      The fit-and-finish is not what I would expect for a $175 limited edition knife, especially from a respected manufacturer like Buck. But generally I do like the knife and I think I will stick with it.

    Great video going over all aspects of the blade. I believe they are a bit overpriced but if it's one you definitely want for your collection, why not!! I'd love it without the billboarding and at $125 price tag. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @ThriftyKaniffy

      $140 or under would have been better. I feel like I'm paying for the development of the new blade shape & not just the steel. Thanks BigJ!

    I was never a fan of Buck knives, even less so these days. It is nice to see them jumping to MagnaCut though. That's a huge improvement over the low to mid grade steels they usually use. People seem shocked by the $175 price tag, but when you're looking at a USA made knife with a premium steel. That's pretty much entry level pricing.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never been troubled by the steel Buck uses. I'm not as picky about blade steels as others are. Learn to sharpen/Teach a man to fish...Same sort of concept.

    Surprisingly, I actually like the 420-HC stainless Buck uses in most of its everyday models. Easily sharpened with a very conventional Arkansas stone, durable enough to easily withstand EDC, what's not to like? Modern super-steels come with the need to purchase things like diamond abrasives to get maximum performance and it's nice to have something in my pocket that just ... works.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing wrong with that. I've got plenty of 110s and others with 420. Thanks, MrMz

    I am aware the knife is not 'perfect', but I am still very sad that I missed it. I have a lot of admiration and respect for Larrin's work and the way he shares his knowledge with the knife community. Plus this knife is legal to carry in Germany. Second had prices appear to be about 2x the new price. I guess sometimes we just don't get what we want. Hope guys who got one enjoy and use it.

    Nice review. I really like it but not for the price. I like my 501 so I’ll stick with this standard one lol. The back spring on my standard 501 is the same way as your Larin. Sits below the bolster when the blade is closed, but sits flush when the blade is open. I think Buck could’ve done a better job of producing the Larin, but it definitely does look good.

    Hey John, a great review and background information.
    Looks like you definitely got a better example than Jersey.
    The price is definitely on the high side but I guess everyone’s free to spend their money how they want 😀, certainly wouldn’t knock anyone for wanting one. I’ve got the regular Squire and it’s a great little knife.
    Shame about the lack of attention to detail with the etching but guess that’s no big deal.

    What a crummy logo...horn rimmed glasses, looks like Sam the cooking guy's logo IMHO.

      @ThriftyKaniffy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, he's a nerd so the glasses work for a logo, but I don't need it on the knife. Thanks, Jack.

    PS…. Magnacut is readily available. Tons of models out there running Magnacut. This is absolutely overpriced Magnacut. No matter how you justify it. It’s a tiny, skinny blade and who knows what their HRC and heat treat is. I was excited about this knife and disappointed just as quickly.

    What's happened to Buck? This is definitely not worth $175. It would be IF: blade were centered, grinds were perfect, grinds didn't hit the choil, back spring was flush with the frame, garish branding. This is an unacceptable price for such quality.
    If I received that, I'd return it immediately.

      They can do better, for sure. I still enjoy it.

    Thrifty, you don’t sound very enthusiastic about this knife. I think you have landed a real keeper however and should hang on to it. I think that the biggest updriver on the cost is the ebony wood handles. Ebony has become a sacred and protected wood. Bob Taylor of Taylor guitars as you mentioned was able to secure a quantity of ebony wood from Africa if my memory serves me right. Ebony is the premier wood used for the fingerboards of very high end guitars. I suspect that Taylor Guitars has sold scraps of ebony left over from guitar fingerboard fittings but small enough for knife handles. Just a guess, I have no inside dope. Just the fact that your knife has ebony handles/scales is going to rocket up the value.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Buck procures left over wood scrap from Taylors by exclusive agreement. I like the knife very much and I'll be keeping it, don't get me wrong. However, I'm less enthusiastic about what I had to pay for it. Thanks, RB.

    175 Bucks! Sorry, just my opinion on it, Not worth 75 Bucks, don't care if its Magnacut or not. Fit and Finish is far more important than what Steel the Blade is made of.
