    @OscarZoroaster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    i dont think its that crazy of a call really. any Kx Ax hand would raise preflop HU sb v bb, and foxen payed it exactly like a busted draw as you explain how you would play it, polk was easily able to sniff this out. text book call imo.

    My biggest concern about folding here is if Alex is turning something like Ks5s into a bluff that actually beats me. I suppose there's so few combos of AsXs and KsXs (not to mention he'll raise lot of AsXs preflop) compared to stuff like 57, 78, 35 etc that it's a decent call.
    Basically 0 chance I'm calling this in a tournament for half my remaining stack though, I'm no where near ballsy enough for that 😂

    why would Doug showe on turn on a board like this... ??? Basically Alex can have anything (trapping AA or some garbage) so shoving would be kind of a risky play here. Chances to hit two pair on flop is 2% but also with two pair why you want scare away opponent who just bets with a 45 or bluffs... you want max value, so I really don't get this part of your analizis. I think saying out loud confidently one specific understanding of a situation is the opposite of being smart... it makes you look smart among average people, but not among really smart people. Try to pick more angle and allow to yourself the sentences like "It can be this, that", "I don't know why he checked, could be this or that the reason, etc".
    In poker with all of your actions you keep/include possible stories and also you remove/make less likely other stories. There is no completely good or bad decision cause it also matters how a piece of act completes the big picture, develops other stories, etc and how at the end you use these stories to take advantage. Poker is a marathon, not a sprint.
    I can tell you here both play is valid. You can bet or raise. The only important here at this flop situation is to randomize your game, don't be predictible. But betting makes more sense as you have the strength advantage, Alex can have more likely strong hands also in his range, meanwhile Doug can't have any premium hands, also alex blocks 65,67,45, etc.. so Doug probalby has nothing here. It is a bet on this flop 80% of time. Also its funny 1 minute later you just destroy your own theory by criticising Alex how he should have bet with having a J or 6 in his hand on the flop and now on turn he starts betting and of course nobody believes him ... yes this is what i am talking about Alex with cheking killd many of his stories. On the river the only make sense thing is to make an overbet as the last story Alex can tell is he trapped with a JJ and he hopes Doug has a 6... but to be honest it is kind of a very unlikely story to tell this way as you miss so many value called by weaker hands, so i think a tiny bet make more sense as if Doug has a 6 he would raise.

      It's not a cash game 😂, and Doug Polk have a reputation on HU specialist

      Good question. My gut tells me Polk is honest. My gut isn't always right. I wouldn't have called the turn or river with Q2. The poker world went crazy when that lady called Garrett with Jack high. In Polk's situation people make the argument that he's a poker genius.
      In the lady's case people were saying she couldn't make the call without cheating. It's hard to know when players make a crazy hero call that turn out to be right if they are poker geniuses or lucky.

      There’s an extreme difference between a full ring cash game, and a heads up tournament short stacked play

      Like I said at some point you realize you're being bluffed and you beat 90 percent of their bluff range.

    It’s funny how similar this was to the J4 off hand that Robi called Garrett with. Nobody is accusing Doug of cheating. It’s kinda funny

    • @ivanbilic1902

      Nothing fishy at all.. Everything is explained in the video, and there is only a few value hands with this bet, and so much blufs.. call is only hard because it is tournament and there are ICM implications, heads up no limit cash game, its not that hard of a call. Because you cant wrap your head about it, that does not mean something fishy is going on
